one more thing: Update to your video: I purchased this scanner at Office Depot a few months ago. It came with a large sleeve designed to be used for small photos that would normally get jammed in the scanned. It opens like a hinge and you place the tiny photo up against the hinged side. Run the sleeve thru the scanner and the tiny photo scans in undamaged!!
I used one of these to digitize all my parents' photos after their deaths. It's wonderful now to have them in digital albums for all the family to enjoy without having to store large albums. I was impressed with how well it corrected old yellowed photos, also.
I bought the same scanner for about 1,000 photos, I love it! It was also able to scan badly curled photos one at a time, still faster than a flatbed. The old albums left sticky residue on the photos, I discarded those albums and bought “archival tissue” to separate the photos and protect them from further damage. I bundled photos in piles with belts of ordinary paper secured with scotch tape. This scanner also does a great job with documents or receipts to create PDF files.
Very cool. I need to get this. Scanning the backs is very important for me because my grandma and mom wrote notes on almost all of them. Thousands and thousands of photos.
Me as well. Not quite sure how 2 organize them 2 make sure I write the correct information on the backs, without having 2 stop 2 turn the pic over 2 look at it. Then turn it over & proceed 2 write the exact message on the back of the new pic & b sure it matches. It just seems like a daunting, intimidating, train wreck, waiting 2 happen. I believe I have 34,657 photos alone. Without even thinking about the videos. So I fully understand. I wonder if a regular, personal use printer is going 2 b able 2 handle that many photos constantly going thru it, so even say 3 hours a day. I need 2 know if this printer will work 4 me? Has anyone used this printer on large amounts of photos?
THank you, I recently purchased the Epson, however, after scanning a few books, I found more photos from the same year. I am labeling them per year ie; 1996 etc because that's how I had the books labeled. So, my questions is: how do I put the photos I found from 1996 into the 1996 folder?
In my experience, I had to clean the "lenses" inside the scanner FAR MORE frequently than you mentioned. Usually after every 10 -15 scans. And I'm cleaning the photos BEFORE I place them into the scanner tray. So it takes a long time when you are fussy about quality.
only assuming no compression. As it's interpolated (and pixel values are highly correlated spacially) we should expect less than 4 times. 4 times would be the absolute worst case, which is unlikely to be possible due to the interpolation anyways.
Thanks Tony for the nice review, the Epson scanner is an awesome idea , but unfortunately seems to have a serious problem. After scanning, the original photo is damaged. I bought two from two different suppliers, and countries (Netherland and Italy) both products with the same issue, …am I unlucky ? It is easy to see longitudinal lines on the photo after scanning , if you put them under a light source, especially with glossy photos. The original photo is scratched. I’m really disappointed, because all in all , it looked really good and fast. I bought two of them and I returned them 😢

Great review I have the scanner. I wish I had seen you review first. I scanned a lot of photots at 300dpi only to discover they were about 400KB a photo. at 600dpi they are about 7MB a photo which seems quite a jump in file size. I was looking for somthing inbetween lol.

Thanks for the feedback! I scanned at 600 dpi because it was an available option and 1200 dpi was too big of file size. I'm sure 300 dpi is just fine. The only reason you really need a higher dpi anyway is if you plan to print and enlarge the pictures.

I purchased the Epson FastFoto FF-680w in 2020 for $425.00, currently it sells for $600. My goal was to digitize every photo and document my wife and I collected in our eighty plus years before we left Utah in October 2021. No more moving stacks of memory boxes. Now, every picture and document has be scanned and saved onto a 5TB Hard drive and then duplicated to four additional 5TB drives and given to our children and adult grand children. I highly recommend the FF-680w. It was the perfect tool to complete my monster project. Even the oldest of my parents pictures were color corrected as they went through the scanner. The additional graphic tools provided with the Epson will do it all. The smallest pictures were placed together in the Clear Sleeve and easily duplicated. With the thousands of pictures I scanned I did need to replace the original clear sleeve. I used it many time for odd sizes of drawings, business cards, drivers licenses, and Polaroid Photos. It is important to keep the scanner clean and you will get reminders to help you. Cleaning is not difficult once you learn what and where. My wife and I are so thankful Epson helped us digitize our lifetime of pictures. Do you want to know the next step in using those pictures in telling your life stories?

Hi Tony, I am wanting to scan about 20,000 photos and then doing a slide show on my television at Christmas. Can I do this through google photos, or is it able to save to a memory stick?
Thanks for the review! Random q: How loud is the machine (eg, as loud as a printer, which I would consider too loud for my needs, or is it pretty quiet)?
Tony!!!!! I want to do this! But first I need to buy the scanner🤔 i have 3 giant boxes of photos that unfortunately through our move got disengaged from their albums or were put in shoeboxes 😩 (those were very very old). This was a useful video. Once the photos are on my computer, what is the best / modern way to catalog them into a digital album/book so there are no more loose pics? Then they can be viewed as a photo book rather than an old fashioned album?
Hey Nadine! Once you have the photos digitized, I would suggest uploading to Google Photos. This will allow you to put your photos into virtual albums and share with family. That's what I did/am doing. Cataloging them takes a really long time as you would imagine with lots of photos.
Thank you for the review. I may purchase this based on your information. I do have one question. Can you have this directly send the photos to a folder on an external hard drive as opposed to my computer?
Thanks! I shopped around for cheaper alternatives too, but ended up paying the premium for this scanner since I only wanted to do it once and had thousands of photos
Thank you! I was just looking at the cost of using a service and realized it would be so much more than buying a scanner. Will it scan polaroid pictures?
to send the photos to google photos, did you have to buy additional storage, or did you already have that service? I do like the facial recognition portion of GP, BUT I have identical twins and it is terrible at differentiating my boys. They look a LOT alike, but you would like it would start to identify their wives, but not to be. I usually have to rename all their photos.
Hi I have some photographs in the albums if I try to remove them they will be damaged Bron repair is there any way I can scan them or photograph them in the albums.
Hi, excellent video. I bought the scanner based on your review. Can you tell me how I can add a background to the photos I scan? I have vintage photos with damaged corners and want a true representation of the photo. Thanks for your help
This printer comes with a photo sleeve that protects the photo as it feeds through the scanner. It scans the sleeve and the photo so the sleeve serves as a white background to the photo.
Great video.......thank you. We are looking to buy the Epson Fast Photo FF-680W photo scanner. How would you suggest scanning 2'x2" photos that are 75 yrs. old ? Also, should we worry about old photos getting jammed in the automatic feeder ? Should we consider a flatbed scanner ( at least 1000 photos old & newer) ? Lastly, what do you think about the Omni Photo Stick ? Thank you again
Yes, for small wallet photos, you have two options. 1 - Tape them to a piece of paper and scan that paper. The colors might be off, but... 2 - Flatbed scan - These are much higher quality and you can scan multiple photos at once and they're saved as individual photos. The backfire is how long they take.
Hi Thank you for sharing this video. Question: when you finished scanning your stacks to complete the album........Did your pictures appear in the same order that you scanned them? I have this issue where the pictures are all random in my files. It took me a very long time to set them in the right order only to have them come out random. Please send me your thoughts. Thank you
I think another backfire to this scanner is the order they're scanner. The photos are fed in from the back, so it scans the last page first and the first page last. If they're in particular order, there is one program that renames files and you can reverse the order of the numbering. It takes learning, but once you understand the program, it take 10 seconds to do. BulkRenameUtility - I use it multiple times a day.
@@Sean.1972 Thanks Sean...For some odd reason I could't figure it out. I tried many ways to fed them and it always stacked them as it pleased. However, I did notice that the more colours (pixels) the pictures had the longer it took to upload ...hence those pictures were stacked at the end. Maybe if I have 16 hours again ....I will try it again one day haha. Besides that...its a great scanner.
Do i always have to get 2 images of each photo? Why is slow mode light lite up? Does it slow the way photos scan. Can i scan faster? I have a refurbished epson 680. Thank you
Fantastic video, Tony! I wonder how often the scanner gets “jammed” or messes up the scan of a few consecutive photos in a large batch because-for example-multiple photos accidentally get fed through the fast scanning system at the same time. I’ve had issues like this with similar scanners like this one, and I’m wondering if it’s also the case with this Epson scanner?
Same with paper, the first photo has enough friction/static to grab the next photo in the tray when being pulled in for scanning. Simply separate the photos and put it back in the stack.
Mind seemed to do great on older photos, but newer (especially the waxy) ones end up blurry with what looks like many tiny white dots when zoomed in, especially in areas that are supposed to be dark. Any advice to fix this.
Hi! My son got me the Epson perfection V600 Photo, flatbed scanner. It's very slow but it auto-corrects the picture quality as it scans. Is the Epson FF 680 able to auto-correct while scanning? What I mean by auto-correct is that it improves the quality of the photo.
Hi Tony, thanks for the video. If I want to also scan documents, legal, real estate, etc. do you think this Epson can handle paper 8.5"x11" size too? thx.
hi, I am looking to buy a scanner for the photos. have you seen the Canon RS-40. it is a bit cheaper and I am deciding between that or this epson. can you review the RS-40 also?
Hello, I also have this machine and started my family photo project about a week ago. I very much like the machine! When you were complete with 6,000+ images and 44G of data what was your next step? Did you move the photos to a thumb drive and place in a fire safe box, did you purchase an external drive or only place them on Google photo. Did you make a separate email address to send them to? Thank you for your thoughts.
We scan slides, negatives and photos. We recommend an external drive, or two, for safety. You can also be store in a cloud. Most do charge by month, though. Warning: Some free cloud storage sites shrink your files so they don't take up a lot of space and you lose the actual scan quality.
Great question, Elizabeth! I’d love to know the answer to this too. Also I wonder how often the scanner gets “jammed” or messes up the scan of a few consecutive photos in a large batch because-for example-multiple photos accidentally get fed through the fast scanning system at the same time. I’ve had issues like this with similar scanners like this one, and I’m wondering if it’s also the case for this Epson scanner?
You can probably mix sizes in the stacks, but the smaller ones might rotate a bit when going into the feeder. I always scanned different sizes separately
I think you answered my question: I want to upload my photos to Google Photos (GP). I'm concerned about the storage capacity for future. Can you address that please. Also finding the photos later I assume will be accomplished with the facial recognition of GP. Do you have to set that up or does it automatically attach names based on the names already saved in my GP?
When you upload all your photos Google will automatically group faces and you will need to name them manually. Every so often Google will then show you two similar faces and ask for your confirmation on whether or not its the same person, its actually a fun little exercise. Regarding cost - You'll need to pay $30-50 a year for a decent chunk of photos and upwards of $100 for an enormous collection. This cost is somewhat negible considering the features you have access to - Auto face grouping, lifetime backup of your photos etc.
Hi. What can't you do on the Android app, that requires a computer? I want to bulk-scan photos and documents. For documents, I want to create searchable, mult-page PDFs.
Hi, I use an older model epson DS-510 to scan postcards to sell online. Do you know if this scanner has the edge fill option which allows the scan to show say 1/4 of an inch all the way around. Essentially I need the potential customer to see the edges without it being blocked. I tried the epson es-400 II but it didn't have the edge feature available. thanks!
Does this Epson DS-510 scan both sides of the photos on one file? Or will be 2 files with back and frontside? Can it simply count the filename up as 10001, 10002, etc
@@Gabber1981 yes you can select either one side or both. You can have it stitch together as one image or separate. And yes you can set the naming convention.
Like for the video. Tell me if anyone knows what is the reason for the error "The image size is too large. Specify a smaller resolution or scale, or the size of the selected area up to 10500x30000 pixels"
Read the Amazon comments… doubtless a great way to bulk scan a lot of SNAPS! But If you have quality shots, use a flatbed (or, for really serious work, and IF you have negatives - positives for you serious Photographers - a macro lens and digital camera) This time saver produces JPEGS while - even a low end - flatbed will give you a TIFF! What’s the diff? It’s like 1080P video vs 4K ie only wanna see your pics on a smart phone? KISS! But if you wanna put treasured family keepsakes on a monitor… TIFF/4K!
I've tried to scan my photos on an adf scanner like this several times (one expensive Epson and one shockingly expensive Brother)... Every single time i end up with photos that have lines across them because of dust/lint. So I have 60 pictures with lines on them, then I clean everything, try again, 60 photos with lines in different spots. Then i have to manage the files. Examining the photos to check for lines after each scan/batch is painful. If only a few photos have lines, you have to dig through the photos to find those to rescan I don't mean to complain randomly on your video, just to point it out to anyone reading and to hope that someone might have a fix. I am dreading it but I'm worried about losing the pictures, and my mom wants to make a slideshow :/
I think that the only solution is unfortunately to clean/dust off every photo before scanning. Perhaps there's a software solution that can remove the lines, but I don't think that would be ideal in my situation at least as that would not be a true representation of the original
If you can get cheaper than $0.36/photo locally, then do that. Otherwise, the scanner is worth it. You could always sell it as used after you're done with it

Yes you can specify the output folder on an external drive
@@TonyFlorida thank you.
White cotton gloves my friend 😊
Yes, thank you
Awesome video! Does this scanner send the digital file to go direct to a thumb drive?
wow, excellent vid. I want so much to do this. BUT, can you recommend something a little less pricey???
Thanks! I shopped around for cheaper alternatives too, but ended up paying the premium for this scanner since I only wanted to do it once and had thousands of photos
Thank you! I was just looking at the cost of using a service and realized it would be so much more than buying a scanner. Will it scan polaroid pictures?
Yes it will 1:12
to send the photos to google photos, did you have to buy additional storage, or did you already have that service? I do like the facial recognition portion of GP, BUT I have identical twins and it is terrible at differentiating my boys. They look a LOT alike, but you would like it would start to identify their wives, but not to be. I usually have to rename all their photos.
I have the 2TB plan on Google which I pay extra for
Hi I have some photographs in the albums if I try to remove them they will be damaged Bron repair is there any way I can scan them or photograph them in the albums.
Hi, excellent video. I bought the scanner based on your review. Can you tell me how I can add a background to the photos I scan? I have vintage photos with damaged corners and want a true representation of the photo.
Thanks for your help
Awesome! I'm actually not sure how to do that
This printer comes with a photo sleeve that protects the photo as it feeds through the scanner.
Thanks Tony, this is a great tool!
You're welcome!
I didn't have this issue when I went through and scanned my photos
I had this issue when I chose higher quality scans such as 600 DPI in TIFF. But, if I set it to 300DPI and JPEG, it had no issues.
Same with paper, the first photo has enough friction/static to grab the next photo in the tray when being pulled in for scanning.
Simply separate the photos and put it back in the stack.
@@TonyFlorida what about scanning photos from1930’s through 1950
Great detailed video. Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful!
Do I need to purchase additional software to make photos into a slideshow for graduations, weddings, or funerals?
Can you tell me how to print the photos after scanning them? Do you know if you have to use Google Photos or DropBox ? Thanks!
Mind seemed to do great on older photos, but newer (especially the waxy) ones end up blurry with what looks like many tiny white dots when zoomed in, especially in areas that are supposed to be dark. Any advice to fix this.
Nice job with your video. Very helpful....
Glad it was helpful!
Hi! My son got me the Epson perfection V600 Photo, flatbed scanner. It's very slow but it auto-corrects the picture quality as it scans. Is the Epson FF 680 able to auto-correct while scanning? What I mean by auto-correct is that it improves the quality of the photo.
Yes, there is an option for autocorrecting. It can generate an autocorrected version of the photo in addition to the raw version
Hey Tony what was the software you mentioned?.
what’s the smallest size photo this scanner can handle?
Great video. Is this scanner also good to scan Polaroids and older photos (I have a lot of black and white pictures)?
Yep, you can actually see this setting at 1:24 (Instant photos)
@@TonyFlorida Thanks for the reply!
hi Can you show me how to scan and save to an existing folder? thanks
Will this scanner allow.saving to a computer file outside the software? I don’t want to be locked in to the software
Yes. All photo files will be accessible on your filesystem through Windows Explorer
Tony, thank you!
How would one scan the photos to an external hard drive? I feel certain that I wouldn't have space on my MAC to store the scanned images.
That's very possible. You can specify the hard drive in the Epson software
Question.. does it have the ability to scan directly to a usb hard drive? Or do I need to scan to my Mac first?
You can choose the USB drive as the scan destination directory
Did you do any old old photos, like from 100 years ago?
Great video. Thanks for the info
Hi Tony, thanks for the video. If I want to also scan documents, legal, real estate, etc. do you think this Epson can handle paper 8.5"x11" size too? thx.
Yes it will
@@TonyFlorida Thanks Tony!
Great question, Dominic! Can these 8.5”x11” scans be output as PDF files, or does the scanner only create JPG and TIFF file types?
What size photos will it scan? I have 8x10, 5x7 and other sizes along with larger kid's art masterpieces from elementary school
Is it preferable to digitalize negatives as opposed to photos?
That's my understanding
hi, I am looking to buy a scanner for the photos. have you seen the Canon RS-40. it is a bit cheaper and I am deciding between that or this epson. can you review the RS-40 also?
Hi thanks for the suggestion. I have no experience with that one
on average about how large were the files sizes at 600dpi? also did using the scanner bend the photos? thanks!
The scanner did not bend the photos. File sizes were around 5 or 6 MB for a 3"x5"
@@TonyFlorida great, thanks for the info!
AWESOME!!! Thanks!
Great video. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Do the scanned photos exist in the computer…a thumb drive…the scanner? Where? Do you need to hook up the scanner to the computer?
Can you load a stack of photos that is a mixture of both 4x6 and 5x7 pics? Or do the sizes have to be done separately?
This cost is somewhat negible considering the features you have access to - Auto face grouping, lifetime backup of your photos etc.
tony, my computer's operating system is "Chrome OS". is the Epson FastFoto FF-680w compatible with chrome?
I don't think so
I tried the epson es-400 II but it didn't have the edge feature available. thanks!
I not familiar with the edge feature, but I don't think it's present on this model
But will they be able to scan the older cabinet cards and cev’S?
Not familiar with that sorry
Can i scan the photos to my ipad?
Not with this scanner
im looking for a scanner that does small 7 x 5 plus the size of certificates etc 12 x 10 any recomdations
Is there a good program for identifying duplicate photos?
Not that I'm familiar with
My photos have too much red colour,. Can they be set to normal colour?
Many comments about the roller leaving permanent skid marks on some old phots, thereby damaging the original. Anyone have issues with this?
do you put the photos upside down in the scanner?
I have a Chromebook. Is there scanning option for Chromebook?
I don't think so
Can i plug this up to a macbook pro?
How would you go about scanning a smaller photo?
A flatbed scanner would be more ideal for this if you have lots, or even taking a picture with your phone if just a few
you might try gluing it to a larger piece of paper, then cropping the scanned image
Does it scan large photos? 8 X 11, 5 X 7?
Like for the video. Tell me if anyone knows what is the reason for the error "The image size is too large. Specify a smaller resolution or scale, or the size of the selected area up to 10500x30000 pixels"
Thanks! Not sure about that error
How big was it, when uploading into Google Photos ( when uploaded with "reduced quality" I assume...?)
I uploaded as full quality ~44GB 4:20
@@TonyFlorida wow--you must have extra storage, then on google..
@@TonyFlorida Thanks for the answer..🙂
Thank you!
You're welcome!
doesn't the scanner damage the surfaces of the photos?
Not that I've noticed
You can also do it the really slow way using the Google photo scanner on your phone one by one
Does it also have capability to store to a usb?
I don't know
What if the photos are not all the same size?
You can adjust the holder on the feeder to the size of the photos
Read the Amazon comments… doubtless a great way to bulk scan a lot of SNAPS!
But
If you have quality shots, use a flatbed (or, for really serious work, and IF you have negatives - positives for you serious Photographers - a macro lens and digital camera)
This time saver produces JPEGS while - even a low end - flatbed will give you a TIFF! What’s the diff? It’s like 1080P video vs 4K ie only wanna see your pics on a smart phone? KISS! But if you wanna put treasured family keepsakes on a monitor… TIFF/4K!
Thanks for the info George
You can scan to TIFF with this scanner too.
If only a few photos have lines, you have to dig through the photos to find those to rescan
I don't mean to complain randomly on your video, just to point it out to anyone reading and to hope that someone might have a fix.
@@TonyFlorida it's sad that the design allows for this dust entry 🚫
I have about 1500 photos, this thing really worth $550 if I can get the photos scanned at a local shop for same price?
If you can get cheaper than $0.36/photo locally, then do that. Otherwise, the scanner is worth it. You could always sell it as used after you're done with it
this was 2 years ago any updated info.
