Thanks for posting Have a Great Day I have 1959 thur 1964 impalas and other classic cars i collect on my 1963 impala my driver side rear axle came off thank God it didn't miss up my quart panel
That’s awesome! The toughest part is taking the old one out and putting the new one back out because of its weight. If you can overcome the weight of it, and do it safely, you’ll be in good shape!
The ring gear has the numbers stamped on the edge... Ring teeth and pinion teeth. Divide the ring teeth number by the lower pinion number, that yields the ratio. Good idea to tape up the u-joint caps an soon as you can. Otherwise you will learn how many rollers are in there, as you go looking for them on the garage floor. Good idea to rub some gear lube (from each housing) on a finger, go out in the sunlight an see how much "metalflake" if any, is contaminating the assembly. Consider cleaning up the inside of the housing with lacquer thinner... Ideal time to check each axle bearing condition as long as you are in there. Check inside the u-joint caps and see if they are good, if they need some grease, or ( ouch) if they are dry, red and powdery = time bomb. A 9/16 nut is really a 3/8" nut which generally uses a 9/16" wrench... Liked your video, great informative how-to get it done! Thanks.
It's my cruiser. Sits low 18s and 20s and the original 6 with a 5 speed. Might be a couple of shots of it in my vids on my channel. Needs body work at sometime but too many projects in front of it.
I need a 55-64 wagon in my life. It would be so rad to park a lowered wagon next to my convertible. I'll check out your channel and see if I can find it!
I had the passenger side rear axle come loose popped the drum off and everything, what could've caused that? Had no idea the axle was held in by 4 bolts to the backing plate. Any advice would be much appreciated wanna get this ol girl back on the road. 62 belair. Thanks
I have the same rear end on my 63 impala. I'm just curious on how to change the oil. It only has a fill plug no drain plug. Don't tell me I need to drop the entire thing just to drain the oil and fill it back up.
I read about people adding their own drain plugs to these, but the easier option is to use suction to get the fluid it out. Harbor freight has a suction tool for doing this that is cheap and I’ve use before. It makes a hell of a mess and you don’t get 100% of the fluid, but you’ll probably get 90%. I have a factory service manual for these cars, I’m now kinda of curious what it says about this. I’ll check in a bit and post an update.
They do, though I have heard that these axle housings bend sometime and cause the axles to be really difficult to pull out and push back in. So it may be worth doing some measurements to see if your axle housing is still straight.
I have done this both ways and it seems to work both ways. I’m pretty sure the factory never used RTV (though I could be wrong). The RTV is just a little extra insurance in case there are any pits in the metal, and also helps the gasket stay in place when installing it all. In short, it probably doesn’t matter either way. Do whatever you feel is right ! :)
I know that mine did not (and I got my car from the original owner), and neither did the 62 Corvette rear axle that I bought & showed in the video. So I would have to guess none of them did.
Thanks! If you buy an original one, it bolts right in. The catch is that they are expensive. I got super lucky and stumbled on one for a crazy cheap price because a guy was cleaning out his shop. Looks on eBay, Craigslist, and the 64 impala group on FB. 57-64 Chevy is basically interchangeable.
lloyd oliver leonardo - check the 1957 Chevy belairs, the 58-64 impala and biscayne. Technically you may find one called a 55-57 Chevy posi, and that will likely fit too.
It’s my understanding that these cars could have come from the factory with 4:11’s. This makes me think that they should bolt in without any drama. That being said, I’ve never done it. So I don’t know for sure.
Yes! My Impala will now do great burnouts. Maybe I need to try drifting?! The Lemans is a mystery. I dunno what’s inside that thing. Probably the same open one that you have. :(
The gear ratio depends on your transmission, wheel size, engine, camshaft, type of driving you do, etc. The spline count shouldn't matter, 1957-64 is all the same number of splines as far as I know.
@@WiringRescue yea I just held a wrench on the front between the brake shoes and the axel and another wrench on the back side to loosen the metal plate that holds the brake shoes Im not sure if I explained it right but trust me I know u can do it
This was my first car, and I’ve had it for 25 years. I bought it from the original owner. I think it would take about $150,000 to get it from me, and it’s not worth that in reality. But it’s worth that to me. So if you have $150,000 in cash, let me know.

You add some fire, dry ice and a spinning license plate and you have a classic movie end screen! Nice vid. I feel like I can do this now!
Thanks Matt! I have been thinking that I need a delorean in my life. Maybe 2020 is the year!?
Great video. I've been contemplating this upgrade. Now I feel confident in doing it.

What luck. Just found your video a week before I’m going to replace the differential on my 5.3LS - 4L60E powered ‘59 Elcamino. Cool.
That’s great! Hopefully the video has everything you need! Good luck with your project!

That’s a bunch of great info! Thanks for sharing it and taking the time to watch my video!
@@WiringRescue Your video brought back some great memories from the 60s and 70s.
Keep up the great work!
Excellent video, thank you!!
Glad it was helpful! I appreciate you watching!
That was cool.nuthin better than twins in the summer burning rubber!lol
100% agreed! Thanks for watching the video!
this is exactly what i need for my 64 impala
Nice video. I got a posi in my 63 Belair wagon I'm going to swap out and save for a later project.
I love wagons! Is it a parts car? Or a project of yours?

Nice job
Very informative

Great video brother.. thank you 🙏🏽
Thanks! I’m glad you like it!
Fantastic video, thank you. I'll need to do a swap soon.
Thank you! The swap is an absolutely awesome upgrade! Thank you for watching.
Gear oil smells great. Like fresh baked cookie. Or the most horribly awful foul smell I've ever encountered working on a car.
Yes! My garage smells really badly right now. I don’t mind it much, but my family won’t even go near it! I should probably air it out tomorrow. Lol
Might sound like a stupid question but what number gear lubricant do you need and how many bottles and how full do you fill the rear end (1964 Impala)
Great share mate.
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Did you not have to shorten the axles 1/8 inch when switching to posi?
Looks like you don’t have to take the shoes apart? Correct me if I’m wrong?
Nope, they can stay together!
Good video.
Thank you for watching!

I know it’s been a while but do you still have that rear axle housing? I’ve got a 64 Chevy Impala that has a slightly bent one.
do the axles simply push back in?
They do, though I have heard that these axle housings bend sometime and cause the axles to be really difficult to pull out and push back in. So it may be worth doing some measurements to see if your axle housing is still straight.
Did you use any rtv or just the gasket straight up?
I have done this both ways and it seems to work both ways. I’m pretty sure the factory never used RTV (though I could be wrong). Hey bud question for you, I watched the video again. Does any of the 64 impala have a C-clip on the end of the axle?
I know that mine did not (and I got my car from the original owner), and neither did the 62 Corvette rear axle that I bought & showed in the video. So I would have to guess none of them did.
@@WiringRescue Awesome! Thank you sir, goin to do the Eaton Posi route
Goodshit bro keep up the good work
Thanks, there will be many more 64 Impala videos coming! And thank you for watching!!
@@WiringRescue ? What year was the camero that you pulled those pulleys off of i think I asked a lil while ago
A.j. Dominic Francis - it should be the same as any LS1 1998-02 Camaro/Firebird.
How much do you want for the old rear housing if you haven’t sold it yet
It’s gone. Sold it a few months ago.
Another great video! Now I want to do the same thing lol where can I start looking for a rear end posi? Looks like plug and play!

Ratty Muscle Car hey bud, beside a corvette rear posi, what else can I look for as model that would fit the rear end of an impala
lloyd oliver leonardo - check the 1957 Chevy belairs, the 58-64 impala and biscayne. Technically you may find one called a 55-57 Chevy posi, and that will likely fit too.
can you tell me if I swap my 4.11 carrier to a 3.36 carrier will the ring gear hit the back of the housing ?
It’s my understanding that these cars could have come from the factory with 4:11’s. This makes me think that they should bolt in without any drama. That being said, I’ve never done it. So I don’t know for sure.
I swapped it out this week all went well with no issues thanks for your input@@WiringRescue
@@bigr7528 excellent! Congrats on your much faster acceleration!
Before I put hydraulics on my 68 Camaro convertible would you like to trade
No thanks. There isn’t much that I would trade for, or sell for. I’ve had it for 24 years.
No more one wheel burnouts! My ‘70 has an open diff. ☹️
Yes! My Impala will now do great burnouts. Maybe I need to try drifting?!
The Lemans is a mystery. I dunno what’s inside that thing. Probably the same open one that you have. :(
Would 3:70 gear ratio be good for a swap ? And also does the rear axle splines count matter for a swap ?
The gear ratio depends on your transmission, wheel size, engine, camshaft, type of driving you do, etc. The spline count shouldn't matter, 1957-64 is all the same number of splines as far as I know.
🤔I took it off without taking the brakes apart the times I done it🤔
Interesting - you should get it on video next time. I'd love to see how.

I am doing the same thing but on my 55 Chevy what gear oil would work
I used two quarts of 75w-90 with an additional posi additive.
Thanks man really appreciate
What is this rear rated for HP wise?
Well, in 1964 you could buy a 64 Impala with a 425hp 409 engine, so I assume it must be rated for that. I’m not entirely sure though.
does any one make a disc brake for this ??
They sure do. You can find them at a variety of places, like eBay, and CPP I believe.
can only find newer kits mines a early gm third member
Torque specs?
Sadly I don’t have torque specs. I just tightened them until it felt right to me.
