As a 14yr old in 1985 this is the single that got me into The Stranglers. Over the following months i bought all their LP's with my pocket money, but none had any lyrics inside....so sometime later when they were all released on CD...i nicked all the inlay books from inside em in 1 visit😀😁😂 ( i couldnt afford the disc ) The best musical discovery of my life.
Lata 80te, Lista Przebojów w Trójce, muza, życie codzienne, wszystko czym wtedy żyliśmy... Napisałem i wydałem o tym książkę "Mój rok 1984". "Skin deep" to był jeden z moich hitów jesieni '84. Wysłuchałem tego jakieś 150 razy w ciągu miesiąca:) Zachęcam do lektury, pozdrawiam, Artur
Lichtenstein1961 the gig was crap wasent rigged proper so every beat from the bass drum sent a shockwave to your chest it was very very unconcomftorbal had to leave early
+EuropeanFeline I saw Hugh Cornwall doing his acoustic set , he was brilliant and also told some great stories about how some of the songs came about. I'd recommend.
Today i sadly got the message about Dave Greenfields death. Without Dave Greenfield The Stranglers were not The Stranglers they were. Dave Greenfield was an awesome and so unique keyboard artist, surely one of the best in the world. Dave, we never will forget you. R I P Dave Greenfield.
I tried to ignore "Skin Deep" at the time - being a snotty, close-minded fan of The Stranglers' early years - but it won me over in the end. Lovely song. :)
Many people tell you that they're your friend You believe them You need them For what's round the river bend Make sure that you're receiving the signals they send 'Cause brother, you've only got two hands to lend Maybe there's someone who makes you weep And some nights loom up ahead When you're asleep Some days there's things on your mind you should keep Sometimes, it's tougher to look than to leap better watch out for the skin deep (Ooh-ooh) better watch out for the skin deep (Brother, watch out) watch out for the skin deep (Brother, watch out) watch out for the skin deep Better watch out for the skin deep One day, the track that you're climbing gets steep Your emotions are frayed And your nerves are starting to creep Just remember the days As long as the time that you keep Brother, you better watch out for the skin deep better watch out for the skin deep (Ooh-ooh) better watch out for the skin deep (Brother, watch out) watch out for the skin deep (Brother, watch out) watch out for the skin deep Better watch out for the skin deep watch out for the skin deep (Brother, watch out) watch out for the skin deep Better watch out for the skin deep
Massive loss. Spent so much time enjoying his keyboard mastery. The end of 'down in the sewer' in particular ,always sends me into bliss. RIP Dave, in my opinion, best ever rock keyboard player.
No-one has died 'of' coronavirus, they all seem to die 'with' it, if you can believe the 'authorities'. RIP Dave, your scintillating keyboard arpeggios will resound forever.
Brilliant ! It’s been stuck in my head for a couple of weeks now on a constant loop, still love it, gets me through those stressful days. Wouldn’t wanna bump into that keyboard player on a dark night while taking a shortcut though.
Back in 85 I was having a really terrible trip until by chance this clip came on the TV and changed my head space entirely. For some strange reason it cheered me right up. Guess you had to be there.
Totally understand sir! BTW - love the username. You could even call yourself Squarey McSquareface. Can't imagine where I got that idea from... Just a thought :-)
Skin deep is one of my favourite tunes from the stranglers that was when musicians knew how to make great songs for their fans I go back to hearing all of these songs all over again thanks to the stranglers for bringing such great music for us all to listen to I loved this song away back in 1985 I think when this song hit the uk charts well done guys Colin Corcoran

I heard this song on the Jimmy Saville show on a Sunday years ago on the radio, and ever since then, it has, and always will be my favourite song. Never get tired of it.
I agree. Hugh was by far the best front man ever. I saw the Stranglers a few months ago and it was the first time I have seen them since Hugh left. Although they are still a great band they really miss a frontman ( especially Hugh !!) I was lucky enough to see Mark 1 Stranglers nine times and although he got more distant towards the end of the 80's Hugh was the coolest , wittiest , menacing and intelligent frontmen I ever saw . His moves were not groovy at all though !!
I saw Hugh earlier this week at the Brickyard, Carlisle. He opened the second set of the gif with this song followed by a whole load of classic Stranglers tracks. Brill
The Stranglers made wonderful music. For me, it's the juxtapositon of their sometimes raucous playing and singing style, next to the relatively civilised keyboard sounds which does it every time.
They don't produce such great tomatoes nowadays. Back in the days you could smell the tomato when you sliced it open. Now tomatoes taste like grass. I wish we lived in the 80's where I could enjoy a nice salad.
My grandpa has a garden in greece where he grows his own tomatoes, they taste absolutely divine. He also planted an olive tree when I was born. Love you grandpa :')
LOL?! They were & still are (sadly!) massively hugely underrated, the man is right! You can get mad sll you want (and all of us here are fans & we wish that they weren't so underrated but instead hugely mainstreamly popular but that just simply never was the case!) and it is-what it is!
i'm 166 years old now and i still like this song...even though i can't hear it anymore
I'm 66 years young now and their music and lyrics still excellent long live the Stranglers ❤
Many more to You Pops!
Great track, nobody knows what flipping the disk means.
Same. We lived through the best eras of music. 👍
Totally agreeing..our era had the ground breaking..and now...😢
I bloody love The Stranglers. Every song is sooo different yet equally excellent.
You said it pal down to a T
Great Song, Great Band.. one stranglers song a day, keeps the doctor away..
I'm 16 again. What joy. Girls, cars a few bourbons and some Stranglers. I'm happy indeed!!!
Some brandy and The Stranglers!
A real revolutionary 😂
This band were so versatile! My favourite song by the lads
Love the way they all look into the camera! Brilliant song!
Hartley hare was a creepy looking bastard.
This song will be deep under my skin as long as I'm alive
And Golden Brown too Another 80,s classic 😊😊

The Stranglers with Hugh,
JJ, Dave and Jet belong
into the hall of fame,
they are a brilliant band
Rest in peace dear Dave Greenfield 😥🎹🎹🎹today u passed away and we are very sad of ur loss.
Danke für die geile Musik, RIP
Love this group and his voice. It's always clear and precise. Not like these one hit mumbling buffoons we get today!
Very true. You can always hear what Hugh sings.

What he said!
Probably my favourite Stranglers track.
Hugh Cornwell, what a legend. Aural Sculpture is such a great album. Go The Stranglers.
Dont forget JJB
some people don't know what good music sounds like.
1984 ??? now its 2020 ??? and it still makes the hairs on my arms stand up ???? tell me im wrong ???
one of the greatest songs ever.....
It was nice of Gérard Depardieu to play the bongos on this track.
same as a young micheal hutchence to play the bass guitar
so catchy, miss the 1980`s....... Quality, Taylor swift kiss my ass
And Adam Ant to do lead vocals...........
Looking at it again, I can't help thinking 'Monty Don' too!!
You are right. BTW: Try "Stefan Waghubinger", a German standup comedian - he looks like him, too...... ;-)
going to see them and simple minds this sunday cant fucking wait xxxxxxxxx
+lake fire Without Hugh Cornwall unfortunately, enjoy though.
Lichtenstein1961 the gig was crap wasent rigged proper so every beat from the bass drum sent a shockwave to your chest it was very very unconcomftorbal had to leave early
+lake fire I had the same experience. Go to see Hugh CornwEll next year, you might enjoy it

I tried to ignore "Skin Deep" at the time - being a snotty, close-minded fan of The Stranglers' early years - but it won me over in the end. Lovely song. :)
R. ROOKSBY lovely story
It's better than Golden Brown
Many people tell you that they're your friend
You believe them
You need them
For what's round the river bend
Make sure that you're receiving the signals they send
'Cause brother, you've only got two hands to lend
Maybe there's someone who makes you weep

Some days there's things on your mind you should keep
Sometimes, it's tougher to look than to leap
better watch out for the skin deep
(Ooh-ooh) better watch out for the skin deep
(Brother, watch out) watch out for the skin deep
(Brother, watch out) watch out for the skin deep
Better watch out for the skin deep
One day, the track that you're climbing gets steep
Your emotions are frayed
And your nerves are starting to creep
Just remember the days
As long as the time that you keep
Brother, you better watch out for the skin deep
better watch out for the skin deep
(Ooh-ooh) better watch out for the skin deep
(Brother, watch out) watch out for the skin deep
(Brother, watch out) watch out for the skin deep
Better watch out for the skin deep

They don't produce such great tomatoes nowadays. Back in the days you could smell the tomato when you sliced it open. Now tomatoes taste like grass. I wish we lived in the 80's where I could enjoy a nice salad.
Shop bought salad and stranglers won't cut it, grow your own, reclaim the 80s lol
I did and I didn't come up smelling of Rose's, or should I say tomatoes
Maaaaaaannn! You should have been at The Whiskey in '66-7.
Fresh vegetables everywhere!
I ate great-tasting tomatoes in the 80s, especially the early 80s. Those were particularly tasty.
My grandpa has a garden in greece where he grows his own tomatoes, they taste absolutely divine. He also planted an olive tree when I was born. Love you grandpa :')
like it so much
This is sublime. Quite brilliant.
Noo...ja uwielbiam tę piosenkę! :) Skin Deep to będzie Powierzchowny.

At the top of their game. Just fantastic. ☺
Only underated by the ignorant.
How do you know they're underrated? Did you travel the globe taking a poll?
LOL?! They were & still are (sadly!) massively hugely underrated, the man is right! You can get mad sll you want (and all of us here are fans & we wish that they weren't so underrated but instead hugely mainstreamly popular but that just simply never was the case!) and it is-what it is!
I love all songs of The Stranglers. But this one is the best to me. I love sooooooooooo :P
