  • Captain explained to me how a Bombardier Dash 8 penetrates through storm clouds to avoid any surprises.
    Airline: SpiceJet
Aircraft: Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 (De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400)
    Flight: SG2944 (SG-2944)
    Aircraft Registration: VT-SQC (DH8D)
    Pune to Jaipur
I spoke with the captain after landing to ask why he had set max thrust to power up the engines as we were entering storm clouds. He explained to me that they have to do this in order to easily penetrate through clouds and avoid any unexpected surprises. He also said that the turbulence we felt, the aircraft can handle much worse but it depends what passengers can tolerate.
A Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft, like most commercial and regional airplanes, can penetrate through storm clouds by following standard operating procedures and relying on various systems and equipment to ensure safe navigation. Here's how it typically works:
    1. Weather Radar: The aircraft is equipped with weather radar that allows the flight crew to detect and visualize weather conditions, including storm clouds, precipitation, and turbulence. This radar helps the crew to identify and navigate around the most severe parts of a storm.
    2. Onboard Weather Information: The flight crew receives real-time weather information, including weather reports and forecasts, from air traffic control and meteorological sources. This information helps them plan their route to avoid severe weather whenever possible.
    3. Altitude Adjustments: The flight crew may adjust the aircraft's altitude to navigate through or above storm clouds. Typically, they try to find the smoothest path through the clouds to minimize turbulence and provide a more comfortable experience for passengers.
    4. Anti-Icing Systems: The Dash 8 is equipped with anti-icing systems to prevent the accumulation of ice on the aircraft's critical surfaces, such as wings, engines, and tail. These systems help maintain the aircraft's performance and prevent ice-related issues in turbulent or stormy conditions.
    5. Radar and Lightning Avoidance: Pilots also use their onboard radar and other equipment to detect and avoid severe turbulence, hail, and lightning within storm clouds. Lightning avoidance procedures are crucial to ensure the safety of the aircraft and its passengers.
    6. Communication with Air Traffic Control: The flight crew maintains constant communication with air traffic control (ATC) to receive real-time updates on weather conditions and to coordinate their route, altitude adjustments, and any necessary deviations to avoid severe storms.
    7. Flight Planning: Before a flight, the airline's dispatch team and flight crew carefully plan the route, considering weather conditions and forecasts to avoid the most severe storms. This planning often includes diversions or alternative routes if conditions change en route.
    8. Pilot Training: Dash 8 pilots undergo extensive training on how to handle various weather-related situations, including storm penetration and avoidance. This training ensures they have the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions in challenging weather conditions.
It's essential to note that while modern aircraft like the Bombardier Dash 8 are well-equipped to handle various weather conditions, the primary goal is always the safety of the passengers and crew. Pilots will do their best to avoid flying through severe storms when possible, but when it's necessary, they rely on their training and equipment to navigate safely through the clouds.

1:04 it looks like the propellers are stuck! What an awesome view of the 3D clouds and the power of these engines.

Nice observation! The Dash 8's propellers may seem still due to the camera frame rate, but they're actually working hard to navigate through those intense storm clouds.

3:11 and again in here it looks like the propellers are just vibrating and not moving at all. Excellent views after coming out of the clouds.

Great observation! The effect you noticed might be the result of the camera's frame rate syncing with the propeller speed, creating a unique visual. Glad you enjoyed the views after the storm clouds - nature's beauty at its finest!

1:34 that’s a heavy rainfall where that rainbow is. It’s probably pouring down there.
