Last week I was searching for RUclips videos on digitizing photos. I’m guessing my search last week is why your video popped up in my feed today and I’m very glad it did. I recently read Swedish Death Cleaning (sounds kinda morbid but it wasn’t) and it got me thinking that one of the most daunting tasks of cleaning out my mother’s place and then my father’s place were boxes of photos. Add in the giant box of photos my in-laws had and all I can say is OMG!!! Last week I ordered an Epson flat scanner from Amazon that is due to arrive today but after watching your very thorough review, the flat scanner will be going back. I placed an order for this scanner a few minutes ago and now I’m looking forward to not only scanning all the photos but also getting them all organized and shared with family and friends. At 70 years old I’m starting to think about making it as easy as possible for my daughter to go through stuff once I pass on in maybe 20-30 yrs. 😊. My father lived to be 98 so I figure I have a good shot! 😂. Won’t just be photos I’ll be digitizing but lots of documents too. Thanks for posting this video. Looking forward to watching your videos on using Photoshop. I had the program many years ago but never really utilized it. Now that I’m retired I’m thinking it will be fun to learn how to really delve into the program. Thanks again!
I bought one of these in march 2018 and scanned all my photos in and the filed them and now also scanned all my paperwork in , Still doing this. its a great piece of kit and love going paperless.
I am just about to open the box for my new Epson Fastfoto FF 680 W Scanner. I have watched this scanner for about two years and have been using a flatbed scanner. But I finally realized that the task was overwhelming and too time consuming for the flatbed approach. I am so pleased that I located your tutorial. It was very informative and you provided so much great direction and examples. Thank you
I'm just starting to look at scanners vs. using a company to do it...and you've almost sold me! The fact that it will scan the BACKS of photos if something is written on them is VERY appealing to me! Now they're almost $600...but still probably cheaper than getting boxes and boxes of photos sent in. Thank you!
I have been putting it off for years, lots of family photos after my grand parents, and my family is not happy waiting for them, but it's such a mountain of work to do with a flat be scanner. So I will try to get hold of this scanner to do this. I didn't know this scanner existed until today, which is when I looked for reviews. Glad it's good enough for such a job. Thank you.
Great video, very detailed and thorough. Just bought mine and got it in 2 days. Took no time to set up as you said and I started immediately. As you mentioned, the peace of mind you get after having postponed the process for so many years is great. It is worth the investment for sure. Thanks again for the inspiration.

I’ve literally got five of the large Rubbermaid totes FULL of photos stored away in our guest room. A podcast I listen to made mention of the Epson Fastfoto, but I wanted to learn more than the Amazon product description could provide - so I took to RUclips, where I found this video review. Thanks so much for the excellent information and very useful review. I am now searching for the best price for this FF 680 W and will start my photo digitization process soon. This was very helpful.
The scanner dropped in price and is $549.99 today June 19th. It was $549.99 when I started looking at it and the price went up to $599.99. I bought it this afternoon and I’m so excited to get started on my photos.
Great review - I'm just unpacking mine at the minute because of it !! Just in case you can't remember, the buildings in the pictures that you were scanning are the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and the Transport Museum in Glasgow. The Transport Museum has now moved down to a purpose built building on the North bank of the River Clyde.
Great review Colin! My wife has been looking for a way to safely scan all our family pictures but until now there seemed to be no good options. I will surprise her with this scanner as a gift; I know she will appreciate it tremendously. Thank you for the advice. Jorge.
THANK YOU for your very CLEAR explanations. Not just that, your tone of voice is really encouraging. By my son's suggestion, I bought this scanner and haven't used it yet. Now I am looking forward to giving it a try... I have thousands of photos. ......
Ordered mine from B & H Photo, while watching the review. I ran across a box of photos, of old, last week, and put them back in storage. I didn't know what to do with them. Now I will scan them when my order arrives. No sales tax from B & H Photo. I buy all of my camera equipment there also.
I needed this last year at this time. January through May I scanned over 7,000 photos, mostly very, very old ones I rescued from a flood at my mom's house. I still might look into this scanner as I have another 50 years of photos to scan. Our family loves to take photos. FYI even found some 3' X 5" black and while glass negatives dating back to the late 1930's or early 40's . How's that for a find?
That is great... I'm guessing the time frame "January through May" (5 months) means you were using a flatbed scanner? A ton of work scanning one at a time! Kudos for making all that effort. I like the idea of making notes and comments and saving for later generations. I'm looking at maybe 5,000+ photos and thinking I can't spend 5+ months doing this... is there a faster way?!? Looks like this is it! Plus I am excited this can capture the back side if there are notes or comments!
@@johnbrown4200 I love this scanner. It captures the back side with notes or whatever is on the back. I love that it even does documents. I use it all the time. One note: If the photo is thick then you have to use a flatbed scanner. Thicker photos won't scan through this scanner. Plus it's limited to certain sizes. Very large photos have to be done on scanners that can scan large photos. BUT I was able to push through so many photos in such a short time it made my life much better. I highly recommend this scanner.

All have been scanned @ 4800 dpi - you can actually see the grain in the film! All our photos are stored on 2 external HDs and a 3rd internal drive on my main PS machine. I have to tell you.. It took several months to scan all those negatives! 😜

Great timing! I’m going through boxes & boxes of papers and I have my own plus generations of family photos that I’d like to preserve. Thanks for the review!
Hi Colin, I have a Canon MP990, it is a printer, copier, scanner (Photos, Documents, and an attachment that lets me scan slides and film strips). It also has a great quality to the scans and copies and print outs. I have had it for over a decade and still works pretty well. The software has a cleaning and deep cleaning part to it, and when scanning documents I have a choice of JPG or PDF. I do plan to install the software on my newer laptop, and then scan away. I have so many pictures, and negatives from years ago, and when I had a film DSR camera for a photography class I took quite a few years ago. Like over 5 years ago. I do like your idea of scanning documents, which I eventually plan to do. Great scanner though.
Loved your video, very informative. I am over my fear of using the machine because of your instructions on how to use. I have one question: what are you going to do with all of your photos now that you've scanned them? Thank you again for this video.
What a great review! Yours was the third video I have watched on this scanner and now, I do want one! It is now on my wish list. The clincher was when you said that you would have easily paid someone $530 to scan all those photos for you. I have inherited numerous old family photos from grandparents and parents and none of the young people in the family have any interest in them. I am downsizing and may just consider this a downsizing expense to get rid of those BOXES AND BOXES of old photo albums that are too treasured to just discard. Thanks again!
Wow. I have been hedging on my decision on this scanner since its first release. This is a fantastic and thorough review, which has really been quite helpful. Thank you!
Hi ! I bought Epson fast photo scanner for my tons of photos but the result of my photos are not satisfactory black and white pictures are almost dark and colored are orange dark , I bought this scanner after your detailed review, is any thing which I am doing wrong or can you please tell me if there is any setting which solve this problem. I appreciate your help , you have a wonderful night. I enjoyed your informative videos.
I lost all my years of photos to hour fire My mom passed and now I have tons of negatives photos all mixed and 8 mm films anddd film not developed I’m searching for a solution
No, it doesn't scan negatives or slides. The 1200 spi is guessing at the missing pixels it adds, so resizing later isn't going to gain any quality. Scanning at 1200 spi will also increase the time required.
I would've liked to see more voice over video of the method, side by side of quality, problems, and solutions. Lots of great information. Probably the one I'll go with. Thank so much.
I am looking a this scanner. good review. I was concerned what to do after I have completed my photos. I suppose you could always sell it . or tell your friends and use it for theirs.
A great review. I have 10's of 1000's photos as my family and myself were in the photo-retail business for decades up to the millenium shift, that I have been looking for some way to digitize. The flatbed is not an option. But this is absolutely. Thank You
Based on watching your review several times I have bought the Epson FastFoto, and so far it works just as you described. So thanks for that. Only issue was the included Software Disc would not load; however, was able to easily download the setup software from the Epson web site. Like you I have several thousands of photos to scan, so we'll see how we go.
Great, helpful review. Very close to what I need. I was wondering if you could recommend a combo scanner that does pictures and negatives in a speedy, efficient way, like this one. Great information as always. Thanks
Good luck finding any such machine. The closest things available for prints and negs are the Epson V-800 & V-850, but they''re both flatbeds. They can do multiple slides or multiple negatives in batches, as well as prints up just over letter size, but they're not very fast for each individual slide or negative. A digital camera with a sensor at least 24 megapixels in size, a 1:1 macro lens, a film holder for each size slide/negative you have, a copy stand or tripod to hold the camera stationary and parallel to the film, an LED light panel with a CRI of 95 or higher to backlight film, a pair of LED lights to give even lighting for prints and other documents, will give you the speed you seek with better quality digital images.
Thank you so much for this super thorough review! My all-in-one printer broke and because of the printer's error message that won't go away, I can't use the scanner. With two full bins of photos I need to scan, this definitely looks like the right solution for me! I appreciate the detail you've put into this.
Thank you! So glad I found your video, as I could not locate one as yours. Wasn't interested in the EPSON ones, too boring. Very helpful, as I am more of a visual learner.Just purchased this, and will enjoy testing it out.
That's a pretty crazy price, it will make using a flatbed scanner which I paid 0 for more paletable. It does cut photos layed side by side into individual pictures. Its the Epson sx430w which is ancient.
Thanks awesome review! 1) Where are you able to successfully scan different sizes in the same stack? 2) Did you end up throwing away your original photos?
Great video! Have a question....the digital pictures I have on my computer already, can those be moved over to this Epson file so everything is in 1 place?
It would be time consuming if the photos had been in albums, as they become sticky so you have to clean each one. So 1 per second is not of concern Please correct me if I am wrong.
That is a question that I bought up near the end of the video. The answer is yet, its a crazy fast document scanner too. So, the next phase for me is to scan all my paperwork.
I am right niw looking for someone to,do,this, it is SO EXPENSUVE!!!! And uts done from a private party, not a company. You can, alwats sell it afterwards, if you dint think you'll use ut again.
I have a 500W, and use it for everything. I scan receipts, documents, magazine articles (cut out of the magazine, of course), and so on. All my prints have been scanned. I also have an Epson V-700 Photo flatbed which also has a scan mechanism built into the lid of the scanner, for scanning negatives /slides. It will scan an entire 24 exposure 35mm roll in one batch. It will scan film from 35mm up to 8 x 10. I spent a good year and a half scanning every negative and slide I'd shot since the late 60s. All at 4800 DPI - you can actually see the grain in the film! And once the photos are cleaned up and de-spotted they print beautifully. Now, I just need to go through and add keywords in LR so I can find what I'm looking for!
The Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner takes forever to scan photographs. It does not batch scan the photos, which you have to place one by one on the scanner bed... I have no idea why this scanner will be a better option than the Fastfoto FF-680W!
Sounds like a good way to organize them. I continue to be amazed with what LR can do.. I'm using it more and more.. And not just for my photos - I also use it to organize my massive amount of reference images I use for my artwork. Your videos help a lot! Keep 'em coming, Colin! 👍😊
Great review! After you created your scans were they good enough to throw the mountain of original hard copies away? I want to make space in my apartment.
I bought the FF-680.. speed of the number of prints scanned was huge, quality of the scans not so much. Mine were over saturated and dark compared to the original picture. I adjusted all controls that I could with no success..
12:34 “this is not what we’re using for highest-quality museum art … so you gotta set your expectations there” Sure, for €100 or €200. But for €500 I’d absolutely expect high-quality. 😐
And expect higher resolution too. 1200 interpolated is not a great feature so it's really only a 600 dpi scanner. And if I'm going to scan something 2 inches or small, I want 2400 or better. I think the price is buying scan speed, not scan quality.
You start getting good-quality at the €1000 mark. Expecting high-quality for only €500 is like expecting Three-Star Michelin food at a chain restaurant. Those €100 scanners are fast food joints and street vendors.
@@ClintJohnsonWriter I’d rather use my system camera and invest more time in the editing than spend so much money on a device whose image quality is still subpar. Especially considering that you can get really good film scanners for €500, which is why I would have expected this to be a really good photo scanner.
@@Halbmond That means you probably (but not necessarily) have hundreds or low thousands of high-quality prints and negatives you place a great deal of individual value in and that you may want to print at larger sizes, not several thousand snaps that have a cumulative value when viewed and shared digitally. It is not really possible for you to accommodate the second scenario (for which the FastFoto is unequalled) unless you can ingest a family snapshot every 3-5 seconds? A good scanner like the Epson V800 is only about €50 more, but it is NOT a good scanner if you have 2500 prints that you just want to digitize at 600 dpi. It is even a worse option here in Canada where the FastFoto is $700 and the V800 is $1100.
I think you did a great review! I've got the F40 and I'm going to see how it compares software wise because I wasn't quite getting what I wanted out of the machine. I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge to make things much more clear to me.
You said the quality is good for "consumer grade" - "not the best but good enough". Can the quality be improved by increasing the DPI to 1200? Or is the quality of the image different from the DPI?
The Interpolated 1200 spi is just doubling the file size by doubling the number of individual pixels, it isn't actually increasing effective resolution. To do that you'd need to use 1200 spi Optical resolution, which many flatbeds can, but this one can't.
Excellent review Collin! I really need to do a job like you did, I started laughing when I looked at your desk, as I do have a lot of old photos too!Let's see if I can get it into my country :) Can I create a folder in my external disk for the new photos to be stored? Thank you very much for this review! Best for you from Uruguay.
I can't figure out... using the sleeve. Do we keep that piece of paper stuck in between the two clear sheets, or are we supposed to tear it out? It's stuck tight, making me think it's supposed to be there, but I can't find anything to tell me.

A lot of RUclips videos have way too long intros or take too long before getting to the point.
Awesome review with perfect delivery. Thank you so much for making my life easier, I learned all about the features on this great machine that I was looking for before I watched your video. Thanks again and the best of luck to you on your future tutorial videos.
A very detailed video, thank you. I had been looking for a detailed 'how all this works' video before I buy to deal with my boxes of photos.
Great timing! I’m going through boxes & boxes of papers and I have my own plus generations of family photos that I’d like to preserve. Thanks for the review!
Good luck with the process
great presentation ,clear easy to understand how to use the machine.
I am waiting to explore all of the things discussed.
Super detaillierter Review (auch wenn 10-15 min ausgereicht hätten ;-) Vielen Dank! Werde mir das Gerät für 50€/Woche ausleihen.
Well done comparison of options for converting photos to digital images.
Good luck on your process, its so worth it to get that task done
Thank you, you too.
Great video! Covered what I was researching. Thanks for all your efforts and sharing.
Thank you soooo much for doing a review on this. You covered everything is a short time that I was wanting to know. Stay safe :)
You did a very good job of showing this scanner Nov. 23 / 2021
Loved your video, very informative. I am over my fear of using the machine because of your instructions on how to use. I have one question: what are you going to do with all of your photos now that you've scanned them? Thank you again for this video.
Million dollar question! I think I’ll keep the good ones and toss the bad ones. But that’s just me
I’m also keeping the negatives
Very nice job on this as I felt well informed by the end of the video.
Thanks so much for the great review. I have been using my Fastfoto a few days...and I learned some very useful things from your review. Thanks!
Great video --- I have the scanner and now I actually know how it works.
Great video. Excellent review. Thank you for all your effort.
Thank you!
Excellent review! Thank you. This is exactly what I need.
Really good clear and objective review.
Excellent, thorough review! I just bought a copy stand with lighting, but might get this scanner instead. Thanks.
I don't need my scanner to be 'that' fast.. but I do need higher quality to be able to sell this as a service. Any suggestions?
I lost all my years of photos to hour fire
My mom passed and now I have tons of negatives photos all mixed and 8 mm films anddd film not developed
I’m searching for a solution
Can this one scan negatives and does the quality get better if you scan it a 1200dpi then resize it by 50% later?
No, it doesn't scan negatives or slides. The 1200 spi is guessing at the missing pixels it adds, so resizing later isn't going to gain any quality. Scanning at 1200 spi will also increase the time required.
Thank you. Very good video on how to use and expect. I got this and love it
I would've liked to see more voice over video of the method, side by side of quality, problems, and solutions. Lots of great information. Probably the one I'll go with. Thank so much.
I am looking a this scanner. good review.
I was concerned what to do after I have completed my photos.
I suppose you could always sell it . or tell your friends and use it for theirs.
Rent it out? Offer to do it for people as a business?
A great review. I have 10's of 1000's photos as my family and myself were in the photo-retail business for decades up to the millenium shift, that I have been looking for some way to digitize. The flatbed is not an option. But this is absolutely. Thank You
Ill be honest, I was a little doubtful at first, but the process went really quickly. A goal I never thought I would accomplish.
Love it! This is the solution to my problem!! Thanks!
Just got mine from Costco, they are running a deal for $400. My parents have endless photos. Planning to make all the library over Christmas.
Hey...Nice review....Which museum was that in the photos if you don't mind sharing?
Great tutorial....thank you....brilliant teacher!!!
Excellent Review Colin I really enjoyed it
The good stuff we all came to see starts at 6:05.
I might have missed it, but did you try scanning multiple size photos at once?
Looking forward to scanning my photos. I may have 100,000. It is on sale right now. Got mine from Amazon yesterday.
Go to the 6:21 to begin the actual review.
Thanks for saving me 6mins of my life
How big are the JPEG files of photos? Can you go straight to non online email or is the size to big of each photo?
Superb video, so useful. Thanks for doing it!
Great Review...I am sold and off to go and buy one!!
So you bought the EPSON? How do you like it?
nice review. would have liked a little more info on why rotation option didn't work for you.
I've read reviews about machine damaging glossy photos. Most of my family photos are glossy. Worried. What have you experienced?
Not sure about glossy photos being damaged but when I had my fujitsu scansnap i got special sleeves for old/delicate photos. Maybe that's a solution?
The FF-680W should come with a protective carrier sheet for delicate or fragile originals.
@@arttaylor5935 The FF-680 machine I have did come with a protective sheet - I think it was demonstrated in this video.
1. Yes
2. I can't do it
Great video! Have a question....the digital pictures I have on my computer already, can those be moved over to this Epson file so everything is in 1 place?
This is such a fantastic review. Thanks!
Fantastic review. Very helpful. Thanks!
It would be time consuming if the photos had been in albums, as they become sticky so you have to clean each one. So 1 per second is not of concern Please correct me if I am wrong.
Looks really good but once you’ve scanned all your photos, would ever use it again?
That is a question that I bought up near the end of the video. The answer is yet, its a crazy fast document scanner too. So, the next phase for me is to scan all my paperwork.
I am right niw looking for someone to,do,this, it is SO EXPENSUVE!!!! And uts done from a private party, not a company. You can, alwats sell it afterwards, if you dint think you'll use ut again.
I notice people are selling them at about half of retail on ebay.
@ UFGator1972 I was referring to scanning negatives and slides, not individual prints. For those, yes, the 680W would be much faster.
I set up a watch folder and scanned all the photos directly into Lightroom and organized them with collections for each roll.
Sounds like a good way to organize them. I continue to be amazed with what LR can do.. I'm using it more and more.. And not just for my photos - I also use it to organize my massive amount of reference images I use for my artwork. Your videos help a lot! Keep 'em coming, Colin! 👍😊
Great review and great machine. Still having problems with the destination folder and changing settings.
What about lots of old, various sized photos? Can you still keep scanning without having to resize the input tray?
Great review! After you created your scans were they good enough to throw the mountain of original hard copies away? I want to make space in my apartment.
I bought the FF-680.. speed of the number of prints scanned was huge, quality of the scans not so much. Mine were over saturated and dark compared to the original picture. I adjusted all controls that I could with no success..
Many thanks for detailed review.
Thank you so much for this! Looking to digitize old trip photos and this helped a ton!
12:34 “this is not what we’re using for highest-quality museum art … so you gotta set your expectations there”
Sure, for €100 or €200.
@@Halbmond Do you have any recommendations for an alternative? The scanner should be fast and high quality.
I think you did a great review! I've got the F40 and I'm going to see how it compares software wise because I wasn't quite getting what I wanted out of the machine. I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge to make things much more clear to me.
How does it do with different size pics
that is my lifesaver....gone by one.... have a huge stack of family foto's from past generations....realy just in time this video thanks for sharing
You will feel so good when you have finished the scanning.
Can you export it to the photo app on the Mac?
You said the quality is good for "consumer grade" - "not the best but good enough". Can the quality be improved by increasing the DPI to 1200? Or is the quality of the image different from the DPI?
yes, you can get better quality at higher resolution, but it takes longer to scan
photoshopCAFE Apparently the FF-640W was better for picture quality at 600 dpi but I can’t find it available anymore :(
@@fighterpilot12 Yep, the 680w seems to give a haze in comparison. i'm also looking for another 640!
The Interpolated 1200 spi is just doubling the file size by doubling the number of individual pixels, it isn't actually increasing effective resolution. To do that you'd need to use 1200 spi Optical resolution, which many flatbeds can, but this one can't.
Does it save the scans with introduced date or are they saved with the scanned date?
Excellent review Collin! I really need to do a job like you did, I started laughing when I looked at your desk, as I do have a lot of old photos too!Let's see if I can get it into my country :) Can I create a folder in my external disk for the new photos to be stored? Thank you very much for this review! Best for you from Uruguay.
I can't figure out... using the sleeve. Do we keep that piece of paper stuck in between the two clear sheets, or are we supposed to tear it out? It's stuck tight, making me think it's supposed to be there, but I can't find anything to tell me.
