I followed Jose's instructions about nine months ago. I had fabulous results. The bougainvillea that I reproduced is the most attractive of all that I have. The only problem is that I only reproduced one plant when I should have done ten plants. Thank you Jose Blanco!
Love your step by step instructions. I have two bougainvillea's that have blossomed so much, they need to be propagated correctly. Thanks for your site!!!
Wow Jose's method works in Canberra, Australia. First time I have tried to propagate anything and the instructions were very easy to follow. I had an unwarranted lapse in faith at week three and opened up the garbage bags. I shouldn't have. Everything was going swimmingly! The bougainvillea has been beautiful, flowering for months. Unfortunately you can't buy the plant now at nurseries because we were one of the few success stories so no-one sticks them. I propagated five plants and I have a long list of orders from friends so I will have to propagate on a bigger scale next year. Thanks again Jose.
I absolutely agree. The over watering and the opaque plastic helped to induce mold. When I did this before, ALL of the cuttings took, but I did not over water. I made the soil just most. I then covered the pots with Winn-Dixie bags. Thanks for the comment!
I tried propagating bougainvillea cuttings in water and in a pot but failed. Than after watching your video, I successfully propagated bougainvillea cuttings without using rooting hormones but I didn't over water my cuttings like you did yours. Though I use a clear plastic bag instead and kept my cuttings out of direct sun light. I also mist my cuttings every time the leaves look dry. Thanks for the tip Jose. Its best to propagate cuttings the way a plant nursery do.
I had never luck of rooting bougainvilea cuttings, soft tips or hardwood. I tried with perlite, with 50/50 perlite/moss mix, in 50/50 river-sand/moss mix, in plain tap water (with a bit copper). They eighter rot (leaves turn black and fall) by exessive moisture, or dry by lack of mosture. So far, I have successfuly rooted cuttings from Oleanders, lantanas, Ibiscus, Scheffleras, varius Origanums, but Bougainvilleas are hard. Bougainvilleas and Callistemons.
Rupert, thanks for the kind words. I totally agree with you about the clear plastic bags. If I had used plastic instead of opaque, i could have easily detected the excessive moisture and just left the cuttings open to the environment. About removing the green growth on the stems? I don't know. It may yield better success. I'll have to try it. Thanks again. Jose
hey Jose hola amigo, its really nice video, simple and easy to understand.I liked specially the idea of the coat hangers, i used to undo the twisted ends at the the top, and the way you do it is much easier. Also shouldnt you cut all the little green growths of the stem that is buried in soil (except a few leaves at the top)? because you left some little green growth in the stems.Anyway thanks for ur video. Its better to use clear plastic bags than opaque ones, dont u think? Best greetings.
Thanks JOSE! Going to be pruning a Torch Glow Bougainvillea as I transition a nursery grown plant into a Bonsai. I will be trying to root the cuttings to get some little bonsai starters!
I let shoots in bathroom, where moisture is high and some light gets in. They usually form white roots in 1 - 2 months. After two months, I transplant the rooted shoots, or I get rid of the non-rooted ones. Right after transplantation, I spray them with a solution with 20-20-20 crystal fertilizer and some kelpak-style growth hormone.
I tried 4 times to to grow them from cuttings only one worked. it took on bugs and I sprayed it with off and killed it (damit) so THIS time I stripped the bark off the bottom 1 inch and used a blade and cut straight through to splay the edge of the stem and that worked to grow better roots. I was reading about cuttings for Christmas trees and one said to strip the bark about 2 inches and literally "smash" it then put it in soil. that's where I got the idea. and it worked I just cut through it vertically 3 times. I have about 20 leaves now and it's doing ok sitting outside in a small clay pot. I'm going to use it for a Bonsai.
We live in Pretoria East South Africa, our plot is covered with Bougainvillea, we have had to cut many down, but they just shoot up again, I have done the cuttings, but straight from cutting, added the growth hormone, and they are growing wild.. no need to plant in plastic pot first
Dear Josh Blanco, video is the subject of my interest to grow green around the house. May I know the name of the white cream applied to the cutting bottom. I would like to propagate more of such plants. Please.
Also, the climate here is meditterenean such as California's. Very hot summers follow heavy-rainy winters. Lowest winter temp is -4 C, higher summer temp is 42 C. But moisture is high all year long.
@christinelesley- how thick were the branches you rooted? How many leaves did you leave on the branch? Did the leaves stay on or did they fell off? Thanks.
christinelesley Thanks. I am also having some success with thinner cuttings (3mm...5mm). Most of my cuttings lost their leaves, but I kept watering them and I had the soil pots under a plastic bag and after a few weeks, they grew new leaves. It's too early to say if they will survive, but it looks good so far.
This is not to contradict your demo, but per chance, as i was small pruning my small potted bougainvillea, I tried to see if i would have any success with 4" cuttings, 1/8th of an inch THICK stem and inserted into a small container with vermiculite/perlite. almost 3 weeks to the day, I noticed of all 4, one showed with a small, healthy leaf and was really surprised. Now, the other 3 seem to be getting moldy, cause i had the container in a plastic cover. I do not know what to do with the one with the leaf. Should i leave the container uncovered so it won't get moldy like the others, by encouraging air circulation? ALL THESE YEARS NEVER HAD ANY SUCCESS OR AT LEAST THIS CLOSE TO SUCCESS.
I have liquid root stimulator..Will that work instead of powder. I accidentally broke my double red boug and will need to try this. it broke away from the root.
+damian brum Thanks for the question. Once they are under the plastic (preferably transparent), you DO NOT water. You should see beads of water on the plastic through 3 - 4 weeks.
What type of soil are you putting those cuttings in? also, can this work for us poor souls that live in the east coast, NY area? Do I leave it outside like you show it? Maybe you can do it in a milder temp area, if that is where u live?
OMG!!! I so much going to try this...been trying to reproduce my bougainvillea and I will give it a try.. but...after the 5-6 weeks what needs to happen next? Can you just plant it in the pot where I want to leave it at?
sir i ask u plz reply mein i hav 5 branchws which i propragate after 10 days i see a little green leaves on these branches what can i do now open it or wait
hi der jose i m from pakistan i have some Q 1.what is the best season for this..... 2. how its make multi color 3. if dont have rooting powder what can we do 4. after compelete all the process how much we wait 5. and put it in shade or direct sunlight
Need to be in warm area. Multicolor is from grafting (altho i think there is a mc specie).. google rooting powder alterrnatives there are many. 6 weeks dont give up too soon. Do several not 100% grow. Keep at least in shady spot to start. The white bags help. Check damp, after couple weeks need to be moist not wet
I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Jose lives in South Florida (tropical weather) where Bougainvilleas grow everywhere (I'm from SF also). They thrive during the dry season. So if your climate is not similar to SF, you might not be able to grow bougainvilleas in Canada, unless you have a greenhouse.
Make sure you do not overwater. Too much humidity will make the cuttings moldy. Try using transparent wrap and, depending on the amount of water you use, leave an opening for SOME, not TOO MUCH, evaporation.
lol it looks like he ganked the cutting from the side of the highway. just like me, always grabbing a cutting where ever I can find one wild (as long as its not on someones residential property) lol
It's still illegal on sides of roads. You really think the government didn't plant those there and pay for them ? So someone can really come cutting up government property because no ones looking ? And to post that this is ok ? Yeah sure , why not just go into Walmart and take cuttings from plants and see if that's ok. Buy them legally or ask a friend who has a plant you can cut up.
I am sorry to say that the cuttings died. I know why. I grossly overwatered the cuttings and it was rainy, very rainy, in South Florida. The cuttings developed mold and died. However, I put a couple of cuttings in water and then stuck them in the ground, without any rooting hormone, and ONE of the cuttings took and is griowing well. Last year, I used the same procedure as depicted in the video, and all the cuttings took. They flowered vigourously.
-beijos!
You should NEVER dip your cuttings into the jar of rooting hormones! You will contaminate the entire jar and that stuff ain't cheap! Also, you should shave back the outer bark slightly.
while watching your video . one things comes to my mind. you over watered it. and you use opaque plastic instead of clear plastic. it is much easier if you just use saw dust even without root hormone powder.

I absolutely agree. The over watering and the opaque plastic helped to induce mold. When I did this before, ALL of the cuttings took, but I did not over water. I made the soil just most. I then covered the pots with Winn-Dixie bags. Thanks for the comment!

This is exactly what I was looking for. Easy step by step explanation. Great job at doing it. Thank uuuu. Im going to do this right now. :)

I rooted cutting in water on a sunny window sill.
New Spring growth just starting to leaf out. It worked.
Jose how did the plants work out in that video you did? Great job but it would have been nice to see how they did.. Matt FL

you truly make me smile..luv ya dude...good selection criteria..1.its big..2.its healthy..3..I like it!...sounds suspiciously like me and you ha ha

I rilly love this video ....thanx joe for the step by step information....:) ♡♡♡
could you take a small cutting and put it in a mini green house, using jffy peat pellets or rockwool as the medium?
@christinelesley- how thick were the branches you rooted? How many leaves did you leave on the branch? Did the leaves stay on or did they fell off? Thanks.
pencil thickness ...the leaves were just coming out in the Spring growth, so they were tiny and they stayed on.
christinelesley Thanks. I am also having some success with thinner cuttings (3mm...5mm). Thanks.I will fallow your advice.
is there any follow up video from the propagation of cuttings? how it looks like after this video?
I really want to try to do this soon... My neighbor has a gorgeous plant and I hope she will let me take a few clippings.
hi joe, for the trash bag, do i need to make a hole on it or not? how about the air inside?
i think plants create oxygen :p
Is there an update to this video?
Thank you Joe! Really useful video :)
I need to try this next time. it's my favorite plant. I have one purple but it only bloom once. I must did something wrong?
This is not to contradict your demo, but per chance, as i was small pruning my small potted bougainvillea, I tried to see if i would have any success with 4" cuttings, 1/8th of an inch THICK stem and inserted into a small container with vermiculite/perlite. almost 3 weeks to the day, I noticed of all 4, one showed with a small, healthy leaf and was really surprised. But it is such a beautiful plant. Did you use a rooting hormone powder?
I have liquid root stimulator..Will that work instead of powder. I accidentally broke my double red boug and will need to try this. it broke away from the root.
How you cut from Oleanders? The same procedure like in this video.I need you help. Thanks:)
How often should I water the cuttings?? should I keep this cuttings in the sun??
Question: How often do you need to water once you have it under the trash bag?
+damian brum Thanks for the question. Once they are under the plastic (preferably transparent), you DO NOT water. You should see beads of water on the plastic through 3 - 4 weeks.
plz reply

You can use cinnamon or willow extract or aspirin as root hormone

Marielos Baltodano ya after 5-6 weeks it has roots, you can do what you want with it
thank you
So did it work ... ?
