C.P.E. Bach: Cello Concerto in A Minor Wq 170; William Skeen & Voices of Music, original instruments

- The opening Allegro Assai from Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Concerto in A minor, Wq.170, presented in celebration of his 300th anniversary. Performed on original instruments by the Early Music ensemble Voices of Music, William Skeen, soloist; 4K UHD video from our Virtuoso Concertos concert, November, 2014.
C.P.E. Bach transformed the musical language at the end of the Baroque, and as part of this process he also elevated the role of the cello, so that as a solo instrument it became the equal of the keyboard, violin and flute. This new balance is represented by the presentation of Bach’s concertos in multiple forms: the solo parts for the cello concertos were also arranged for harpsichord and flute. Although it is tempting to speculate that the cello versions were composed first, or specifically with the cello in mind, it is also quite possible that Carl Philipp could, first of all, handle the composition of three versions simultaneously, and, second, that he, like his father, was accomplished on a variety of instruments but was primarily a keyboard player. Nonetheless, the rich textures and compelling virtuosity of the concertos for cello make a persuasive case that the Carl Philipp--who occasionally cut a few compositional corners for lesser commissions--invested his best efforts in these concertos, which show a composer willing and able to emerge from the shadow of his extraordinary father, J.S. Bach.
Performing parts based on the critical edition Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: The Complete Works (www.cpebach.org) were graciously made available by the publisher,
the Packard Humanities Institute of Los Altos, California.

It's not good. It's PERFECT!!! You are astonishing musicians!
CPE was a underated composer that deserved more credit
Very true!
I really appreciate the combination of the cello soloist's simple and no-nonsense phrasing along with his intricate and detailed approach to articulation.
Bloody oath they were an amazing family. A dynamic, articulate and convincing performance.
I remember the first time I heard baroque period instruments. I never looked back. Thanks so much.
Beautiful music of great virtuosity and remarkable skill. The joy of music through the ages; lives here right now!
Outstanding......I could listen to your performances all day for a year, or two , or three.....
Great musicians completely dedicated to the music. Here the music and the composers are treated with deep respect. Serve your work as an example for the generations to come.
Voices of Music is sensational!
This video made me like C.P.E. Bach. Thank you for this stunning performance from the soloist and the group.
Our pleasure!
C.P.E. Bach is a wonderfull composer :D
Great tempo and the resonant acoustic adds to the performance's excitement. Very well done.
...the resonant acoustic, is beautifull
Please keep sharing the best music in human history!
Greetings from Chile :)
The warm rich sound is exhilarating!
Wow, the swift tempo had quite the drive to it! Loved the excitement it brought. Great playing as always.
If I had to pick my favourite 20 classical works this would be on the list
I admire the old Bach also, but the more I listen to his son, Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach, I must say that He is sitting next to his father in the hall of musical phenomenons, in his own right. He is the most overshadowed musical genious by a giant father that ever lived. People must know how great He was. The sheer beauty of his melodies had a great impact on a guy called Mozart.

Great comment; it’s good that people can still connect to CPE’s very personal, original and quirky sound.
However, ‘...impact on Mozart’?
You are completely mistaken; not a single note of CPE sounds remotely like Mozart, and vice-versa - it’s difficult to find any two contemporary composers with so little in common!
Great appreciation! But, the influence on Mozart was of Joahnn Christian Bach! Carl Phillip Emmanuel was held in high steem by Haydn and Brahms!!!
it is deffinitfly no Mozart, it is a own syle!
When Mozart was 8 or so, he spent time in London with Johann Christian Bach and they spent time together playing and studying music. Later in Mozart's life, a friend of his brought a copy of Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, possibly the Art of Fugue, and multiple of his motets. Mozart commented "Now there is music from which a man can learn something".
However Carl Phillip was a very popular composed during his time, so it's possible Mozart has seen some of his scores, but I don't know of or remember any sources detailing this.
❤
The best interpretation!
:)
I love this composition and this performance is outstanding!
as a cellist starting my journey in the world of barroque cello i'm speechless

Gratitude to you for the Musicians and their instruments and this registration. "Comme ils "s'entendent", if one can express oneself thus, wonderfully.
What an energy and attention to play Carl. P.E. Bach+Voices of Music
Oh My: Listen to this gemstone of a rendition / recording often. Some of the very best of the best (to date?) Mr. Skeen on the front end with Tanya Tomkins providing just about the best support one might even hope to hear. Nuff said.
I'm sharing this with all my friends, It's amazing!
It's amazing. Full of beauty... Thank you!

best version yet!!!
This is such a polished rendition. Such fabulous instruments as well.
Do you know what the instruments are
@@henrymichael7675 She must have believed the certification of the Voices of Music. But when the latter regularly releases recordings with great musicians such as Amanda Forsyth, Thomas Cooley et al do we need to disbelieve them.
together, they are divine
Many many thanks for your skill and dedication, beautiful, and then some , well done---!
You are very welcome!
A beautifully rich wholsesome performance that incited a sense of holistic awe from the collective virtuosity! 👏👏👏😀👍

The attack here is crisp. I can't get enough of this performance.
Stunning visually and musically. Thanks and a happy new year to all of you.
John Woodman Thanks, John! And to you as well.
superb beautiful
I am learning this right now, and while it isn’t the most difficult piece, I truly admire the soloist’s trills; they are so clean!
Love how they perform with such passion.
I am so happy you recorded this piece. At the concert (at Mary Magdalen) I thought he was playing too soft for me to hear it. But I believe now I was sitting in a poor-listening spot! This is quite a difficult piece and Bill is playing at the top of his technical and interpretive form.
What an amazing performance! Goosebumps all the way...
Simply awesome!
I love this music , it's the Bach effect on me , I don't have the words to describe it
Fantástico
Thanks for posting this! We attended your Berkeley concert and really enjoyed the performance; it's great to get to see this again. Hope you'll post the other movements as well!

減り張りの効いた、躍動感溢れる素晴らしいパフォーマンスに、感銘です。👏👏‼
"The rage of the light caught in the darkness, as its multi personality complex disorder bangs against the prison walls of its solitude, as the individual has to, eventually, return to a semblance of normality if it wants to remain a part of society". The acoustics and minimalism of the ensemble are engrossing. Merci, aux musiciens.

A stirring, inspiring performance, congratulations!
Thank you very much!
¡Muy buen concierto! Tenía que ser un BACH!!! Me gusta mucho que de fondo esté la imagen de Jesús y una Cruz, señal de nuestra cultura occidental
szép volt
it Rocks me
I just don't understand: Why such a great band only gets less than 2k views? Do Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus have better music than Bach?
vonAdieux We do get 3.5 million views per year--not as many as a rock star, but pretty good!
Voices of Music
That's pretty good! I wish some day I could visit Northern CA and your church over there.
+Jay Preis I guess you could technically say "Bach" to adress CPE Bach too. :)
But most of the time you would assume that they mean JS Bach when they just write "Bach" as you point out!
+Jay Preis I'm not so sure it was as you say, because the general public is not accustomed to hearing this kind of music that sounds "old". In fact, fragments of classical pieces are sometimes used in blockbuster movies, which doesn't turn them in "popular hits". I think the key is in the education of musical hearing, which should start early well in school, be of quality, adequately resourced and we should give it the importance that deserves, not in vain music is one of the most important arts. In this sense, the work of Voices of Music is commendable.
Obviously popularity is only as good as the masses, lol. To get that kind of recognition you'd have to dress the musicians up in trendy clothes and hire backup dancers. No thanks!
Beautiful music in a beautiful church , what more can anyone say :) :) Bach rules !!!!!
Caeleb.
Oh :) Still think its awesome :) Thanks.
Great.
Very beautiful
Thank you!
Das ist sensationell!
Danke vielmals.
Ever recording in 432Hz... Wonderful job..!
I can't wait to play this concerto!
It's an amazing concerto.
Agreed.
Bravooooooo! superba!
Wow
It's impressive you have assembled such consistently good ensembles. Your energy and tempi are inspiring, I can't stop listening to your recordings. Again, thanks so much, you bring joy to my life. Did you know Bruce Brown when you were at Berkeley? I enjoyed studying with him at USC.
Of course! Bruce is the best.
