@@Joe_Friday I'm a 1st year reservist. To be honest, I don't think the north is an issue anymore barring nukes and civilian damage if war breaks out. Problem is neighbors like China, and the fact that the bar of entry to enter active-duty service is getting lower because of the population problem.
Like in the 1980s, only about 30% of all males were conscripted to active-duty, meaning infantry was made up solely of the toughest, most athletic and sharpest dudes.
The rest would be conscripted and do desk-jobs or civil service instead.
An example of this is that until 1990 it was pretty much impossible for you to be in infantry if you even wore glasses.
When I got out of service in 2020, they lowered the entry bar because they couldn't fill the TOs anymore... So more and more guys who just aren't physically and mentally together are getting put into combat roles.
To be frank, I wouldn't trust some of these new conscripts with a pair of scissors, let alone war equipment...

I was a M60 assist gunner early in 2000. carrying extra barrel and accessory bag. the case was already rare as most of front line units recieved K3 as squad automatic weapon. only 2nd line units and armor units had M60s.
My unit transfered from 4 squad structure to 3 squad structure just before my conscription, so they had old legacy of Weapon squad and weapon platoon.
so the machine gun training was based on 3 people, gunner/assist gunner/ammo man.
we also had tripods for M60s, but no one assigned and no training for it.
my brigade was merged with the nearby ID who uses K3s, so I think the warthogs were moathballed.

The need for an assistant gunner on light-machine guns depends partially on the LMG itself. For example, you fire 600 rounds with an MG3 and you wont see anything after that. Because the heat rising from the barrel will obscure your sights. Therefor it becomes easier to be guided by someone next to the weapon. Then you have the aspect of optics. Weapon optics are costly, regular binoculars are less so, but often also have higher magnification and it therefor makes sense to have a secondary guy only use them and guide the fire.
    -
You swap the MG3 to a SAW however and add an acog or similar optics on it and you dont need that, but then again you have less impact at range.

@@Lobos222 I'm not saying shooting 600 rounds in a firefight is a lot. I'm saying shooting 600 rounds that rapidly from a LMG is a lot and that means you're in real bad situation. Guess, it depends on doctrine. When I was a rifleman in Afghanistan, our squad tactics involved our SAW gunner firing a string of bursts and then maneuvering along with the rest of the squad. They didn't have optics and their barrel never got hot enough for it to be a problem, even in really intense engagements. But yes, I can see how a GPMG like the MG3 would have that problem, especially since the Germans love to use their machine guns as a base of fire in which the squad maneuvers around, not with.

First, Thanks for the great Vid!
Army conscription has escalated more and more into a social issue nowadays in Korea. I myself has finished my conscription duties, and here's what I know so far.
Now, the army conscription ratio of Korea is surpassed 90%, which is even more than the conscription rate of Japan in WW2.
The quantity and quality of army food has decreased(or is the same) inspite of the Ministry of Defense's 'efforts' for improvement.
South Korean men are conscripted into the army regardless of serious physical/mental condition, and they receive approximately 400$ a month with poor living standards.
Even more, the men are not served with proper treatment or compensation if a serious injury occurs during their service.
When a private lost his foot by a north korean landmine in 2017, he did not receive proper compentation - but an ankle-shaped statue, which obviously does not make up for his loss.
These phenomenons made young korean men depict army conscription as 'not worth the effort', 'avoid if you can', or even '21th century slave labor'.
A sense of deprivation has naturally into Korean men in their 20~30s because of these issues.
The Korean government has not made any notable efforts to compensate their 18 month long service, while their women counterparts get jobs and go into society far earlier.
This combined with the ever increasing army conscription ratio has made these generations despise the ROK military even more,
which is depicted in the saying 'When the army calls, you're their son. If you get out of the army with injuries, you're not their son anymore.'
The decrease of army personnel due to low fertility rates is showing its impact even in this moment, but I personally think there is no hope of improvement for the next 3~5 years.
Living conditions for young citizens have deteriorated in the past few years and fertility rates have remained a record low for the past 5 years.
Revising the Rifle squad personnel can be a temporary solution, but a complete overhaul of Korea's army conscription system is the one and ultimate solution.

How ever conveniently limiting the ammunition per squad to what 1 person can carry is cheaper.
Each belt weighs 2.5kg. On an soldier carrying 15kg of essential gear and armour. The max a gunner can carry in sustained combat is 800 rounds (20kg).
No one is running more then half a kilometre with 35kg. With a section of 10 at 15m spacing. If that gunner is tail end charlie. He’s running 150 meters every time they come under contract.
At 1 round per second in combat.
You’re only talking about a firepower potential of 13 minutes per squad.
Compared to regular doctrine of every man in a section carries 1 belt. Your sustained firepower can go from 13 minutes to 30 minutes. I which can be life or death against an overwhelming force. It’s lucky these ninjas are trained in hand to hand combat.

I'm not very optimistic about the future tbh. I feel despondent at times because of the "writing on the wall" as westerners say.

Korean army Infantry tactics are based on heavy firesupport from artillery or mortar.
So rifle squad don't need to big
Instead, they place a lot of companies which can easily cover and hold wide area. And much of operation territories are mountain area so they don't need a big squad instead they cover wide area with enough rifle squad and firesupport companies.
Furthermore most of Frontline divisions are completely deployed but non-front line divisions are basically territory control like state defense forces so those divs don't need to be heavily and completely armed so most of non-frontline divs has a lot of reserve forces deployment and most of them are reserve forces that don't need to be a heavily armed with newest weapons. Cuz main object is civilian and territory control. so non Frontline state defense division has more smaller firesquad then front divs. they're armed with 2nd line arms & gears which you said like basic k2s and even m16a1s.

I was in infantry officer basic course with a S. Korean lieutenant. He was awesome. Great attitude, humble, hard working, fucking awesome guy. If they're cutting down the size of the army and restructuring the squads, they're good as long as they don't let standards slip. Also, I think the standing army of the relatively smaller country is MASSIVE compared to the standing army of the United States. I think there's like 1 million service members across all military branches, but something like half of that is U.S. Army (the largest branch). That's out of 300 million people. So for S. Korea to have 350k standing army is crazy. No wonder people are up in arms about conscription. BUT I also went to basic training with 2 S. Korean privates who signed onto the U.S. Army because they said bonuses were better, and they had gotten a deal where they could serve in Korea. So I know there's a lot of that going on.

Believe it or not, korean people and the press recognizes the korean military very negatively due to their brutal acts against soldiers in mandatory service, or their policy direction to a meaningless promotion. The video shows K2C1 as a standard issue rifle, but more than 95% of korean soldiers are still using a 30 year old K2 rifle. When I was in service, I was supplied with a canteen which was manufactured in 1968(not joking). The korean army is not interested in advancing their combat abilities. They are just focusing on promoting their military for additional funding from it's government.

I'm a reserve officer who served as platoon leader for two years. I used to work in the front line, my platoon was always short of the number stipulated in ROKarmy tactics, and I always had to worry about the number of guards. What surprised me after I was discharged from the army was the situation in the rear. There were only two to four men in a squad, and most of the troops were reservists. Many Korean men are overconfident in the capabilities of the Korean reserve forces, but frankly I don't believe in them. Even I, who became an officer because I wanted to be a soldier, have become much more dull now, and I think they are probably in a more serious condition than me. In fact, when I went to reserve training, most of them forgot their combat skills, and some of them got fat and couldn't wear combat uniforms.
Fortunately, the situation in the North Korean military is worse than ours and I don't think we'll lose, but I'm still worried about this. Even you, who were not Korean soldiers, seem to know about this, so I'm more worried.

@@mrd7067 All officers of the Korean military will belong to the reserve forces after being discharged from the military. And they have to participate in training for about three days a year until their sixth year of discharge. Usually, they have different jobs at this age, and even if they take a day off because of this training, their co-workers seem to understand. The training that reserve officers receive depends on the unit they were assigned to. And usually, they are tasked with educating or leading reserve forces. We only receive training until the sixth year, but we don't quit the reserve forces mission. Since the number of reserve officers is not so many, each class will be assigned to the reserve forces up to a set age. For example, I will be promoted to reserve captain next year, and I will be in the reserve forces until the age of 43. My English is not good, so I couldn't fully grasp your question. I meant more how are officers recruted ?
From among the enlisted or directly from the street and trained seperatly ?
How long is their military training as well as time active in a leadership position ?
You pretty much answered what they do when in the reserve and how long.
From what i understand the ROK military follows the US training model.
I thought your reserve might follow the US model too (one weekend a month and 2-4 weeks a year training time).
It might be the optimum for 12 years "active reserve" (or Reserve I) after the active duty time.
3 days a year would you only give time for the most basic qualifications in the german military, if even that (just enough time for refresher training in first aid, NBC [nuclear, biological, chemical] training and a trip to the shooting range).
      Thanks for your time.

    • @KsS416
      @KsS416 3 года назад

@@mrd7067 The method of recruiting officers is similar to that of the United States. You can graduate from a military academy, take ROTC or OCS courses at a general university, or apply for an officer course while working as a private. Usually, they serve as active military officers for as short as two years or more, and if they are discharged from the military, they automatically become reserve officers. What happens after that is the same as the previous comment I posted.
Since they have already received at least six months of training described by you in the course of military schools or ROTC, three days of training per year after becoming a reserve force is sufficient. Because it's not their first time learning this.
Perhaps if what I understand is correct, you mistook the reserve officer for being trained on the street like the game 'The Division' agents. Not only officers but also all reserve forces must serve in the military for at least two years. Reserve forces are automatically deployed after they are discharged from the military, and they are not soldiers, but ordinary civilians, so they have to focus on their work. That's why they only receive training for such a short period of time. I hope my answer is what you wanted.

(Army, Air Force, Marine, Navy, Special Forces, whatever) We are conscripted, so most men served in the military, and the number of reserve forces is huge because they are all reserve forces. But what I'm worried about is that their expertise seems to be inferior to the U.S. military, and the number of soldiers is decreasing recently as the population decreases, and we still have an enemy called North Korea.

Culture and conscription seem to lead to less delegation and more centralization in South Korean military units, so I’m not surprised that they don’t split into fire teams. I think he said the MG troop carries his own ammunition, but unless he’s woefully under supplied, that’s not likely. The boxes will be spread around the squad.
If Putin cannot get his forces to properly use the old Soviet tactics, it would be interesting to see if the Kim’s could do so. Hopefully, we won’t find out in either case.

Don't know how anyone could come to the conclusion that declining birthrates are due to inequality in the workplace, I mean, I'm from a country that have a pretty flat structure, where it's pretty normal to go get a friendly beer with your boss outside work and I'm all for it, however when looking throughout history, when women were practically only allowed to be secretaries and nurses this problem didn't exist, so it's likely something else, cost of living is a decent alternative, I would also argue having kids have been put down in priorities of what is taught to kids is important, you don't tell them to have a family, you tell them to get an education so they can get a career and then profit and freedom and green pastures.

      @obiwankenobi4252 3 года назад +11

I’d argue that the issue of women being paid less (mostly due to them taking lower-paying jobs) wasn’t nearly as much of an issue in the past, when the cost of living was low enough that a single working person could easily support a family of five. But with higher costs of living, it now takes two wages to live decently, and women earning less is a more pronounced issue.

There’s also the fact that birth rates consistently go down as living standards increase pretty much everywhere.

@@obiwankenobi4252 Among rich families who can afford only having one person work, they tend to only have 1-2 children. Neither does the wagegap (even taking the most extreme examples) make a big difference. It would at best be like if one of the parties involved got a promotion. It wouldn't fix it. People in poor countries also tend to have a lot of children and in fact poor people in general do as well. It largely seems to be an issue of what society have deemed important. We see a similar problem in some countries such as mine with regards to nobody wanting to get a job such as carpentry or bricklayers since it's believed that is for stupid people and they need to get a long education. It's a self made problem.

    • @obiwankenobi4252
      @obiwankenobi4252 3 года назад +2

@@six2make4 I mean, yeah it’s a self-made problem, but one which is strictly linked with a nation’s level of development. Higher cost to raise a family means that people raise smaller families, hence fewer kids.

@@obiwankenobi4252 Yea, but higher living cost also typically mean higher wages. But the problem is that people fresh out of school are less likely to start a family because they can't afford to... YET. How this affects birth rate, well not quite sure there's research on this aspect. But presumably families just start later rather than not at all, but that's just speculation.

Well at least they have an army. The Bundeswehr here in germany is joke compared to the korean army. It is called the "worst army of europe". Planes are not flying, rifles are not shooting. And we do not have spare parts for our outdated tanks. Yes we have the Leopard 2 A5, but the german government likes to sell them to other countries while buying old Leopards from the Nethrelands in return.
Fertility rates are at 0,3%. I know the south korean fertility rate is even lower. But if war would break out tomorrow, germany would be overruned within two weeks. In south korea the living costs are rising and people can barely sustain a familiy. It is the same in germany. In Japan nearly every second young man is virgin now. Germany is going the same way as japan.
As a man you can not sustain a family so no woman has interest in you. A man in the 50s could pay for his 7 children and his wife on his own. He had a house and a car. Today you are lucky when you can pay your rent as a man even without a house or a car. Family and children are not even an option with such low wages in germany.
And a lot of young men are ignored completely by young women in germany, because they do not earn enough. So yeah, defenetly no new young men for the army.

As a Korean, I would say that it is your luck to have a geopolitical position that does not need such a strong military.. Germany is surrounded by many friendly neighbors bound to the EU system and Russia is faraway from Berlin by now. If Russia attacks you, Poland, France, Italy, Spain, and many other European allies will not hesitate to help Germany. And I can't find any serious threat except for Russia that can militaristically invade Germany now. So, in my opinion, there's no reason for Germany to waste money to the military.
In South Korea, the situation is the opposite. We are surrounded by unreliable, if not hostile, countries. North Korea is our primary enemy with nukes in its hands, China wants to grab the entire Korean peninsula into its sphere of influence, and even Japan has not-so-good relationship with us in recent days. Every single country in the Asia-pacific region is annually increasing defense budget with a notable rate. If I were you, I would rather choose to have a weak military in a safe geopolitics than to have a strong military but being surrounded by bigger and hostile neighbors.

So, many people are fighting each other about gender issue... I hope ASAP the regime changes. The presidential election of the Republic of Korea will take place next year. Plus I've a feeling it would solve another problem, less number of women would put plastic inside them or fight on behalf of BTS on twitter.

conscription, no matter the country is always unpopular, during war-times it's often somewhat accepted as a necessity for the army to bolster their numbers, but during peacetime acceptance falls gradually, both on the politics and on the civilian sides until it is so low that it gets gradually reduced until the addition of conscripts become dubious value to the army
