I own a Henry .45-70 and a .357 Steel model. I love them. I think the color case hardened models are beautiful. The lack of a side gate never bothered me. I have a Winchester 94 that I worked all summer to buy in 1974 when I was 17. It is mint except for the scratches on the side gate. Still the best 74 bucks I ever spent. I live in Chippewa Falls Wi. and when I had to get the recall work done on my Henry single shot, they had me bring the gun into their building. I didn't get in very far though. LOL
I have a Henry, but it’s not the side gate model. It’s a 357 magnum. I bought it as a companion for my Ruger GP100, also in 357 magnum. It has the octagonal barrel, color case hardened receiver, and the wood to metal fit is impeccable. My next Henry will be the side gate model. Henry rifles are beautiful. A true work of art.
Henry has always made awesome lever actions, and yours is no exception! It reminds me of my Remington 512 Sportmaster, it unloads the same way. I looked up her date on the barrel, and she's May 1942! It's a great tube fed bolt action .22.
I love my Henry smoothest action ever, forget all the rest it has to be Henry... And I always loved my others until I got a Henry and then I said bye-bye Winchester
I like the henry and had always wanted to buy one , but without the side gate ,i didn't like it as much as my marlin 336 . Now , with the addition of the side gate , they look great and more functional .I have just purchased a henry big boy brass side gate in .357 / .38 special cal . ( so beautiful ) and a henry big boy steel blued side gate in .30 - .30 cal . Both are beautiful rifles . Fit and finish is very good . I'm glad i waited all this time . Thanks for the video and info. Safe shooting to you sir .
Henry, IMO, stands alone in American firearms manufacturing in terms of fit, finish, function, innovation and value for dollar spent. Actions are smooth as butter. When they worked, Remlin's may have edged them slightly in accuracy but Remlin's are synonymous with junk. Really no comparison... you buy a Henry, you're pretty much always, beyond satisfied.
I've had a Marlin 444 for more than thirty years only one malfunction and it was my fault. However a month or two before Covid I purchased a Henry Big Boy in 357/38 special. It's a Great rifle I even got the dye to reload for it. The 444 is not a fun rifle to shoot because of the kick and cost of ammo. I reload for that too. The Henry is fun and really accurate. I m not buying anymore firearms. But if I was it would be another Henry in .44 magnum. Well done video as usual thanks!
The only thing with a side gate is the gate plate gets scratched up a bit loading that way, while loading into the tube doesn’t. Also I like the uninterrupted action and more case color.
I’ve been hunting and shooting my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington for years. When I want to unload my rifle I simply press on loading gate and the rounds are pushed out by the spring. The 35 is rimless as opposed to the 30-30 which has a rimed case but this method should still work relatively well.
Question for you Henry owners ! The lever position safety does it require the shooter to apply constant pressure to fire or will it stay in position on its own once shooter closes it fully . Awesome video! Thanks
No such safety on a Henry. It has a transfer bar for safe operation. That lever safety that you are speaking of is on those like Uberti forearms. If your lever is 1/4 or more open, then it will not operate.
@@garysmith643 Yes. Once the the lever is worked, no pressure needed on it. Unlike on a Uberti, 1873 which I also own. On the Uberti the lever must be pulled against the bottom of the stock to depress the safety. Not on a Henry.
Nice looking rifle! You say its a time tested action, similar to Marlin than? I have always been able to unload my Marlins back out of loading gate, all but the chambered round that is. I don’t ever load more than 4 when Im hunting, usually just 3. If that doesn’t do it, my loss.
Nice intro to a very nice rifle, Dave, but why did you not mention and not demonstrate the transfer bar safety? It's one of the rifle's most significant features.
It's a case of "to each his own". I wish the 45-70 case hardened came with the 30 30 shape and lever. I just wished there were more Henry's available. I have been waiting for a Big Boy Steel in 44 Mag for close to a year now.
A friend coming upstate to hunt bought a new Henry Stainless synthetic 30-30. He paid over $1000.00 with tax to have a rifle with no ammunition. The salesman pulled a fast one on him. He sold the old design Henry at over MSRP and used the excuse that the ammunition order was coming in next week with plenty of 30-30. Luckily I had two boxes, I told him next time to ask me before buying a firearm. The gun shop so you coming.
I am gun shy of pistol calibers. I bought 357/38SP revolvers and never saw a 357/38SP for the whole pandemic and even now they are scarce and $1 a round. .22 seems it for ammunition in CALOCO.
I just got the henry that I have been looking for over a year. It is the 3030 color case side gate. It matches his big brother. Which is the 45 colt color case side gate. 🤫🤫🤫
What about the transfer bar safety? Hammer cannot physically hit the primer unless trigger is pulled. Hammer cannot slip from under your thumb and fire a cartridge.
I found color case side gate on leadfeather guns and ammo out of winter haven, Florida. I found the 45 colt and 44 magnum both in color case side gate on grabagun.
