Tips for Using Large microSD Cards on SD2Vita with StorageMgr | 256 GB & Higher Setup!

- Many people who have followed my previous StorageMgr tutorial have had a few issues with larger microSD cards, so I made this specific video for a couple reasons. The first being to show that large cards do work, as demonstrated with a 400 GB microSD card in here! The second being to show and clarify a few setup steps that people might commonly skip or misconfigure.
This video assumes you have a Vita console set up with HENkaku or h-encore and have the basic understanding of how to transfer files as well as modify your config.txt file to load plugins through the taiHEN engine. Everything is shown in here, however for a full tutorial detailing this further check the links further down in this description!

i have 512GB on my PSP - and uh... yeah that ain't enough for the entire PSP's backlog, not even close lol.
i've recently faced an issue with my Vita though since i originally used a 128GB SD card i had laying around at the time for it and after installing many of the games i wanted on it i quickly ran out of storage, so then i realised there is no point in getting a 256GB SD card and migrate everything to it because i'm probably going to face the same issue again, i think for the Vita 512GB is pretty much enough for all of the good games it has and a couple of PSP games and roms for emulators etc. maybe a couple of movies on it since even in 2020 it has a gorgeous display (i have a VITA 1000 mind you)
@@zee-ek8ym 1tb is overkill for the vita, with the 512gb sd card i got installed on mine right now i have only about 350gb used only for vita games, and i have about 170 vita games installed.
1tb sd cards pricing also make no sense at all, it is significantly cheaper purchasing two 512gb micro sd cards instead of a single 1tb microsd card.

One thing that needs to be mentioned is that if you go 256gb and above you'll probably run into issues with the limited spaces for game icons. This can be resolved by creating folders to organize your games but eventually, you'll run into an issue where the Vita doesn't have enough ram (I guess) to correctly display all the icons even if they are in folders. You just get white circles a few other related glitches. You can ignore this but, it looks really ugly.
If you want 256gb+ worth of games on your vita without making your menu look butt ugly, remove the bubbles for games (PSX, PSP) that you rarely play but, leave the games on your memory card. Add and remove bubbles depending on what you're currently playing. I have 109 Icons in folders and 54 icons not in folders. The upper limit where icons start going white is slightly above that.
Update: I recently upgraded to a 400gb sd card and ended up deleting all of my Adrenaline (PSP, PSX) icons from my main menu. I use the Adrenaline menu + hb sorter for those now. It's not as convenient or intuitive but, it's a step I had to take. If you use you Vita menu pages just for Vita games, it is really hard to hit those limits. However, Adrenaline also has limitations to how many games it can display. On the bright side, by the time you reach that bottleneck you're probably downloading more games than you'll ever play.

@@M_CFV The icon issue has nothing to do with the cpu. When you run out of icon space on the main menu, you start putting your games in folders. Folders can only hold 10 games icons.
You'll run out of ram before fill up 10 pages of 10 folders of hold 10 games. The issue is more akin to loading too many tabs on your internet browser.

@@pastelmacaroonThe reason PSP/PSX games cause ram issues is because they are so small and there are so many of them. You could potentially fit thousands on a 512gb card. That's a lot of bubbles.
Vita games are larger and there are fewer of them. I downloaded every Vita game I was even slightly interested in and when I organized them into folders it barely took 2 pages.
You're gonna need PSP/PSX games to fill up a 512gb card (not a bad thing) and if you use the adrenaline menu (instead of bubbles) to start just those games, you'll be fine. There's an app (homebrew sorter) you can get to organize your adrenaline games list otherwise they'll appear in the order they're installed (basically random). I think you just drop the hb sorter in your games folder because it appears on your games list. When you have 100+ psp games, it sucks finding a specific one when they're not sorted.

Neat. I just put a 1TB microSD card into my SD2VITA (as ux0) and another 1TB microSD into the psvd slot (as uma0) (using a 1000 model). YAMT makes this so easy and just wanted to drop a note here to say that its totally possible at 1TB sizes and works great.

@@MrMario2011 followup is that after you hit more than ~120 bubbles with this setup my vita crashes lol. So while you can insert a 1TB microSD card, you can't really use all of it successfully without hacking the app.db to clear out the bubbles and launch things via vita-launcher or some other 3rd party method like hexflow.
Got about ~230GB on the SD2Vita and the liveview area will crash after about 30 seconds if you leave it there idling. Assuming that it is running out of RAM or something like that.
No wonder Sony originally set the limit as 100 apps/bubbles.

@@ll3yWanTeD you don't. you use an alternate launcher like RetroFlow Launcher to display the games beyond 120 bubbles
also need to not use YAMT lol. StorageMgr works better with 1TB cards.

I'm using a 512GB Samsung Evo MicroSDXC with my Vita and I love it! Been using my modded Vita since the day Enso first came out. Originally had 3.60 Enso and now I'm on 3.65 Enso. I also use YAMT instead of StorageMgr because it boots faster.
@@JK-or3nu actually with the Vita 512GB is pretty reasonable, i filled up a 128GB (119GB) MicroSD card so fast for such few games, even 256GB (230GB) which sounds like a lot isn't really that much so 400-512GB are very reasonable with the Vita.
consider that most games weigh around 2.5-3GB and that adds up really quickly.
and then you're also probably going to put some PSP games on it because why not.
anyway my point is - there is no such thing as "too much space" lol

This did not work for me. It shows that I have 60GB of storage instead of having 256GB of storage on my ux0 folder. What did I do wrong?
Wish there was a utility that let you create pointers to things stored on other storage devices so people could use their aftermarket storage and Vita native storage at the same time.
I cant get my sd2vita to upgrade to 128sd card from a 64gb I used vitashell as I did when I went from 32gb to 64gb but the 128 keeps giving me corrupt files can anyone help
Dont take ur sd card out at all use vitashell for usb or ftp transfers

Should work just fine if imaged properly, formatted properly, and then copy all files from the old SD to the new SD.

@@baokubu8330I did it, step 1.first formated the card, 2. That image "thing"(Just follow the steps in a video about it) and then I was able to copy everything over.

Got my 2000 set up with HENkaku/Enso via a 3.733.60 downgrade with your other recent video, and now got a 512GB microSD card set up and in an SD2Vita thanks to this video, not to mention your other recent video on modding your Vita from 3.73. I just have 2 questions, if you or any of your viewers can answer: 1) Since I didn't remove the MCD line, is there anything to be aware of when inserting/using a regular Vita memory card? I have a 16GB that I had acquired just for this Vita... 2) Can I use/transfer my existing game save data that I already have saved on my PC from my main Vita (saved with Content Manager/QCMA)?
I have followed this to a T and can't for the life of me figure out where I'm going wrong. My Vita simply won't recognize the sd2vita, the light won't even flash.
I have the same problem. I think it might be a problem with the Vita adapter or the SD itself. I have a 256GB card too.

WTF I didn't use that blankzz I just forwarded my SD card to exFAT then copied all my files from my previous SD card worked flawlessly on my 3.67 VITA.

After 1 whole year investment on trying to revive this 400GB micro SD card, I am officially done trying and just going to send it in for the warranty. I hope they will cover it. Literally can't stress how many hours and methods i've used towards this corrupt card
Basically, I had a moment during Vitashell where it froze for an hour and rather than hard reset it, which isn't exactly safe either but a whole lot better than PULLING IT OUT OF THE SD2VITA WHILE FROZEN LIKE MY DUMBASS DID!

So I got the exact same sd2vita as in the thumbnail. I added a few files to the sd on my pc and then stuck it back into my vita and turned it back on. Well now nothing shows up. Literally all I did was delete Minecraft on my home screen and turned it off, then took the sd out and put it my pc and readded Minecraft to the mai folder like I’ve done a million times(it got corrupted some how not sure). But nothing shows up that’s on my SD not even Netflix. This particular card came off amazon and is only hardly a week old.

Actually, I wonder if I can use both storages at once. For example, use my 256GB SDtoVita for Vita, PSP and PS1 games and my 32GB Vita memory card for Retroarch roms.
Yes, you can use both cards. I installed adrenaline on my 32 gb vita memory card and everything else is on my 128gb sd card.
I don't remember the exact steps, but in vita shell you can switch (I think by pressing select), what your pc will read (either the sd card or the vita memory card).
Your vita can access both cards at the same time, but you have to "tell" your pc which card will be accessed, before you plug it in and install your games.

Hm. I needed this specific guide for a few months, but I still seem to be unable to upgrade the memory card size. I have a 128GB Sandisk card, that I just want to swap over with the current 16GB one thats in the vita and working. What I don't understand is why it will not work. I formatted with zzBlank and just copied everything over from the 16GB to the 128GB. I want to keep all the settings otherwise, just increasing the size and still nothing. Sigh. Any help?
Not sure if there's anything else manipulating your files, but it should be pretty straightforward. Format with zzBlank, format to exFAT, turn off Vita, copy all files from 16 GB to 128 GB, pop new card into Vita and turn on. Might also be worth testing with another card?
@@MrMario2011 That's exactly what I've done. I will have to order another one since I don't seem to have any laying about. Can't understand what the issue could be. I might try and put the 128GB into my Switch, just out of interest and see how it reacts to it. I'm wondering if the whole speed/class stuff could be affecting it; not gonna lie, I haven't kept up to date with SD card speeds etc.

@@MrMario2011 Sorry to fill up your inbox, but I thought it'd be best to share the solution I managed to get to.
So. I swapped the new SD card into the SD2VITA. When I did that, all of my stuff disappeared, which was ok. But I had no moleculeshell or vitashell. So I redid the henkaku.xyz thing and made sure to hit R1 at the prompt so that moleculeshell installs again. This was now installing to the proprietary Vita memory card. That's ok. I made sure that the new 128GB SD card in the SD2VITA was formatted correctly and preflashed with zzBlank. Once I did that, I just got autoplugin, then went to vita plugins, then SD2VITA Plugin, started that* and then made sure my SD2VITA was set as my livearena (the application tells you this as you switch through the options). Once I did that, the vita reset and boom. It worked.
*- I put this asterisk there because I did manage to have the SD2VITA pop up for one of the reboots. Now, I've no idea why it worked and why it worked for one single boot, but this let me install Enso and Moleculeshell on the SD2VITA, which meant that autoplugin could actually perform the SD2VITA mount, as it pops up with a warning saying it requires for there to be apps on the SD2VITA which is bizarre.
After all of this, SD2VITA was permanently mounted and now shows me 118GB available and doesn't disappear if I reboot.
I did this but now all my apps are gone and i cant get to vita shell to fix things. I think my files were hidden even tho it was checked. Any tips?

i was thinking of buying a vita and i was thinking of getting a SanDisk 512GB Extreme PRO 512gb and i wanted to ask if this type of card would be suported by the vita if formated correctly. hate having to return items for no reason and i dont want to drop about 100usd if it doesnt work. i have done research but i cant find anything but sandisk works great, no specifications of which type of sandisk. most keep talking about the ultra so is that the type of sandisk i should go for?
once again this may be an idiodic question and i myself have to figure out how to get the sd card formated correctly with only a chromebook dual booted with linux . . . this will be fun huh x)

I have a 'vita 1000 with a 128gb sd card and adapter all guides are saying you need storage to hack but when I watch a storage tutorial like yours it says you need the hack for storage wtf?! Whats the right order to do this or can someone point me in the right direction?

I just upgraded my 128GB to 400GB. Here's my question... How do I fix my 128GB so it can be used as a normal SD card? The partition that we build on these seems to be locked so they can't be deleted and rebuilt. I can choose to format it but all that does is throw errors at me. Help please.
you need to reformat it using Win32 format tool and the original zz image file

After some times i have trouble with the filesystem on my 200gb sd-card. This can´t repaired by windows chkdsk /f command. Errorcode: "766f6c756f652e63 470". is there a filesystem repair-solution on vita to fix this?

You need to try the samsung 256gb evo pro plus models those don't work at all. old sumsung 32gb works.
Why put the 64 kilobyte when format memory card? i have 128gb but it shows 119gb is that what need to put in order to get more space?.
That's how formatting works, you won't get that 9 GB.
i have literally did the micro sd card steps 10 times on 3 different pc's. So i press write on win32 to install the zzblank image to the micro sd, then unplug/plug back in, then i format like the first step and it still has no file on the micro sd card. All videos i watch they all have a folder called system volume information installed on there. I have done the steps over and over and still no folder gets installed on the micro sd card!

So I have a problem. I follow all your instructions to the letter and upon rebooting my ps tv. I basically loose access to vita shell and it no longer detects my built in internal storage, which i have to then do a full reset and reinstall everything from the beginning. The storage im trying to use is a 1TB SSD. Everything is fine until i delete the two line in which you said isnt needed. But the storage also isnt detected at that point either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've tried everything in the video but when I put the sd2vita card in all of the homebrew stuff ( enzo, vitashell ect) is missing. any ideas??
Bro big problems . My vita is no longer showing up on my pc ..i get the audible noise when i plug it in but thats it . Also no connection ftp .. so i tried by rebuilding database in recovery ... now all my apps have dissapeared and content manager says i have no apps on my sdcard .. enso logo still shows and i still have henkaku in my settings .

afaik allocation size is just the minimum size a file will take on a filesystem
Bigger allocation sizes are known to consume too much storage on the Vita for the exact reason you mentioned. Most games/apps are made up of many small files.
I just got the same sd card shown in this video, and when I try to write the zzBlank file with Win32DiskImager onto the sd card I get Lock Error - 1.0 "An error occurred when attempting to lock the volume. Try running as Administrator, also make sure the adapter you might be using isn't locked.

I had a hell of a job setting up my 256 GB card and when I finished it worked but when I tried copying files it would come up errors when copying large amounts. Also it would lose files if a transfer failed. I mean the way I was doing it. I have a feeling it was because it asked me to use exfat.
How does your guide work in that sense,have you had any problems?

i dont think i edited the conifg correctly and my vita doesnt read my sd2vita or game cartridges. is ther any way to totally reset this. after reformatting and restoring the vita its still not working?

Don't touch much in the ux0 folder. Except delete the /tai folder in the ux0 folder. All those extra folders he had were just from extra applications etc.
Im locked out of vita shell. I accidently left on the sd2psvita setting when i disconnected from vita shell. Now it says an error has occurred. How can i fix this problem?

I have done everything to the letter and looked online to no avail. My 400gb micro sd card is not getting recognized. I have the plug in installed, both config files are correct and have deleted the uxo tai folder. Do you think maybe I have a faulty micro sd or sd2vita adapter?

Okay I really appreciate it do you know how DaVita taking too much storage from the SD card for example when I transfer my 256 card to the .1.5TB it says I have 532GB to USE and say I used 885GB I only transferred 115 gigs to the card

Ok I'm lost... I already had enso, retro arch, adrenaline etc... I tried to do these tutorials and whenever i load my sd2vita.. all of my stuff is gone, but it still loads up with the enso splash logo... it's still jailbroken but it's like the sdvita is overwriting my sony memory card which has all my apps on it..... i've transferred everything over to my blank SD card but still nothing..... HELP PLEASE
There are quite a few possibilities for why it doesn't work.
Have you tried to follow the documentation for StorageMgr (github.com/CelesteBlue-dev/PSVita-StorageMgr/blob/master/README.md) instead of following this video? This is important because it contains information that this video doesn't cover.

@dark naxs Update: my micro SD card Sandisk Ultra 128 GB is a fake one; i check it with the software H2TW and have only 29,2 GB real. Now i know Sandisk maybe is not the problem, the real problem was fake cards. Now i bought a Transcend 128 GB card and everything is okn.
