this movie is so good, but everyone is now fine with superheroes killing the bad guys it's annoying to hear this just kill the bad guy mentality because this movie is all about putting into question should Batman have killed the Joker it came from a time when people defaulted superheroes to having a "no kill" rule. this movie stacks on the reasons for why Batman should kill but not because the story wants you to think Batman is wrong but for you to "question" if Batman is wrong!
Plus, Jason isn't right he's just becoming another Mob Boss! The only thing he's right about is putting a cap in Joker's *ss.

And even if he is right about putting Joker in the ground...he could've done it by now himself. Metawise he can't kill iconic villains because of sells, but storywise he comes across as more of a hypocrite than Bruce when you consider there's no way he needed to do all of this like he couldn't go into Arkham himself and whittle down the entire rouge's gallery.

His parents apparently didn't want bruce to become batman. Or at least... his mother didn't. In the flashpoint timeline where bruce gets shot instead of thomas and martha, thomas beats up joe chill while martha goes through all stages of grief before eventually escaping into madness and she becomes the joker. Thomas then reluctantly sends his wife off to arkham asylum and becomes batman himself, but with... guns. Eventually, after martha escapes from arkham, she tricks gordon into shooting one of harvey dent's kids and knocks gordon out right after, and thomas soon chases after her and she only stops once he tells her that bruce can be saved and that they'll be the ones in the ground instead. Martha then listens, but when she finds out that bruce will grow up to be like thomas, she thinks that he'll become a surgeon like his dad. But thomas then says no, and she soon realizes that bruce will become batman instead of his dad, which then causes her to panic and jump off a cliff to her demise.

A unique first DC and Batman film. I would recommend checking out more origin-focused films or series first so you get a better understanding of Batman's past. In terms of animation, Mask of the Phantasm (1993) is amazing and acts as a standalone film from Batman: The Animated Series, which is regarded as the definitive take on Batman. It introduced the world to Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker. The series also re-imagined Mr. Freeze, establishing his definitive canonical origin, and introduced Harley Quinn who is now iconic. 7:02 Bruce Timm who listed here on the credits as Producer of Under the Red Hood was the mastermind behind the Batman: Animated Series, alongside writer Paul Dini and others.
The series gave rise to the DCAU (DC Animated Universe), an interconnected universe of shows like Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Static Shock, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. All of these are fantastic shows with many of the same creative minds behind them such as Bruce Timm who also does the artwork. Superman: The Animated Series is a great introduction to the character, with the first story arc covering his origin. While Justice League brings all the characters together, like The Avengers. Justice League Unlimited focuses on the JL members beyond the six founding members allowing them to get character development as well. It's very much like the MCU but in animation and made up of mostly shows.
If you're sticking solely to movies, Mask of the Phantasm is an excellent choice. For live action, I'd recommend checking out Batman Begins (2005), as it's a full origin story. However, I should mention that the Nolan movies (The Dark Knight trilogy) are much more realistic and do away with the more fantastical elements. They focus on Batman and his rogues' gallery in a grounded, real-world setting, so just a heads-up. But you can't go wrong with the DC Animated Universe (DCAU). It's peak DC and is being used as one of the inspirations for James Gunn's DC universe.

That guy also brought up bad memories for Jason, thus the excessive force. That info is not in this film, though. Jason was a killer before he ever met Bruce, having pushed a drug dealer down the stairs after the guy "got done" with Jason's unconscious stepmother aka the only mother he knew. After she died, it is implied Jason was a child prostitute on occasion just for a warm place to sleep and food to eat. We do know that at the least Jason was good friends with a number of girls that were child prostitutes, one of which was murdered by a Senator's son whom Jason threw out a tenth story window.

something so amazing about the storylines of A Death in The Family (when Jason died) and Under the Red Hood is that there is a reason for Jason to become Red Hood no matter what Batman did after Jason Died. you have this movie to where Batman doesn't kill the Joker but what if he killed Joker and was able to go back to his no kill rule? well to Jason, Batman is now a Hypocrite, that even proved that killing would be more effective, and/or would be mad at Batman for having thrown away all his moral conviction in Jason's name. what if Batman started killing within some reason? Batman would have thrown away all his moral conviction in Jason's name and let's face it a main for Jason doing all this is being mad at Bruce so he could take the other side and enforce the no kill rule he was raised on

When the decision was done to kill Jason Todd, it was done by decision of the audience. There was a 900 number to call. You call one to kill Jason. To call the second number to keep him alive. Jason wasn’t a well liked Robin at first because he was so different from Richard Greyson. Ras Al Ghul is an immortal villain. He keeps himself alive by the use of the Lazuras pits. He has a daughter named Talia who is one of the loves of Batman.

Two points on not killing, I suppose. Firstly, he carries around an enormous amount of rage, and secondly, he knows that there's always a reason, always a justification. If he could break his rule once, he would do it again, and each time it would become easier.
Think of it like this. He really does want to kill him, and that's the problem. He doesn't because he's sworn never to do so, but if he let himself, it would be like a dam bursting, all that rage, all that anger, especially against the worst people he deals with would become irresistable. If he could justify killing him there are definitely others he could justify killing. And without his absolute commitment to his rule, to his promise, all that anger, all that desire to punish them, it would become almost impossible to stop himself.
And in universe he's one of the most dangerous people alive, one of the top three physical combatants, one of the absolute best minds in the world. He believes that if let himself become a monster, he could very well prove unstoppable, but people would try. People he cares about might have to try to stop him.
And he might end up hurting them.
But there's another reason. He's a vigilante, but the city could choose to give the joker the death penalty. The courts could do that. But it isn't his role to become judge, jury and executioner. Most of what he does in his ordinary work is investigative, making sure evidence finds its way to the police, the fighting is what he does when he has to in order to apprehend someone dangerous, or to protect others.
The reason the Batman is trusted by the police (and he wasn't at first) is that he has proven that he doesn't break his own rules, that even though he definitely breaks the law, and sometimes breaks bones, he does not kill people. His rules are not the rules the police are meant to follow, but in a city with a lot of corrupt police, batman has proven he is incorruptible to the people who matter.
He didn't kill the joker in order to avenge Jason because all those consequences were simply not worth it. It's natural that Jason wanted him to, wanted to believe he would have, that he was angry, even tormented by the fact that he let him survive, knowing the risk he posed to others. But killing the joker out of revenge would be even worse than killing him for any other reason. Batman is driven primarily by grief and inconsolable anger caused by that grief, giving in to that would destroy him for certain.
If I might make an argument for the character in a broader sense. Batman is about psychology, most of the villains he faces mirror or represent some aspect of his own personality, his story, his situation. Many of them involve duality, tragic histories, obsession, the desire for control. He has no superpowers, but his stories are often better for that, because the stakes can be lower. There are some genuinely great stories involving the character, some of the finest in the genre without question, and I don't think many people would dispute that.
There are probably more great villains associated with Batman than in the entire marvel catalogue, and that's not a Marvel vs DC thing, that's just a batman thing. Because they are so much more character-driven.

Glad you checked this masterpiece out. Jason Todd was the second Robin after Dick left to become his own man and become the leader of the Teen Titans. Whereas *Dick Grayson was Batman's Greatest Success, Jason Todd was Batman's Greatest Failure.*
Jason Todd was perhaps the Robin that sadly suffered the most and maybe the most interesting member of the Batfamily as he grew up on the streets after having a deadbeat, abusive father killed by Two-Face and a drug addicted mother who abandoned him and sold him out as Robin to Joker. What is truly tragic about Jason's death in the original Death in the Family comic is that Jason's death was determined by the fans of the comics. Fans had the choice to call in and vote whether Jason stayed dead or survived the explosion. At the time, many people hated Jason for how he originally was written as a Dick Grayson replacement, even though he would've been retconned to have his own identity. But even despite that, Jason's fate was sealed, and as such, Jason was brutally killed and remained dead for decades until he was brought back into comics and reintroduced as Red Hood.
Jensen Ackles gives an outstanding voice performance as Red Hood, as you understand where he is coming from and how he makes incredibly valid points that not even Batman can truly justify. What I really love about Jason's descent as Robin is how he doesn't blame Bruce for his death; in fact, he genuinely understands that it wasn't Bruce's fault for what happened to him and defends him in a fight; however, Jason ultimately cannot forgive him for letting the Joker live for so long. Joker has brought nothing but death and misery to others, including Batman and his family, like how he murdered Jason and paralysed Barbara. Even though Batman's code refuses to kill him because he'll lose his humanity and self-control, even then, it still doesn't change the fact that countless still suffer and die, so in the end, so Jason sought to prove to Batman his method doesn't work, some criminals won't always fear him so those criminals need to die if they are incapable of changing, and for the criminals who are afraid, they can still be controlled, and manipulated as Jason does with Black Mask's criminals orginisation
By the way, John Dimaggio is INSANELY underrated as the voice of the Joker in this movie. He gives such a twisted yet hilarious performance as a more sinister and creepy Joker.
If you guys want to check out other excellent animated DC films, I'd highly recommend the following:

Batman mastered everything from every country around the world as a child after his parents were murdered infront of his eyes. He travelled to know the real enemy and stop crime itself. He's Also The World's Greatest Detective in the comic books he mostly stops crimes before it even happens or take place. As in stop the criminals before they initiate.
Ra's Al Ghul the guy who tried to bring back to jason to life is also one of Batman's mentors around the world and he's one of Batman's personal villain, even though I might be the only who see him as Bruce's Father figure.
Batman and DC animated movies are extremely underrated despite Being way Better than live-action. The live-action Batman The Dark Knight trilogy are good movies but terrible adaoptation that are many things that are changed like his company making gadgets. originally Batman made his own gadgets, suit, Batmobile and everything at young age. They made like that to make it way too convinent.

I think it also comes down to what is a “Hero”? A person who may have saved a country but sacrifice millions of people’s lives, is that person still a hero?
In Marvel movies I feel like most of the time they toned down the brutal truth of death and casualties that those “superHEROes” did or caused. Not every criminals deserve death and no civilians lives weight lighter than the others. The casualties may be inevitable but was it truly necessarily?
Joker on the other hand definitely deserves death, he has cause severe incidents that have killed millions of people or more but Batman is not the Judge or the executor, it’s not his place to take a villain’s live even though everyone would appreciate it. All these moral struggles may seem annoying but that’s exactly what makes these heroes “Heroes”. Not because they can do what no one else can but because with all these powers they’re still human and they have more than superficially ending a criminal’s live to solve problems.
I absolutely love Jason as well, he’s view on crime is very interesting and I actually agree with. Compare to criminal, he’s more like an anti-hero, who does injustice things to bring “justice”. But what he asked of Batman was not capable. Like Bruce said, with all the things that the Joker did, killing him is the easiest answer. But once he started killing, who’s the next villain that should and can be killed? And what’s the difference between him and the Joker and other villains?

Batman has a no kill policy. He believes once he goes down that path he won't stop and he'll take out people who could be redeemed, etc. Doesn't use guns because of how he lost his parents. The animations of DC stick to it, the live action Batman though...sorta does kill even if unintentional.
This crowbar beating Robin to death scene actually happened in the comics because of fans. Fans weren't liking the new Robin, Jason Todd, so DC did a vote, a poll asking fans if Robin should live or die, not thinking they'd ever pick die...but they did... 😮
This and Flashpoint are top notch DC Animations.
I like Jason Todd more than Batman. 💯 I agree with his taking out scum policy. Much akin to Marvel's Punisher.
Only DC films worth watching live action in my opinion would be:
Tim Burton's Batman (1989), Batman Returns, and Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. These are pretty much the only good live action Batman movies.
As for Superman, Christopher Reeves are good, bit slower pace than modern hero films though.
All the other live action DC are pretty much generic action flicks with horrible plotholes, writing, scenes, etc.
The first Shazam film is enjoyable though. Like a kid friendly hero film with a scare here or there for the kids.

Zac Snyder was pretty much given free range to make a DC film franchise. However, the masses didn't care for it. The Justice League, The Flash, Wonder Woman, S.Squad, although made money, for the most part pretty much nobody liked the yellow film effect used for each, the darker colors and tones.
Everyone preferred the Marvel colors, tones, humor... DC just went too dark, tried to be too different. Failed.
That all being said. There is 1 specific DC live action thing I highly recommend: The series "Peacemaker." It stars John Cena. It's pretty great.

For Me Batman Gotham Knight is the best adaptation, other than the first story of it feel like the original Storyline in of Batman Comic Book and Batman The Animated Series adopted it way better in a way.
Also Bruce was going to kill but during his training days like in wars he learned how it's pointless as both sides were just calling each other demons and killing thier families and kids. Batman wants to eliminate the real enemy and stops crime before it happens atleast that's how it was in golden age until fans started to vote and all, but Batman still mostly stops According to the theory to that only criminals dies.

@callmejacob3234 There are many reasons not just one, it's hard to express it in words. As it's based on experience. One of the reason is Many people try to mimic him even Children, Batman never wanted to put anyone else life on the line, he never wanted any robin to join him as it was Alfred him who forced him to do so and they followed him and went on thier own too. Batman no kill is exactly a Rule but an inspiration to try to not misinterpret him. This also come from Bruce's wars experience where he saw the Both sides aimlessly killed each other families and Children for revenge and torture and proclaimed thier children for breathing and all. And This is just ine event there are many things Bruce experience during training days as a child. As fir the psycho one it's only based on a theory that he let criminals die and joker doesn't exist Batman created it to stop other things while speculating that things he did to jason didn't happen and jason didn't listen to Batman and died on his own and due to Lazarus Pit his mind showed mixed fake memories of Joker killing him and Batman allowing it, in my opinion All Of Them could be combined as one reason too.

You will like the Batman movie The Killing Joke. It will show you how bad the Joker can be and you meet batgirl. Also to see the Batman of the future watch Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

If you wanted to get into the DC universe a great place to start is either the Smallville series or the Gotham TV series which are both great origin stories to DC most iconic characters with impressive introduction to both heroes rogues gallery of villains. If you start with Gotham television show after season 5 the next DC project should be DC Titans then Doom patrol after season 1 of Titans.

Those shows are the worst places to start. They get everything wrong. Make up their own continuities. Have people being childhood friends that never were. The list goes on and on.

Best way to start is the animated series from the 90’s (specifically Batman TAS and Superman TAS).
Or if you’re out of time and need to know only Batman the Nolan movies are a good introduction to him. Either that or the Mask of the Phantasm animated movie.

It’s so embarrassing that some people know more about Green Arrow than Batman 🤦🏽‍♂️ and he’s basically a lesser cooler copy of Batman just green 😭😂

Julie, this is the absolute worst Batman movie to start watching and learning about Batman. One of the Batman origin films even live action would have been better to start with. Like Batman Begins 2005.
