I know this is an old video but.. damn! It's so good. You get through all the rules and you also show how you can achieve fairly epic skirmishes with just the starter set. This game definitely deserves way more attention than what it is getting. I hope TTcombat will pump distribution up to reach all those interested. Sadly, it may be too late though...
Dropzone commander had a lot off active players and seemed to be growing naturally. I guess this was just one to much for a small company like Hawk. I do not know how big TT Combat are but This outgrew Hawk it seesm to me...
Am I the only one watching this who is constantly being reminded of moments from the Ark Royal books? I can't wait to get my hands on this game, Dave and Hawk have done an amazing job.
Thankfully they did realise the ownership afterwards during scoring, but the image of UCM troops shooting down their own ship was amusing for a moment.
On turn 1 Dave says you can't change orbital layer on max thrust but the rulebook says you can. Only Weapons Free, Active Scan or Silent Running stop you as you have to be able to turn.
Im halfway through the rulebook now and while its mostely well designed and looks just amazing, there are already several typos and, whats worse, contradictionary statements and some really weird/messy editing where some phrases seem out of place, like it remains since some previous edition. I dont care too much about stuff like this, the book looks great and most content is clear as day, but some things will really need errata/faq asap!
Marcus Sundbom an icbm is a massive 100-150ft tall 3 stage rocket and most fly in a suborbital trajectory up then down not accurate enough to hit a ship as you don't need to be to spot on when your weapon 170+ kiloton explosion
Great video! I have played a couple times now, its a fantastic game. I highly recommend it, even if you only ever play with the starter forces it is still loads of fun!
Everything looks great! My only complaint is that there's no concurrent launch of Cruiser boxes or something, but with so many options for frigates and cruisers in the starter boxes a second starter seems like a totally reasonable investment. Well done.
So the starter box comes with a 4x3 map, and the regular missions are usually designed for a 4x4 map. How would the game scale to a full "standard" table, 6x4?
Already played a little 3x3 game with my buddy and the mechanics work well, though obviously the scourge were too close too quick. Can't wait to play on a bigger board and see how the spikes really change the game. Think Dave had the same issue vs Scourge on this starter 3x4 board. How this was good for clarifying a few mistakes made in my first game, especially around scald.
Looks, again, great! I can't wait to get my stuff and start playing the game :) I really like the debris fields, just to have something on the table to maneuvering around. And, as it is in DZC, the possibility to score points by fulfilling the scenario goals is awesome (not just a simple death match). The activation card system is tactically challenging, which promises a lot of fun (and a lot of face-palms). Curious to see what comes in the next waves (of cause the mighty battleships we have seen before, but what about the corvettes? ;) ) I am happy to say: Well done Hawk Wargames! Thanks for this demo game guys!
Absimilliard78 I noticed that but I presume a lot of pressure to teach/present and play. I know when me n my buddy played we screwed up the scald rule.
Yes you can use your Dropfleet models to provide support in Dropzone if you wished to make a much larger campaign involving smaller battles in Dropzone and requiring transport in Dropfleet.
I'm curious, is there any reason to not just get into atmosphere as quickly as possible? If everybody hits of 6's surely it's whoever has the most dice that wins.
Why would you ever take ships that can't go into atmosphere? Isn't that where the objectives are and by extension where your opponents objective claiming ships will be?
lokisrun for all factions but the Scourge, their frigates can't go into Atmosphere. Corvettes are being released in the near future and are in the book and they can hunt things in Atmosphere and don't suffer the 6+ penalty
really struggling to see the strength of the UCM. they seem to just die as their only advantage is good armour which seems to go away the instant the scourge get close which seems really easy for them to do and that scourge burn through is disgusting. 4 dice burn through for the low low price of not putting on a spike.
Dave got really shafted with the rolls. UCM have the best BTL (failed this game hard) and Lima frigates (not in the starter). This help you put spikes on early to hit ships at longer range. (3 damage with flash = major spike) All of this lets you pick out targets before they become a threat. They also have a great save, Scouge's high damage helps mitigate that to sum respect, but again a lucky 6 roll turned all those hits first volley with his BTL into crits that shouldn't really happen most of the time. Dude got 3 more sixes in a row as well.
Looks good. I might pick up the starter set for Christmas. Tell me, I'm new to hawk games, is Dropzone Commander compatible with dropfleet? Having orbital and ground battles going on at once just sounds amazeballs.
In short yes you can have games of Dropzone be affected by your games of Dropfleet if you have both games running at the same time, it's a cool mechanic where if you use orbital bombardment you can have that finger of god moment on the ground. Bow Justin
what the missiles burn up on the way down from orbit to atmo. sorry but missiles today called ICBMs can go to orbit and back. your telling me that we lost that tech but have ships with FTL.
John Geary because theyre specifically designed to do that, and pay a weight penalty for heat shielding, etc. A pure space ship to ship design doesn't need that - so if you build it without it, will be lighter, or faster, or carry a bigger warhead, and be generally better at being an antiship missile than one trying to do both jobs.
lame. how about letting me the player activate a ship when i need it to be activated. lost me at 5:30 when talking about how to set up the ship activations.
Shooting through a fluid will always be different than through vacuum, this game chooses to reflect that in a way that makes sense from a balance perspective.
atmo is not a fluid. i think people give this game more credit than it is worth. its a star ship game that just looks stupid and lacks any sort of real hard sifi elements.
John Geary dude a fluid can be a gas, a fluid is just anything that conforms to its space and expands to fill a given volume. if you look up "definition of fluid" you will see that our atmosphere is by definitiona fluid, hence why "fluid dynamics" pertains to both water and air. this game has more hard sci fi than most.... point defence, orbital layers, silent running, orbital decay... take a look at the current most popular space ship minis game: x-wing. x- wing has none of these, and when a game comes along and adds them you are complaining its not "hard sci fi" enough? jeez man, did someone beat your family to death with a box of dropfleet?
The game has some quirks but is overall an amazing game that also offers some new concepts and ideas to the genre. The things you are whining about is both logical and mechanically interesting since this is after all still a game and not reality.

@@PMMagro TTcombat has handled it quite good so far afaik
Am I the only one watching this who is constantly being reminded of moments from the Ark Royal books?
I can't wait to get my hands on this game, Dave and Hawk have done an amazing job.
Ark royal, and the crimson world's books, they took from a lot of different sci fi
At 1:25:00 they said that they could shoot the military base at the Berlin. But it was controlled by Dave.
Plus they got the shooting from it wrong as its signature not scan I believe
Thankfully they did realise the ownership afterwards during scoring, but the image of UCM troops shooting down their own ship was amusing for a moment.
Wish I could get a starter, but can't find them in Canada in stock at the moment
Awsome Game and I Just love the models. Hope to see more of Dropfleet on Beastsofwar!

My half of the starter set just arrived. So glad I'm getting the scourge, Total fit for my playstyle :)
I love how killing you enemy can be MORE dangerous for you than them !
Great video! I have played a couple times now, its a fantastic game.
I highly recommend it, even if you only ever play with the starter forces it is still loads of fun!
The build up is brilliant! The ships reminds me of Battleship Galaxies.
Thanks for this exellent battle report. Shows many details.
Everything looks great! My only complaint is that there's no concurrent launch of Cruiser boxes or something, but with so many options for frigates and cruisers in the starter boxes a second starter seems like a totally reasonable investment. Well done.
So you can move freely up out of atmo. I thought you had to max thrust and then only move 3inch. That was in the beta rules any way
So the starter box comes with a 4x3 map, and the regular missions are usually designed for a 4x4 map.
How would the game scale to a full "standard" table, 6x4?
I'd really like my pledge to arrive guys! No pressure BUT PRESSURE
wish I could have seen the board......again
Already played a little 3x3 game with my buddy and the mechanics work well, though obviously the scourge were too close too quick. Can't wait to play on a bigger board and see how the spikes really change the game. Think Dave had the same issue vs Scourge on this starter 3x4 board.

Dave forgot his Point Defence for his Moscow.
Absimilliard78 I noticed that but I presume a lot of pressure to teach/present and play. I know when me n my buddy played we screwed up the scald rule.
Did they forget to put troops down on turn 4? Dave would have a big advantage in the middle objective.
So, are we meant to move in the direction of facing, or can we move sideways etc? It seems they do both in here.
Stephen Smith direction of facing only. i havent seen otherwise in this video or the beta rules.
Cheers. It seemed at the start that some ships were 'strafing' but that could just be the small screen I'm watching on :)
Very interresstin game. Would there be a way to combine Dropzone and Dropfleet? that would be epic

lokisrun not all ships can go to Atmosphere and you only can move 3"
Why would you ever take ships that can't go into atmosphere? Isn't that where the objectives are and by extension where your opponents objective claiming ships will be?
lokisrun you have to take cruisers and other ships as part of the fleet building and not all frigates can go into Atmosphere
What advantage does a frigate that can't go into atmosphere have over one that can?
lokisrun for all factions but the Scourge, their frigates can't go into Atmosphere.

Dream146 Best Burnthrough in the game, great ship Flexibility, best Bombardment ships in the game.

Can't wait to get this :)
just great game & video :)
Love the game.. Mini s are too expensive
NGL for a starter box and supplement box for a full game being £70 is very reasonable.
really hope I win the prizes of the boot camp
Dave look, you are great at designing games, but at rolling dices... that is just not your thing :D :D

shooting through atmo is not like shooting through a soup. i am glade i did not by this game. what a pile of shit.
Shooting through a fluid will always be different than through vacuum, this game chooses to reflect that in a way that makes sense from a balance perspective.

Try to shoot a laser at 100 km range. Let see how thin that soup really is, because even 100,000 km is trivial in space :p
sorry but this game is a pile of crap that has had a lot of polish on it. but still crap.
