    As a Floridian, I want to protest this new protest law, but as the only Person who had managed to live in Florida for 40 years without getting a criminal record, I'd like to keep that record clean.

    • @PewReview
      @PewReview 3 года назад +51

      You're probably fine. Check to see what event organizers are doing in your area, they've likely adapted their strategy since the law passed. The main goal of HB1 was to give police discretion to arrest anyone they happen to want to. The best way to thwart it is the same way protesters have been for nearly a year: don't make it worth the effort and optics hit it would take to arrest you.

    • @PewReview
      @PewReview 3 года назад +32

      Just think about how the police already act. Who do they target: white-passing people participating in chants and waving signs from the sidewalk, or the black organizers getting their message out on a megaphone? HB1 just makes it easier to be even more cruel to all the people they're already cruel to.

    3:40 Florida just had a great idea. In order to to protest without getting a riot charge, you just need to do it in your car. A huge group of people in their cars, no more than 2 people per car yelling, chanting, blocking the roods without "standing in the road" can get a lot more attention, be harder for the police to break up, not risk a felony.
    Great job Florida! Car Protesters for the win!

    Those lawmakers really decided they don't like tourism or the Constitution anymore, huh?

    • @LC-sc3en
      @LC-sc3en 3 года назад

      Well it's hard to dislike something you never read. As for tourism they know the only people this will be used to be extra punitive to is:
      1. minorities especially teenagers and young adults outside of tourism spots
      2. Liberal protestors especially protests for minority rights or environmentalism
      The largely white spring breakers and the snow birds will be fine. This is about giving police any excuse they want to make the lives of those that are already facing oppression even worse.
      Think about Stop and Frisk. If applied without bias it would have tanked the Tourism Industry in NY. Instead it was the same local residents black and Latino including kids on their way between school and home, playing basketball, or running errands being harassed by police over and over again. In 2009 in Brownsville, Brooklyn 93 of every 100 residents had been stopped and frisked. www.huffpost.com/entry/nypd-stop-and-frisks-15-shocking-facts_n_1513362

      How the new law actually defines a riot:
      (2) A person commits a riot if he or she willfully participates in a violent public disturbance involving an assembly of three or more persons, acting with a common intent to assist each other in violent and disorderly conduct, resulting in:
      (a) Injury to another person;
      (b) Damage to property; or
      (c) Imminent danger of injury to another person or damage to property.

      aclufl.org/en/news/governor-desantis-anti-protest-legislation-hostile-harmful-and-fundamentally-anti-democratic
      Under his anti-protest bill (HB 1/SB 484), any person who participates in a peaceful protest that turns violent (through no fault of their own) could be arrested and charged with a third-degree felony - that means a peaceful protester could lose their right to vote and be locked up in a cage for five years because they attended an otherwise peaceful protest where other people did something wrong. If they were one among ten protestors, they could face up to 15 years in prison, the same as someone charged with sexual assault. There is nothing more chilling to speech than the prospect of being locked up for merely speaking your values.

But if we took it a step further and hurt someone else who isn't involved, even if it's accidental like steppingon their toes while walking, that's a second degree felony charge of aggravated riot.
    Definitely going to protest this. The wording is terrible.
    Edit: Please note this does not prohibit peaceful protests. The question is what does and does not count as peaceful in the eyes of the state?
