For reimbursable drugs, China’s policy is centralized government procurement. The government first negotiates with the pharmaceutical companies to buy and deliver to the hospital at the lowest price, and for the companies, access to the government procurement catalogue means a steady stream of sales and revenue (albeit at a low unit price)

The doctors will get the results through online digital system at the first time. They read your results on computer. At the same time, the departments of different tests informed you to collect the results as well. The hard copy of test results took by patiences, the reason is for keeping a physical document themselves. If they want to consult with different doctors in another hospital, they can bring these material to describe their current health conditions and previous healthcare suggestions with these tests results.

In China, for the extreme poor people, there are some governmental projects and finance provided specifically. They still are able to get medical care service. Though, the service level might be the corresponding basic treatment to their health issue.
In terms of lower income families, they can live themselves by working hard but don’t a large amount of deposits. For normal sickness or diseases, it is not a big deal. But for severe disease such as cancer, it might bring a financial pressure to this family, though 90% cost is covered by societal insurance. Thus, their quality of life might decline.(I hope these situations will be better in the future.) In previous Covid 19 pandemic period in Wuhan, China, the government knew what will the financial influences mean to majority families. Thus, the gov released new policy about the government will pay for all the Covid 19 treatment costs.
,In terms of a developing country, finance is a big issue. BTW, it’s good to know people working hard to let things getting better.

Hi Lee, a minor correction. Most Chinese hospitals do have the option to provide meals for hospitalized patients (patients need to pay extra money for the meal plan, unlike in HK or the UK, where as far as I understand the cost of the meals is included in the overall bill of hospitalization). Many hospitals also have canteens that are open to patients as well. There are also professional carers in Chinese hospitals (at least in big ones). The differences are that all these services are optional (e.g., you can opt out of the meal plan, and you can choose not to hire a carer, though in my experience, most families would hire one even if they have someone staying with the patient at the hospital). The carers in Chinese hospitals might not have a full working contract with the hospital and do not count formally as hospital staff. So, sometimes patients who need further care after releasing from the hospital can hire the same person to come and work as hourly carers at home.

When you have tests done, in all hospitals of which i am aware in China,, all results are attached to your computer file, however you need to pick up a hard copy from the relevant department who performed the test, which is usually available after around 2.30 pm in the afternoon. Of course urgent tests can be completed rapidly as directed by the doctor.

I live in Melbourne, Australia and I had gone to the hospital for serveral times here. Right after I born my baby, they did a surgery on me because some part of my placenta didn't came out. But one month later, i got very heavy bleeding and was sent to the emergency. I lost 2L blood and almost lost my conscious, but they made me wait there for more than an hour because there was no surgeon available. After my second surgery, they said it should be fine now as they took another part of placenta out. But a few hours later, I told them I was bleeding again. At first, the nurse said it's not bleeding a lot, so I had to wait until I bled a lot to get the third surgery. When I woke up, I was in intensive care. The only thing I was glad was I was still alive. They said several experienced specialists attend my surgery and they took out another piece of placenta. After these three surgeries, I got a lot of blood transfer and stayed in hospital for a long time. That was very bad and horrible memory. BTW, this hospital is Australia's first and leading specialist hospital for the health and wellbeing of women and newborn. So I would rather prefer speed and experience.

There is a type of hospitalization called "full care", which means that the hospital will fully take care of the patient after discussion, including food, clothing, cleaning, and so on, but this is a fee for the services of a health care provider, not a medical fee and means high costs as well, which are usually not covered by health insurance, so family care means less cost.

If the hospital owns your test results, you have to get tested again when go to a different hospital, which costs you more and wastes your time. I think Chinese people don't trust other people to take care of their family members. In general, Chinese doctors in a big city are much better than the doctors in the U.S. That's my perception.

I think you've done a good job in both introducing the UK health care system to us Chinese viewers, and summarizing the differences between the two health care systems. I hope that one day people in China can enjoy the same qualify of health care as in UK, free of charge and taking care of everything, but in light of the number of people being covered by the Chinese social insurance, that will mean a HUGE amount of money or financial burden, so I guess our economy still has a long way to go before we can achieve that.

The UK's NHS has gone downhill rapidly. I have 3 relatives in the NHS, 2 pathologists and another I cannot reveal as there are only a few of them in the NHS and easily identified. In pathology, there's chronic understaffing. They are so stressed and pressured that you have to wonder if accurate diagnosis can be asked of them. 2-3mins per slide! It's crazy. It's unpaid overtime most of the time. The NHS pension system is so ridiculous that if you earn over limit, you actually start losing money! So they are resigning and working outside the grade. In fact, they are thinking of working as locums which will take the pressure off, but cost the NHS more. Apparently, it's the same in other specialities. It's so bad they have banned their offsprings from taking up a medical career.

Actually, Chinese doctors are probably more over worked, hence the low consultation and treatment fee (public hospitals being subsidized being another factor). This used to create a huge problem of Doctors "asking" for bribery and the cost of healthcare varying wildly based on the ethical standard of your physician. Although still overworked, the Chinese doctors are actually paid much better in the recent 10~20 years. Miraculously, the overall burden of cost of healthcare actually decreased at the same time.

When living in China, I visited three different hospitals over a course of many years in Guangzhou. I found the service and the cost to be amazing compared to America. I had spent thousands of dollars trying to get a simple diagnosis cured in America and one visit to a hospital in China they diagnosed it within a day and found that it was an allergic reaction to mushrooms that I ate on a daily basis. The one disappointment with the Chinese hospitals was the public restrooms had no soap or paper towels to dry your hands with. If there's any place that needed to be sanitary in my opinion it was the hospital. That being said I would choose most larger city hospitals in China over the local hospitals in America where I live now.

Many thanxs for another interesting video!! It was good to hear that surgery lies behind you. The way ahead with chemo- and radiotheraphy is what women will be offered in Germany after surgery, too. Your last two videos brought back lot’s of memories from 2002. I have 3 pieces of advise for you regarding your right arm.
    1) We were told not to have the arm flat by our side when we lay down, but to always place a small cushion under the upper-arm to prevend the lymphe from storing and the arm from swelling. I have been using a small cushion for a number of years.
    2) It’s good to train your arm daily to keep the lymphe flowing. Stretch your arm up as high as you can and make a fist - open the fist, close the fist and repeat a hundred times or more. This pumping movement is easy but effective.
    3) Keep the fingers flexible and massage the acupuncture points in your hands. I have got two tiny qigong balls. I read that in China „hand toys“ (手把件shǒubǎjiàn) are very popular. I hope you might be able to find some suitable ones for you.

Here in US, we have to buy health insurance by law. Depending on your company work for. Big companies have better deal with insurance companies. For a couple ( two persons), cost around $400 to $1000 per month in average. Hospital bill is extremely high here in US, 10 days in ICU cost you at least $100,000.00 that is about $10,000 a day. Most hospital charge more than that though. Here doctors make too much though. A common doctor can make half million $ to one million $ per year easily.

The total cost (including hospital, ICU, surgery, medicine) was less than 120K rmb (US$20K). Because it's an accident and not covered by medical insurance in China. We had to split the cost with driver's auto insurance, and that's why I know the total cost.

Another difference is that China's medical schools are all public schools (pretty much all higher education). The tuition fee for medical school is not different from other majors, it is very cheap and affordable. For example the tuition for Beijing University is less than US$1K a year + dorm fee of US$120 - 200, That's why many students from other developing countries are studying in China's medical schools (Tuition for international students is US$4.6K) . For a US doctor, he/she has to pay super high tuition for their 8 year education. The education cost can make the doctor's service very high

There are good and bad two sides of coin. I lived through both ( US and China). In US, the smartest people go to medical schools, that is opposite to China. Doctors, medical technology and medicines are top of the world, no doubt on this. But cost is skyrocketed. This is why people has to have medical insurance. Without it, one just cannot survive here in US. Also, doctor/hospital bills are way over stated usually. Say for a heart bypass surgery they may send you bill for total $350,000.00 but once go through Insurance company they will adjust the final agreeable cost in according with a market fair value and then they send a so-called “EOB” to both hospital and you. The adjusted cost actually maybe only $20,000.00 in this case. So, Insurence company pays that amount to the hospital and doctors. That’s it. You can imagine if one has no medical insurance in US how life would end up.

A rare but useful insight into the healthcare system in China to inform outsiders and compare with their system at home. I think it's very efficient and is an important factor because nobody wants any agonising long waiting time when they are unwell. The other point I like is that patients bears a small cost and that's sufficient deterrent to abuse and encourages responsible lifestyle. What I don't like is that the very poor without social insurance have been neglected when they need the most help.

Hi, Lee.Thank you for the basic comparison and introduction to the medical situation in China and the UK. What you said is basically correct, but there is one small detail that needs to be corrected. For those who are not formally employed, such as farmers, they only have to pay a few hundred RMB per year to get a medical insurance from the government. This insurance is not available for minor illnesses, such as teeth. However, when treating major illnesses in the hospital in your city, i.e. those that are expensive, you receive a higher rate of reimbursement, which can vary from 60 to 90 per cent. So it is not objective to say that people who do not have a job cannot pay for their own medical treatment, they only have to pay a very low premium to receive a high percentage of reimbursement from the government for major illnesses. It's just that this insurance doesn't cover as much as those who pay for formal health insurance who work in a business, and it can only be used in the city of domicile.
