It's not even a debate. United fans these days (especially some of these social media platforms) have some short-term memories.
Some of the threads you see of Twitter are absolutely embarrassing. So one-sided. They wanna show every mistake from a 12yr career and just gloss over everything good he has done. These younger supporters (social media heads) act like Sir Alex's winning teams were filled with world-class players 1-11.
Compared to the modern-day game, fans like Cam wouldn't put Bruce, Pallister, Wes Brown, Irwin, Butt, with Legend status. To say RVP is a legend just diminishes your whole argument. This video is clearly from a bias viewpoint.
We've had our worst finishes since Sir Alex retired, during the Moyes, LVG and Mourinho era, we were embarrassing - do you know how much more embarrassing it could have been if he didn't save us and win us games. We we lucky we finished in the top 10 that to De Gea.
It's funny how when a keeper just saves the ball, "he's doing his job" and the clean sheet record is largely down to the defence. However, you're not blaming that same defence for 5-0, 4-0, 7-3 defeats. Cmon Cam, you're supposed to be one of the more knowledgeable fans, I won't even mention your mispronounciation of some names.
I can't argue with people who say it's probably time for a change, but the disrespect has been appalling.

I think he's at a lower level of legendary status but while i would've loved him to stay on for a season and help whoever we get in transition into the role if they're quite young, I think it's best he moves on. The timing is perfect. Unlike what his obsessives may say I don't think even his shotstopping cannot be replaced. People think that if we get a keeper who's much better on the ball, they'll automatically be a poor shotstopper (won't be surprised if that comes up somehow when a new guy comes in). Wish he'd get a better send off, though.

This is the thing, people start to act disingenuous when they want to prove a point or get their side of the argument across. De Gea has no doubt made "match winning saves." When outfield players "fail to do their job", a defender misplaces a pass, a striker misses a 1 v 1 and DDG is the only player that keeps us in games by keeping out the opposition time and time again.
Not by making ordinary saves btw, we're talking worldies, with his hands or feet. When we're left asking"how did he save that. Let's not try rewrite history of DDG's United career.

On the one, there was a 4 - 5 year period or so where he single handedly kept us in contention for European spots, winning the Sir Matt Busby 4 times in that period and winning a 5th one a few years later. On the other hand, he’s never really been a leader nor does he have the trophy haul that other legends at the club have. He has also been as poor now as he has been good for us.
I’m sitting on the fence, but if I had to pick one I’d probably say no. The legend title gets thrown around too often anyways. Fan favorite and cult hero for sure, but not a legend. By your logic Bryan Robson isn't a legend as he barely won anything during his time as the main man in the 80s apart from 2 FA Cups. By the time we won 2 EPL, he was washed. Robson was still considered a legend as he carried the club during its darkest era. Just like DDG carried the club during the club darkest era in the EPL. Record gk appearence, clean sheets, 4x player of the year. He played for 12 seasons as our no.1, the last key player since the SAF era. He done too much to not be called a club legend. If you call RVN a legend for just being a key man for EPL for one season (a title we won a bunch before he came) then DDG is easily a legend.
If you say his bad end cancels all his highs to be a legend then I can I say that CR7 is not a legend of the club after the way he left in such a poor way. De gea was an elite shot stopper but my point is cause of the type of keeper he is, his strength as a shot stopper stands out when our defence was poor or we used to concede a lot of shots. United fans used to praise his cause he used to be top 5 in the save stats but you hardly see top keepers in them stats.
His shot stopping has declined since 2019, he has been making more mistakes.
As a keeper his concentration level are poor and we all know how he struggles to command his area and set pieces.

    • @maxabah7904
      @maxabah7904 Год назад

@@dib9412 The argument that he was in the top 5 save stats kinda helps his argument. Our defense was so shambolic yet he always kept us within the top 4 fights. Do you understand how insane that is for a GK to have that effect? And the szn in which Mourinho left, was the start of DDG's decline and I agree, he hasn't been at the level for a bit now. Maybe during 19/20 szn and the 21/22 szn he was good, but apart from that, he hasn't been at the level.
And with set pieces, while it has always been a weakness, every GK has a weakness. Every GK before 2018 was god awful at sweeping and distribution bar Victor Valdes, Ter Stegen and Neuer, and only one before being Van Der Sar. And we praise him now as being one of the GOAT GKs, but Van der Sar was pushed out of Juve for Buffon due to his perceived "nonchalant" demeanor. He ended up playing at Fulham for 4 years. Putting that criteria of saying he should be elite at 4 of 5 areas of goalkeeping, when essentially 2 weren't essential to goalkeeping within world football is unfair.
Yes, his shot stopping's declined, and he hasn't been at the level need for 4 years now, but from 2012-2018, bar Neuer, IMO, there wasn't a better GK on the planet, and I'd argue from 2016-2018, he was the best no exception. He hasn't always been this this bad at cross stopping, his ability has waned. Even his ball playing, when he arrived that was identified as one of his strengths. I genuinely believe those parts of his game has deteriorated due to a loss of confidence.
And the PFA TOTY, playing in midfield it was harder to get in. Scholes got in twice. In comparison, Lampard only made it 3 times. It's harder to quantify how good you are and you fit you in to a team, especially as a midfielder, where there are different profiles, and the more slept on profiles in the English game like a deep lying playmaker will often get overshone by more dynamic players, like Gerrard. With GKs however, its different. Its about who has been the best GK, plain and simple. There's no worrying about fitting profiles where and all that. It's who's been the best GK in the league and for 5 szns, with 4 consecutively, it was without a doubt that De Gea was the best GK not only in the league but at least top 3 itw.
Has he been poor over the last few years, yes. No one with a set of eyes should argue that. Saying that he shouldn't be in the top 5 save stats when he had to is disingenuous. He has been a great servant, and he needs to leave. In my books, maybe he's a legend on the level of Van Der Sar or Carrick

He is a Manchester United legend. However comparing him to VDS is unfair seeing as he's one of the greatest keepers of all time. You have to look at the situation he was in. On top of that he's been the single standout player for Manchester United, someone you could depend on. Yeah he wanted to leave for Real Madrid, but it didn't end up happening. And he ended the season as the 2015/16 golden glove winner with a shambolic defense.

I think his last couple of years really put a sour taste in the mouth.
If he had left in 2018 when Madrid wanted him he'd have been a legend in way more people's eyes. Overall I'd give him the nod just.
