A peter is also a safe. And someone who opens safes is a 'peter man.' Mind you the days of the peter men being a sort of criminal aristocracy are long past.
@Jack Johnston: Yes we know this is fiction, but programmes like this wouldn't get past the PC brigade of censors today. In fact it was a bit controversial even at the time, it is based loosely upon the real-life Flying Squad.
@@jane1975 Based pretty loosely. Even back then any detective worth their salt knew that you caught more flies with honey. 'The Squad' used to tend to select older detectives with good informants. And what you see here isn't how you cultivate informants. You need finesse.
The real Flying Squad called this programme ‘training films’. I love the line “shared a Peter with him...” cockney rhyming isn’t just slang, it’s a code. Peter = prison cell. How? Cell = Tinkerbell, Tinkerbell was a friend of Peter Pan. Hence Peter = Prison cell. I know, right?

One of the great classic lines of the series - if only we had coppers of that calibre these days.....
I totally agree ' there too soft now ' no wonder we now have so much violent crime.
The Sweeney - top show......no BS.
