- The Runaways were an all-female teenage American rock band that recorded and performed in the second half of the 1970s. The band released four studio albums and one live set during its run. Among their best-known songs are "Cherry Bomb", "Hollywood", "Queens of Noise" and a cover version of the Velvet Underground’s "Rock & Roll". Never a major success in the United States, the Runaways became a sensation overseas, especially in Japan, thanks to the hit single "Cherry Bomb".
The Runaways were formed in late 1975 by drummer Sandy West and guitarist Joan Jett after they had both introduced themselves to producer Kim Fowley. Fowley then helped the girls find other members.
Starting as a power trio with singer/bassist Micki Steele, they soon added lead guitarist Lita Ford, who had originally auditioned for the bass spot; Jett switched to rhythm guitar. Steele was fired from the group, replaced by local bassist Peggy Foster, who left after just one month. Lead singer Cherie Currie was found and recruited in a local teen nightclub called the Sugar Shack, followed by Jackie Fox (who had originally auditioned for the lead guitar spot) on bass.
This Legendary Toppop performance was first broadcast on 26 November 1977.

So is Joan. Worked one of her concerts backstage and she brought us out pizzas and Cokes and spent about a half hour chatting with us. Couldn't believe how cool and unpretentious she was.
Joan's vocals always had both shine and grit through the tune, and always attitude.

All girl groups are prone to this. Camille Paglia commented about this very real and natural dynamic in female rock groups. They need a strategy for conflict resolution. Men fight and get over it and move forward. When women fight they won't stop even when the problem has been resolved. Women need to sublimate their ego with a "take one for the team" attitude which frankly, is not natural in women.

I really wish this band would have lasted longer.
Joan and Lita were musically going in two different directions, with Joan going in the direction of Punk and Lita in the direction of Heavy Metal, and Cherie Currie had already quit the band by this point so the breakup was pretty much inevitable.

Aw, she was basic at best, but you couldn't replace her persona in the group, kinda like Ringo. My crush as a teen was her, not JJ although I saw JJ a bunch at clubs around NJ/NY back in the day. May Sandy rest in peace.

Appreciated by me. They were the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place. Tried to learn everything Lita did, she was my hero. I even managed later in my life to have a melody maker and a Hamer on the wall in the bedroom. Don´t think my girlfriend understood though...

I saw them at The Shrine in LA, CA about 1976-77 as opening act for The Tubes. Their first big break. Good show. Cherry Bomb sticks in my mind.

I think they were perceived a bit differently in the UK, compared to the USA. One of the London gigs I saw was soon after 'Waitin' was released, and it was predominantly a punk audience, although not entirely.

I don't know why people say underrated when it comes to the Runaway's, they are from my era,I have seen them live and they were very much appreciated, they were loaded with talent and "Cherry Bomb" got tons of airplay. Everyone who went solo from that band was successful.

I remember seeing their album in the store, but had no idea who they were. Didn't even know Joan Jett was a former member when she rose to success in her solo career. Didn't know about Lita until she did the song with Ozzie. Guess I was listening to different rock at the time.

I went to a Wishbone Ash concert (Leeds, UK) when I was about 16, must have been 1975, and The Runaways turned out to be the opening act. Wasn't expecting it..wasn't disappointed!

@@waynebenedict5785 In the mid 1980's after Jett's popularity waned and before Ford had her few hit songs it may have been possible. But it would not have happened due to Jett's manager Kenny Laguna had her tightly under his control.

When they came out even though I was a kid , the all female thing didn't get my attention, I was already used to lot of all female groups and lead singers like Fanny and Suzi Quatro , etc. It was the sound and the songs . I heard them long before I saw the band, and then of course I had a crush on them all but thats a different story .

They were extremely talented and they had a musical maturity that would have put more seasoned bands to shame...
Joan Jett's vocals are right on point, as is her guitar playing ( interesting seeing her play a strat ) and of course Lita Ford and the rest of the band does a fabulous job...

Very impressive band...
You can really hear the unique Burns Flyte tone cutting through the mix. They are great guitars and when used properly can really elevate the sound of a rock song.

@@fredfox3851 no Mickey Steel only started with them , but before they recorded their first album , Mickey quit the band, This was 1976 by 1978 Vicky Blue was on bass until 1979! This video and album were from 1978! Michael Steel is much shorter than Vicky, and not blonde.

Наши совковые да и современные так называемые рок исполнители в подмётки не годятся этим девкам, которым на тот момент было по 18-20 лет.Драйв, вокал, гитарные и ударные партии бесподобные! К сожелению сейчас так играть и петь не умеют. Разучились наверно.
