• Consultation with 3 recent and current serving US Army Rangers
This is a segment from a longer video about the complete 80 Year Evolution of the US Army Ranger Squad, and more in-depth discussion about their changing role and the overall structure of the Ranger Battalions:
ruclips.net/video/y21cJct1Koo/видео.html
I decided to release this segment remastered with some new animations because while the modern time period is the most popular on my channel, only about 20% of viewers on the original video actually got to the modern part (probably because of its length and all the earlier time periods at the beginning).

@@user-kc6qr5eo1k bro's crazy, how can a chess piece be gay ?
Ah ok. I thought it seemed like a reupload
Rangers are the most lethal and scalable direct action unit in the US military. Rangers are unique because they can conduct a special operations HVT raid with a platoon or less, clear a small town/valley with a company, seize an international airport with a battalion, and use the entire Regiment for large scale combat operations. During the GWOT, Rangers kill or captured more HVTs than any other unit including ST6 and Delta. A Ranger company held off Saddam’s Republican Guard at Haditha Dam which resulted in 400 EKIA and 30 tanks destroyed. In comparison to other SOF units, SEAL platoons and SF ODAs simply don’t have enough fire power to do most of the direct action stuff that Rangers do.
75th Bn. has three times as many pipe hitters as CAG and ST6 combined. They were also continuosly deployed for twenty years straight. Last but not least, they conducted raids on their own, with partner forces and other SOCOM/JSOC teams. It's only natural they have the highest tally on enemy combatants killed in the entire USSOCOM. That and the fact that their success rate is one of if not the highest in the entire US military. Let's not forget that even during Gothic Serpent they completed their mission and extracted the HVTs.
I did 3 year long deployments with 2nd Bat during GWOT in 4 years, we were very busy during that time and I got out during the beginning of the surge in 08. Then I went on to become a contractor
lol. They are only the most lethal to each other. And no. They are not the most lethal DA. Which if you knew anything DA is not the term used since about 2017. But I digress, 75th is a bunch of kids that did 19days of PT. They are the kings of fratricide and failure.
I've never seen any AOB, SOTF, CJSOTF, or SOJTF tally kills. 100% Rangers are legit, but plenty of dudes out there putting them down.
I've also seen 75th guys sitting in hangers waiting for QRF call while everyone else in the streets.
@@tigercub2468 I never said the 75th themselves tallied kills. But when GWOT started goong South, particularly in Afghanistan, all combat troops were ordered to report enemy casualties as the old Vietnam War mentality of "We're killing a lot of them=we're winning" started to be used to continue the war. Truth is, they conducted more raids than everyone else, hence they got more insurgents than everyone else.
How do those platoons carry enough ammunition for nine belt fed guns and a Carl Gustav? Even at full strength that’s a lot of weight to haul.
Light Infantry carries everything on their backs.
Same way a normal rifle platoon does, distribution
There's nothing "Light" about Light Infantry. I bet each soldier carry more than the one in mech infantry.
We shared the load , it was pretty crappy in the mountains of Afghanistan. 2/75 01-04
I personally carried 15 30rd mags plus one in the rifle and 3 mags for the crappy pistol , that was the minimum I would carry
Unpopular E1s, I'd imagine.
Rangers also use a third sidearm: Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS3 w/ DPP, Dawson Irons and KKM barrel and comp. You actually have a pic of one @ 6:01
You can thank CAG for that. I don’t think there’s an official designation for that setup, but it’s outside of normal SOCOM issue due to the Department of the Army denying the issuing a full size pistol other than the M9/M17.
Jeff Gurwitch of Modern Tactical Shooting discusses some of the issues and politics around the Glock 17 in SOCOM. If I had to guess, those were Battalion purchased outside of the procurement stage.
Constant Recoil should be used more. KAC LAMG looks like a great gun.
yep
Couldve been the ultimax if they actually improved it instead of sitting on their asses and waiting for new constant recoil guns to hit the market
@@thetigerii9506Ultimax is drum or mag-fed, not belt-fed, so harder to carry rounds for it. Great for short duration mission profiles if you can hump the drums and have compatibility with AR mags.
@@LRRPFco52 they finally made the newest one belt feedable, but it is a bit heavier than the old versions, which somewhat defeats the purpose of being a lightweight lmg
@@thetigerii9506 I've been following the Ultimax100 for over 30 years. Which model are you referring to?
In practice, they put a lot of weight on red dots versus magnified optics, which tells me a passive aiming backup is a big part of their doctrine in the event active aiming is non-permissible.
On the other hand, the Marine Corps Infantry has bet all chips on the VCOG for improved reconnaissance and observation, or suppression by accuracy when employed as by the auto gunner.
Two perfect examples of "mission dictates."
Rangers also dedicate a lot of effort to door-kicking and other direct action ops, in close quarters like that the speed advantage of a red dot/eotech over an LPVO is definitely a factor.
@@robbell3217 exactly
There are plenty of dudes with magnified optics to handle distance and overwatch, while assaulters take down an objective.
Ranger Regiment has been ahead of the power curve in this respect since the early 1990s.
Lol you can piggy back an RMR or T2 on a vortex Razor or any scope for that matter. So you don't necessarily have to just stick with a T2 on a unit mount for an EOTech on a riser.
The image for the MK48 is a MK48 Mod 0, Rangers and SOCOM use the Mod 1 now which was present in your Ranger Squad Short.
NSW and 75th have actually just upgraded their Mk48 Mod 1s to Mod 1 mk3 standard, as of 2023. They got the FN Mk3 furniture now.
I’m loving that battle order is using the lingo, it always cracked me up when I’d go to the PX or somewhere civilians worked and they threw words like, tracking, good to go, squared away
I don't think rangers get enough love.
I agree 💯
Because they are a bunch of infantry privates with shiny gear and no common sense.

no worries wall building video dropping next week
I have both an 11.5" and a 12.5" and I prefer the 12.5" patrol gas length which is where the gas port is between the carbine length and the intermediate length.
Love that you’re remastering.
Do American mechanized next!! Add a present state and future state instead of ending at 90s
Cool information you brought up about Army Rangers and their Guns.
Wish for Green Beret videos soon!
I remember when all of this would be considered an Opsec violation and they made use delete all of our photos. Then I see picture of me at 9:34. Strange times.
is that really you?
When was that 07-08 timeframe? Good times!! I had to go buy an iPod shuffle for deployments cuz my ipod had a camera

Can Battle Order do the Light Infantry Divisions from the 80's till now. The 10th Mountain I think is the last active duty light division left. Outstanding job on all videos!
A good friend of mine was a 1LT in the Army and didn't carry a sidearm because it was one more thing to worry about and more weight.
Less likely he was infantry then. Officers are typically issued sidearms as they are required to qualify with them. Again, infantry typically.
Job determins if you carry pistol or not
I'm so happy about the fact, that our army has decided to replace our CG M3s with new M4s Such a flexible weapon.. often a battle winner in Afghanistan.
Every one of your videos are great. Would love to see a video on a WW2 B-17 Bombardment Group/Squadron.
Please do one of these but for SEAL Platoons
Big fan here. Great video and break down of weapons and the role of each soldier. Thanks
2:19 That part about all Infantry Officers de-facto having to go through makes Ranger School sounds kinda like the Indian Army's Commando Course. Soldier's that go through Commando Course in IA get to be in the Ghatak Platoon (shock troops of each Infantry Battalion). And while it is technically optional for Officers, de-facto all Infantry Officers have to go through it. Even some non-Infantry Officers from Combat Support Arms (signals, engineers, etc) also go through it.
Can you make a Video like this on the modern german army? For example about the Fallschirmjäger EGB (German Army Ranger).
Because they are RANGERS that’s why👍🏼🫡🪖🎖️🥇
I used to think Navy seals were top teir killers but now that iv done more research i think the Rangers are more efficient killers and their selection process is tighter and harder
Gus gunners also run scars and just fold the stalk so it’s more compact
no one runs scars

Have you done other loadout videos for other SOCOM units?
Thanks for the update. This weapon loadout looks like a lot of iron to haul around.
I must've misunderstood the title. I thought it was going to be about the overall gear a Ranger packs on himself for a mission. Bummer.
I’ve noticed that many operators are wearing Salomon Forces XA boots. However, some guys are still wearing normal army issue boots.
Didn’t the rangers start doing DA in the fall of 2003 or spring of 2004?
I love this! Please make one on similar US units. Like green berets
Guess that LAW tube isn't disposable with that PEQ on it LOL.
is there any more details on how the D Company is organized with it's subunits, callsigns and the like?
For anyone that doesn’t want to watch the entire video let me sum it up for you: if you’re a hostile foreign nation you REALLY do not want a bunch of Rangers running around behind your defensive lines. If they are, you’re about to have a bad day.
Can you do a marine force recon video?
Huh, I thought for sure Rangers would be one of the first units to switch to the M7/M250s like the 82nd( or 101'st ?) are...
If you dont carry a pistol might as well not be deployed. Thats what I will say.
Excellent breakdown and one of the most accurate 💯 👍
Are the Rangers better than the Marines?
Rangers are a sof unit under socom, marines are just regular infantry which specialies in amphibious insertion methods as regular infantry soldiers. So yeah a ranger is better than a regular marine
Interesting how they dont like the M110A1. I saw a pic going around recently of a ranger with a modernized Mk11 too.
They’re absolutely terrible.
@@PaulScunnion207 whats so hated about them? weight? accuracy?

For larping purposes - what kind of foregrip and lights are they using?

At 2:10 did you say ranger school is a suckfest? 😂
This is why Leon Edwards is a UFC champion!
Halligan tool. Invented by Chief Hugh Halligan of the FDNY.
Ironically Boston FD ended up adopting it on a large scale first. The FDNY didn't want to look like they where favoring the side ventures of a member.
Rangers will soon (if not now as of 5/'24) be issued SIG/SAUER M7 battle rifles in 6.8 x 51 and M250 machine guns in the same cartridge. The M7 is a "big brother" Ar the rifle with the same manual of arms plus a non-reciprocating left side charging handle and FINALLY a short stroke gas piston system.
The M7 has a VORTEX M157 sight SYSTEM (1 - 8 scope W/"Magic Box" of sensors and ballistic engine on top.) THE HIT PROBABILITY TO 500 METERS IS 80% FOR THE AVERAGE INFANTRYMAN!! This means less ammo need be carried on a typical mission.
As well the M240 will be replaced by the new SIG M250 in the same 6.8 x 51 cartridge as the M7. Can you say "OVERMATCH"?
That is false
Less carbine ammo needed? Well, then they can add more CG ammo
@3:45 I think he needs to just his hop up.
That's a UTM bolt... Universal Training Munition (bolt) Used for force on force training.
Can you make a video about Tier 1 units?
A lot of organizational info on them can be hard to find, or be conflicting.
@@aaroncook2052yeah plus, because of the nature of their missions, they can and do use a wide variety of gear depending on their mission

Guess STB ain't gonna get no love.
Should have 2recon units in squads so 2 Gunners 2 spotter 2snipers
Any info on the scar L/mk 16? Those still pop up in pics of rangers semi regularly
they are in the armory but only new guys get them when there are no M4s available
I'm sure most of the accuracy issues were due to the stupid SIG 1-6 optic
I'm in the Army as Infantryman and this is how I imagined Infantry to be but no its just some bullshit. Details, toxic leadership, rarely any good training. I'm doing my 3 years and I'm out. Obviously rangers are huge leap above Infantry but I expected more.
Does anyone know if those are AAC blackout flash hiders on the kac lmg?
You see in real modern conflict like in Ukraine a camera won't be filming you also you won't gonna be shooting like that putting your head up, drones buzz around everywhere and real fight is taken by artillery and logistics.
Extremely well trained "special forces" starts getting killed by shrapnels and medical condition, no food or water will crumble the moral , movie every 100m will seem like a mile.

Someone please tell me why they switched to M320s as compared to M203s. Ergonomically speaking it makes no sense. There are no good holsters for M320s. Accuracy is a hard sell because its a grenade launcher. Leaf sights worked, and a side-mount GLS makes night-vision usage of the system in conjunction with a LRF basically idiot proof and MORE effective at night. Side opening breech only makes sense when you have longer 40mm rounds you want to use (such as a pike missile), but we don't even have pike missiles, and the combined effect of ISR assets would be better utilized for indirect fire from mortars than laser designation and firing from a pike. I've used both and people still tell me reasons that make no sense why the M320 is a better weapons platform.
Lmao if you have ever shot both you would know that the 203 sucks
@@johnflank8135 I have though... and the M32... and the M240... plus the M4 and M27. Never fired a Carl G/AT4/M72/or Javelin, but got to hold them which was cool, would look through the CLU again tbh, or ride in the gun turret of a JLTV with a M41 Saber system (that I had no idea how to work lmao, but thankfully the sidemounted 240 was there.) Worst was carrying 8 60mm mortar in my main pack which was kinda heavy, in addition to the medbag that I had to carry. 3 years attached to a infantry battalion, but that isn't really a great view on my credibility, because everyone can have shitty opinions due to different experiences.
The argument isn't that the 203 is better to shoot than the 320. The 320 is cool if all you want to do is shoot 40mm grenades, but if you want to shoot a rifle in addition to grenades, it makes sense to have it be ergonomical and easy to transition between. The 203 does that, the 320 does not.
@Insanegorey you speak of ergonomics, but having a 203 rifle mounted negatively affects handling the weapon. The whole allure of the 320 is that it can be used standalone. (Yes there are standalone chassis for the 203, they suck) I have not once in my 6 years in Regiment ever thought that the transition from Rifle to 320 was slow or that it could ever benefit from being faster. It's stupid to encumber a rifleman, making him less effective for no good reason. To say that there are no good holsters for the 320 is not accurate. I would rather have a holstered 320 over anything underslung on my rifle, and so would anybody who has ever been a grenadier.
But hey, you have 3 years of what seems to be USMC experience, so you must be an SME on everything, right?
@@johnflank8135 I’m not a SME on everything, I’m just portraying what experience I had and how that feeds into what I believe. I was unimpressed with the retention systems we utilized, but it’s entirely possible that you had different equipment for retention. Most of the time the guys had a Velcro secured holster that was too tight and made transitions on the move difficult. Some guys would just buy braided bungee paracord and use that to retain it with a simple Velcro thigh strap that worked better, but that was NOT the normal at all.
Even still, I disagree, based on what I saw and experienced. I do have another unrelated question, did RR have a good whole blood program when you were in? I’m very fascinated with the usage of the RMHB in its training of 68W’s and personally think that should be the gold standard across the service for corpsman/medics.
So would a company Commander be a Major ?

maybe I missed it in the longer video, but when do the rangers go from being infantry to Special forces?
Except for the Vietnam era (when they weren’t really an infantry force per se) they were always basically a mix of infantry and special forces (light infantry structure/capabilities and special missions)
They’ve been special since Rogers’ Rangers.
Modern Rangers have been apart of SOCOM since the 70s.

NOT a good guide for civilian militias to load out because where's your DoD support system? Ahh see you have none.
Who asked?
Okay… I don’t think that was the point of this video
@TacticalTrainer223 It wasn't, but people have this tendency to go try to mimic high speed low drag types of units. But they forget that there is no medivac, no logistics trains, and no one and nothing to help them when shit goes sideways.
A fair percent of people watching this video are doing so specifically to get the general specification of a rager squad for prepping for any type of shtf scenario. You could call these militias, but it's more accurately just a small group of dudes who go to the range together.
