Ridge - A Cheap Chinese Power Meter - Is it any good?

- Review of the Magene Ridge - A left crank-based power meter from Magene; the Chinese company who made the Gravat (Wahoo Kickr killer) static trainer. This video was originally much longer, going into more detail about the testing - but it was pretty dry to watch; so I cut it down why trying to get to the point.
Any questions about the Ridge, lemme know in the comments below. Спорт
Great channel but only thing letting it down is no product information on were to buy these items
Thanks Anthony! I guess if they were super easy to buy, everyone would have already heard of them. I also have to find a balance; If I have a video and then a link to buy buy buy, maybe it seems like an advertisement, and then the review may be perceived as biased? But; your point is valid. I just sent Magene a message telling them there are some international users who want to give them some money - haha, will update when I get a reply.
Thanks for your response. Totally understand why its not always possible to give details on all products. Some of the products look so great people just want to get there hands on them. Im sure im like others in saying to get a product for half the price of some of the big name companies out there would be amazing
@@ChinaCycling to me, you're a reviewer. Not an advertiser, despite whether you put purchasing links or not. 👍🏼 Keep it up, bro!
@@anthonywylie2036 not it is easy to put here the product info to buy but it seems he is so lazy to do it and asking people to suffer it while searchin them in google , even there is no detailed information in desciprtions at all,
Did you get us a link to order?
Thanks for the video.
I have one of these, haven"t done any direct data comparisons with my Neo but out on the roads the Power Meter has been faultless and appears to be giving me stable and accurate data. Very easy to install and use, i would definitely recommend this product
Good to hear it's not just me.
Ridge is made on Xcadey factory for Magene. It is the same Xcadey inside but with other looking sensor. My team is using Xcadey for almost 2 years now, works well and stable. Latest version with black motherboard works via BT with ZWIFT on PC, Mac and Phones. Also work with POLAR bike computers (tested with V800 and V650)
I am using quite a few Magene products eg hr/candence/speed sensors, trainer etc., all of them work just fine. Lucky that I live in Hong Kong and easily buy from Taobao. I am keen to try this power meter!
In HK you can buy a 4iii or stages for the same price-ish if you buy from the UK VAT free. I like Magene, I have a Gravat 2 and its not bad.
I really do love watching your vids. Thanks to you I see what other options there are on the market. Still, I don't see myself buying a power meter clearly cause I wouldn't get any value. I'm riding my bike just with a smartphone in my back pocket with strava recording everything ;)
Sometimes you just gotta get on your bike and ride it :)
Hello! congrats for the video, really interesting! how did you pickup the data from both powermeters and put it into excel?
Could you do a review on the Magene P35 Dual Road Bike Power Meter please? saw this on line and it looks very interesting considering Pioneer has stopped making power meters.
We need a llama lab test with this.
I have a CAA12 105 but with cannondale crankset. Any idea if I can get a cannondale fitted powermeter or just use an ultega crank arm on the left.
Awesome info. Thanks !!!
So, how do I purchase/order one of these if I live in the US or Latin America?
Do they plan to sell these internationally? Would love to order one of these.
This is looking like xcadey whats the difference between them? Ive a wahoo Bolt.. is it compatible with it?
Any word on the clearance differences between the crank and the chainstay which might cause problems?
hi has the spike issue been fixed with a firmware upgrade?
How much additional clearance is needed behind the crankarm?
Hi Champ. What would be a better option between xcadey and magene ? Thanx
Will this Ridge fit on the Shimano Claris R2000 drivetrain? And work with Strava via Bluetooth on an iPhone 6 ??
Are you reviewing the Ridge Dual anytime soon?
How can I get my data into Strava? I typically use my phone as my bike computer to pair with sensors
if i have a Shimano Ultegra crank where to send it so they can install the power meter? is this process cheaper than buying the crank with pre-installed PM?
Awesome video
Im in CN, do you have a contact that I can reference to for sending in my crank arm?
Here in the UK they are now matched for on price by both Stages and 4iiii.
Hi, like your channel. Please could you post links of where you can buy this from?
Good review
Hi Joe, can this power meter connect to bryton rider 420?
Doesnt actually matter if its not telling you your exact power anyway as the results that you get you will still notice gains etc
A lot of smartphones support ant+ but dont advertise it. Qualcomms and Samsung xynoss chipsets often have Ant+. There are apps in the app store to check and enable ant+ radio
Where can you buy it? which website should I go to?
Should I go for Winspace T1500D or Canyon Aeroad CF? Winspace is 1500$ while Canyon is 2000$. Canyon is far reputable and well known brand. Kindly advise
I would really love to see magene come to the Western market without going through a taobao broker, unless they are infringing on certain patterns (not that I am a fan of pattern holders monopolising a market)
Would I notice any difference having this as the left crank on a Claris group?
Jacqueline Waters you would have a crankarm different than the rest... if you bought the crankset... meaning the two cranks and the chainrings... you would probably save 300g
thank you!
Ehm... where to buy it? :)
Does it work with Wahoo? I know xcadey has issues with this computer, so wander if magene was tested?
I know a bunch of the Magene engineers personally use Wahoo Element bike computers, so I imagine no problems,
Do you have any insider information on the upcoming Magene P35cs crankset power meter?
If I did I wouldn't be able to talk about it here.;)
are tires from 700x28 or 700x30?
Hi great review. One question, it says on the web site that it has a life time of 400 riding hrs. The way it is put it appears that this in regard to the power meter. I would have assumed that this is the batter? It doesn't clarify this though, however the next line on the spec sheet is the size of battery. I would be very disappointed if it went belly up after only 400 hours.
It's the battery life, not the product life :)
It is the battery life. The product life is 200 hours. :-)
can i use this with ultegra 6700?
Can you send me link for this product ?
4iii not at same price point?
Hey mate, any idea on where I can purchase this from the USA end...cheers, Adam
They are available on AliExpress
Where can I get one of these?
Hi China Cycling. Question. I watched your review, thanks. I have an older bike with Ultegra 6700 172.5 Cranks. I see the Ultegra Ridge comes in a 172.5 mm 53/39T size. My question is, will this crank work on my older crank set? PLEASE help! Thank you.
I'm no Shimano expert, but I'm 90% sure it WILL work no problem.
Thank you!
Do your cranks have the hollow tech 2 attachment?
Do you know where I can get a venge 2019 from China?
alibaba
A replica right?
Hello,
Looking for assistance. I purchased the Ridge unit in Jan. 2019. Just under the wire, to the USA I think.
Anyway, I've had out-box-issues, with the sensor details transmitting to my Garmin 520+
I'm very technical, so I'm searching for a way to contact Magene support? Their English version of the website doesn't clearly show a way to contact them for support.
Now to be clear, I haven't installed the Android APK file onto my phone yet. Is it a requirement?
I had a Stages Gen 2 and 3... paired with Garmin's 520+, lots of drop outs and power metrics errors. Only the overall average power and Normalized Power is ok. Tested with a Lezyne and Wahoo and these issues disappear. Go figure.
Update: I was able to resolve all my issues by employing the simple technique of moving the flexible negative terminal band away from the body to be more in contact with the coin cell battery. Discovery / Firmware Updating and Pairing with the Garmin was no longer an issue after that. I've completely replaced my PowerTap with this PowerMeter and the differences are marginal.
A far as it being water-proof. The answer is a big yes! 2 hours of racing in sheets or rain and flooding proved it's worthiness.
I need a pair of Carbon forks, 12mm through axel, disc brake with 1 1/18 stem.... But where can I buy them? How can I buy from China?? Have you got a shop I can use?
Aliexpress
Any online stores selling them with international shipping?
Try taobao
Aliexpress
It seems that I cannot order them in italy for that price.
I installed Ridge on my road bike last month, encountered cadence reading failed and calibration failed when I used TrainerRoad iOS app to connect with(Bluetooth). I already report this issue to Magene. Have you encounter same issues? Btw, I agree your conclusion. But about the water resistant test. I think you should remove the battery cap to check if there any water in it. Sometime you power meter is workable with small amount water.
When i first used the unit back in July there were some drops in cadence, but when i checked i saw there was a firmware update. I installed the update and no more drops. I used the magene app to calibrate. Did yours work fine with ANT+?
@@ChinaCycling ANT+ works correctly. Only have issues by using Bluetooth.
@@ChinaCycling i Cannot find the magene app, could someone please post the download link? Thanks
Any update in 2020 ?
For that price I want to buy one. Please tell me where I can buy it for that price.
If you're in China, Magene have an official store on taobao.com
I can almost afford that!
How do you know the vector or the ridge is giving the true result?
Good question. I've done a few >30km climbs and noted the average power. Then use an online hill climb calculator, enter the bike weight, rider weight, height, climb length, average gradient, etc and see the estimated wattage for the time I took, then compare to the average power from the Garmin. The 3 or 4 times I've done this, it's within 5-10 watts.
So there are no dual sided crank arms yet for this product??
Magene told me nothing, but to me it's the logical progression. I guess just watch this space.
They have dual side now
Can you put this on a 105 groupset?
Yes just get the correct crank size. The same as your right length
LINK???
Any links?
Sorry can Yu send me link for apk file to install app on Android and calibrate thank yu
Hi China Cycling... what about automatic temperature compensation???? It is important?
Yes, it's important. All of the newest Magene power meters have it too.
Didn't get an answer but poking around I found some on Aliexpress for a very fair price...anyone looking can check there.
Is the 165mm available in Ultegra?
It wasn't in the first batch, but I think they have it now. If not you can ship them your crank and they'll put it on for you.
when are they doing a sram version?
This kind of power meter doesn't work very well with carbon cranks. You have to put the strain gauges in the spindle or on the spider. XCadey do one like this, I have one on the way for review.
Is there any Garmin Vector similar Power meter on the market? Thanks
Not yet, but im sure someone is working on one. To be fair though, the Assioma is already pretty cheap.
@@ChinaCycling Thank you Joe👍
Had mine for two months- was gone for one month, so it has only had one month of light use- and it has stopped working. Was having dropout issues- reporting zero cadence and zero power while climbing- then it just stopped. Replaced battery and nothing. MageneUtility App won’t connect to the pedal.
Send them an email, in my experience their user support is very good.
@@ChinaCycling I did, yangkun replied and said to send it to them. Been about two weeks, waiting to hear back from them.
Got my crank back after about 6 weeks and it has been great since then- about three months now.
been running a shimano 4iiii crank that I picked up on sale. pretty similar price to these guys id reccomend stages or 4iiii
when is 4iii on sale?
@@v90cross2 it was chain reaction but the on sale stock is long gone
is it just glued on to the crank arm...??
Yes, usually epoxy.
@@captainswoop8722 thanks, sorry for my ignorance, but why dont they just sell the meter and glue it yourself???
seems a bit much to buy a whole new crank arm..
@@stussho Because you would then need to do a calibration of the strain gauges. That requires specialised equipment
What if you got shimano 105?
I'm late to replay but but crank arms can be swapped between 105,ultegra and dura-ace. I use a 105 4iiii one sided meter with my ultegra drive train.
hey, can you make a tuto for the app.. only in chinese I cant understand. thanks
The Magene Utility App? Mine is already in English. Maybe set your phone's language to English - if it's in a different language, maybe it defaults to Chinese?
@@ChinaCycling how do you activate the product through Magene App ( without mainland China phone number to receive activation code )
could you tell us where we can buy this product?
If you're in China, taobao.com - if not... maybe make a friend in China who can buy it and send it to you.... This sounds almost like a business opportunity, haha,
Yeah almost like you could have a friend here in the states that you ship too who sells them states side for you, ( for a very small fee)! Sounds like a good import business idea!!! If only you knew someone who would do that for you☝🏼☝🏼☝🏼
@@ChinaCycling it is easy to buy things from China 😎. I do sell some cycling stuff from China actually. I will search for this power meter. It looks very good
These look amazing - I already have Stages power meters, but they´re undoubtedly overpriced when you consider how cheap the sensors are needed to make these things - great to see they´ve finally arrived on the market. Let´s hope they make a SRAM version, as the only bike I have which doesn´t have a power meter has a SRAM groupset!
I have the same problem. I think these crank arm based strain gauges are very hard / impossible to get working properly on carbon cranks. But, I don't wanna give up my SRAM cranks.
@@ChinaCycling It's logical - the carbon doesn't flex like metal, so with these working by measuring the flex the carbon gives them very little to measure. The only power meter I can see for my (MTB) SRAM setup looks to have the strain gauges inside the chain ring, which is aluminium!
Dammit I just bought a Stages
Where do you buy/order the Magene products?
aliexpress has most of the range.
China Cycling looks like it’s difficult to get a 172.5 mm though
rémi nfkb I gave up on Magene as they had limited versions available and required me to send my left crank to them for fitting so I ended up ordering a 4iiii Precision for the sake of convenience
rinksdinks I am also about to go for a 4iii app after hours of research and you tube watching :) was tempted by XCadey also but seems that it’s kinda bet...
@@nfkb0 Same here, I also considered XCadey but appears they were using a developer ANT+ code so my Wahoo Bolt could have trouble detecting it. The 4iiii maybe a little more expensive but it's proven
There will be a difference between power measured at different places on the bike. From the crank to the wheel you will lose power...
A lot like the stages power meter.
Probably more reliable then the Garmin vector pedals..
if you have the vector pedals why would you need this
They don't do a double sided one?
Not yet, ;)

great stuff but you gotta post links man
Working on some deals with distributors to get these things available in the west.
I bought 4 Megene speed/cadence sensors and all of them died in less then 6 mounths. In all sensors I found moisture under cover on battery and pcb plate. Sensors had identical shity cover like this on PM with tiny little rubber seal. Run away from Megene
That's interesting. What climate do you live in? Do you have some photos? I'm sure Magene would be more than interested in seeing what caused the problem and helping you out. They're a good bunch of people who genuinely believe in their products and if there's an area to improve, I'm sure they will. As you saw in the video, I fully submerged it in a bucket of water with no water ingress.
@@ChinaCycling I live in Croatia/EU. Sensors are in garbage, of course. Even, one of sensors come with unglued housing witch I tried to glue together. But that one did not last to long.
I have had Magene Speed and Cadence Sensors on my bike for 6 months. I have ridden many times in heavy rain and once accidentally dropped my bike in the sea when transferring from a boat. No problems with the Magene sensors.
try axpower ,the best chinese powe meter
More informatión, please? Web, where Buy? References?
is this the same as xcadey?
Andrew Bedford no, it’s two different brand
Wow! That's my CUBE!
Marcus' died 2 weeks ago in a crash. He replaced it with the new disc brake version.
@@ChinaCycling I'm so sorry!
@@ChinaCycling I'm so sorry!
Why are power meters expensive? surely its just a sensor?
Winstan There’s the issue of putting a very accurate sensor inside a crank, in a way that’s durable and waterproof. Then the whole assembly has to be lightweight, but also has to hold up to 1200W+ sprints.
I hear that currently the biggest obstacle is the need to individually calibrate every single power meter, which takes a lot of time and equipment. I’m not an expert on this subject though, just relaying my knowledge that I’ve learned thus far.
Limited use. Not everybody use Shimano
I would better wait for IQ2, better that noname china product. BTW there are some powermeter under 400 EUR
I find the products of the company XCadey interesting from the Price point. However, with my last purchase I had to learn that if you have a problem with them, you should not expect a solution. For Europe there is currently no proper help from the manufacturer.
Main problem is, as always, the quality assurance ex works. One can be lucky and everything fits or not. When I bought it, the electronics on the power meter were defective at the factory first. It was exchanged after months but against another series. There the charging cable plug had been produced wrong. So after 6 month no solution. But I would be happy if other customers would feel better.Mehr anzeigen Weniger anzeigen Antworten 1
I agree.
well I don't know about "soo cheap", $240 is still a chunk of money. But I'm totally happy the prices are coming down.
Compare that to most other powermeters which start at 500€.

so they ript off stages. ok
Nah, it doesn't have the battery issues and random units dying like Stages does. ;)
@@ChinaCycling My stages has no issues whats so ever, in two years.
$700...... that's not "Cheap"
They are total shit, my friend bought one and it broke after just 4 months.
What happened? The one in this video is still going fine with around 35,000km on it now.
@@ChinaCycling One day it just doesnt work anymore, no reading no nothing. He sent it back for warranty.
It's not cheap.
I mean, relatively speaking?
So it's a useless piece of shit. If it does this crap on the road, on mtb it's just a waste of money
