I am an economist and if we are doing a cost benefit analysis by considering China as a “company” instead of looking at the perspective only from the rail way company (which is appropriate here since the rail way system is public or state owned), then you will need to take into account of the benefit/value of the time saved by all Chinese who take the high speed rail way system along with other national strategic benefits/values such as a line to Xinjiang (close to the border). In that case you will see the benefit is way over the cost for the company (which is China). This is the economic justification for building this expensive system. You guys pointed out very well that in the west because the rail way system is completely private, they would only consider their revenue as their benefit instead of including all the benefit received by the passengers. Thus from the private company’s point of view their cost is way higher than the benefit. So it is not only because China is looking at the value of the long term but also due to the above reason.

    • @grandwonder5858
      @grandwonder5858 3 года назад +9

@Stanovich, you are 100% correct! Take healthcare for instance, the US’s healthcare costs nearly 2.5 times more than other nations from around the world but our healthcare is not as good as other developed countries. That is because the Republicans have privatized everything within their power to turn everything over to private companies. The problem with that is that private companies only think in terms of profits.
For them to provide goods and services they want to charge people as much money as they can get away with. This makes the costs of everything in the US very expensive. We are then hampered by the fact that these companies not only want to charge as much as possible, but they want to minimize the costs of doing things as much as possible as well. So the costs are at maximum level and the service is at the bare minimum! A double whammy effect!
Take the US prison system for example, since the Republicans have privatized prisons to private companies the abuses suffered by the prisoners have gone up because private companies have drastically cut the number of prison guards in their prisons. This allowed prisoners more opportunities to hurt each other and the guards have to do more and work harder and they are more likely to resort to violence themselves in order to control the prisoners.
The quality of the food have gone down, if that is possible, and there are less programs to educate the prisoners so that they would have some sort of skills to use once they get back to society. Worst of all is the fact that many prisoners are ending up serving many more years in prison than ever before because the private prisons want to keep them in prison for as long as possible since more people in prison equates to more money that they make from the government who are paying them to watch over the prisoners.
There are many stories of people who have gone into a private prison for minor drug charges and ended up serving many many years in prison because the private prisons were always looking for more charges to add onto their sentences so that they could keep them in prison for as long as possible.
Many of the victims of the private prison system are children. They got tossed into private prisons for teenage behavioral problems or caught with marijuanna possession and the private prisons added on charges against them while they were serving their time in a juvenile detention center to keep them locked up for as long as possible so that they could maximize profits. Some of them were sentenced for 1-3 years to a private juvenile detention center and ended up serving 7-8 years, first in a juvenile detention center and later to an adult prison system once they have reached the age of 18.
Private prisons have no incentives to let prisoners off their system. To them the longer a prisoner stays the more money they make! Every cell that is occupied by somebody is more profits to them! And this is the reason why turning over everything that is used to be owned and operated by the government to private companies (Like the Republicans are doing) doesn’t work! To private companies everything is about profits profits profits! But who wants to be a socialist like the Chinese, right?

Shinkansen's real disadvantage is that it was the first high speed railway to be built, and it was originally designed to run 200kmh. This means the more they raise the speed to over 300kmh like in China, the harder the train to maintain stability. Also, Shinkansen mostly runs through mountains and coast lines with the risk of earthquakes (compared to China that has a vast plateau). Japan will struggle to build new bullet trains.

It is ok to love China', Anyway, the love for China does not affect the love for my current country. Whenever my wife and I had the chance to travel by the bullet train in China, we always took the business class. It worthed every penny. It's so inexpensive, so comfortable and so enjoyable. Business Class Lounge at the station is also provided. 😀
In Taiwan, travel by bullet train is expensive and not as nice comparing to that of China. 😐
We also travelled by Intercity in the UK. The experience was beyond comparison. It's noisy, it's wobbing, it's expensive, it's not punctual. But above all, you have to change somewhere (in Leeds if from London to Edinburgh) in the middle. Imagine you have two heavy suitcases and someone to take care of, and you have to rush to change platforms, it's a nightmare, not to mention the time loss in waiting.😶

Dad has very accurate understanding of how the railway brings benefits to the entire country.
Let's say five of the cities have a revenue of 100 every year. Then the government builds a high speed railway connecting these five cities, which costs 500, and an extra 100 every year. The income of the train tickets is 10 every year, but the total revenue of these cities now rise from 100 to 1000. The government will then provide subsidies to the departments in charge of constructing and maintaining the railway from be revenue of the cities. In this way, everybody wins.

I would love to visit China, the Chinese I have worked with, both students and colleagues have been easy to get along with, work with and make good reliable friends with. They have always contributed to the social climate and have been respected because of their trustworthiness and work ethic.
    Thanks for your enlightening program!

But the economic benefits of convenient transportation are staggering.

@@nuncprotuncohto7576 In fact, Chinese government doesn’t lose money in the end because High Speed Rail greatly boosts economy which not only compensates the loss of profit in tickets prices but also allows the government to invest more in High Speed Rail development. The train ticket is cheap, so almost everyone can afford it, so Chinese people can enjoy the convenience and appreciate what the government has done for its people. Basically it is a virtuous circle.

They are not phasing out the older conventional rail lines. With less passenger trains on the old lines, more freight trains can run, improving the economy more. The high speed line to Xinjiang may never produce a profit, but the belt and road traffic to and from Europe via Xinjiang is now growing more and more on the conventional rail, making huge profits.

Of course no single country in this world is perfect, but the haters like serpenza , all they can express themselves are complaining China to drag people's attention, I am so fed up with this type of video.

Sometimes I wonder why Tianjin the 5th biggest city in the world by population, receives so little spotlight internationally, except for that time in 1900 when European colonists set up concessions, and that time in 2015 when a chemical plant exploded. There’s so much more good to Tianjin that the world is blind to. If possible then I’d be really happy to see you do videos on Tianjin and sharing it with the world!
