That is actually a valid complaint about this mod! Even on the easiest difficulties it takes a hell of a lot work to drop enemies, who are not only bullet sponges but are sometimes hella fast, making them a down right chore to take down effectively! Especially with the starter weapons, like I've never seen a more underpowered shotgun in Doom than the one in this mod.
Necro, but I think the reason why he thinks it’s more Halo is because it does have a few sounds that we’re known from Halo A few being the melee swing, the melee hit on an enemy, the sniper rifle zoom sound, and the shield recharge sound But yeah it’s more Crysis and FEAR more than anything, if I’m correct, the super shotgun is the fear 2 shotgun
For anyone wondering, the BFG equivalent is a sniper rifle thing that has 5 shots in its magazine. But it can 4-shot a Cyberdemon. Also, that charged punch can 2-hit a Cyberdemon
haha, me too. i learned to save ammo since i played Resident Evil 2, so aways take a good aim in enemies to not run out of ammo and explore every corner for suplies. :)
You know people just jump to "Halo" automatically for anything meant to look peripherally like Halo whether it does or doesn't, right? There's an opposite that'll look any 2.5d shooter and compare it to Doom, whether it actually looks or sounds or plays like or has anything to do with Doom. It's just a product of an attempt at association existing alongside unfamiliarity . People do the same shit with so many different platformers if all they've ever played SMB/Sonic and maybe something that's only part platformer like a Castlevania.
And? I recognise the grenade and the plasma pistol thing from CE. The warp sound and the shield are there but both of those were preexisting sounds that have been floating around forever. One is just a few layered sine waves. I can't count how many times I've noticed the Predator's plasma caster sound used in various films since that film's release. Borrowing sounds (and images, as many of its assets I can recognise from other games) =/= "bang on the money". Then again, that was said by someone who considered a sort of vaguely USP looking handgun reminiscent of the magnum from Halo, which....yeah, no....that was a combination desert eagle/sniper rifle and had a very distinct, impractical shape that made marines look dumb holding it. The comparison to Crysis is a lot closer but still not even accurate. There have been multiple Doom mods that attempt to put Halo in Doom faithfully. This is not one of them. It has a Halo-esque HUD, mainly in color. I wouldn't belittle the mod of its own identity past that. It'd be like saying the Marathon trilogy is like Halo or something because of some aesthetic properties you'd obviously expect them to share even though the engine, gameplay mechanics and focus of the games are so drastically different.
Now that you mentioned halo, I can tell the modder used some of the gun sound effects from halo. The plasma rifles secondary fire almost sounds identical the the plasma pistol from halo CE.
I absolutely love this mod. While not as detailed as Brutal Doom (Shotgun testicles!!! XD) it's still a very satisfying mod. It forces you to play differently, and rewards you for doing so. It's fantastic.
Ah, this is the old, good, Halo style shield and health system. See, that's what most modern shooters seemed to forget was that the Halo energy shield was on top of a finite health pool. It was a means to allow players to have a more mobile play style, while still having weapons with fast projectiles and hitscans.
@@ikagura You differentiated between the two claiming CE did it better when they are functionally the same. Real FPS? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman
I don't think it's too fair to compare Project MSX to Brutal Doom, since both have different end goals really. Brutal Doom is all about taking standard Doom gameplay and amping it up to 11, while MSX is about frantic and difficult gameplay that requires you to keep your wits about you.
Project MSX is such a fun Doom weapon mod. You should just use the fists more if you want to save ammo, especially in E2M2 Containment Area, which is the map that the Berserk pack is known for. Also, when will you be reviewing Knee Deep In ZDoom?
I recognize a lot of sound effects in the mod from FEAR. Also yes you are correct the gun at 10:05 is the RP-50 Repeating Cannon from the first FEAR game. And it pretty much did the same thing in FEAR. Messed shit up. Love anyone who bring stuff in from that series.
Just want to point out that Project MSX has additional features in Doom II, most notably a Super Shotgun replacer - a four-gauge nail-shotgun that absolutely devastates whatever it hits. Also, you didn't show it, but the BFG replacement is a railgun/sniper rifle hybrid. It's extremely powerful to a single target, but (at least in my opinion), it feels a bit undewhelming for a BFG-slot weapon.
*TL;DR* - How about no? One basically has to sign off physics and the idea of 3D shooters in general which only the kind of jaded people who greentext outside of 4chan would do to make that statement functional since basic mechanics that have nothing to do with the player's health - usually the most commonly complained about regenerating function - are innately "automatically regenerating stats" in many, many, many engines that provide the backbone to first person shooters. There shouldn't be a choice about the level of intelligence employed. People too stupid to play an old FPS shouldn't be allowed to play a modern one either solely for the sake of lineage. Period. We don't even need to go back that far. If I boot up OpFor and a player can't figure out how to make it through the boot camp level because they are not informed how to crouch jump, they didn't do their homework and need to start again at the beginning until they get it right. The idea that any deviation from Doom's mechanics breaking away from perfect form is not even something id believed in themselves though, nor is it something any artist who's ever worked on or developed part of a shooter game that isn't a mod for Doom or some kind of Build engine game that I know believes in, it's only something rapid consumers of games that have no original ideas of their own ironically tend spout out with such toxicity. Not every game should play the same. That in mind, and assuming there's an actual explanation (i.e. regenerating shielding on top of health, which came long before modern games that employed invisible regenerating health and that stupid red screen bullshit in a number of different games), you have to have a *reason.* Something the the sandbox needs to be there to justify it. That's how game design should work, and it goes way further back than the FPS genre. Ever since the inception of difficulty levels, or more specifically the idea that a "hard" one could and should be achieved not by intelligence but rather by the change of some values that are not justified or explained any way, we've had en masse the kind of black/white games you mention. The sort of shit where something is hard for all the wrong reasons, like enemies respawning with knowledge of your exact location that throw more grenades than their animation actually permits (and yeah, I'm just jumping to Call of Duty there, though it can be applied to a lot). At that point, regeneration is rendered simultaneously redundant and the viable choice, because every aspect of the game's hard difficulty is "artificial", as people might put it. That said, the catalyst isn't regenerating [insert whatever here]. It's laziness and lack of creativity. It's entirely possible to employ regenerating mechanics in a shooter game and I know that because you see it done successfully in other types of game that does not exclude intelligence on part of the player. Unfortunately, the stigmatism related to it as well as the 10+ year long corporate-induced stagnation within the FPS genre mean developer's usually opt to go for whatever is easiest, which is the same logic behind "choose one" and both a criticism/weight that only prolongs the problem.
Project brutality seems to do health regeneration right. You can't just hide behind a corner for a few seconds and be back up to full, it takes time and you'll still have to push on even if you have only 20 health at the time. By the time you reach the next encounter you could be up to about 30, maybe 35, so you still have to be careful, and you'll still be hunting for health packs. It's just a little extra security that will help you survive the next encounter, provided you're not stupid and just standing in one spot unloading at whatever's in front of you.
If ammo scarcity is a problem in MSX, try using the special attacks more. The game is very generous with frag grenades, and a charged grenade can clear an entire room if you time it right. The charged punch can do the same thing, and I've gotten good results by punching the ground so that the blast wipes out everything.
The Concussion cannon from F.E.A.R.. Sadly it was only available near the end of the game, where it got little of use, atleast in the first F.E.A.R., never played the non-canon sequels tho.
Someone obviously played F.E.A.R. a lot. With that auto-shotgun FAMAS thing, your first person animations as well as the gun firing and its sound are all eerily similar to later Monolith design.

Huh. I actually really like E2M2: Containment Area. My favourite vanilla map I've played, noting that I haven't played Inferno, yet. I think it might be because it bares a closer resemblance to a real place than many other maps, and I grew up with Half-Life as well, or it could be the really cool moments I've had in the level. I dunno; I just find the difference in opinion and taste interesting.
I think if they're going for a halo mod they'd change the enemies to be more like the player as well, in Halo With most enemies you could just stay on one side of a room and pour bullets on them across a somewhat wait-ey timespan But there were the elites, they were always good at pressuring the player or forcing them to come up with a plan to kill them before the elites killed the player ...or just use the noob combo, fine whatever (This reminds me of when i first starting playing HR on PC MCC, and i completely forgot about the plasma pistol's charged fire so i'd just magdump my AR into them during the first mission)
Yo, Icarus. What's your opinion on auto-aim coupled with Free Look? I'm not sure whether to use completely manual aim or auto-aim, just thought it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on it. I've been using Freelook with auto-aim on UV difficulty on Ultimate Doom at the moment but have been thinking of disabling it for a more difficult yet less-accurate-to-the-original-gameplay experience.

that midi stuff is extremely slow downloading, like 100 byte/second, can you upload it to somewhere faster? like mediashare etc.
Anyone still here? I just got this mod and nothing works. Wtf? I have reload, throw grenades or, use weapon zoom. Am I missing something here?
This mod hasn't got updated in YEARS, apparently the author of the mod just disappeared without leaving any message. The mod is intended to work on GZDoom 1.8.0 i dont't know if it works on the current version cause i haven't tried the mod but i think it wont work as intended, but if you really wanted to play with this mod just load it with GZDoom 1.8.0
@@lmaoof303 thanks for the heads up. I'll try using 1.8 instead. It seems to work fine on the current version except that there's no way to reload, throw grenades or, zoom in. They're not in the menu or currently bound to any keys. I could probably just use the bind command but I don't know what the key commands are nor can I seem to find any sort of readme files x_x
@@tarrker I just downloaded the mod today and it seems to be working fine on the latest version of GZDoom (4.3.3) as for the reload and grenade keys you can find it in the customize controls option. I don't know why yours are missing maybe you should search for the options using the "Option Search" button in the setting
@@lmaoof303 thanks. I have searched for them. I don't know what's up but if it's working for you maybe I just need to reinstall or something.
@@lmaoof303 Thanks mate.
''It's too easy but I play on what ever difficulty I want'' wtf? ofc its too easy if you don't play a proper difficulty. Project MSX is WAY easier, everything kills in 1 shot, it doesn't feel like doom anymore
thats the point of weapons mods.
Try it on Maps of Chaos, and the difficulty on Easy. I'm having a very hard time.
I like playing Project Brutality with the Hell on Earth Starter Pack v21 .wad :I
Just drag the PB pk3 and the starter pack wad onto GZDoom or whatever. You'll get the maps on Project Brutality, which comes with classic Brutal Doom mode as well, in case you wanna just play it normal. Me likey
Those imps are scary and cool.
Get I'm insult rifle I'm gonna insult somebody
Charge modes sound effect is the halo plasma pistol
Why did it start on Deimos anomaly
0:20 also borderlands why do d you start in E2M1 Deimos anomaly imagine this + brutal doom
When I try to run it, says: Cannot find a game IWAD (doom.wad, doom2.wad, heretic.wad, etc.).
Did you install GZDoom properly? You can do either of the following:
1. Place one or more of these wads in the same directory as GZDoom.
2. Edit your gzdoom-username.ini and add the directories of your iwads
to the list beneath [IWADSearch.Directories]
Do you own doom or doom 2?
Logan Malone No, only GZDoom.
***** You need doom or doom 2 to run mods. (Sometimes you need specific ones, so id get doom and doom 2). They're usually 5-10 bucks on steam.
Understood. I thought it would be as easy to play as Brutal Doom.
@@tiiito1988 You can use Freedoom
I dunno; I just find the difference in opinion and taste interesting.
ım having rendering problems when ı take a hit . help :/
I think if they're going for a halo mod they'd change the enemies to be more like the player as well, in Halo
With most enemies you could just stay on one side of a room and pour bullets on them across a somewhat wait-ey timespan
But there were the elites, they were always good at pressuring the player or forcing them to come up with a plan to kill them before the elites killed the player
...or just use the noob combo, fine whatever
(This reminds me of when i first starting playing HR on PC MCC, and i completely forgot about the plasma pistol's charged fire so i'd just magdump my AR into them during the first mission)
That animation at 3:38 is smooth af
Could i just use Zandronum to run this mod?
Famas as a shotgun?
2:55 Iron Fist
Hey man, awesome vid, however i have a problem with this mod. I can't seem to be able to reload my weapons in this mod. Did you happen to run into this same problem, and if so,can u tell me any solutions? Thanks :D
4:16 , that's a magazine, not a clip.
Is that tasty plasma gun sprites over 200fps or it is a pretty well animated 3d model?
this mod gives me headaches... It's only 30% puppy fighting 70% cowering to recharge... I guess one has to get accostumed but i dont think it offers a good reason to playing for months.
Why don't you have the death camera option on in Doom anymore?
You mean the 3rd person death? I think it was disabled by default in the newer versions of GZDoom
No I mean that Icarus had death camera on before, but now has it off.
@@AlphaZeroX96 Oh right... maybe because he wanted to make the game looking like more vanilla?
I think it was set to off by default in the newer versions of GZDoom
Best ever has shutdown, is there an alternative download?
7 shells of shotgun to caco... clip + 3 with pistol hmmm...
There is another shotgun which is non-automatic that one-shots Cacodemons. It's extremely powerful but only holds 4 shells and requires manual loading, no magazine. The ammo is quite rare as well.
It says you need 1.8.0 to run this, but only 2.2.0 is available now. Does this mean it won't run?
It runs on my Gzdoom 3.3.0
The Auto Shotgun is a FAMAS Felin, btw.
+GoredonTheDestroyer Actually, it's a FAMAS G2
Corporal Bigglesworth Really?
GoredonTheDestroyer Actually, it isn't, my mistake. It's actually a fictional futuristic variant called the BRII
The midi music link is down. Can you please fix it
just google it
I don't know about Brutal Doom making it too easy. Then again, I play on Ultra-Violence, so what "too easy" is in Doom, i have no clue.
This on the other hand looks pretty easy, other than the severe lack of ammo, but that is why powerful melee exists.
I love this mod.
It certainly has some sounds taken from Halo.
how do you get that resolution? mine looks like its running in the software mode! any help?
purists think brutal doom is bad??? omg wait till they see this mod
Still because of the reloading and the chatty marines, not hating on brutal doom
In the States, it sounds like “Queens-berry”. I reckon your pronunciation is more accurate
why do old DOOM fanboys despise auto-regenerating properties so much?
He missed the bfg and you cant really say that brutal doom is easy if you dont turn the difficultly up and play it. It might seem easy but its not
