    There's a little place near my hometown called Wimauma, and for the longest time, I thought it was a native name, like Okachobee or Thonotasassa. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was named by a postmaster, and its a mashup of his three daughters' names, Wilma, Maude and Mary!

    • @SD40Fan_Jason
      @SD40Fan_Jason 3 года назад +30

      So many towns in Florida were named by a postmaster who had to give the US Mail a name for the mail stop. I dont think many if them took it seriously, thinking it would be changed later or moved when the logging had been exhausted, etc. Florida has had dozens of "mashup" names too, which were created by the mail to make mail delivery easier before the Zone Improvement Program was launched. Names like "Del-Tona" "Tam-iami" "Orla-mpa" "San-lando" and my favorite, "Tril-acoochee"

      The city of Pompano was named such because a pair of surveyors stayed at a hotel in the area that served good Pompano for dinner and thus they wrote it on the map. Of course so many coastal cities are named for their inner-coastal adjacent towns, so Pompano Beach was named after the inner town of Pompano.

    The bit about Orlando reminds me of Dallas, TX. John Neely Bryan is attested to have named it for "my friend Dallas," but no one knows who that friend might have been. Dallas *County* was probably named for Polk's VP (it was named at the same time as Polk County, which was explicitly named after the president), but the city was named a few years before, and there's no record of Bryan ever having met that Dallas. The WPA Guide to Dallas mentions four candidates for the city's namesake, but we'll never know for sure. This is the sort of thing that happens when you let a madman found a city.

    You do Missouri names! You can talk about how all the small towns are named for exotic places, how we have a Cape that advertises itself as "the only cape not on the water," and how we have our own Kansas City right across from Kansas' Kansas City. Bonus points if you mention the tense relationship between St. Louis and St. Louis County.
    Edit: I just remember that we literally have a town named Peculiar.

    Yeah, not gonna say you 'forgot' it, but my town (Stuart Fl) has a funky story. It used to be called Potsdam, but when he was looking for a location for his next hotel, Henry Flagler said he wouldn't build it in a town called Potsdam. This news got to town the morning of the day he was to come through town. In a panic, the town council measured the sign by the train tracks that said welcome to Potsdam, and went searching for a replacement. The only sign that fit was from Stuart plumbing, so that's the sign they used. We didn't get the hotel anyway. The plumbing business is still family owned to this day.

    The part about Cocoa and Cocao Beach reminds me of two towns near me called Round Lake and Round Lake Beach. I was getting the covid vaccine at Round Lake High School and locked my keys in my car. I found out one side of the school is in Round Lake, and the other in Round Lake Beach. I was parked on the Round Lake side, so the officer there was able to call dispatch to get an officer to come unlock my car. If I was on the other side of the school, I would have had to call a tow truck.

Not to mention other ones like Possum Grape, Bald Knob, Fifty-Six, Weiner, and Flippin.
