Because of the dog/horse bond, the Dalmatian easily adapted to the firehouse in the days of horse-drawn fire wagons. Since every firehouse had a set of fast horses to pull the pumper, it became common for each group of firefighters to keep a Dalmatian in the firehouse to guard the firehouse and horses.

The breed has also become predisposed to deafness in the intervening years which is actually helpful because the alarms and engine sirens don’t stress them

To elaborate on why the Dalmatian breed specifically, it's because Dalmatians were carriage dogs first and foremost. They were used to accompany and to guard the coach of English aristocracy well back in the 1700s.

I didn't see your comment before I commented. But your explanation is good about the dalmatians. My dad used to be friends with a fireman and he said a few things about the dogs. But I couldn't remember everything. It's been years ago when he talked about it. I was a little girl at the time.

The statues of the presidents in Rapid City are "clothed" in the winter w/ scarfs, hats and gloves/mittens for anyone who needs them. I'm not sure exactly how long this has been going on, but I do know it's been going on for a while :)

Also, those characters you were struggling with are from Raggedy Ann and Andy Musical Adventure (1977). If you haven't seen it, it's definitely worth your while. The animation is some of the most incredible traditional 2D animation put to film.

Fun thing is it's based on the poster, but the painter clearly hadn't seen the movie and was only working from a small image, so there's some creative misinterpretations of character designs-- eg turning the pirate's right sleeve into his nose, the king into a weird bug-eyed goon, Sir Leonard Looney into some kind of abstract robot

Regarding Dalmatians as fire dogs, the American Kennel Club (AKC) says:
"... the breed’s evolution to fire dog began as early as the mid-1700s. 'They were stable guards,' she says. 'They also ran with the carriages to guard whatever was in the carriage, whether it was passengers or goods.'...The Fire Department of New York City can take some credit in making the breed famous as fire dogs. Due to their expertise as carriage dogs, it was logical that Dalmatians would serve well running with fire carriages. FDNY began utilizing Dals as early as the 1870s. 'Back then, the fire equipment was horse-drawn,' says Steinmetz. 'The dogs came in as guards to clear the way in front of the horse. When the horses left, they stayed.'”

When I was young maybe 50 years ago, My parents took me to a place in PA called Story Book Forest, It was all the fairy Tales I grew up with connected by a path that went from story to story scenes with the little buildings and live character actors it was wonderful. Many Dalmatians are deaf, due to a genetic disorder, that is why they are friends of firemen The loud sirens do not hurt their ears or make them howl like other dogs. They also get along well with horses a good companion to the horses. This is what I was told many years ago.

@@DJVolte There was Enchanted Forest, The Land of Make-Believe and Story Town (which later expanded into The Great Escape). There were other themed kiddie parks too like Gaslight Village (Vaudeville theme) and Frontier Town (cowboy theme). What I find funny about the story book parks is that most of the theme would be based around fairy tales, nursery rhymes and children’s stories, but then sometimes there’d be one thing that’s from a book that’s not for kids. Like, the fiberglass whale at Great Escape is supposed to be Moby Dick. And Enchanted Forest has a Klondike section including “Dan McGrew’s Bar” based on the poem “The Shooting of Dan McGrew” by Robert W. Service.

Dalmatians are known as firehouse dogs because they were utilized to accompany fire carts and would reside in the firehouse. They were bred to run alongside horse-drawn carriages, serving as both protectors and companions. Dalmatians were favored for their loyalty, intelligence. They had a calming effect on horses, so while firefighters battled a blaze, the fire dog could stay with the horses and ease their stress.
