    This is FABULOUS...I am a FAN. Billy Mure, my partner, played great guitar, also. He started out , as a teen-ager, on a cheap guitar someone had given him...and the Mr. Gretch GAVE HIM (as a gift) his first Gretch Guitar. Later, Billy was on all the Gretch Ads. Billy is up in heaven now...but looking over my shoulder as I write this.....and he is SMILING. And keeping time with you. I would LOVE this.

    Joe Robinson plays with the same facility as Mark Knopfler although he is not as restrained. It’s jus a matter of taste. Joe could do Mark easily. But he’s young and showing off a bit! And god knows he has a lot to show off. Chet rarely showed off. Some of those descending runs were as snowy as he got. Yet the world decided he was Mr Guitar. Merle Travis was almost simplistic. Same reaction. It’s not shredding that gets that attention. It’s the “lilies of the field”. Then there’s the guy on the right! You can take him anywhere, too! I’m not sure he knows what he likes! He can do anything too. Chord melody playing. Finger picking. Single note leads. Any genre. This is probably my favorite guitar instrumental piece. My favorite performance of it was Knopfler’s elegant restrained version with Chet. If I could play like any guitarist in the world it would be Knopfler or Ry Cooder. They live in the groove. For me it’s all about groove. Nothing else. Richie Havens couldn’t even play the guitar and got groove out of the guitar using just open tunings and a moving finger nut. I love the guitar. I didn’t know it until one day in high school I walked past a room where this funny looking kid I had pushed around in a basketball game in gym class was playing Freight Train. I apologized immediately and forced him to teach me. It is 60 years later. I’m still grateful. I got to the festivals and I met all the great black finger style players still alive. I knew the term Travis picking but did not hear Merle for ten years while I was soaking up John Hurt and Gary Davis, Bill Broonzy, etc. I love the acoustic guitar, esp played by those arthritic old black players that played with such a blunt force trauma sound that no white boy from the suburbs can emulate. Listening to people like Joe Robinson and Richard Smith enriches my life.

    I love that song and admire the abilities of Joe Robinson but more notes doesn't mean virtuoso performance. I can understand the dislike for the simple reason that LESS is quite often worth a lot MORE and simply being able to rip up the guitar neck doesn't mean he is doing justice to the song. A modicum of Chet would convey the feeling of "Built for comfort, less for speed" don't you think.

      Acoustic Guitars sound much better for this type music

    • @Sparky6string
      @Sparky6string 7 лет назад +8

      Conversely more notes doesn't equal a bad performance, as perhaps is alluded to here. The song has moments of mellowness as well- listen for them. High level musicianship is not easy to find an audience for these days. The "too many notes" critique of Mozart still reverberates off the walls of performance halls around the world.
      'Pentatonics moisten the nether regions of females while arpeggiations and modes cross the arms of bespectacled nerds. Pick your poison.' -Unknown

    • @coconoir6187
      @coconoir6187 7 лет назад +3

      This song should be played tastefully. And above all, it has to swing! Fast play gets old fast, too. You can't swing with too many notes. Even Django played this with fewer notes. Ditto Chet. Richard's play is always very well balanced in that aspect. He does MANY things effortlessly, so much more than just playing fast. BTW, there are slower Mozart pieces with fewer notes. They are just as difficult to play.

    • @Sparky6string
      @Sparky6string 7 лет назад +2

      Tastefully is a subjective term though isn't it? The real masters have no issues making fast tempos swing. BTW no one said Mozart was exclusively a speed demon- please stop trying to find issues where there are none.
