- Today we know Star Wars as the dynasty it is, but back in the 90’s it was just “that trilogy from the 80’s.” But do we ever really think about why it came back, or maybe even… how. It is my firm belief that The Star Wars Prequels exist solely as way to make even more toys, games, and occasionally lollipops. Join me as I follow the 99 hype train all leading up to the release of The Phantom Menace on its 25th anniversary!

By the way, there IS still a way to watch the original Star Wars films without the bad edits: the 2006 DVD releases.
They contain the Special Editions and the original cuts as bonus features.
They are literally the only way to watch these now. Another victory for DVDs.
You can watch them on vhs as well, all the tapes before the special editions have the original movies

The DVDs can cost as low as $30. VHSs go for at least $70-110.
@@jorgerosado2087 please never spend $70-100 on a Star Wars vhs, you can find the entire set for like $10 and individual ones for like 25 cents. People try to inflate vhs prices but none are actually worth that much and should never under any circumstance be bought for that price
To be fair, those aren’t exactly the same as what was released in theaters. There are slight edits to the sound mixing.

I'm already obsessed with this video. I remember this period of time so very clearly. Going to see the special edition re-release in theaters was one of the last things I did with my dad before he died and I'm so happy.

The sticky cup topper is probably leaking plasticizer. Rubbing it with baking soda will make it not sticky anymore, but I'm pretty sure that one in particular actually IS toxic now.
my one memory of being a Star Wars kid is playing with glowing lightsabers in a friend's dark basement and I cut my foot deep on something sharp because the lights were turned off to be in his words "more realistic" and it was a mess down there

the insane revisionist history about the prequel trilogy people try and do is wild like those were/are HATED from the start
just like what people tried doing with the Wii U when its service was shut down, then suddenly EVERYONE crawled from the woodworks saying "the wii u was always good ya'll just haters" when its a complete lie and there is a decade of evidence proving it always sucked unless you modded it for emulation.
I agree that there's bad revisionism for I and II, but honestly I don't remember people hate III at the time it came out. Or at least not as much as the other 2.
Totally, tho in retrospect nowadays I fucking love III and am okay with I (II still sucks)
@@GribbleGob nah the Wii U wasn't bad at all, it just had atrocious marketing (and an unfortunate first two years). So many classic games came from that system like Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, Mario 3D World, Pokken Tournament, Pikmin 3, just to name a few. It also was a considerable power jump compared to the Wii and even Switch which were barely stronger than their prior consoles, hell some games like Smash 4 look better than the sequel Ultimate. The modding only enhanced the console after it's lifespan, not just finally giving it value.
Fun story about how Kenner got the toy rights for Star Wars. Originally, the rights were offered to Mego first. As far as toys go, Mego basically owned the 70s with several successful toy lines (Worlds Greatest Superheroes, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek). They just knew Star Wars was going to be a stinker, so they turned down the deal and Kenner got them and was basically printing money in the late 70s and early 80s
I heard a rumor that by re-editing the movies into the special editions, George Lucas didn't have to pay his ex-wife anymore as the edits were significant enough to be considered a new cut that she wouldn't be credited for.

About a year ago I found one of those comm chips, the C-3PO one, lying on the ground at a park. It looked nearly pristine, despite being 20+ years old with virtually no dirt or scratches. You can’t watch the original trilogy as it was released in theaters because even VHS and DVD releases have some minor mixing changes, but if you want it without all of George Lucas’s later changes, you can find old VHS tapes and old DVDs and there’s a couple projects that sought to re-create them as close to theatrical release as they could.

About the special editions: I honestly think no one would give a shit about the changes if George lucas actually gave people a choice instead of forcing them to only have one. (It's kind of like what happened with new coke. No one would've given a shit if they just kept the original coke, but they didn't and so coke suffered.)

The game was a disk image, an .iso file? Those need to be 'mounted' on another drive to access the contents. You could probably mount it on a flash drive or SD card.

In the N64 Episode 1 racer, they save Duel of Fates for title screen, pause screen but very faint, and final race.
I've been wondering if the alien common language is the same or varies between races. Using "I'ma Jima Pumafa" or however the spacing and spelling is, Mars Quo sounds like a bully stole his toy or he spilled his ice cream, Bullseye Nevoir sounds like he's taunting you, and Neva Kee sounds like they are staring something.
Now I am between "Do the Togepi Fire" or "Take a dump on it". As well as "Careful Donkey" or "Take a Dookie"
I love when people say that Star Wars is dead, not because the sequels are worse than the prequels, but because they put out so much content that isn't good that it just doesn't feel special anymore. While I will say it's not as cool as the 90s and 2000s where we got nothing but a lot of cool stuff from star wars, this has ALWAYS been an issue, especially in the 80s. I don't even need to mention the holiday special, because everything that came out after Return of the Jedi for a couple of years was straight up some of the worst piece of star wars media even to this day. The Ewok movies, the Ewok cartoons, the terrible Droids cartoon (that one's my favorite), I would say that all of this is worse than any of the films released in theaters, yes even the Clone Wars film. Star Wars was always overbloated with endless trash, even when it was unanimously good.

I’ll be “that guy” and say that most of the special edition changes you talked about are actually from the later 2011 bluray. The Emperor hologram, anakins eyebrows, the version of the ANH Jabba scene you showed were not in the special edition in 97. Macklunky didn’t show up until Disney+ 4K.
Also the Episode 1 trailer was shown on Entertainment Tonight, so if you taped it, you could watch it
