I sense that the war between Britain and Germany should’ve never happened, both were from the same blood and same culture so even by that it was wrong for them to go into war. I do remember tho someone stating that when Britain declared war on Germany, it was just buisness and nothing personal because the British policy lies within the balance of power. I honestly believe tho that Germany and Britain should’ve never went against each other.
Germany would have quickly crushed France, then defeated Russia. Ukraine would have been given independence and developed. No Communism, Fascism, WW2 and starvation and death camps. Surveys in the rest is history podcast show a majority saying England should have stayed neutral

The foreign policy of Wilhelm II was slightly erratic. His childhood was terrible. He should have kept Bismarck and focus on pre-written and approved speeches.
A tragedy. If he’d continued Bismarck’s diplomatic system of alliance with Russia and Austria and good relations with Britain, and his father’s support for a parliamentary system of government, the world would have been quite different.

No surprise about your second sentence. That is exactly what Alfred Mahan said in his very influential book about the history of Navies that defined the Pre-WW1 world. That book and its ideas influenced a lot of navies, including the Germans. Alfred Von Tirpitz, grand admiral and Minister of the navy during the Arms race, was very much influenced by Mahan and tried to replicate Royal Navy successes...

Had Queen Victoria's eldest daughter been the heir to the British throne she probably would not have married Frederick of Prussia as I don't think either Bismarck or the British government would have welcomed a possible future personal union between the UK and Prussia/Germany. The British hadn't been too keen on the earlier one with Hanover and later made sure that there wasn't one with the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

Hey Sir Manatee out of curiosity do you know that much info on the Zimmerman Telegram and Germany's 19th and early 20th century's relationship with Mexico?
For an accurate read of Germany's intentions, they needed only read Friedrich von Bernhardi's 1911 bestseller, _Germany and the Next War._ Germans really just don't know when to keep quiet sometimes, and that's a good thing for posterity because it means there are some things they just can't censor, edit or hide after the war.
The Willy - Teddy Relationship. Copied from Social Media. - The uses of ‘friendship’. The ‘personal regime’ of Wilhelm II and Theodore Roosevelt, 1901-1909
No, that was the edited version the government put out to cover Wilhelm's ass. The actual version very clearly stated: _“Should you encounter the enemy, he will be defeated! No quarter will be given! Prisoners will not be taken! _*_Whoever falls into your hands is forfeited."_*
I truly truly appreciate that you took a more nuanced and fair stance on Kaiser Wilhelm II, most people simply take the word of writers of the time that throw him under the bus when he did everything he could to do right by his country and people.
Seems a bit hard to conclude that he genuinely tried to do what was best for the German people considering everything he did do. Seems more like he was often out of his depth and stuck in the past rather than being directly malevolent.
I believe a great deal of fault laid in the German Constitution which really didn't place the Chancellor as a people appointed position rather than just a tool of the Kaiser
Bismarck wanted that way because he actually ruled the first Wilhelm..then he ran into the second everything went left. You're right though, they should've gone full parliamentary at that point but..
The German Empire was Europe's last chance to dominate the world in a fair way. It would've democrataicesd eventually, but our perception of democracy would've been different. Most people would've seen constitutional monarchism as the best way to put democracy in effect. Maybe militarism would've survived. Who knows?
10:24 Having such a glorious moustache, who on Earth would not want to show it of? Who on Earth would listen to such shitty general as Semyon Budyonny if he hadn't had such a glorious moustache? :D Same with Wilhelm II, who would want to be lead by him if he hadn't had that moustache? :D
One of the advantages of monarchies where monarchs still make foreign policy is supposed to be that, as cousins, they feel familial fraternity and can have a quiet word behind the scenes to prevent warfare. Unfortunately, too often familial jealousies make warfare on their behalf that much more likely.
Yes people realised that was nonsense a long time ago. Renaissance scholars like More and Erasmus wrote about how that never works. And just looking at one example, the French Court’s policy of marrying daughters of German Princely Families led directly to various wars as Loius XIV pressed inheritance claims from his relations’ wives.
What? How does this situation prove anything but the press inflaming tensions? If the monarchs had more real power and influence Wilhelm II's desire for better relations would have simply led to better relations.
@@ryankasch5561Historically, that's a myth. A lot of wars prior to 1814 started because of family (a dispute over land ownership or succession being the most common). Also, kings having more power so they can stop wars? If that were the case then all wars in ancient, classical, medieval, Renaissance, Early Modern, Enlightenment, etc would not happen...

"Let's quickly take a look at Germany's diplomatic situation in the years leading up to the Daily Telegraph crisis." Aw, do we have to? It's depressing enough! Why can't that Hohenzollern learn to keep his trap shut?! Seriously though, hasn't there been some speculation that Willy may have had a form of ADHD?
If he had ADHD is hard to tell but he most likely had an inferiority complex because of his deformed arm if you look at his pictures you will always see that one of his arms is always hidden, as well as his borderline abusive mother and her quest to try and fix his arm with some really questionable medical treatments by a lot of doctors hired by his mother. It properly let to him trying to prove that he is worth something by always trying to get involved in politics.
Yeah he had his personal hatred for queen vicky as he blamed his arm on Britain… Even as a German I can say he was one of the worst leaders in terms of decision making (excluding hitler for clarification)
> Seriously though, hasn't there been some speculation that Willy may have had a form of ADHD? It would explain why after the 1912 war council he couldn't shut up about his plans to the Swiss ambassador.
Why you didn't mention the previous (~1880-1910) immense germanophobic writing in the british Press? Yes, it came from fictional literature but influenced the common folks in general and also the printing presses writing. Take a look into that. Its astaunding!
Probably because he didn't want to mention Treitschke, Fritsch, Ratzel, Bernhardi or the host of other Anglophobic characters in Germany running their mouths off since 1871. It's very hard to mention the effect without the cause.
I mean was that really the cause or anything or just Tabloids being Tabloids? Sure Tabloids suck ass and cause a lot of problems but they're often a symptom just as much as a cause. Like the Daily Mail will still regularly write dumb shit about literally every other country in the world but the Daily Mail is also widely mocked in British society and is far from the only newspaper.
So, Wilhelm II was just a leader who wanted the best for his people, but couldn’t get the words right or put his own personal emotions and feelings aside? Wilhelm II has to be one of the most sympathetic characters in the early twentieth century. He tried his best, but his own flaws were too great and his situation was just too precarious. Makes me wonder what his legacy would have been like if he had been in a better international situation.
But like Germany was in a pretty great position internally, it had a huge and rapidly growing economy with a well educated population and an excellent military. All Wilhelm had to do was not fuck shit up by running his mouth yet he did that and then consistently failed to understand why he kept pissing everyone off because he was seemingly so self centered and old fashioned. Like the whole comment about the majority of Germans being anglophobic reveals his backwards ideas about "rable-rousing commoners" that not only was obviously going to offend the commoners in question but also was obviously not going to go over well in the UK, a country that had some very strong democratic and liberal traditions. Not only that but claiming credit for a British military victory was obviously never going to go over well, but he was apparently too self centered to realize that.
It’s pronounced boo-r with a long oo made in the front of your mouth and a hard rolling r. I normally wouldn’t nitpick, but it sounded like Wilhelm was chatting to boa constrictors in South Africa. Which might be kinda based actually
Hardly disagree with your conclusion. I don’t feel sorry at all for him. No one forced him to write this interview. He was clearly unfit to rule any empire
It's funny that Wilhelm was sorta seen like American Republican Presidents today, like they say stupid shit but you shouldn't mind them because that's just what they're like. Usually it doesn't really do significant damage to diplomatic relations though Trump did manage to seriously damage American-European relations but he's quite the special case.
In this time period monarchs either learned to shut up and stay out of politics or they were deposed, sometimes not peacefully. Most of the monarchs who were deposed seemingly hadn't understood that time had simply left them behind, in a world where a public debate exists having a politically active position that cannot be changed simply isn't possible.
Look up Carl Peters's activities in Tanzania, what the German government decided to do about it, and then what Kaiser Wilhelm decided to do about that.
are we sure it was complete nonsense ? England often had the " Russian Strategy " just throw men an resources at an objective until you smother it..a look through Victoria's private correspondence might be in order..In WW1 if the German Army had listened to him (defensive position in the West and full on attack in the East) the war might have ended differently..
Say what you will about him, von Moltke was right. You just can't take one set of highly detailed plans and replace them on the fly with another one without everything going to pot. Besides, the Kaiser only said that because he was momentarily under the impression France would stay neutral; in the 1912 Imperial German war council, he was singing a rather different tune.
This kinda further reveals why this entire suggestion is stupid, there's no chance in hell that Victoria had any personal involvement in the Boer war. That was solely left up to colonial administrators and commanders. Victoria mostly stayed out of British politics and the direct management of the empire and was more of a figurehead that'd occasionally play a role in diplomacy or make some sort of good will gesture. She very much established the traditions that the British royal house would stick to and are the reason why they're still around.
I didn't know Trump was itching to start a war with Mexico to take lebensraum, or that one of his staffers wrote _The United States and the Next War_ spelling out that position.

Could you please make a video on Einkreisungstheorie? Since it was Wilhelm´s fault for the state of German international affairs, it would be interesting to learn about the actual architects behind it.

If I were the Devil’s advocate supporting the White Man’s Burden… I’d encourage more conflict among the colonialist powers, but some politicians among them would’ve figured out the metamedia propaganda, and you are right, WWI might’ve been much different or avoided altogether
Well said, that's how it is!
Wilhem definitely had a temeper.
Great video! :)
No na*is, no communists, no US domination, no cold war, no islamism. A perfect world.

He said the expansion of German navy was to protect trade
Has Lavader commented on the Hale interview? I'd love to see him try to spin that one.

You should make a video about the freicorps I’ve seen many people discussing them on the internet as of late and many of them (mostly right wing or anti communists) praising them and just as many (mostly left wing and anti fascists) calling them basically just Nazis in a different time period, I think it would be both interesting and enlightening to get a German and German historical perspective on the subject
The death's head hat say's it all
He hated Britain due to his English doctor, and the reality of hostility from Edward VII & George. The British economy had already fallen behind the German Empire, and with Danish wife Bertie he and his son George loathed the Prussians. The first world war ended the British Empire, and turned the leading creditor into the leading debtor nation , and the unwinding of overseas territories over the next 40 years. Kaiser was just thick and provided the backdrop to the Military Dictatorship vive l'entente cordial

If the current eldest child succession rules of the British Crown were applied he would have been King of Britain and Germany. His mother was the eldest child of Queen Victoria
They tried to pull that before Princess Victoria was crowned Queen. Hanover said "No" and cut ties with the Royal Family in Britain...

I wonder what view the British elites held of the German empire and if it had any effect on GB declaring war on Germany.

Admit it, the Kaiser really needed a Press agent. Dude is making it far worse by speaking on things unedited...

Had Wilhelm ever visited the United States? Not necessarily as a kaiser.
The German Empire was Europe's last chance to dominate the world in a fair way. It would've democrataicesd eventually, but our perception of democracy would've been different. Most people would've seen constitutional monarchism as the best way to put democracy in effect. Maybe militarism would've survived. Who knows?
'Dominate the world in a fair way' 😂😂😂
10:24 Having such a glorious moustache, who on Earth would not want to show it of?

@@Helania12 That is true enough. I hear he loathed his parents (or at least his mother, at any rate).

Something something astoundingly stupid German PR something something Willy was an idiot
Most of the bad bias are made by British propaganda
Also, despite everything Wilhelm II did not want to wage war against Europe especially since the monarchs of Britain and Russia were his relatives.
@@toledochristianmatthew9919 > 1912 Imperial German war council would suggest otherwise.
Ah yes, inflaming tensions between Berlin and London at every possible opportunity is just so sympathetic. It’s so sympathetic that it’s stupid.

@@bobdollaz3391 Man was persistant 😉
In this time period monarchs either learned to shut up and stay out of politics or they were deposed, sometimes not peacefully. Most of the monarchs who were deposed seemingly hadn't understood that time had simply left them behind, in a world where a public debate exists having a politically active position that cannot be changed simply isn't possible.
free my boy Kaiser Wilhelm he ain't done nothing
If that’s what was published, imagine what he would write if he had access to Twitter… 😮
