    Ever since the Canon EOS R came out, the 4K mode's crop factor was a real issue for a lot of people. Not because the image quality was bad... or not even because it had a crop...it was the fact that the crop was an awkward 1.8x crop making is WORSE than an APS-C camera! Well...now...out of nowhere, Metabones makes the new Canon EF to RF speed booster ULTRA 0.71x (EOS R)! Does this new mount change everything for the EOS R in 4k? Will this come in handy for the new RED Komodo camera? This also works great on the Canon EOS RP but you don't have the autofocus in 4K using dual pixel.
    In this video, we test the resolution in 4k vs. 1080p. Full frame and crop mode. Autofocus tests using eye autofocus modes. ISO and low light tests, and more!

I own 3 ILC cameras that can shoot 4K including the 5D4 and the GH5. They both shoot amazing 1080p. Today I saw amazing video quality and I looked to see what she was using....and it was 720p 60. Hey Dave,
    Thanks for making this video. Couple questions for you. When using EF-S lenses, were your tests in 4K or 1080p? And Canon EF-S have rubber on the rear lens mount. Did this interfere when attaching to the Metabones? I've seen videos of people taking off the rubber to use on Sony cameras and it made me not want to try that. Keep up the great content Bro. It's always interesting watching your videos and learning something new. Cheers!

    • @SpencerLupul

      Paul, EF-S lenses would not work with this hack. You can use EF-S lenses with the standard adapter on the EOS-R, which will work in 4K recording without any special adapters. Attaching a APS-C lens and then a speedbooster would get you that same fisheye, vignetted look that you got when using the Speedbooster in full frame mode.

    Yeah I was wondering about them photography part I figured that much. Last year when I first got in the photography I was using a Canon M50 with a speed booster. That thing was a little beast. My nifty fifty went from F 1.8 down the F 1.2!!! A year later that came was gone I've graduated to the Canon EOS r a bunch of L lenses as well as a couple RF lenses and about $20,000 worth of debt for a small Photography Studio later... I was kind of hoping that this would put the EF lenses into beast mode like my little M50 used to have.

  • @pacificostudios

    Fun Fact: Most directors choose to shoot film with wide-angle lenses almost all the time. Some of the greats even used wide angles at like 19 mm. (I would be wary of distortion from very short lenses like that; 28 mm is plenty good with modern technology). So we've been working in a Super 35 mm format for almost 100 years.

  • @SpencerLupul
    @SpencerLupul 4 года назад +3

    WWwwwweeeeeelllllll *yes*, you do get an extra stop of light....... But that's a bit confusing to say, without acknowledging that you already lost quite a bit of your f-stop when the image was cropped. So, your 16-35mm f/4 is effectively about 28-60mm f/6.9. You then apply the reverse, boosted effect at a x0.71 multiplier, which then gets you to about a 20-42mm f/4.9. So, you almost get your lens back. But it does NOT become a 16-35mm f2.8 FF equivalent lens!

    • @stenlundvideo7663
      @stenlundvideo7663 2 года назад

      actually not true. when the camera is cropped, you do not lose the light because the light is still fully thrown onto the full length sensor and evenly distributed. 2.8 is still 2.8 because regardless if you are in the middle of the sensor in crop, or at the full frame of the sensor - the light is distributed from the aperture evenely regardless. the speedbooster however, focus the light onto a smaller portion of the lens which brightens the specific portion of the sensor being using. So in one case, you are changing the optics of the lens which changes the brightness. However in the other case, you are not optically focusing the light differently, and therefore there is no change.
      I had this same concern but did my own tests to confirm its correct.

For anyone that's really really into Canon, it seems like a good solution. Tacking on $450 is a tough one for anyone not already deep into Canon RF/EF. Actually, the RP seems to be a decent combo when considering price for anyone that has EF glass. I think the crop is slightly less too.

      This device is only for video. 4k video is only 12MP so the megapixel mention there doesn't matter. Correct... it's not "full" full-frame. It's about 1.2x which is dramatically better and more manageable than 1.8x. However... in 2022 I don't think using this camera and metabones thing is worth it anymore. SO many other options now that provide full-frame 4k. Sony a7IV and the Canon R6 are great options.

      3rd party APS-C lenses should work. Unlike EF-S, they’re just EF mount so there’s nothing physically preventing you from attaching the lens to the adapter. DSI Pictures even uses the Sigma 18-35 in his video test.

    • @PTUsher
      @PTUsher 4 года назад

      Jordie Cee yeah the sigma is EF fit not EFS, so it fits the metabones EF mount natively without modding. But Dave has clearly mounted Canon lenses (modding is straightforward - there are loads of how-to vids). I think it’s just a question of whether a particular lens can be mounted (or modded) and how much of its imaging circle covers the cropped portion of the sensor. I think metabones just have to cover themselves - they don’t want to be liable when someone tries modding their canon glass and is upset by the inevitable vignette; after all, these APSC fixes are workable hacks, not perfect designs that pass quality control :)

    It's bizzare that this thing actually exists. When Canon releases a Full Frame 4K uncropped R body it immediately renders this obsolete. I'm surprised Metabones was willing to invest in it.
