- Speed from 1994 is a classic.
Speed 2 is not...
Speed 2: Cruise Control is a 1997 American action thriller film, and a sequel to Speed (1994).
The film was produced and directed by Jan de Bont, and written by Randall McCormick and Jeff Nathanson, based on a story by de Bont and McCormick.
Sandra Bullock stars in the film, reprising her role from Speed, while Jason Patric and Willem Dafoe co-star. The film was released by 20th Century Fox on June 13, 1997.
The plot involves couple Annie and Alex taking a vacation in the Caribbean aboard a luxury cruise ship, which is hijacked by a villain named Geiger who hacked into the ship's computer system.
As they are trapped aboard the ship, Annie and Alex work with the ship's first officer to try to stop the ship, which they discover is programmed to cruise into an oil tanker.
De Bont came up with the idea for the film after he had a recurring nightmare about a cruise ship crashing into an island.
Speed star Keanu Reeves was initially supposed to reprise his role for the sequel, but decided not to commit and was replaced by Patric prior to filming.
Production took place aboard Seabourn Legend, the ship on which the film is set. The film's final scene, where the ship crashes into the island of Saint Martin, cost almost one quarter of the film's $110 million budget, and set records as the largest and most expensive stunt ever filmed.
Many interior scenes aboard the ship were shot on soundstages in the Greater Los Angeles Area. The film's soundtrack featured mostly reggae music, and Mark Mancina composed the film score, which was released as an album 13 years after the film's release.
Critics had mostly negative reception towards the film, criticizing its acting, story, and characters.
One major criticism was that the film's setting on a slow-moving cruise ship was much less thrilling than Speed's setting on a fast-moving bus.
It was nominated for eight Golden Raspberry Awards, and won the award for "Worst Re-Make or Sequel".
Ghostbusters 2 is definitely underrated, I actually prefer it to the first one.
Even Sandra Bullock hated this film. I do not blame her for hating on it.
Yeah this movie didn't need to be made Speed 1 was good enough
Even Sandra Bullock referred to this movie as the, and I quote, "worst piece of crap ever made."
I remember reading a review for this movie on imdb and the reviewer called it: Speed 2: snooze control. lol xD
I have only seen bits and pieces of this, not the whole thing. I still can't get over Tamia's attempt at acting when she said "Because I'm not wearing underwear, Harvey!" Good thing she stuck with singing, which she is good at.
2010 Unstoppable is how you make a Speed sequel.
this movie was a p.o.s. hard to believe it was spawned from such a good movie
I remember falling asleep in the cinema when it came out. Never bothered to watch it again.
Sandra bullock herself even hates this movie ,
This sequel should have not been made in the first place. The first speed was the perfect ending where it did not need a sequel. Believe it or not, I actually tried to watch this a couple times and I just wanted to turn the movie off because it was that boring to watch. I do not blame Keanu Reeves for not being in this film at all. Even Sandra Bullock herself hates this movie and i dont blame her for hating on it to be honest.
I still don't get why this gets 2 thumbs up. I respect Siskel and Ebert too, but I will never understand that the same two critics who bashed and disrespected Chris Farley, slasher films and the Friday the 13th series over the years actually liked this movie. And like you said Matt, they didn't even give thumbs up to the classics you mentioned but they did to this lol that's hilarious to me. Also, this has to be the only movie ever that was nominated for Razzies that both Siskel and Ebert actually liked I think lol.
Critics sometimes get too opinionated.
oh yeah, they both had a real distaste for slashers which was annoying as fuck.
This maybe the biggest fall from grace for a sequel of all-time.
To me Staying Alive aka Saturday Night Fever 2 and Grease 2 are worse but yeah this isn’t too far behind them. I think I would rather even watch Caddyshack 2 then Speed 2.
I saw Speed 2 and I didn't care for it at all. However, some of the special effects were pretty good.
Absolutely insane to me that the Director could go from such an entertaining, heartfelt, and just plain awesome fucking movie in "Twister", to this. That movie had so many likeable and interesting characters, extremely memorable action, ambitious directing... and I could go on.. I will never understand what could happen to the guy in just a year to follow up that movie with this soul-less garbage. Maybe he just emptied his tank.
...and Jason Patric couldn't have been a worse pick as a lead in an action movie. The dude is stale turd in this.
the script was the original script for die hard 3 but they decided to rewrite it to a speed sequel, in a very short period of time.
Thank god for that
Never actually saw this film and really don't care too. solid rant matt
This was terrible. I remember renting it from the local library once. I kept checking the time every few minutes and asking "When is something exciting going to happen in this movie?".
I honestly I think keanu Reeves would have saved this movie, I think the box office gross would have did a lot better and the movie would've made a lot more money.
I doubt it I think the film would of still fail
I don’t like this movie to be sure it’s bad and boring but I don’t really hate it like so many do. However I do agree with the comments here about Jason Patric. I remember him being ok in Lost Boys but he was incredibly boring in this. Keanu Reeves is wooden but he worked in Speed 1 just fine in spite of it and yes he and Bullock have chemistry. Patric is boring and has zero with Bullock. When Reeves passed on Speed 2 Bullock as Annie should have been the sole heroine. The deaf girl scene with her and Patric was tasteless and handled horribly especially when you realize he and Bullock watched Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita in the prior scene. I know they were trying to be cute and innocent but I cringed. Speed 1 had some stupid lines to be sure but it was balanced otherwise by being purely entertaining.
Yeah this movie sucked. Luckily I rented the movie instead of watching it on the big screen. Hey have you reviewed Alive (1993) w/ Ethan Hawke, about the Uruguayan Rugby team that crash landed in the Andes Mountian and have to resort to cannibalism for survival?
Nah I Haven't reviewed/seen Alive.
Alive is a great book the size of a phone book
Twister was a solid film In My opinion. Same with speed.
22:39 ROFL!
Solid rant bro on a useless sequel your 100% right ''Speed'' didn't need a follow up at all IMO!
yep lol this movie was terrible! Havent seen it for years ! Great job on the review!
Are u going to do an xmen days trailer review Matt?
Nah, I don't do trailer reviews anymore.
Speed 2 is about as bad as movies can get.
imo speed 2 is a good movie. not as good as the first one but i love the film
they should have at least edited down to 90 mins instead of 125
Great rant, I agree this is horrible.
I can't believe i paid to see this piece of crap in theaters as a teen!
I was fortunate to not have watched this movie back in the day because of all the bad things I've heard.
What was the name of the actress who said, " cuz i'm not wearing any underwear Harvey" ?
her name is tamia
I wonder if this movie was called anything else, and had no connection to "speed 1", would it still be a bad movie or just a average movie?
Bad. It'd still have a boring hero with no personality or charisma. A lot of lackluster action (most of it is just people running inside the ship from point A to point B). A lame PG-13 rating. Slow pace (should not have been an over 2 hour film.) Lack of chemistry between the two main stars. Supporting actors/characters were uninteresting or unfunny. So I'd still pick bad. Being a sequel to Speed just makes it look even worse.
***** good point! you on point as always Matt.
Cheap good watch.
Good review. Although, I usually associate "cruise" as maintaining the same speed, could be slow or fast. Still, the concept is pretty bad. Tom Cruise, on the other hand, I associate with schizophrenic whack job. lol
The title is probably a double entendre, both referring to cruising speed on vehicles, as well as taking place on a cruise ship. Still a dumb film, though.
Roger ebert gave home alone 3 thumbs up
I didn’t like Home Alone 3 but probably would rather watch it again than Speed 2. It’s still bad but it still has the Home Alone formula at least. Speed 2 doesn’t have the same formula as Speed 1 because it’s on a ship.
This movie sounds horrible. I can't wait to rent it!
The action was alright, but yeah, not enough "speed" and the stupid dialogue killed this film. And the ending..... WTH.
You didn't like Narc? I thought that film was amazing, one of my favorite crime thrillers, dark, gritty, and bleak, loved Narc. Have you ever seen Sleepers? Very good film with a good Jason Patric performance even though Kevin Bacon steals the show. Never seen Speed 2, always seemed like a piece of shit, awful idea.
I got a real kick out of this movie I think because back in the day it was too stupid to make any sense a bit like Titanic or The Happening its literally so stupid its funny but makes for a shit sequel. There were so many better movies in the summer of 97'
I liked it when it was out but after a few years this all does makes sense but yeah i think this movie is dogshit terminator 2 was better than this even part 3 even though it sucked lol but u know deep rising was out at around this time even that was better than this pile of shit lol
I hate the wizard of Oz
