Also, for ease of switching. Just create a new shortcut or just copy the existing Steam shortcut. Rename it to something like "Steam (New UI)". Then add the additional parameter like in the video. This way, you have two ways of launching Steam. One is to launch the normal mode, and the other one launches with the new UI.
The top tips are always in the comments
I was about to comment with this. If multiple people use the computer and they like to game you can add the new shortcut to C:\Users\Public\Desktop (Public Desktop is a hidden folder). That makes it so no matter who logs in can access the shortcut and try out the new UI mode.
Big brain moves
Can even change the shortcut icon on Windows to further distinguish them.
That's actually what I was about to comment. You can even go further by changing the icon to something else so you can tell them apart.
Quick tip, if you make chrome shortcuts to websites like vrv or netflix and then add those shortcuts as a non-steam game. You can use full steam input support on those websites and play them like an app. For example i have volume up and down on the d pad up and down, left arrow right arrow on the d pad left and right (for scrubbing/skipping through videos). You can even set the left bumper as gyro and and off and then set the gyro to mouse input, right bumper pulls up the virtual keyboard. Its actually life changing for me.
i use a steam controller and just have steam open in the background then set up the desktop controller config in steam to suit my needs.. but your way works better for this game mode for sure
What about Firefox shortcuts?
Thanks a million! Super easy and super helpful. You are crushing it brother.
If you set that shortcut as your default shell, you'll be able to directly boot into gamepad ui
Can you teach us how
Nice idea
OMG I waited this for so long, thank you for the video, the Steam Deck UI is the most beautiful dashboard, I really like it on PC!!
FINALLY this is what I've been waiting so long for.
That's awesome. Going to give this a try later today.
This will be great to try out on my arcade machine. The big picture mode UI is rather clunky on that.
Thanks for showing us that. I didn't know about GamePad UI. I was just knowledgeable about Big Picture, and I Love it.
The new steam deck ui is so cool, but i really hope that the developers will add the ability to open browser or even watch youtube or streaming service on game mode
Actually I don’t want big picture gone, no matter how outdated it is. But the choice in the settings which ui to use would be very nice, for example I would like to use big picture on my stationary console-pc and new ui on my windows tablet with touchscreen support.
By the way, thank you for the great video
agreed
I got this on my gaming system along with LaunchBox now. I'd say my gaming setup for 2023 is set. Thanks ETA u always on the money
I hope we get that new performance monitor that Steam Deck has. I also hope we get a built-in browser. Those 2 features were the ones I was actually looking forward to the most
Muchas gracias, funciona perfecto!!
This is fantastic cant wait to use this, now if we could find a way to boot directly into emulation without going into retroarch and back to steam without the need to ever use a keyboard and mouse....
You can install anything you want and boot straight into it. If you prefer having both Steam OS and another emulation frontend installed, then you just have to hold volume down and press the power button to get your boot manager. No keyboard or mouse required.
This is awesome! Makes pc feel like a console! This is what I'm talking about 👍
same i love this when im gaming i want my pc to look and feel like a console but for everything else i want it to just act like a pc if that makes sense
@@Platinum199 Best of both worlds
Great video, now is possible to turn powerful itx machines into a 4K gaming console & media centre with this new ui 👍🏻
Finally. This will now be my preference for using steam.
3:24 It is super easy to do. I mean just downloading and just renaming! No extra settings to tweak or something. Really awesome.
It's funny how big picture mode still has "The Steam Controller Update" when you open it which was for a device that was discontinued in 2019. Alright I'm trying this out!!
No,
I think it's coming back it makes more sense since they released a dock.
Still missing some big picture stuff, like closing big picture mode and going back to desktop mode without closing steam.
Switched asap, this is going to be so much better for my 'arcade'. ^^
This is cool. I’ve been playing Steam games on my Linux box. Performance is better than on my Windows rig. I use Linux Mint, btw.
I like the old big picture
This is amazing, Now I can stop trying to figure out how to launch the steam deck ui in full screen the old way. Can't wait for this to be added to big picture mode so I can turn my pc off from within steam!
Cool. Looks good.
I intend to update and switch to the steam deck interface. It looks great
ok , i tried it, i love it. smooth as hell. it has some issues still such like the Ui in the store you can't see everything, i am zoomed in on my pc tho using 125% not sure if that is affecting anything in there UI but its something i noticed. maybe it works better with a controller as i was using just my keyboard and mouse
dude this is awesome
Get in touch with me in respect of the above number for a reward conversation ok
ever since this video it have updated so much the beta version of steam updates multiple times a day lol
this is like having my steam deck with having the stream deck problems hehe
Nice! And Gamepad UI support 21:9 resolution which is much better than Big Picture Mode

This is awesome! please can you now do a tutorial for putting Windows on the Steam Deck? or at least pros/cons of both? Thanks again matey! :)
Its pretty easy and i highly recommend it. Ive been running windows 10 on steam deck for awhile and its great. you can install it just link any other os if you plan on just running windows 10. duel boot has more steps but not hard.
Will this new gamepadui improves generic controller detection?? As always amazing video Mr. ETA
I still prefer big picture because the home screen has some options instead of just showing games but the new settings are good, I hope they make the controller configuration the same
The new UI is so much better imo. It has a working shop, community tab and offers almost everything a console ui does. The old big picture mode had many problems and functions not working porperly (like the shop for example)
@@nikitos3558 the shop works and isn't a slow web page like steamos
Finally something good for gaming on HTPCs
I just made another shortcut that i use for gamepad ui. Just makes things easier to open it the way I need without having to edit it.
I gotta say, i love the new Big Picture UI so much. And i'm try it right now. It's an Steam Deck UI, yes i know. But it is totally better than the last Big Picture UI i try. The new Big Picture UI based on Steam Deck UI could be my favorite of all time. 😃 👍
Looks cool. I couldn't get steam os to work maybe this will work better
Honestly my biggest complaint with "big picture" mode was how laggy it was, it was unbearable.
It's dog turds. It's even worse than Big Picture mode.
Never had any lag with it
I find the new UI more laggy. Some of us have potato PCs we still use for emulation and lighter gaming and it's killing performance.
@@ccricers I would say that's understandable for sure although both run fine for me but I do see more lag at times with the new big picture mode compared to the old but I think it's due to being in beta and will be smoothed out.
@@ccricers which is why it’s in beta
Dope thanx
This has been around for a while. I though they finally made it official :)
If I had a computer that was completely dedicated to gaming, then this would interest me. As it is now, I currently don't even use big picture mode.
thank you
im not really a fan of the oversimplifying but it still looks sick i hope they add more features
i go try dis!
nice video 👍
I've already done this on my dual boot Deck and have set up task scheduler to switch when one closes
Super cool
this has been around for a while i thought cuz i did this before it was added to the beta channel
A decade later we finally get the Steam Machine wooo!
Get in touch with me in respect of the above number for a reward conversation ok
and they did the switch to the new big picture mode a couple days ago. I'm using the old big picture because they don't have a way to add artwork to the new big picture mode and that's a deal breaker for me. I hope they fix this soon
As of December 23, you can just type "-gamepadui" in the Properties without having to switch to Beta. It just works. Very happy with the new UI.
My problem with this is the huge icons like in the old UI. I prefer them smaller, but Valve thinks everyone needs huge icons.
i hope this does replaces big picture mode i barrly use it use it as well it needs a makeover
looks better than Microsoft windows 11 game thing.
There’s a W11 game thing?
Xbox gamebar?
this may get me to put windows on my steam deck
I really hope they improve the steam input ui, that's the only thing that was better with the old big picture mode.
I love this
Does it go into this mode using steam link? I sometimes use the steam link app on my Nvidia Shield
One issue I found in the beta is when the pc goes to sleep steam and then wakes up again it doesn't reconnect online properly even though windows does and it requires a full steam exit and reopen, though I hope they can fix it for the next release
Can you show us how to set this steam UI as a shortcut as ones default shell, so one is able able to directly boot into the gamepad ui ?
I don't think you have to do that anymore because I just enable Beta participation and after I did the update, I just click on the big picture mode icon and it automatically took me to the new UI
I tried this on a Steam Deck with Windows running on it and it basically gets rid of all the compromises of running Windows on it instead of SteamOS. It even knows it's on a Deck and detects the serial number.
Nice this is gonna be a cool update big picture mode is old its good valve is updating steam and add better features
The only complain I have is with the Steam Controller. Whenever I use the keyboard in the controller it just feels like I have to re-learn everything because it is so different to the previous Big Picture mode and it just doesn't look nice that a keyboard takes half the screen when typing, when in the other hand you can have the floating keyboard in a smaller size.
What was that intro? 🤣 Take your time!
It is possible that the Xbox One S controller may not work correctly via Bluetooth on the new Big Picture. Need to update controller firmware with USB cable in "xbox accessories app" menu. After these steps, the control will work correctly, including the central button and other functions.
This is pretty cool but I have never felt the need to turn my rig into something like a console which is what I have thought is the only utility of this ever since I first saw it years and years ago. Thank god they let you quit out of big picture mode/whatever they call this whilst in a game, though, that's a very welcome change.
I saw you use Thinkbook 14. Is it running emulation switch and Wii U good? Thank
seems like bringing up the overlay in game still doesn't work. but it's a step in the right direction and i'm excited for this to fully replace big picture mode!
update: now the overlay seems to work in game and i'm not sure what i changed lmao
How did you get the overlay to work?
you sound like sheldon from big bang theory
are you guys having the same issue where A and B buttons are swapped?
Was the old big picture mode really that outdated? I had no problems with it personally, but I don't mind checking this one out when it hits wider release outside Beta.
I had problems with big picture mode on the Gnome desktop where it wouldn't fullscreen properly, so it did have some bugs.
Yeah, it scaled horribly at 4K on Windows default settings, you couldn't see collections, and frankly Steam Deck's UI is just more intuitive than Big Picture was.
💯
I've been trying to use this since the video came out but it seems it thinks space bar is constantly being pressed. No issues in desktop, big picture, playnite or anything but when I use gamemodeui it has space bar being pressed
Well it worked for a few days, but now it just opens in the normal window. All the settings are set up the same, but it just won't go to the gamepad ui anymore...
The new UI update broke launching 3rd party apps through steam. It’s ruined my living room pc that I used to be able to use just like a console
Have they added music yet? If they replace big picture we'll lose access to being able to easily start audio files while In game.
If I make this change on my main pc and stream to Retropie on a Pi 3B that is running SteamLink w/big picture, will this work? Will it show the new UI? I am tempted to try but afraid it could mess something up. Thoughts?
I'm having this issue when I launch a non steam game in steamdeck Ui, the game launches in the background while the steam loading screen is stuck at the foreground. Anybody experienced this? And any fix? Would really love to use the Ui on my tv
Can this work with the Steamdeck running Windows 11 with all the shortcut buttons pulling up quick menu? This would resolve the biggest issue with W11 not being handheld friendly on the deck.
Get in touch with me in respect of the above number for a reward conversation ok
It looks great but the screen kept going black on my steam Deck whenever Call of Duty had to restart. I need to learn how to call task manager on this thing
I'm having a little bit of trouble navigating the menu because their's no guide button on my 360 controller and the button that should do it brings up the windows game bar?
Couldn't get it work on my PC. It's just keeps booting to the regular UI
Can you switch from big picture mode to gamepadui when game streaming to the nvidia shield?
How do I go back? Is there enable old big picture mod? I never did anything to update it to the new one
I dont see it and i am in canada i opted to steam beta like said in this video.
How do you open the settings tab (right tab) with mouse + keyboard?
One step closer to making my own OS for my Steamdeck. I'm curious if TDP would work on the Steamdeck, but not with SteamOS (Fedora, or vanilla Arch)
y tho
@@Ishin69 I use my deck as my main desktop. Having to work around Valve's immutable file system is a bit of a pain.
😍
Does anyone know how to properly load the game pad configuration on steam deck in gamepad UI under windows? It works perfectly in big picture mode, but in gamepad UI the layout is not being loaded.
Does anyone know how to do this in Linux? I gave it a shot but failed.
My problem is, with the new UI I can't figure out how to search in the workshops.
Which makes it really hard to find specific things.
Anyone know how to search with this new UI?
How do you open the settings overlay if you're not using a controller? Ie. OneXPlayer doesn't have dedicated home button
I loaded this to an older pc but it just keeps reverting back to Big Picture mode.
My specs:
HP Compaq Pro 6305
AMD A8-5500b with HD Radeon 7650d graphics
Vampire survivors maybe the best $4 I've spent in a long time.
everytime i hit the home button ont he controller the xbox gamebar for windows comes out not the steam new overlay
Will Mac receive this update in the future?
Only ui, huh, ? (( We will wait official steam os!! XD
