Hope the govt will renovate these old dwellings and not demolish them. They are quite charming and if you put in the plumbing and electrical wiring...and modernise them...they can be turned into very nice resort style motels or hotels.
Chinese here. I personally think not all of them will get renewed and modernized, especially when they are too remote. In many cases, those old houses if they are empty, are abandoned, because the owners are assigned new houses in the city. I doubt it if anyone will ever renew it. But if there still are people living in them, and likely they are not in those steep mountains (people used to hide from wars), many have been modernized. That’s the case of my grandfather’s house and village.
Those abandoned courtyards and houses have Spring couplets posted on the front doors, not because people live in them. That is because during the Spring Festival, in addition to pasting Spring couplets outside the door where they currently live, Chinese people will also pasted Spring couplets in the place where they used to live.

Probably even much longer...
most of these old houses are built before 1980
Thank you for showing us the rural area of China, they are really nice.
Many of foreigners won't believe that the government indeed improve the life quality and diminish poverty! Thks for sharing the truth!
Pingyao County《平遥古城》, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province has an ancient city with a history of nearly 2,700 years. It is well worth visiting
It would be awesome if you could arrange for an interview with the chief of the village to explain how it used to be - how many people lived in the various houses, how many generations lived together. Some of the individual stories
haha, i lived in that house for twenty years untill my father build a big house
These caves were where my grandparents lived and I have a lot of wonderful memories of my childhood with them. The caves are still there now like the video shows, I go and say hi to them whenever I go back to my hometown. By the way, I am a 40 yo man, and working in Beijing, living in Tianjin, and travel to Shenzhen and Hong Kong frequently.
It is easy to turn thrift into extravagance and difficult to turn extravagance into thrift.
I like your videos,👍
Very good and informative vlog

The second house must be once lived a rich family in the area....because of many rooms...and with doors in front...
Thank you very much for this video. You have done what the Chinese should have done long ago.
Don't know how this popped into my YT feed but it is very nice to see two Western Chinese scholars give their insightful opinions on China, her rural villages and her traditions!
It is really impressive and thank you again for showing it to us.

Thank you, sir, for time travelling all the way back to 202 AD to show us the beauty of Ancient China 🙏🏼.
Those houses called “yao dong”looks shabby but it is very efficient for the local weather. Warm in winter, and cool in summar. It lacks maintenance and a bit small. But a good one is probably better than modern house!

Rural China is fascinating, lots of old stuff and amazing scenery.
Cave houses in China are actually very energy efficient because they are very well insulated.
You are good people who genuinely care about people.

this is what genuine democracy is about - of the people, by the people and for the people. Look at what is happening in the US. Lincoln would have wished he'd been living in China.
I believe this house used to host a very big and quite wealthy family👍
its history, most likely more than thousands years
Thank you. Good job.😄😄👏👏
You got 22,000 likes! Love your videos!

Wooooow Amazing guys 👍
Well done, thank you for your pertinent report, not to discredit nor whitewash, very objective.
