    Thank you for the video! I did run into yet another issue with this same identical lock. This was during installation. The 2 screws that secure the key pad to the back plate were either the wrong size or they forgot to send HeMan with the kit to install. They were overly tight and seemed to almost be the wrong size?? I had to literally use a channel lock and some wax to get them to go in. I could NOT get them to set tight at all with just the basic screw driver and had to back them out and work on the holes, basically recapping the holes to work with the hardware. It took me more than 2 hours just to get the screws to work! I did get them secure finally (after breaking a sweat and swearing a LOT) and the rest of the installation went fine. I did a search to see if anyone else had this issue and didn't run across anything. I came VERY close to taking this set back to Menards and finding something else. Im sure it will serve us well. Thank you for your video! Very helpful.

      Hmm, I didn’t have any issues like yours with the included hardware. It may have been a case of the wrong hardware being included in the box or maybe even a return. Glad you finally were able to get it installed as it’s been a great lock for us. Thanks for watching!

    Looks great! Thanks for another great walkthrough. My biggest frustration with all the smart locks is price. I know they are complex, but as we are finding with so many things in buying a new house, “everything is $200.00.” None of my deadbolts slide freely, so I expect I have some repair and adjustments ahead before we can save up for locks.

    • @ReyG_HKSH
      @ReyG_HKSH  6 лет назад +3

      Closing on the house is just the beginning of expenses. I don’t know how much I’ve spent so far on smart home accessories and I don’t want to know. I did try to limit most of my buying to during holiday season to save on all the sales.
      Definitely make sure all the deadbolts slide freely. I can’t emphasize that enough. The original deadbolt was “sticky” and the Schlage initially worked but I kept getting errors so I had to modify the door jamb. Good luck, and thank you for watching 👍

    Hi Rey! I really appreciated the specific comparisons you made in this video, and letting us know your metrics for choosing your lock! Those were the most useful to me. Soooo... its been almost 4 years. I'd love to hear if you might choose this one again, or another!
    I find I have the same metrics you do: I want to be able to open the door by key, keypad, voice, (have the ability to use random and timed codes), but the most important thing to me is the idea that I can just approach the door with my phone and it will open. (I think the Friday lock does this with geolocation(?).) I SO often have both hands and arms full that clicking buttons on my phone is just as hard as using a key. Also, my neighbors are super close, so I'd rather not use my voice, if possible. If Friday does it, is it not safe enough for Schlage to do it, or was I misinformed about Friday?
    I read your response to someone... "I STRONGLY recommend not compromising security for convenience. That being said, there is a workaround. If you have an unused HomeKit device like a smart outlet you can create an automation that turns on that outlet when you arrive home, then set your lock to unlock whenever that outlet is turned on. For example, let’s name the outlet “key” and set it to turn on when you arrive home. Then create another automation that sets the Schlage smart lock to unlock whenever “key” is turned on. At this point you’ll also now have the ability to ask Siri on HomePod to unlock the door by asking Siri to turn on “key.” I personally wouldn’t compromise security for convenience but this is a workaround."
    ... But I'm sorry... I'm not sure I follow. When you say "when you arrive home," do you mean 'when your phone approaches the door/ enters wi-fi range'? How would asking Siri to turn on "key" be any different from asking Siri to unlock the door?

    • @ReyG_HKSH
      @ReyG_HKSH  2 года назад +1

      Hi, thanks for your thoughtful question. I would choose a Schlage for my front door again if I had to do it over, though I would wait for the new Encode Plus since it will have support for Home Key.
      As far as the workaround, it could possibly make your home less secure since you can set a geofence to open the door as you approach as well as ask Siri to turn on "key." It could also be susceptible to people yelling at your Siri from outside a window if you have HomePods or iPhones/iPads sitting on a table and unlock the door. The difference from asking Siri without this workaround is that you need to unlock your device via Face ID or Touch ID (or AppleWatch) before Siri will unlock and smart locks.
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

  • @RaGingKane773
    @RaGingKane773 6 лет назад

    Rey G, I just installed the lock. Works fine but I have to be right by my door for the app to pick up the lock which sucks. My Apple TVs are in my upstairs man cave and the master bedroom which is on the 1st floor but opposite end of the house. So even with me inside my home it doesn’t do me any good unless I get the WiFi adaptor. Apple needs to come up with something better than forcing you to use the Apple TV as a hub. Everyone can’t have it within 30 ft of the door

    • @ReyG_HKSH
      @ReyG_HKSH  6 лет назад +1

      Ray Gosberry Yeah, Bluetooth range is about 20-30 feet so I can see why you’re having problems and walls only make things worse. The Schlage wi-fi adapter won’t extend the HomeKit range as I understand. If you have an extra AppleTV, HomePod or iPad you can place closer to the door that may help. There were supposed to be some Bluetooth extenders on the horizon but nothing yet.

    • @RaGingKane773
      @RaGingKane773 6 лет назад

      Rey G yeah, I know the WiFi adaptor won’t help with HomeKit. But it will at least give me the ability to check on things when I’m away. I placed my iPad close to the door this morning just to test things out and see how it works. Won’t be a long term solution but at least I can see if it works while I’m away from home.

    • @ReyG_HKSH
      @ReyG_HKSH  6 лет назад +2

      Whenever HomeKit accesses a secure device (one that grants access into the home), it requires some sort of authentication (Passcode, TouchID, FaceID), on an iOS device. It’s a security feature that won’t let anyone enter your home if you lose your iPhone, nor will they be able to yell inside your open window to ask Siri to unlock the door.
      I STRONGLY recommend not compromising security for convenience. At this point you’ll also now have the ability to ask Siri on HomePod to unlock the door by asking Siri to turn on “key.” I personally wouldn’t compromise security for convenience but this is a workaround. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

    Hey Rey, I have a question. I live in an apartment and want to install this lock, in case I move anytime soon...can I just remove it and uninstall it and reinstall it on another door? Is it removable like that? Or once its installed in a door it stays there forever or how does it work? Thanks for the attention!

      Yes, it can be removed but you may leave behind mounting holes. No problem if your door is painted since you can just patch and repaint, a bit tricky if you have a natural stained wood door. Thanks for watching!

    If you had to choose between the August and the Schlage, which one do you choose?

      Schlage on the front door definitely for the keypad. August is great for the other doors in the house but I still am not sold on the design.

    For remote access can I use Apple HomeKit on my Iphone if I have no HomePod at my house?

      Ali Mahboubi I think HomeKit requires either an Apple TV or iPad to serve as a hub.

    Thanks for the great review. Don't you feel insecure to have a touch-pad on the lock as people might spot your passcode or obtain the fingerprints from it?

      The entryway is blocked from view on both sides and if I stand directly in front of the lock there really is no way for anyone to see what I'm punching in. Plus, the keypad is really a backup if I don't have any other option. I typically use my Apple watch or iPhone to ask Siri to unlock the door for me. Thanks for watching!

    Please lower the volume on your intro and outro. Really annoying

      Not alone there, had to quickly cover with my thumb. Unreasonably loud!
