I'm literally in the process of starting a consultancy in the SQL Server Performance Optimisation horizontal so this couldn't have been more helpful or relevant!
Upd. You're actually answering this question 😅 Hey, Jonathan. It's interesting that you came to consulting from reading Alan Weiss, and his point on niching is quite opposite from yours. What do you think about his critique of niching down, and suggestion to go wide?
It does feel difficult to narrow in on something. Each time I learn something new, I want to focus on that, but then my existing portfolio makes no sense. How do you balance constant learning with specialization?
Does the "mission statement " sound good for a consultant focusing on computationally intensive applications: "Software craftsmanship in high performance code"

Lindy Design Lab in tech lots of things build on top of each other. It’s cumulative. Choosing a vertical won’t lock you in. It’s your discriminator.
Great
