While at the ball Captain George Henry Osborne (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) attempts to hit on Becky. However, the ball is interrupted by an announcement that the enemy is approaching and they will march to battle in a few hours.

I have watched this Film several times. It is so glorious and mind challenging. Go back to the era this occured and feel it. Reece Witherspoon was brilliant in this role and showed her acting talent which had been hidden in so many more "light weight roles". Stop analising and simply enkoy thje drama.
