In addition to if Spain were in the triple entente, since the king of Spain also has the title of king of Jerusalem, if they defeated the Ottomans in the subsequent peace treaty, Spain would surely claim the territories of current Israel and Palestine under a protectorate. of Jerusalem or a captaincy general of Jerusalem. Not to mention that Spain made attempts to conquer Cambodia and Brunei so possibly these were replicated and came to fruition. Furthermore, Spain would surely remain the main world power, but one of the clearest things is that Morocco would surely be a completely Spanish protectorate, not like in our reality, which was divided between Spain and France, it would have a greater presence in the Pacific, surely forming a Viceroyalty of Indonesia (it should be noted that this would not be composed of all of Indonesia but the Philippines, the island of Brunei and surrounding islands in addition to its Pacific islands) this viceroyalty can also have the name of Viceroyalty of the Philippines, Brunei or the East Indies, Surely it would be given more possessions in the distribution of Africa, possibly predominating the aforementioned Morocco, a larger region for Spanish Guinea in the Gulf of Guinea, surely Tunisia due to Spanish attempts in the past during the beginnings of its empire, possibly some concessions. In East Africa, the most likely small size or the island of Madagascar to have an interconnection between its American, European, African and Asian territories. The relationship between Spain and France would not be entirely positive, mainly because France has a territory known as Perpignan or Roussillon that previously belonged to Spain and also having Napoleon third in power, assuming what happens as in our reality, that relationship would not be positive at all. less in the short-medium term and it would be more pro-Prussian in the Franco-Prussian war due to the fact that Spain has territorial claims against France, in addition to the fact that France would not be important as in our reality it is surely between the third and fourth world powers. Spain's greatest enemy at this point would be the British Empire since in our reality it encouraged the independence rebellions and that tells us that they would try it in this other one but failing in the fact in addition to the fact that then it would be more difficult for the British to consolidate their power starting with a great disadvantage in resources with the Spanish Empire, it is most likely that industrialization could occur in the British Empire but Spain would take little time to catch up so possibly the British Empire would be much less important or powerful in this reality. Parallel, remaining as the second world power, remaining as the rival of Spain as a step in our reality between the French and the British until the arrival of the Germans, now I could not tell you if this, in the case of this reality, would calm the Spanish-British rivalry or inflame it more by putting the Spaniards on the German side I think that it is 50% yes, 50% no, that would be very variable political frameworks due to the already historical and existing triple rivalry between the Spanish, British and French empires, something that I am clear about is that the British would have control of India and they would be given quite a few concessions in Africa but surely not as many as in our reality. Another thing that would change are the opium wars in which Spain would surely be more involved than it was in our reality because it would be beneficial to have the Chinese market open, with the Philippines as the main trading point in the East. Another change would be the opening of Japan. abroad, since the Americans did not have much control of the Pacific, this imposition of the USA towards Japan to open itself to the world would surely not have been given, although it is most likely that another nation would have done so, possibly the British Empire, the French Empire or Spain itself, but There is also the possibility that this did not happen and Japan did not have the rapid industrialization it had and the Japanese empire was not formed and finally it is the annexation of Hawaii to the USA. It is most likely that they would remain independent like the Hawaiian Kingdom or they would be annexed. as protectorate by the British Empire or the Spanish Empire. Now around the First World War and consequently the Second and the Russian Revolution, things would not be chlorine as they could be due to what has already been mentioned in the existence and possibilities of Spain's relations with both Germany, the British Empire, France, Austria. Hungary, Italy... From my point of view these would be the most likely scenarios if the Spanish Empire did not collapse.

They were already in decline by the 1800's. They were an irrelevant power.
They spent too much time, money and manpower fighting dumb religious wars.
They got a lot of land in Europe due to inheritance.
But their Religious Intolerance, basically made them lose it all.
Had they not been intolerant religious zealots and tried to enforce trade policies that only benefited the crow, the Dutch would have never revolted.
They didn't revolt against Burgundy for almost 250 years. But the moment the Spanish inherited Burgundy it all went to hell, because they tried to force religion and trade policy on the Dutch.
That War triggered the whole Religious Wars that would go on for almost 100 years.

    some mistakes to adress:
Santo Domingo (now the Dominican Republic) remained a part of spain after the independence of the colonies, as well as several archipelagos in oceania.
In the 1790 map you forgot to add some of the spanish enclaves in Africa.
the three liberal years were not a civil war but a turbulent period of liberal rule. only in late 1822 did the absolutists (better nown as royalists or "partidas realistas") start organised resistance in northern catalonia.
the intervention in 1823 was done against the more radical liberals (the Veinteañistas) who were still monarquists. the republicans were a very minor faction back then.
Catalonian and vasque independentisms weren't a cause of the fall of the empire, but rather a consecuence. vasque regionalism was born after the third carlist war (1876) by vasque conservatives that were against the industrialization of their land and the destruction of their laws and culture by the government as a way to stop future carlist risings. the Catalonian movement rised from the merchants and industrialist that had lost the american market, as a way of gaining atention from the government and recognition for the catalan language and culture.
the first carlist war map has some mistakes. the area controled by carlists in the north of catalonia should be bigger, even taking some land in aragon, while the Vasque and Navarre areas should be smaller, and cities like Bilbao and San Sebastian should be shown as part of the Isabelin cause.

As a Spanish myself, and with quite a bit of knowledge about our history, this video sadly comes from a false premise, Fernando VII swearing the constitution wouldnt have solved anything, all american territories outside of Cuba, Puerto Rico and Peru (a true royalist bastion that didnt rebel, but was conquered by Bolívar and San Martín) developed independence ambitions that were irreconciable, coupled with high levels of republicanism stemming from the US and the French revolution, the actual measures to mantain the empire in the Americas would had to ve taken before, there are two possibilities, the Aranda Memorial, wich stated that basically out of the continental american territories we should have created three Kingdoms of the same dinasty that were basically independent but cooperating with us economically and geopolitically; or another approach that was to cut power from the Vicerois (the delegates sent by the King to be supreme authority, this system also was used in like Italy, Aragon and so on at various times) and let the nobles, cleregy and third estate of the american territories have their own cortes (this was somewhat problematic due to the Bourbonic centralism, but could have actually have been done under Carlos IV that was a bit more leanient due to him not being too smart) also, the more rebellious territories were New Granada and Río de la Plata, why ? Because their Vicerroyalities were newer (and New Granada was actually abolished during some decades in the mid 1700s) and less well structured, so that gave rise to the unchecked influence of local authorities, also they had less priviliges inside of the complicated political and economic system, also affected by the trade reforms of Carlos III that were detrimental to american trade.
Also the Philippines were actually given autonomy, but some months after the peace with the rebels was signed, the war against the US started and they returned to the rebellion, and actually they fought the americans for like 4 years more when they conquered the islands.

    my toughts:
first of all, giving the viceroyalties full autonomy would mean the end of the *spanish* empire, this is because they were pretty well developed by the level of a colony, giving the americas the status of spain would mean that, overtime, the peninsula would become secondary, in less extreme but still same fashion that brazil and portugal.
they might be able to keep the viceroyalties if spain industrializes and the colonies no but that would be just buying time, and being secondary is something that the spanish society would never accept, so the americas might break up at some point.
the usa wouldnt just accept not getting california and texas without heavy treaties with spain, such as free door in all caribean and investment in new spain.
and last, spain would not join the great war unless they are promise huge gains, and the only possible thing the entente could offer would be arab colonies, but in the scenario the ottomans are pro-entente so...

Spain certainly wouldn’t develop that well either as these colonies are what led to their stagnation as it gave them unlimited resources and therefore made industrialization unviable as it was easier to just make money on plantations. This scenario turns Spain into a super powerful state with zero issues when in reality it’d remain a backwards and overextended empire.

Alright, so there are some mistakes that I have to fix (sorry but I literally study Spanish history). So It doesn't really matter if you call the Viceroyalties colonies or not, the Spanish Empire wasn't really a "traditional state" as it was called "the Spanish Monarchy" the Viceroyalties were part of the Crown so they already had a large degree of autonomy. The wars of independence were just a ploy of the creole elites to take power (since the Bourbons started to tax heavily on the elites), most of the people living there and the natives supported the Crown but since the peninsula was demolished by the French and British invasions it didn't have the economic power to rearm the military (plus most of the wealth was in America), also during the wars of independence the British sent troops to help the rebels, but they also looted the royal haciendas (where all the gold and silver was storaged) and they also destroyed the proto-industry that Spain already had. The rest is pretty much legit (if we count it's alternate history), the Constitution of 1812 would have been enough to keep the Viceroyalties loyalty so yeah, good job.

    • @mqdboy9278
      @mqdboy9278 10 месяцев назад +4

Also, Spain would have probably recovered economically way faster if the Viceroyalties didn't get their independence and there wasn't political instability. Spain (by this I mean the entire empire) would have probably become the second global power after Britain (since it had a massive quantity of resources).

As a latin american, I can say that the first rebellions were only to gain more autonomy within Spain (during 1810's) but after Spain denied that, and they poorly managed the war, the independentist ideas surged.

If the Spanish empire is not as popular as the Mongol or British, it will be a joke. We discovered 3 continents: America (most important event in history), Oceania and Antarctica, as well as the first circumnavigation of the world, and the first globalization, bringing the world into the modern era. In addition, we had a hegemony in Europe for 150 years. Napoleon 15 years. Hitler 3 years. British Empire in Europe, hegemonic: 0 years. Spain had lands in Europe for 457 years. All the countries of Western Europe were marked by the presence of the Spanish empire, which was 200 years in the Spanish Netherlands, 160 years in parts of France and Germany, Spanish emperor in Germany, Spanish king in England, annexation of the Portuguese empire, 457 years in Italy, participating in the Renaissance. We also made the golden age of culture. Basically Spain saved the Catholic religion in France, southern Germany and the Palatinate, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta and Italy. It is the only empire that had a hegemony in Europe and a simultaneous global hegemony, with lands in 100 countries on 5 continents and all oceans, with an estimated surface area between 1580-1640 of 30 million km2.
Although Spain arrived in America in 1492, and the English arrived in America in 1497, it took the United Kingdom 300 years to equal the surface area of the Spanish empire, and only achieved this around 1890, and with the island, which prevented the Spanish, Napoleon or German invasions.
The Spanish legacy has 485 million native speakers. 600 million in total. English mother tongue 380 million (40% born in parts of USA that the British never controlled. In 1900 there were only 15 million civilized people in the British Empire, in Australia and Canada. Basically the British legacy was saved by the USA and its commercial and industrial power after WW2, when the British Empire was dead and French was the majority language.
800 million Catholics thanks to Spain. 200 million in Europe, 500 million in America, 100 million in Asia and Oceania.
    120 million Anglicans.
But the British Empire has died more recently (in the 20th century), while Spain had its expansion 100 years earlier, and died earlier, and perhaps there is still more British memory. Maybe.
Catalan and Basque nationalisms are like Scottish or Irish, or Corsica.

I concede that Spain’s interests are endeavours to marvel at, but Portugal’s shouldn’t be snuffed either.
The individual who circumnavigated the world was trained by Portuguese navigators. Furthermore, while Spain was at its peak in Europe, Portugal essentially dominated the richest exchange route in the world, controlling in essence the entirety of Asian commerce in the Indian and Asian Pacific oceans thanks to defeating the Ottomans repeatedly and confining their fleets to the red sea and persian gulf while seizing the entries to either body of water. Additionally, Portugal had unusually strong correspondence with the Ming dynasty, in spite of being a colonizing power, using this to leverage trade with several oriental nations for extremely lucrative merits.
Furthermore there is now clear evidence that indicates the first individuals to discover Oceania were; not Dutch or Spanish, but Portuguese. Recent finds of wrecks off the coast of Australia with several indications to temporary presences on the continent have made it conclusively evident that Portugal discovered the continent possibly centuries ahead of the Dutch.
Portugal has likewise left a massive legacy that, despite being a far smaller nation proportionally maintaining a consistent ratio of 5x lesser than any statistic of Spain, had spread catholicism directly or indirectly to some of the furthest regions of the world and has roughly half as many native speakers as Spanish irrespective of its vast proportional disparity. Lastly, Portugal was the first and last global colonial empire, ending only days before the 21st century. Though it should be better recognised the extent of how Spain has left a massive mark on the world, Portugal’s far more obscure and defiant legacy should not be ignored either.
Additionally, if we want to get into technicalities, China itself was a nation that has left a huge mark on maritime and global history, pioneering crucial methods of navigation and massive feats of discovery that are seldom discussed today, though I find it most tragic that China never grew on its innovations in spite of its great potential shown in figures like the Yunnanese Zheng He, equal, if not better to Portugal’s iconic Afonso de Albuquerque.

@@moonreaps3753 Portugal was actually Spanish until 1713. All the Portuguese conquests in the world (Asia, Africa, America) are essentially Portuguese, but also Spanish. When in 1518, Charles I became the first king of modern Spain, the Portuguese king protested: "This is a crime and a usurpation of the common name of all Spaniards. We Portuguese are also Spanish." He does not mean that Portugal is dependent on Madrid, but that Portugal is one of the 5 Hispanic kingdoms (in order of seniority): Navarre (9th century), Leon (10th century), Aragon and Castile (11th century) and Portugal (12th century). They were all kingdoms descended from Roman Hispania, Visigothic Hispania, Christian Hispania against the Arabs. Portugal maintained this claim until the end of the War of Succession in 1713. Portugal lost this war, with the Austrian allies, and sought to separate itself from any identification with the new kingdom of Spain, the Bourbon monarchy, which was very centralist (whereas before Aragon had its own parliament). The name Iberian Peninsula then became more popular.
It was very easy for Magellan to become another sailor in the Spanish fleet. On global expansion: if we base ourselves on the kingdoms that are now part of modern Spain, and that are now autonomous communities (Castile-Leon and Aragon), as the United Kingdom has its original history in Scotland and England (with Drake, Elizabeth, Shakespeare... as a fundamental part of British history) we can say that Aragon (Spanish) expanded earlier, conquering Sicily in 1282, Athens 1311 (70 years there), Corsica and Sardinia around 1326, Djerba, Tunisia, Africa 1380 (first Iberian base in Africa, before Portugal in Ceuta 1415) and Naples 1442. Castile defeated the English fleet in 1372, in La Rochelle, sinking 48 ships. 5 Castilian invasions of southern England between 1374-1411, the Canary Islands, Africa 1402.
The Spanish (and the Portuguese) knew how to sail very well. The Spanish of these two kingdoms (the antecedents of modern Spain, like Prussia of modern Germany) expand before Portugal and are on two continents before. During the 15th century Portugal reaches Ceuta, Madeira, Azores and a great exploration of the western African coast.
Spain (at least united by the marriage of Isabel of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon in 1469) reaches America in 1492 (3 continents). At that time a Castilian general dominates Aragonese Italy, defeating France in 1494, and the Aragonese-Catalans travel with Christopher Columbus to America. We function as one country.
Portugal reaches India in 1498 (3 continents), but Brazil in 1500 (4 continents). I have already said that all the Portuguese (although they were Portuguese patriots, they also belonged to the historical Spanish or Hispanic nation). But well, Portugal reaches 4 continents first. As you say, the Portuguese made an extraordinary empire, dominating the most important trade route in the world, with strategic points throughout Asia and Africa.
But the world has 5 or 6 continents. The Pacific Ocean should not be confused with Oceania (the fifth continent). Japan is in the Pacific Ocean, but it is Asia, not Oceania. Portugal reached the Pacific Ocean in 1512, and Balboa saw the Pacific Ocean from America in 1513. The Spanish fleet crossed the entire Pacific Ocean in 1520 (half the world) discovering Oceania and the Philippines, and bringing products from the 5 continents, for the first time in history (first trip around the world, 1522, Elcano). Regarding the discovery of Australia... it is possible that Portugal arrived first. But this is the world of hypotheses. Spain has a map of Hawaii and a helmet in New Zealand (16th century). But it is not easy for the international community to recognize that the Spanish arrived there first. Yes, we do know that we discovered the Antarctic area in 1603 (possibly earlier, with ships carried by the current from Chile). For me it was a parallel exploration: Portugal arrived earlier in that area of Asia, and Spain reached almost all the archipelagos of the Pacific Ocean, North Africa, the great plains of the USA, Alaska and almost all of Western Europe, discovering Persepolis in Asia and the sources of the White Nile in Ethiopia, or Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy.
Spain changed the Chinese and Japanese currency, with our silver, and is also the mother of the USA currency. We had a base in mainland China and another in Taiwan. We also reached Japan, and we had bases in Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo, Brunei and Papua New Guinea. Before 1580. In reality, the Spanish and Portuguese expansions complemented each other in 1580, in the first global empire. Philip II (son of a Spanish and Portuguese woman) thus had dominions in Europe, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, the Pacific and Indian Oceans, North America, the Caribbean, South America and both African coasts. After 1640, Portugal became independent again. Spain remained on the 5 continents until 1898. My second surname, my mother's, is Portuguese: Tavares.

The viceroyalty of New Spain didn't want a constitutional monarchy. The "independence" movement started as an uprising against the Napoleonic represantatives, thats what father Miguel Hidalgo meant by "death to bad government". Bad government as in the revolutionary and democratic ideals of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Code. In fact the uprising had mostly died down by 1814 when the Spanish Constitution was repealed, but it picked back up in 1820 when it was reinstated and this time it was backed by the Mexican-Spanish elites and former generals in the Royalist army like Agustin de Iturbide and Lopez de Santa Ana. They were willing to make Ferdinand of Spain the Emperor of Mexico, similar to how Franz Josef would later be Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, but the major sticking point was that Mexico should remain an absolute Monarchy. However since Ferdinand took to long to reply, Agustin was temporarily appointed Emperor, and by the time the Spanish constitution was repealed in 1823 and Ferdinand was finally willing to take action the Mexican monarchy collapsed and became a republic.

personally dont find this scenario realistic, as in my opinion even with Spain as an enemy, the german army mustnt be underestimated. Yes, their gains would be a little less, but they would still definetely end 1914 on french/belgian soil and Tannenberg would also still be won, as russia was just that technologically inferior. The most unrealistic part to me however is the fact, that spain would be able to hold its empire together, with the divergence beeing only after the napoleonic wars. Thats because, due to the way, that Spain had treated its domains before the people would have used any chance to break away, as seen during the napoleaonic wars, because many south american nations already broke away in the 1810 and not the 1820 as you said. Thats why I personally would give it a 3 outta 10 accuracy wise, however it still was a well made video and I still did enjoy watching it, keep up the good work

False, in real life Spain on the verge of collapse destroyed any dream of independence of New Spain, Mexico became independent due to the betrayal of Realistas* army, Furthermore, many movements in 1810 were not independence, that was until around 1812-1814, In the reconquest of America, only Argentina resisted in 1810s, Spain could win, The majority of the population supported Spain in the early years, an early and quick victory before 1816 would have easily maintained the empire.

I give a 8 to realism because I think Romania would join ww1 to reclaim Transilvania or Hungary would have revelled before the end of the war to Austrians, but still a fantastic video 🤝

8 in realism, because in my opinion Spain would, due to greater influence, gain greater posessions in Scramble of Africa.
Also, Spain per se didn't had reasons to join Entente besides their ruler with limited competences due to his liberalisation (if joining Central Powers they could get some French border territories and colonies (or in extreme case France under personal union (Bourbon ruler))), Spain would stay neutral (or situation similiar to Greece)

8/10, In WW1 Spain would probably get Gibraltar as a reward from the UK, and i think that Croatia would get indipendance and that Vojvodina would have been given to Serbia.

I'd say it's a 7 or an 8 on realism, because some things were just tricky and random but one other thing, which is the landtaking from Germany after the lost war, is quite different to my first expectation

This is actually wrong. The criollos (spanish born in the Americas from peninsular parents), who held the vast majority of power in the different Viceroyalties, supported Ferdinand VII's absolute monarchy. The Viceroyalties and General Captancies commenced the independence movement due to the influence of masonry from the time of French-conquered Spain. Bolivar and all his entourage, along with the rebels in the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata (current Argentina), which was the first of the overseas territories to rebel, were all bourgeois masons. The masonry was the cause for the downfall of the Spanish Empire.

During the 15th, 16th, and early 17th centuries, Spain was the hegemonic world power. Neither France nor England dared to cough at him. Until the battle of Rocroi.
And if Portugal had not become independent, Brazil would now speak Spanish, not Portuguese.

Suggestion: What If Poland Lithuania Never Got partitioned? Basically in this world Austria And maybe Prussia protect Poland with especially Austria getting a Habsburg Candidate to become leader and in return of the alliance Austria Would Give Up The Polish majority of Galicia (Not Ukrainian Though) and with this I would see that Russia has minor expansion into the Baltics and Ukraine (So Like Just A little Bit Weaker Poland Than Before The Partitions) With this I would say Either during the Austro Prussian Wars Russia invades Poland While Austria's distracted leaving Poland To Fall In Russian Hands (most likely most territories become a puppet government) Or a later Hungarian Uprising in Austria Russia invades and a compromise comes with the borders from the 3rd partition.

The viceroyalties were not colonies, in addition to the fact that you did not include the general captaincy of Chile within the viceroyalty of Peru, Chile was from Peru, If you do not include it, you should not illuminate the general captaincy of Caracas in the viceroyalty of Granada because it was autonomous from the viceroyalty.

One thing i didn't get was why spain would willingly give land to the US and the US, Florida, since it's so geographically stategic, maybe louisiana. The adam onis treaty was a one and done deal bc it formerly set the borders and prevented US expansion its why they didn't renew a version of this with Mexico irl. Great video tho keep up the good work

I don't see how Serbia would just agree with giving away Macedonia to Bulgaria, and you didn't even give a good reason for it to happen. Also there is no way a war with the US could be prevented, Manifest Destiny was huge back then. 4/10 in realism

I'd give it a 7-to-8; the assumption that Lincoln would go for a third term seems a stretch, although continued Republican control for that term seems likely.
The one big flaw is not taking into account the rise of industrial wealth redistribution. Out of curiosity, what would be the position of your "Nuevo Imperio Español" in terms of business interests coming to the fore? If these companies are allowed the same ability to wield influence as they were in the US and Britain, there might be decisions made where Spanish business entities pushed the Empire into taking actions that would knock the scenario off target. If that's addressed at some point (i.e., more worker considerations taken into account more quickly than they had been in America and the UK), you'd still be on track with this.
    Otherwise, this was pretty good.
