    I bought my first Springbank 10 in 2014 in TX for $39.99. I bought my second Springbank 10 in a GA for $62.99. Now I see the same bottle for $89.99. As much as I like it I won’t be buying anymore Springbank 10s at these prices. Instead I’ll opt for the Kilkerran 12 for $79.99.

    The price of SBs have increased in my area as follows: SB10 $100, SB12 $125, SB15 up to $150 from $125, SB18 up to $250 from $200, SB21 $399. Longrow Gold $60, Longrow Red $160, Longrow 21 $450. Unfortunately for me, I love everything Springbank, but Glen Scotia 15 is $80 and it scratches my Campbeltown itch.

      @justwhisky  2 года назад

      Wow thanks for that info. $60 for the Longrow gold is a good price and great juice!
      I haven’t seen the SB 21 for less than $500 so all things considered the $399 doesn’t seem to bad.
      Haven’t had any Glen Scotia yet.
      Cheers!

    I respect Phil and Deepa's palates. Including our mutual preference for bourbon matured single malt. A combo of bourbon and Oloroso casks like Ancnoc is good too.
    This hobby seriously forces me to balance my OCD collecting gene with my frugality and FOMO. I sort of admire Phil for his discipline in focusing on only scotch. As an American I have Bourbon, Rye and domestic Single Malt to also explore.
    In the spring, this year I really explored sherried malt (almost against my better judgement, but I bought a bunch of sherry and half dozen bottles of Single Malt) I think that was Erik Wait's fault.
    The reality is that A'Bunadh and Corryvrecken are overpriced in NY and CT where I shop. I finally scored both for $190 out the door.
    My opinion: They are both quintessential necessities along this journey.
    I do agree that the Ardbeg core range is perfect while the Laphroaig annual releases are not to be missed.

    • @justwhisky
      @justwhisky  2 года назад +1

      Erik Waites fault… lol
      And yes once bitten by that pesky whisky bug we fall down the rabbit hole.
      At my age I’m looking at the volume of unopened bottles and seriously question my sanity. If I stopped buying today i would be challenged to finish most in next 20 years.
      I am now really narrowing my focus. One cannot try them all.
      A simple truth.
      Cheers🥃
      Ps… Corry in my area @ $80

      @@justwhisky I too am looking at the prospect of having a lifetimes supply.
      Erik did a study on the different sherries a few months ago. So naturally I had to buy a few bottles. It's amazing stuff. So full of flavor and only $10-20. The free market dictates a very low demand so a low price. I find fino and Manzanilla delicious but I can't drink more than an ounce or two. Whiskey has a much more enticing finish that makes you go back for more, even though I'm sipping it like scalding hot coffee.
      Erik's videos were very informative, if you haven't seen them yet, highly recommended to get a better idea about whiskys that do reveal the type of sherry influence.

    Hi john. Happy to see another vid. Just my 2 cents. I’ve only had the 10 and the 12. The 10 didn’t do it for me. It had an odd funkiness about it that didn’t impress. I gassed it half way through. I expect to back to it at some time and reevaluate it. The 12 on the other hand is a different monster altogether. The first pours were so unique and dark, even, that I’ll pay well above the 85 that it was the last time I bought them. For anyone who cares it’s Batch15, based on the 56.5% abv. That said, I’ve only seen one other older age statement by me and it’s the 15. Goes for around $125-160. The black and green boxed one. Anyhow. Keep chugging along. Nice trim btw. In time for the Summertime.

    Excellent review!
    I couldn’t agree more with your take on springbank and the diminishing returns for over paying for a hyped up whisky.
    I have had the opportunity to try a few in the last few years and it’s sad that the hype has taken a competent and delicious dram away from real whisky lovers!
    I haven’t seen springbank 10 or any springbank for that matter for a couple of years now on the shelves in my area.
    I however was blessed with the opportunity to pick up a couple bottles of Longrow peated and I’m happy I did!
    I also agree with you that the Ardbeg Corryvrekkan is their best core range whisky!
    Keep up the great objective reviews!

    The longrow 18 I bought in 2020. If anything, it was the 2019 bottling because they had been on the shelf for about 8 months for $189 bucks a pop. I tried the Springbank 10 and 15 prior to making the decision to spend so much on the Longrow 18.

    Great video: about 1/2 of all Scotches are now over-priced and over-hyped == Macallan, Ardbeg, Bruichladdich, Kilchoman, Glenmorangie, Mortlach, Oban, Talisker, on and on . . . just silly really.

    • @justwhisky

      Agree.... I even find myself caught up in it throughout my journey. Just trying to keep it real and in perspective to the best of my ability.... but as just one example... Ardbeg core range seems good value for money as opposed to their committee releases. Trying hard to focus on the half that has good value for money like Ledaig 10 and the like.

    I won't touch Springbank secondary prices. For what they offer though, Springbank generally for me live up to my own excitement (I try not to get to hung up on hype in the real world). My issue with Springbank and Kilkerran is trying to get the bottles I want. If you don't get it within the hour of arrival in the shop in the UK the time is come and gone unless you have had some good fortune. Not sure how they solve that issue when Springbank is only open 9 months of the year, and Kilkerran is only open for the 3 months that Springbank is shut. With so many different styled whiskies to produce and demand so high, it might be an unsolvable issue without some major changes. Thus far I would say Springbank have their RRP at a reasonable rate, considering the demand, however the greed of some retailers not so much but thats whisky as a whole.
    Compare that with Ardbeg and the special releases, which I have bought plenty of in the past, i'm getting to the stage where I'm wondering whether I am going to continue going down that path.

    Hype? How can it be 'worth the hype' if it isn't even available at any price? Springbank and its family members, Longrow, Hazelburn, and Kilkerran, are entirely unavailable locally. I'm personally getting sick of being referred to a 'mythic whisky' that I'll never be able to get ahold of, even if I leave my immediate area. I think that Springbank is either in receivership, or headed in that direction. What is the point of even doing these 'reviews' when folks cannot get ahold of the damned whisky? At any price? "If you can even find one." YES!
    I think you should open them all when Springbank officially files for bankruptcy.
    The same goes for all the referrals to Ledaig. It is NOT available in state. At all. The best I've found is Benromach.

    • @justwhisky
      @justwhisky  Год назад

      I feel your pain… however, when I did this video over a year ago, SB was still somewhat obtainable. In my area the Longrow stay on shelves a while. SB10’s occasionally make an appearance as well as Kilkerran 12&16, but the K12 & SB10 vanish quickly.
      Developing a buying relationship with a local specialty retailer helps over time as well as joining a whisky group… but agree still challenging and seems like a part time job with little reward.
      Cheers 🥃

    • @kellywellington7122

      @@justwhisky There are no 'local specialty retailers'. The state controls everything and runs the outlets which sell spirits (beer and unfortified wines are sold in regular grocery outlets); it is a state monopoly. Residents just found out the commissioners of the statewide liquor (and cannabis) control commission are corrupt and diverting rare and widely sought whisky to themselves and their friends (Pappy Van Winkle bourbon is the named culprit). The state (Oregon) is a former 'blue law' state and we're still stuck with the crap commission. Of course, the state just across the river (Washington) does not limit sales to state stores and they have the same shortages in select names (like Springbank) as we do. Online acquisition is about as difficult. This leads me to believe that Springbank is just on the edge of receivership. So far as I can tell, Springbank has never been sold in my state. ("They never come up to Sector R.") I do wish that those doing the reviews would make it clear that this stuff is exceedingly difficult to get ahold of, regardless of price. Blathering on about how they are wondrous whiskies at phenomenal prices is a really annoying tease that leaves an unbecoming taste on my palate, along with the whiff of meconium on the nose.

      There is a metro area eatery which is obviously supplying itself from out-of-state sources and offers SP10, Hazelburn 12, and non-age-dated Longrow Peated and Kilkerran drams for $28, $36, $22 & $33 per dram, respectively (the tertiary market?). I guess I must make the personal pilgrimage and plunk down obscene amounts of lucre just to taste this stuff, so that after they've announced their demise, I can say I actually tasted it, y'know, back in the day, when it was a real thing. I will note that the barriers to entry on these whiskies are pretty steep and forbidding.
