XCadey 2XPOWER Review - $280 to convert your crank to a dual-sided power meter (Vs. Assioma Duo)

  • I'm in voluntary isolation to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus here in China, it's giving me time to do some videos.
    Last year ‪@gplama‬ reviewed the single-sided XCadey power meter, this is the dual-sided version. If you're in China it''s a bargain of a power meter, but is it accurate? Let's take a look...
    Shane has also well documented the inaccuracy or... 'weirdness' of Shimano-based right hand power meters. ‪@kwakeham‬ speculated this could be because of the asymmetric design of the latest Shimano crankarms. So, for this power meter I decided to install it on a 105 chainset, because the driveside crank arm is vertically symmetrical. I don't know if this was the reason for the perceived increase of accuracy, that's above my pay-grade, but it's food for thought.
    Personally I think if you're in the market for a cheap power meter, just get a single-sided Chinese unit. (XCadey, Magene, etc.)

    Best wishes to all those affected by the WuHan Coronavirus. I'm 800km away from the epicenter, but there's over 100 cases in my province and most people are confining themselves to their house 24/7. The streets around my apartment are deserted and supermarket shelves are often cleared out as quickly as they're restocked. I'm keeping about 10 days of food in the house for the five people currently living here. While this is a dreadful situation for all those affected, and has the potential to affect millions more, I think it's also important to accept that somethings are out of your control, and aside from washing your hands and wearing a mask, it's best just to go on with your life and keep an interest in things that interest you. Don't just watch the news about the virus all day, take a break and watch some RUclips content unrelated to the virus. Anyway, any questions about life here with the virus lemme know. Oh, and any questions about the XCadey are welcome too! :D

    XCadey didn't reply to my data review/report sent on their 2XPOWER R8000... Time well wasted. I didn't bother with a video review.
    tldr; Same issues as every other R8000/R9100 RIGHT crank.
    Date: June 27th 2019 - June 28th 2019
    Unit Tested:
    Shimano R8000 Ultegra Crank Set (Hollowtech II / 172.5mm)
    ANT ID: 32670 R / 32670 L (Same ANT+ ID for both devices?)
    ANT Manufacturer ID: 666 (Unassigned ID. Company not registered with ANT?)
    ANT Model ID: 0
    Firmware: 17 / 170
    ANT Metrics: Power, Cadence, L/R Power, Pedal Smoothness, Torque Effectiveness.
    Bluetooth: Power (L+R), Cadence.... tested to Zwift IOS. Won't connect to Garmin Edge over BLE.
    Active Temperature Compensation: Unknown.
    Claimed Accuracy: -/+ 2%
    Observations:
    - IOS App crashes. Needs to be more robust.
    - Android App attempted to update the LEFT crank. App crashed leaving LEFT crank in DFU mode. Reset procedure worked.
    - Crank needed a dual-side reset prior to the Lama Lab Test. It was reading 50%-50% balance. Wouldn't show up in the XCadey app. USB Power charger placed on both cranks for 5 seconds. Removed. Problem resolved. 2XPower unit then started reporting L/R balance %.
    - USB Power charger needs careful placement on crankarms to stay connected. Especially on the right crank charge pod. Maybe a more inset design would resolve this.
    Lama Lab Test Data:
    analyze.dcrainmaker.com/#/public/a7a176eb-171f-4316-7493-7a12540cb3d5
    Tacx NEO suffering ANT+ drops in this session - can be ignored by selecting non-drop zones of data. The stand out observation is the 2XPower suffers from typical Shimano based low power readings on the RIGHT crank within ERG mode on a static indoor trainer. The LEFT power channel was within stated power accuracy tolerance.
    Power RIGHT Crank
    15.69W LOW @250W ERG (Not good. Consistent with all other Shimano RIGHT crank power meters)
    30W LOW @450W ERG (as above)
    LEFT Crank:
    2.28W LOW @250W ERG (-1.8% Excellent!)
    2W LOW @450W ERG (-0.88% Excellent!)
    - Cadence readings were good.
    Questions:
    Is the 2XPower ANT+ certified? The Manufacturer ID of "666" is not listed on thisisant.com
    Both LEFT and RIGHT appear to have the same ANT ID, or does only the LEFT broadcast ANT+? Is this by design? Can the crank be used as LEFT only, or RIGHT only, or are they hard-coded to be linked for use only as a DUAL sided power meter?
    Are the firmware engineers aware of the inherent issues with the asymmetry and coupling effect when using the Shimano four arm crankset (R8000/R91000/etc)? And how have they accounted for that in the firmware?
    How are the units calibrated? Statically or dynamically?
    Conclusions:
    The XCADEY 2XPower suffers greatly from known issues with using Shimano cranksets as a base for a power meter, in particular the RIGHT crank. The LEFT crank arm appears to report power within the specified power ranges. These issues are most apparent when using ERG mode on a static trainer.
    The mobile management apps need a little more work to ensure they don't crash. Power meter unit(s) also needing a reset to work correctly indicated issues with on-unit firmware robustness too.

      You're doing (the cycling) god's work. Have you put any 105 based right-hand cranks through the llama lab test. I know not a lot of companies put power meters on a 'low end' crankset, but maybe the symmetrical design gives it some advantages? I know this stuff haunts you, but it could be the closure you're after. :D

    • @angusvoo9863
      @angusvoo9863 4 года назад +2

      @@ChinaCycling The asymmetrical design of Shimano right crank is not depend on the model class of 105, ultegra or dura ace but rather the model generation. So 105 new model R7000 is asymmetrical right crank compare to the symmetrical in previous model (5800) you tested. You probably right about 105 (5800) do not suffer from low right power reading. I have Sigeyi Axpower on 105 5800 and it doesn't seem to suffer from low power reading on right side.

    • @ChinaCycling
      @ChinaCycling  4 года назад +1

      @@angusvoo9863 I think old generation ultegra (6800) was also asymmetrical, although it's subtle. The old 9000 Dura ace was definitely asymmetrical. But you're right, it's not as simple as 105 = symmetrical, because as you say, new 105 is also asymmetrical.

    Just one thing you've had the vennya bike for a while now do you still recommend this bike I found it a bit more pricier than say lightweight carbon bikes although they look like they have a very similar looking bike frame on their site anyway thanks there

    • @ChinaCycling
      @ChinaCycling  4 года назад

      In my opinion (and I'm just a guy on the internet) there's more to a carbon frame than just the weight. Maybe a $500 Chinese frame and a $1000 Chinese frame look the same, but may be very different. Or they may look different and perform the same. The things that really affect how a bike rides when it's new, and how it rides after 10,000km are pretty hard for most people to measure. However, sometimes, yes, it's exactly the same frame being sold with different paint jobs. Sometimes a factory will sell it's "B level" frames to other companies cheaper. So, they make 100 frames to the same standards, and then the bottom 20% (judged by weight, stiffness, finish, etc) get sold off to another brand. So... all in all it's super complicated. There are many super cheap good frames out there. But maybe you buy 10 frames and 1 is a dud. Now that I'm giving people advice, I tend to avoid those frames because the one guy who gets the dud is gonna be pissed and think I'm a liar. So yes, I still rate the Vanyar frame, because they seem to be pretty strict about quality control and if anything my preference in general is going towards more expensive Chinese frames. (Winspace, etc.)

It would have been sensible to test before updating the firmware, however, all that ultimately matters is post firmware update it is now accurate.

    I find the products of the company XCadey interesting from the Price point. However, with my last purchase I had to learn that if you have a problem with them, you should not expect a solution. For Europe there is currently no proper help from the manufacturer.
    Main problem is, as always, the quality assurance ex works. One can be lucky and everything fits or not. When I bought it, the electronics on the power meter were defective at the factory first. It was exchanged after months but against another series. There the charging cable plug had been produced wrong. So after 6 month no solution. But I would be happy if other customers would feel better.Mehr anzeigen Weniger anzeigen Antworten 1
