Can't say I travelled a lot, just been to 40+ cities around US, France, Netherlands, Hungary, Germany, Spain, Hungary, Romania, Italy, Austria, Russia, Nepal, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Spore, HK, Taiwan, Japan and Indonesia. Before the pandemic, I will normally spend my annual vacation/biz trips in Europe and China. Always told my acquaintances that China has the best cities, infrastructures and tourist-friendly facilities by far. The only drawback I have in China is I'd been told by the locals that I speak with a Beijing slang - maybe that's one of the reason I get scolded for asking for Menu in English when I am in China (I don't read Mandarin but am verbally fluent) 🤣🤣🤣

There is a saying "seeing is believing". That always holds true. We should all have an open mind. Travelling broadens the horizon. It is good to hear some unbiased objective views from people like Luke and Lee. I have lived in different parts of the UK, mainly London, for more than 50 years. London is very expensive and you will get a higher living standard in Shanghai than in London with the same amount of money. An American friend once told me that New York was expensive, but accommodation in Manhattan was bigger for the same price as in London. There is no money left after paying taxes, housing, transport, foods and drinks and basic essentials, living in London. The more fortunate higher earners pay half of their salaries in taxes, so there is actually not a lot of money left. I know of high earners in Hong Kong who pay a top rate of tax at 15%, so they still retain 85%. British, European and American taxes are simply too high.
Im a chemical engineering student doing a masters degree... after watchung this i will go study phd in china of there is an opportunity. Its just a complete no brainer

Great video, and I agree that Shanghai is awesome and is one of my favorite cities as well. Beautiful city for sure! Yes a lot of people have negative perception of China from what they watched and read in the media. I was one of them. China was at the bottom of my travel list until I visited Shanghai few years back. I was amazed at how developed and modern the city is. Now I can't wait to visit other cities in China.
So now BBC has one more person to "expose"? well, at least Luke does get funded by the Chinese government for something. Can't wait to see another BBC report about foreign Vloggers living in China and the showcase of their cheap photoshop skills!
He's definitely funded by the prc govt. He's got scholarship so that's government funding. Also, I bet his food or accomodation is ccp funded. Nonono, his words cannot be trusted!
'perception'! Spot on. Just remind me a chat between me and a colleague years ago, BTW I'm a Chinese and have been living in Australia since 2004, my colleague asked me about my family back in China and he was like' what do you parents do for a living, are the working on a farm?" I guess that's the perception that many westerners still have on China these days.
There was a time when the US welcome foreign students and scholars into their universities. It has changed in recent years. Going further back, in China the Tang dynasty was often regarded as the golden era of cultural exchanges, mainly through the silk route. In fact the Tang emperors and the famous Chinese poet (also known as Li Bo) were not from the Han tribe. Seems China is returning to that melting-pot mode in a big way. Everything is changing so fast in China it is dizzying. I'll gladly spent 14 days in quarantine just to travel around China.

China has been developing so rapidly in the last two decades. I am from Shenzhen. 16 years ago, I was just like the young man, traveling to the UK as an oversea student. I was then luckily rewarded a scholarship named Oversea Research Students Awards Scheme (ORSAS) funded by the UK government. The scholarship not only covered my PhD full tuition fee as an oversea student for three years, but also it provided £1000 per month to financially support my living cost. The RMB to GBP exchange rate was 16 to 1 at the time. I was like earning 16000yuan every month, which was even more than my dad working as a senior engineer in Shenzhen, the richest city in mainland China then. However, 16 years later, the story has completely changed. There are more and more students from western countries coming to study in China now.
Hi Barrett, just got a piece of news from Hangzhou police on 26June2021 discovering during their morning patrol a young girl sleeping in front of a bank. They tried very hard to wake her up from the street but to no avail. She had been sleeping there the whole night totally drunk. Finally she woke up and was very embarrassed. The night before she went to her friend place for visit and had too many drinks. She thought she had reached home and slept on her bed. The photo of her sleeping on the ground showing her hand was clutching her mobile phone and she looked like 20 plus of age wearing a pair of very-short short and sling tee shirt exposing her tummy and her long legs. she slept in the open the whole night without any person attacking her or steal her phone. This shows how safe China is for a beautiful young girl dressed sexily and by herself sleeping on the street in a big city of Hangzhou without bodily harm.
BBC: we got another one here funded by the CCP to study & paid for accommodation & transport but we make them pay if they wants to study in the UK. Me: nice video & keep winding BBC up! Salute to both of you!

China was at the bottom of my travel list until I visited Shanghai few years back. I was amazed at how developed and modern the city is. Now I can't wait to visit other cities in China.
Lee is my idol. Honest, brave, truth to his heart. Dare to speak out. Respect.
Shanghai Jiaotong Uni is very very good. Luke is a star!
@@reir8047 and who has guaranteed that you aren't funded by British Govt to say this

guys, just don't forget to share their videos!
The young guy selected to study in China, maybe made the most right decision in his life by far.
Did you ask him if if his family wrestled crocodiles for a living?
@@sparkeyjones6261 I'm not stereotyped.
That's what they have been sold on by their BBC and other local press.
China is attracting foreign students from the west while USA is doing the opposite , sign of deterioration and self destruction .
OH you dimwit this is chinese propoganda. He has been paid by the government. Do you know anything about Uyghurs. well if you dont you better find it out, because who knows the next person who is sent to concentration camp might be you. watch out for CCP
I remember receiving letters from Obama(office) as international students...
You are smart
Wow, the place where this video happened to be shot is just near my residence in Hangzhou!
To have an open mind is truly important for everyone outside AND inside China. With such mind set……the world is so much more exciting.
Great job!!
OMG, math major, my god! My science is very poor. Although I am an art student, I still admire the great sciences, such as math. Hope you have a bright future and good luck!
Nice to meet Luke. Haha I was student in London many many years ago.
London is too expensive for a student hahaha😃😃
@@livinlavidaluke We were very lucky. My parents sent me to London Pitman's Central College for Executive Secretarial Course in 90's. My brother and sisters were both studied in US universities. And I haven't travelled back to England for the past 10 years.
@@marylo9748 a very lucky experience! I think you’ll find it to be such a different city now to back then !
@@livinlavidaluke Surely. I went to your channel just now. Big big change to both countries and the world.
I hope he enjoys his study at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
So far👍
Any foreigners that comes to china with an open mind will eventually transform to a much stronger person and will be freed from the western narrative enslavement forever.
It is very interesting to hear this, I am glad that this young gentleman is getting a generous scholarship from shanghai government. In fact, I was in a complete opposite situation 20+ years ago. I was awarded a scholarship to study my PhD by British government in UK. Thank you so much for the interesting upload. Good luck for your study Luke.
Awesome! Thanks 😁
As usual, inspiring.
Great walking interview Lee. I think you can work super with this theme. Of course, outside in a park with a split screen with 3/4 on the scene in frontwould be a Win~Win~Win format. Big hug.
So china didn’t consider him as “national threat”?
or pay his scholarship as “national threat”?
😂
The local Chinese though isn't very happy. They don't understand though that actually they too can get scholarship in the west like Germany. Every Country that has money does it. It's a way to get talent around the world.
@@weiskl887 well…they don't happy because sometimes it is far easier for foreigners to apply for those good universities or equivalent scholarship than local people…but these happens the rest of the world so I'm cool with it.
I wanted to study in China as an economic student from the US.
The British might. BBC will create an article about China brainwashing their own people soon.
👋👋👀👀快到30万订阅了,加油加油
Hi, how old is Luke again? He was about living in China. I will have a look at his RUclips channel, livinlavidaluke after this 👍👍👍
Like to see both of UK's people talking.
Thank you so much!
For all intents and purposes, learning and education is the central focus that all Chinese parents have for their children.
So, he moved to China for the larger data set. I guess that makes perfect sense if you're developing AI.
Luke is on track and will do very well, he deffo chose the right country for that.
要思想真正開放的人,才懂得欣賞中國……你們做到了!
thank you for your kind words

My country was a British colony. Your British accent sounds so familiar!

BBC: we got another one here funded by the CCP to study & paid for accommodation & transport but we make them pay if they wants to study in the UK.

I am also studied at Chiao Tung Unversity. Only one thing different, I studied in Hsinchu Taiwan. This Chiao Tung Unversity is relatdd to Chiao Tung Unversity in China, historically.
BBC really have a hard time on you (Barrett). Good video..
Thanks for all the honesty,.. a rare quality to find at the moment 👍👍👍
I disagree, i am from Malaysia and i am now planning to send my daughter to continue her education in China.
To be honest, I don't think some type of “foreigners bonus” could last too long. People like Luke and Barratts are way smarter than many westerners catching the tide of history.

Well it suit Luke's plan and career development, why not free tuition, free lodging within the campus or at least within a traveling distance.
