  • While Old Hollywood actors might have had a bit more privacy than the A-listers of today, there were still plenty of fascinating and quirky things that people found out about them, either through gossip columns or tell-all books. A lot of the facts were quite bizarre, leading some to believe that their favorite classic film stars were just weird people. From the Pink Panther star who was deathly afraid of the color purple to the North by Northwest actor who didn’t need to climb Mount Rushmore to take an exciting trip, let’s take a look at some classic film stars who were actually really weird people.

      @caraqueno 6 лет назад +14

      It is, Tom but the actors of the Golden Age of Film, by and large, had greater range than today's actors because they had more media to hone their talents (vaudeville, Broadway, stock companies, radio, later, television, as well as film). They had more chances to practice their craft than most of today's actors. Also, most of the actors, stars and character actors, had more presence, more gravitas that comes from both a hard life and, in the case of people such as Norma Shearer, Robert Montgomery, Tallulah Bankhead coming from upper-middle class and wealthy backgrounds and, because of them, coming into contact with people from all walks of life, especially wealthy CEOs, writers, painters, and politicians. That all adds to the complexity and nuance of performance, which is rarely there in today's performers.

    The scene at 4:55 min almost destroyed an entire industry. Men had always worn t-shirts until the ultimate cool guy, Clark Gable, suddenly didn't have one in this movie (It Happened One Night). This was not only incredibly shocking to audiences of the time, but t-shirt sales plummeted overnight since they were not longer seen as something macho men wore.

    When I saw Private Lives on Broadway I was sitting around the eleventh row and middle of the stage and was really surprised to see Elizabeth Taylor completely sober, alert, acting wonderfully and gently feeding Richard Burton most of his lines. He didn't appear drunk (I read people well) his acting was horrible, he couldn't hit most of his marks and appeared to be suffering from alcohol related dementia. I'm not an fan of Elizabeth Taylor as a person but that day she was just so sweet, kind, loving toward Burton. I am convinced she took this part as a parting gift to Richard Burton who was dead about a year later.

    I used to buy into the whole "Mommie Dearest" story. Years later, however, I wondered why Christina never tried to tell her story *before* Crawford died. If that's enough to make one wonder the validity of her statements, consider this. Other major stars who were around Crawford and her adopted children took to her side after the book was published. I was about to shrug that off until I read Bette Davis's reaction. I can't remember it verbatim, but it was along the lines of "that kid's a rotten liar." When your worst enemy defends you, that's pretty hardcore.

    There is an excellent film clip somewhere on YT showing a journalist trying to get Mr, Gable to fire a 50 calibre machine gun mounted on a Flying Fortress, Gable's response is a measure of how seriously he took his USAAF duties! Clark Gable lost his wife, best friend and mother in law in a plane crash shortly before he signed up to be a gunner in a b17 bomber on active duty during WW2. He got blasted by AA flack, shot up by Luftwaffe fighters and consequently watched a crew-mate die from his injuries. He could have sat out the war doing a cushy USA PR job but he didn't, he put his mind and body on the line. I'll forgive him any slight weirdness as a result of all that... RIP.

      Aaron Greenfield+ LSD users claim it makes people see demons and shadows attacking them. LSD is the devils drug it's no different from Spirit cooking, and Satan worshipping because it all comes from satan himself. I never heard the saying about being afraid of The Color Purple. Can you explain to me why some are afraid of the color purple? I am curious. thanks.

    Clark Gable, when a huge star, volunteered to fly as a gunner in B-17s when he was in his 40s. The other guys in the crew were young enough to be his kids. He flew several combat missions over Germany. He didn't have to. I don't give a rat's about his hygiene.

    Being "weird" is not that negative. If we see the bigger picture we are all weird and that is what we need to remember. So to say that someone is "weird" is actually really "normal" in society. We are all as "weird" or "normal" as each other. :)

    There is commonsense behind every story of a person we think makes them weird, we just don't really know what their story is. Just because they have different habits from the so called norm of others, they can be artistically unique, and sometimes misunderstood. I find most of them intriguing, and few disappointing, they have won hearts.❤️

    Grant, born Archibald Alexander Leach, spent the early years of his life in an unhappy home in Bristol, England. At age nine, Leach’s father put his mother in a mental institution. He soon remarried, abandoning young Archie to the care of the state. Leach was expelled from school at 14 and joined a traveling stage troupe, quickly mastering the art of stilt-walking. In 1920, at all of 16, Leach and the troupe left Britain for a two-year American tour, from which he would never return. He joined the American vaudeville circuit, spending a significant chunk of time on the St. Louis stage and refining the acrobatic, juggling, and miming skills that would serve him for the rest of his entertainment career. Grant decided early in life that he would create his own persona that exuded debonair sophisticated , charming ,funny, flirtatious man. He acted his whole life while he lived in this persona. His movies and daily life were this persona. Archibald Leach died very young while Cary Grant was born and overcame the memory of Archibald and his sad childhood. Cary Grant was everything that Archibald could never be.

    No shit about Joan Crawford.

    • @zatoth13
      @zatoth13 6 лет назад +1

      The problem with Crawford's story is that much of the abuse allegations in the book came out after her death, so we don't have Crawford's versions. She also may not have known her daughter's mother was alive at some point, as she adopted her daughter from the notorious Georgia Tan, who was featured on an episode of Deadly Women for her then acclaimed adoption agency, which was a front for a baby theft business and she was known for letting babies die by not providing proper care (you would think Crawford's adopted daughter would at least have some love for not meeting that fate...). Crawford was an egomaniac and she had rivalries with several famous actresses, most notably with Bette Davis, which stemmed from an upstaging by Davis at an event early in Davis's career. Probably what should be here was that, despite being an egomaniac, it is alleged that Crawford wanted all photos of her destroyed.
