A ga ga ga ga. What a fun place! Would have no idea that they had all this remaining from the movie and it was still so entertaining. 💪 ⛵️ Love the photo re-creations. Seems like a snippet of being at Universal Studios.
Glad you enjoyed it! I did keep my eyes peeled for some spinach flavoured ice cream but it wasn't to be! Definitely a cool place to visit and I really enjoyed learning about the movie. Incredible to imagine Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall down there acting out there parts, history in the making!
@@MattWhitingsEurope lol. I think I'll take the wine flavor over the spinach flavor any day! Lol. It is great history especially being Robin's first big movie.
We were there a few years ago. Everything was sun bleached and looking completely untouch. Do they still show the original making of this film 😂 it was a good place for a visit
I'm not sure if they still show it but they definitely should. The history of this place is what I love the most. It's a shame they haven't retained at least some of the original set though.
I was looking forward to this video after seeing the sneak peak in the first of your Malta series. Like you, I visited this village when on a family holiday. Had no idea about so many of these things... like the breakwater. I LOVED seeing your recreated photos of the ones from 1987. I look forward to your Gozo video(s?) as it's somewhere I didn't make it to on my trip all those years ago!
It felt great to be back, especially after so much time! Incredible to think I'd walked up and down there as a kid - hope it brought back some good memories for you also. Yes I've got a few videos of my time in Gozo and Comino coming up, to be honest there was so much to see on Malta I nearly focused all my time on the main island but in the end I'm glad I didn't!
Hello, there's plenty of hotels on Malta itself and quite a few close to the Popeye Village at Anchor Bay. There's also lots to chose from on Gozo but none on Comino that I'm aware of.
Cool, it was a different park back then. In the 80's it would have been the remains of the movie set, not insides just the front panelling where they shot the outside scenes for the film. These days it feels like everything has been replaced.
Pretty amazing that so much of it is still in that good a shape after over 40 years. Although a lot of the buildings look like they're ready to collapse at any moment, they were actually build to look like that. Sweet Haven was supposed to look cartoonishly decrepit. I can't image how frustrating that had to be to the construction crews to be told "No! We don't want it to be straight! Make it crooked!"
Haha perhaps that's the perfect job for any trades-person - nobody would pick up on the botches, in fact they're encouraged! Seriously though, I'm certain that what's there now isn't the actually set built for the movie. I added some photos to the video that were taken back in the late 1980's and compared them to what's there now - the results show plenty of differences between the two. At some point (probably in the 1990's) the set was modified and updated into a theme park. I'm pretty sure that when I visited with my family in the late 1980's none of the 'buildings' had insides, they were all just facades like they were part of a backlot production.
@MattWhitingsEurope sadly no. I was only 4 at the time, I vaguely remember popeye village and going over to Gozo on a boat trip, It's actually pretty rare to meet some one who has visited popeye village but my wife also visited in the early 90's.
Yeah back then it was actually the remains of the movie set whereas these days its a theme park - hardly anything left of the original set. Incredible coincidence that your wife has also been there.
I have been to malta twice. And I liked it each time. Love the heat there. It gets so hot. I always get a good tan. I like the people there they friendly and just nice. Food is lovely too. Did u visit the three cities at all. We did. Had an amazing pizza there. The best we have ever tasted. Amazing. I really like malta. I love Valletta. It is beautiful Lovely city. Has a nice atmosphere and just calm. Even tho it is busy. It still beautiful.
Totally agree with everything you wrote - Malta is amazing and such a fascinating place. I personally loved the look of the landscape and the history blew my mind. It's a terrific island and although small is packed full of things to do and places to visit. I was there for a few and made quite a few videos including Valletta, the Three Cities, Gozo, Comino, the Blue Lagoon, the Blue Grotto, plenty of fishing villages, stunning beaches and limestone 😆. If you're interested you can see all of my Malta videos here --> bit.ly/mwt_Malta . Have a great day!
@@MattWhitingsEurope thanks. Not been to Malta for few years tho. My husband has this thing that when u been to one place in one country then u don't need to go again. We went to Malta twice though then he said we go elsewhere. But I like malta cos it quite familiar to me and I always look like I have been abroad when I been to Malta. Always get a great tan. If I was there for a monthI would be quite nicely tanned
The anniversary Of Robin William's death was just a couple of days ago. August 11, 2014. Really cool to see the movie set. Did not know it was filmed there. So many surprises in Malta!
It's crazy to think it was 7 years ago - unbelievable! So sad. Nearly a real coincidence with the timing, it certainly feels poignant for it to be so close. Yes it's amazing what you stumble across, these things do pop up in the most unlikely of places! Have you seen any of the movie?

There's a version with Robbie Williams and Shelly Duvell? Wicked shit, where can I see it?
Somewhere far far away, in a parallel universe... 😆
