I would recommend to anyone who wants to see Concorde to go to Manchester Airport runway visitor park. They give u a full tour of the aircraft and u get to sit in the seats and there is no glass panels so u can go where u want!! They also tell u who went on the plane and tell u about EVERY SINGLE part of the plane! It’s great.

Useful info! If I'm in the area again will definitely go.
I can also recommend Brooklands museum if further south - it's where some parts were built and they have a BA Concorde that you can have a look around and do a mock 10 min flight. More for the kids, but I still liked it. The one funny thing I remember is that they said that there was a big discussion over whether the name should have the 'e' on the end of it. The French won that one!

When I was in the military I was passing through (classified) air base and got to see a Blackbird (from a distance) take off on a mission. As soon as it lifted off the thing went nearly vertical and all you could see was the blue exhaust flame....then it disappeared. That was a sight to behold.

My favourite of all of those is the Boeing 727. I'm old enough to have flown on it LOTS of times, and it was a great plane from the passenger's standpoint, for several reasons. First, if you sat on a front-section window seat, you had the best unobstructed views ever (especially on the 727-200, which was longer). Second, at a time when jet bridges were still uncommon in many areas, being able to board and alight from the rear stairs in addition to the front sped up things a lot -- there were 727 flights with ground turnover times of as little as 15 minutes. Third, it was faster than other commercial jets, up to 990 km/h at cruise. It often shaved 10 or 15 minutes off short-haul flights. And fourth, it was incredibly smooth in flight and took off like a rocket, you could feel the power of those three engines as the 727 quickly soared into the sky, inspiring confidence. Alas, it was too fuel-thirsty and noisy (outside, not inside) for the new reality of aviation and it had to go, but it's missed by everyone who flew on it.

    • @glennwilliams6522

Goytá F. Villela Jr. Yes, that aircraft was responsible for the Australian Government buying new fighter aircraft for the Royal Australian Air Force, RAAF. Until then the RAAF flew ageing Sabre jets and there was increasing pressure on the Government to upgrade. They were finally coerced into buying a new fighter (the Mirage 111C) when it was pointed out that our 727s were faster, than the Sabres, in level flight. A new age of aviation had certainly arrived.

In the UK there's a SR71 at Duxford, there's also a Concorde there that you can walk through as well.
In the 70's as an ATC Cadet in West London we used to get Opportunity Flights with BOAC and BEA the were arranged by the TV personality Hughie Green (An ex WW2 pilot) he used to have a talent show called Opportunity Knocks, hence Opportunity Flights.
Basically at sort notice, usually the night before you could be told to present yourself, in uniform, to BOAC or BEA engineering at Hatton Cross at about 06:00 to be taken on a training flight. No extensive use of simulators then. I got flights in VC10, B707, B747, Trident and BAC 111. The flights would usually go to either RAF St Mawgan (Now Newquay Airport) or RAE Bedford for circuits with at least 3 flight deck crews training. We'd get cockpit visits and on one occasion I got to sit in the co-pilot's seat of a B707 and have 20 minutes at the controls with the auto pilot off. So I've got a bit of a soft spot for the B707.

I used to live on Whidbey Island off of Everett and we drove by Boeing every time we went to Seattle. We often got to see brand new aircraft and those ginormous doors open to see them putting them together. It was sad to see it go away. All the people who lost their jobs. I feel like the time we lived there, (late 70s through the 80s) was a magical time. Seattle wasn’t run over by homeless people everywhere, a person could walk through Pike Place market with no graffiti everywhere you look, it was a fun place to live

Seeing those MAXs parked up, reminds me of a photograph I have in one of my aviation books from the 70s: Its a stunning photo of the first ten DC 10s parked up at Long Beach, prepped and waiting to be delivered to the customer: 6 of them had crashes or serious incidents that destroyed the aircraft.
I was wondering how many people currently walking around Africa, South America or Asia, and those yet to be born, will die on those planes currently parked there, in 17 - 20 years time? You know, when that tired tin is sold on from hard duty in USA & Europe, to be flown by pilots currently in school and where maintenance is 'Freestyle' shall we say...
But hey: they won't be Americans or Europeans, right, so, who cares if the plane has serious fundamental flaws... cue ABBA; money money money....

My favorite plane was the B727, at least those flown by Continental/Air Micronesia on the "island hopper" route in the 1970s and 1980s. Every flight was a heart thumping adventure, especially before the old WW2 strips were replaced by modern ones. Those pilots were stunning. They regularly landed B727s on 4800' crushed coral gravel runways. The 727 was the only commercial jet capable of the conditions at the time (and each had an undercoating of Teflon to protect it from gravel kick up). One "Air Mike" pilot once told me that flying a B727 into Yap or Chuuk was like trying to control a rock falling out of the sky. Those Hail Mary landings were never boring! Super museum tour. The next time I visit relatives in Portland and Tacoma, visiting this museum will be on top of my to-do list. God knows when that will be. Aloha from Hawai'i.

Back in my day the 727 was the workhorse for the airlines, like the 737 today. I spent many hours on a 727.

Thanks for taking me back on-board BOAG, that’s the Concorde I flew twice and visited to say goodbye when it visited YYZ on BA’s farewell tour. Also did the walk through of her at the Museum. (And yes, I used that washroom between LHR-JFK after breakfast...on-board celebrities were Michael Jackson sitting two rows behind me and Barbara Walters two ahead in the 2nd cabin.)

That's incredible. The same Concorde that Michael Jackson, Barbara Walters (and David B) flew on - it really is incredible.

Verry nice, would love to visit. Only been to the USS Intrepid in NYC. There's also a small show in Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn or the Ulster Aviation Society in Lisburn Northern Ireland right beside the Air Ambulance station.

Fun fact. That gate thats by the military flight center is an active crossing. Sometimes you can see all sorts of air planes going to storage or being sent to the flight line.
Also I went to the Aviation high school next door. 2008 inaugural class.

That 737-100 is also the first 737. Went 3 years ago on the way back to our hotel after doing the factory tour in Everett so only had a couple of hours and went straight past all the halls to see that hall with the 747 etc. If we're ever aloud to leave the UK to go to the USA again, might have to pay another visit.

My favorite would definitely be the City of Everett Boeing 747, as the 747 is my favorite aircraft!

I wish everyone in the airline industry all the best in these difficult times, but do wonder if some of those planes are wondering who will go bankrupt first - their manufacturer or their airline...

I used to drive by SFO regularly, 51 years ago. A 747 was parked near Bayshore Freeway for the public to see whilst driving past. My first thought was that it was too big to ever get airborne. I never flew aboard one. I usually flew in 727s and 737s. The US government leased old 707s to take us soldiers to Vietnam. Ragged old wrecks even then. I came home in a shiny Flying Tiger plane.

Love the museum of flight! If you get a chance in the future the Boeing factory tour in Everett is pretty cool. They also have a small Boeing museum as well but my favorite part is the Dreamlifter hangar is right next door so the views from the observation deck are awesome when one is there.

Cindy Lucas he wouldn’t be able to film there though as you can’t take cameras or phones on the tour

Love what you said about the Boeing engineer in the 747. You're obviously not bound in your commenting, I like that.
