- While Old Hollywood actors might have had a bit more privacy than the A-listers of today, there were still plenty of fascinating and quirky things that people found out about them, either through gossip columns or tell-all books. A lot of the facts were quite bizarre, leading some to believe that their favorite classic film stars were just weird people. From the Pink Panther star who was deathly afraid of the color purple to the North by Northwest actor who didn’t need to climb Mount Rushmore to take an exciting trip, let’s take a look at some classic film stars who were actually really weird people.

And you thought today's stars were weird...
They are.
It's a race to the bottom
They're still way better actors
It's all subjective.
It is, Tom but the actors of the Golden Age of Film, by and large, had greater range than today's actors because they had more media to hone their talents (vaudeville, Broadway, stock companies, radio, later, television, as well as film). They had more chances to practice their craft than most of today's actors. Also, most of the actors, stars and character actors, had more presence, more gravitas that comes from both a hard life and, in the case of people such as Norma Shearer, Robert Montgomery, Tallulah Bankhead coming from upper-middle class and wealthy backgrounds and, because of them, coming into contact with people from all walks of life, especially wealthy CEOs, writers, painters, and politicians. That all adds to the complexity and nuance of performance, which is rarely there in today's performers.
One person's weird is another person's normal.
Penny you are a known weird person, you carry the "Weird Person"
card which you present as a passport to "Low Land". :)
Grant took LSD under Dr directed therapy. Which actually helped him deal with his personal demons. He was not a druggie as the video hints at.
You are absolutely right.but this video just wants to be a national enquirer.
National tattler graphic.
LSD has now been accepted by many in the medical community as a treatment for mental illness.
There is even a TED talk on this. Timothy Leary was also not the kook he was demonized as.
Oh my god. Clark Gable liked to be clean and preferred showers. How weird.
Bombastic Bushkin He was supposed to be notoriously gay. His girlfriend, Jean Harlow, would secure him men for sex.
@Dr. killpatient Oh yes he did. I've read numerous articles on it. Jean Harlow would procure men for him. In the meantime, she was very loose and would offer people money to have sex with her
@Dr. killpatient Go Google it. Google Clark Gable Jean Harlow. They were dating
If Clark Gable wanted to have sex with a man, he would not have needed Jean Harlow or any woman to get men for him! He was man enough to get anyone "He" wanted.
Polly Purree Shut the fuck up.
Clark Gable wore dentures & there was a smell associated with them that Vivien Leigh noticed during their prolonged close-ups. He complained about her foul language, so the two were mutually complaining about the other's mouth.
people have always been weird. its just harder to hide now.
Neurosis (unreal behaviour) is considered to be a 90% disorder in the population, generally pretty harmless, whereas psychotics are much more disconnected. Unfortunately a lot of 'driven' functional psychotics get into politics... Don't we know it.
Bryt25 Correct. Politics, News anchors, and acting. Anything for fame. Anything - if you know what I mean.

The scene at 4:55 min almost destroyed an entire industry. Men had always worn t-shirts until the ultimate cool guy, Clark Gable, suddenly didn't have one in this movie (It Happened One Night). This was not only incredibly shocking to audiences of the time, but t-shirt sales plummeted overnight since they were not longer seen as something macho men wore.
The difference between mental illness and eccentricity? Money and/or talent
Yes when ppl r Crazy & rich ,they r called ecentric ,if ppl r poor & crazy ,they r just CRAZY(*_*)(+_+)....smh
"Not exactly true" Sincerely Salvador
Reminds me of a Mad Magazine joke: If you're poor you're the town weirdo! If you're rich you're the local eeccentric!
LORNE PECK
So Clark Gable was a clean freak: shocking stuff!
When I saw Private Lives on Broadway I was sitting around the eleventh row and middle of the stage and was really surprised to see Elizabeth Taylor completely sober, alert, acting wonderfully and gently feeding Richard Burton most of his lines. He didn't appear drunk (I read people well) his acting was horrible, he couldn't hit most of his marks and appeared to be suffering from alcohol related dementia. I'm not an fan of Elizabeth Taylor as a person but that day she was just so sweet, kind, loving toward Burton. I am convinced she took this part as a parting gift to Richard Burton who was dead about a year later.
Elizabeth Taylor marrying someone out of spite. Sounds likes most of the people I know lmao
Katharine Hepburn moment
Sounds LIKES??
That's ALL people
If they ever do a film on the life of Orson Wells, Russel Crowe is their man...
No. Vincent D'Onofrio!!
most actors today are really weird people... it takes a certain kind of eccentricity to get up every day and convincingly portray another person
I remember the fabulous Joan Rivers once said....”Have you heard the latest about Liz Taylor ?.....She IS the new ride at Disneyland “ 😂😂
But my favorite is Liz yelling hurry to a micro wave.
If it’s good enough men and not be slated for it ......... loved Joan Rivers
@@albertelnen9144 I liked, "They pierced her ears and gravy came out!"
Barney the Dinosaur must have been Sellers' worst nightmare..
Cam Good he hated oprah
Cam Good He was my worst nightmare!
Cam Good
Especially since he hated the colour green as much as purple.
Cam Good 😂😂😂
@Jim McCracken The Purple People Eater?
My response to this " Frankly my dear, i don't give a damn. "
Frankly my dear . i dont give a damp cloth
All people are weird once you really know them but it takes years to really see it.
I used to buy into the whole "Mommie Dearest" story. Years later, however, I wondered why Christina never tried to tell her story *before* Crawford died. If that's enough to make one wonder the validity of her statements, consider this. Other major stars who were around Crawford and her adopted children took to her side after the book was published. I was about to shrug that off until I read Bette Davis's reaction. I can't remember it verbatim, but it was along the lines of "that kid's a rotten liar." When your worst enemy defends you, that's pretty hardcore.
She was probably still afraid of her while she was still alive and only felt free after her death.
There is an excellent film clip somewhere on YT showing a journalist trying to get Mr, Gable to fire a 50 calibre machine gun mounted on a Flying Fortress, Gable's response is a measure of how seriously he took his USAAF duties! Clark Gable lost his wife, best friend and mother in law in a plane crash shortly before he signed up to be a gunner in a b17 bomber on active duty during WW2. He got blasted by AA flack, shot up by Luftwaffe fighters and consequently watched a crew-mate die from his injuries. He could have sat out the war doing a cushy USA PR job but he didn't, he put his mind and body on the line. I'll forgive him any slight weirdness as a result of all that... RIP.
+Wayne Simpson I heard Gable had a death wish after seeing his dead wife and that Hitler told his troops if they happened upon Gable that they were not to kill him because he was Hitler`s favourite Movie Star!
And just how does it make a person "weird" to not like baths? Call me weird then. I have only used showers for the past 30 years or so. I call that just plain good sense.
clark gable had imperfect teeth. when filming he would wear temporary porcelain veneers. the 'permanent' kind of the latter 20th century had yet to be developed. the glue used back in clark gable's era is what made his breath so very bad.
+John Runion That`s good news, I thought the idea of Gable walking around all the time with bad breath kind of tainted his charisma, if I was him I would have explained this to Vivien Leigh. Jennifer Aniston is said to have really bad breath because she drinks loads of coffee all day.
at least as far as i know. i have always read/heard the cause of his bad breath was the glue for his temporary porcelain veneers.
I’ve seen a RUclips video where famous actors and/or their children spoke about questionable & cruel behavior they witnessed and/or overheard at the time regarding Crawford’s treatment of her 2 oldest adopted children.
People have had mental issues since the dawn of time. We put these "stars" on pedestals. They are no different than the rest of us
Exactly right, they were human beings in the spotlight.
Exactly. Most of these stars were mentally unstable before they got to hollywood. All mentally unstable celebrities have one thing in common, having a bad childhood. Them being famous only made their problems worse
Great video guys!
Why not bring up how Sellers was a terrifying wife beater instead? Far more weird than being scared of the color purple.
Eden2089 I wholeheartedly and unfortunately disagree, it is FAR weirder to be scared of the color purple, because the word weird means something isn't common or when used comparatively is less common than the other option, far more men are wife beaters than are scared of purple, therefore it's weirder
sellers was a despicable human beeing. and a complete nut. it wasn't just the purple thing.
Wife beating is reprehensible; it's not "weird", however.
Being afraid of an innocuous color IS weird.
And it was green he hated, not purple.
@@hamupinhere The facts are if you beat your wife or if you are afraid of the color purple. You have serious mental problems. Weird though can be strange; of relating to; or caused by Witchcraft or the supernatural. More weird would be afraid of purple. There you have it.
Your BEST POST YET!!!!! Thanx G!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently Vivien Leigh didn't say that Clark Gable's breath was bad, infact they got on quite well and stayed friends.
Cary Grant is one of my favorite actors.
Clark Gable didn't sound weird. If anything he erred on the clean side.
It's a Pity he couldn't bother to keep his Dentures clean. Most women of the day dreamt of kissing Clark Gable but Vivien Leigh couldn't stand it.
Not to mention that most of us still carry portable showers in the army.
He frankly don't gve a damn😤😆😋his smelly breath some actors yoused to eat garlic for the sex scenes ...wives shoving it in their hubbys mouth😂😂b4 set🎬🎭

Clark Cable sounds fine to me. I appreciate cleanliness in a man. My husband showers every morning--he says to wake up and get going--and if he has a hot sweaty day working in the manufacturing plants he visits, working our gardens or exercising, he takes another shower as soon as he walks in the door.
Nothing wrong with being clean if I get sweaty during day I shower too have been know shower up three times a day. I have thyroid problem that cause me sweat at odd times it's not weird
What's the rest of the story?
Sounds like a keeper
@@BossySwanTOM SELLECK REMINDS ME OF CLARK GABLE A LOT. TALL DARK AND HANDSOME.

Great content!. Great production quality too. Glad I found this channel.
To be fair, LSD was legal when Cary Grant was using it.
Yes it was legal back then but that doesn't change the effects of it.
Well the LSD back then is wildly different than LSD today, as with any drug, legal or not.
@@mildredpierce4506 What effects would that be? If someone wants to trip on acid in the privacy of their home, I say more power to them.
@@Melaninoutdoors Or of 1967?
@@deltatango5765 That's all well and good until they leave their house, or have a flashback months later. Not to mention psychological damage it can cause. Guess who ends up paying for that?? A lot of stuff affects more than just the user. Lots of people have OD'd on LSD and killed themselves or caused permanent damage.
LSD was legal back then. Psychiatrists were actually prescribing it, using it in their therapy.
California is legalizing it again. And mushrooms. And putting ketamine on the market
@@maggiemae7749 It's all about $$$$$!
The first stories: Grant, Crawford, Sellers and Welles sounded like they had psychological problems. So did Gable. I don't think that is weird. It is mental illness. And if you are wondering why I include Grant? Self medication. Elizabeth Taylor probably had mental issues too since she was both an alcoholic and a food addict. Just because people are famous and/or rich does not mean they are happy or fulfilled.
Metamorphosis Rox Grant had an outrageously abusive father and mentally ill mother. His mother told him she was going for a walk and never returned. Very poor family.
A lot of creative people are bi polar. disorder..Vivien Leigh had this. When she was in a manic mood, she would eat two meals within an hour because it make you ravenously hungry.Tat explains Taylors eating and also explains her addiction to drugs. In the old days before anti depressants were invented doctors would prescribe amphetamines ,tranquilizers and sleeping pills for it,even though doctors knew these drugs are addictive and would eventually kill them It was tthought that these drugs controlled the disease but eventually it was concluded that it made it worse. As for being alcoholic,bi polar people frequently self medicate themselves with alcohol
Actually Elizabeth Taylor sounds like she had borderline personality disorder to me.
Why do you assume Grant was mentally ill? A lot of people like LSD who have nothing wrong with them.
+metamorphosis rox You seem to be quick to judge. Are you without flaw?
It isn't weird not being into sex Hepburn was probably asexual like me
She was lesbian.

No, she just had morals so she was able to practice ethics. Old school all the way. Rare, wonderful and true LADY.
So someone is crazy now if they are asexual? 😂
4:57 I don’t take baths for the same reason xD
My dad met Jon Travolta when he was at work one time, and when he came home he told us about the encounter. It wasn't very long because he was currently working with someone trying to sell a boat at the time, but he said that he wasn't very social and he didn't seem all the way there and ready to talk. It's like he knew what to do on a script, but when Travolta had free will, he doesn't know what to do.
Orson Wells had lots of noses but he always had trouble picking one ! 😜😀😋
So did MJ...but it finally collapsed. Ha!
Good one 😁😁

Either way, I still love Clark Gable, a true American hero and a gentleman.
Somehow I don't think taking LSD, or being afraid of The Color Purple, is as weird as Spirit cooking, and Satan worshipping!
Two questions; one, what in the world is "Spirit cooking", and two, who's worshipping Satan? I thought all celebrities automatically sold their souls to him, anyway.
PeanutButterZombie00. It's something that a lot of celebrities, and the elite do, it is a Satanic ritual where they cook something with a bodily fluid, like blood or semen, from some type of ritual sacrifice. As for your second question, well you already answered it yourself..
Aaron Greenfield+ LSD users claim it makes people see demons and shadows attacking them. LSD is the devils drug it's no different from Spirit cooking, and Satan worshipping because it all comes from satan himself. I never heard the saying about being afraid of The Color Purple. Can you explain to me why some are afraid of the color purple? I am curious. thanks.
PeanutButterZombie00 it's a nutty conspiracy theory the lunatic trump supporters dreamed up. They claim Hillary and lady Gaga teamed up with some artist and perform cannibalistic rituals to Satan. Believing that's a real thing is pretty weird!
Dee Dolores. It is a mental illness and The Color Purple triggers it for some reason, just like an epileptic is triggered by light flashes, or certain patterns.
Clark Gable, when a huge star, volunteered to fly as a gunner in B-17s when he was in his 40s. The other guys in the crew were young enough to be his kids. He flew several combat missions over Germany. He didn't have to. I don't give a rat's about his hygiene.
I love it when people get trashed who are dead and can not defend themselves.
It's not often you hear about someone wanting a bigger nose.
Symbolic Living - I chuckle why saying wanting to have a bigger nose is very unusual.
That's true but I often see people who've had nose jobs to make it smaller, the nose itself looks o.k but it's often not in preposition with a large face making them look wierd
well his was small for his large face.
Symbolic Living it is not often you hear about someone not having sex more than once
She did have a point about wire hanger. Granted she over reacted.
I hope you do more videos like this, I loved it!
Loved this vid!!!
He always had a cool comeback. He always got to say cool lines written by groups of writers
he certain did. Who are you talking about?
@@fostermaltloaf5189 Thank you. My thoughts exactly.
Being "weird" is not that negative. If we see the bigger picture we are all weird and that is what we need to remember. So to say that someone is "weird" is actually really "normal" in society. We are all as "weird" or "normal" as each other. :)
I can’t believe I just found your channel! !! Glad I did! About to binge watch your channel! 😬New Subscriber btw as well!!! 🙌🏽
Loving acid doesn't make you weird it just makes u interested in something fun🤔
There is commonsense behind every story of a person we think makes them weird, we just don't really know what their story is. Just because they have different habits from the so called norm of others, they can be artistically unique, and sometimes misunderstood. I find most of them intriguing, and few disappointing, they have won hearts.❤️
People are complex. And extraordinary people are extraordinarily complex.
Nothing new under the sun. Everyone is weird, some are just more pronounced.
Peter Sellers is a great example of some one who takes life WAY too seriously.
It’s lie that Vivian Leigh called out on Clark Gables’ breath. The story was a Hollywood myth. It was publicity agent’s stunt to create tension surrounding production of GWTW. The two actors were very respectful and professional towards each other, as well as, the rest of the cast and crew.
You had me at Cary Grant!
Nice presentation! Good job, made me subscibe.💥
Also Shirley temple was actually a year older than everyone thought even herself. It was the studios idea so that she could be on screen as a little girl for longer
I will always love Clark Gable.
Very interesting video. 👍🏻
Like the videos, just wish they were longer.
I am a fan of the Classic Stars from the Golden Era the stars from back then were very Elegant.
Jada Kennedy Like Fatty Arbuckle and Phil Spector?
They were elegant when in the public eye but what were they like behind closed doors?
Didn't anyone ever read Hollywood Babylon? There's always been a seamy side to that artistic colony!
Jada Kennedy That was bcuz they were working under the so-called" Studio System" then. MGM, Warner Bros, etc would groom talent & would basically re-invent them; even making up fake bios about them. Also, when ever they were seen in public they had always look impeccably dressed & well-mannered .That's why It's surprising to see that they were human after all..
Michael Lewis. Fatty Arbuckle was framed. The stories about his debauched lifestyle were lies spread to ruin his career, which they did.
I love Carey Grant even more, he dropped acid 100 times in three years, that sounds exactly like my Cal State college years...
This was a good one.
that was GREAT thanx !
None of these are weird. I’m sure a lot of people have their same quirks.
With all those fake noses you'd think he would've done Pinocchio at some point?

I laughed a bit too hard at that imagining Orson portraying Pinocchio 😂😂 Would have been a award winning performance 😂
Or Cyrano de Bergerac
joey dubbs76 If he wanted to play something wooden with many nose jobs he could have done Michael Jackson

It would have kept falling off, like his "real" nose! 😂 Hell, they should have done a film about MJs nose wanting to become a real nose! Hahaha
joey dubbs76 bazooms
The Gable thing wasn't weird, so he wanted to be clean, technically a bath IS sitting in filth, and if I was in the military in the old days I'd want my own shower too. Kate probably suffered from sexual abuse or some trauma, nothing weird there either.
Even though i cannot stand celebrity gossip swill,
this was marvelously fascinating information.
I honestly think that Tinseltown does strange things to people's heads if they live there long enough and aren't well grounded to begin with.
You missed Marlon Brando, he used to put pieces of bread in his ears and walked around with them.
Lol what??
LMAO WHAT
Wow!! Very interesting..😉
It is actually considered to be disability for those of us who are "obseesed" with cleanliness and personal hygiene!

Peter Sellers is afraid of purple, next thing there is a picture of Peter Sellers laughing next to a woman in purple. Yep, this video is full of facts, not.
cplcabs: He was not always afraid of purple, he was afraid of purple only after Vittorio de Sica told him that that was the color of death ... think cplcabs, think ...
cplcabs That’s exactly what I was thinking 😂😎
@@ogungou9 Presumably, De Sica would have told Sellers this in the '60s since that's when De Sica directed Sellers in After the Fox. Sellers and Dyan Cannon were in Revenge of the Pink Panther in the late '70s. Cplcabs makes a reasonable point.
cplcabs Brain Candy
What about people afraid of the movie The Color Purple? There's a documentary.
Dyan Cannon did *not* introduce Cary Grant to acid; it was the other way around. Grant's psychotherapist introduced him to it at a time when it was still legal.
First psychotherapist of worth I've ever heard of.
Cary Grant dropped acid in the 1960s in a vain attempt to become heterosexual. BTW, a lot of well known respectable people like Claire Booth Luce used LSD in the 1960s.
I need to find out where Orson Wells' noses are.
Geo caching! XD
So ole Cary would have bad trip... trippin on LSD..who woulda thunk that one😂🤔🤦💅 just subbed.thumbs up!
Cary Grant did LSD under doctor directed therapy and he said it did help him with childhood trauma and failed relationships. He wasn’t weird.
control and robbery.
Grant, born Archibald Alexander Leach, spent the early years of his life in an unhappy home in Bristol, England. At age nine, Leach’s father put his mother in a mental institution. He soon remarried, abandoning young Archie to the care of the state. Leach was expelled from school at 14 and joined a traveling stage troupe, quickly mastering the art of stilt-walking. In 1920, at all of 16, Leach and the troupe left Britain for a two-year American tour, from which he would never return. He joined the American vaudeville circuit, spending a significant chunk of time on the St. Louis stage and refining the acrobatic, juggling, and miming skills that would serve him for the rest of his entertainment career. Grant decided early in life that he would create his own persona that exuded debonair sophisticated , charming ,funny, flirtatious man. He acted his whole life while he lived in this persona. His movies and daily life were this persona. Archibald Leach died very young while Cary Grant was born and overcame the memory of Archibald and his sad childhood. Cary Grant was everything that Archibald could never be.
OMG I just got the joke from A Fish Called Wanda!!! Archie Leach!!!
I ate lunch at table next to Cary Grant and his last wife in NYC, I think it was LA Veranda, in 1980. The conversation between them (mostly him) was so very weird I don't doubt LSD was a constant with him.
My maternal grandfather looked so much like Gable, especially his smile, mouth closed or open and those little dimples! As Bob Hope would sing... thanks!, for the memories.
Just discovered Grunge and I'm subscribing!
Cary Grant was gettin' REKT 😂😂😂
The Burton and Taylor account gives the impression that they were madly in love with each other :D
You know, I think I wanna rent "The Color Purple ", that was a pretty damn good film-?
Good thing it wasn’t the purple panther then.
You know what' really weird? People watch these videos and believe them.
Now THAT'S weird.
It's just as weird to watch them and disregard them completely.
I don't think it's particularly useful to even create these videos or thinking as highly of actors as the majority do. Idolatry is wicked.

Carey Grant was a smart person. Understanding one's own mind, the universe, silence and clarifying inhibitions is the greatest wealth.
I agree about his brilliance. Hitchcock agreed as well by hiring him for acting.
Loves to here about old Hollywood 👍🏿 these Stars had issues and awesome secrets 🙀🙀🤫
My best story on Sellers was him driving flight attendants nuts.He was carrying as if he was his character from Pink Panther.
No shit about Joan Crawford.
The problem with Crawford's story is that much of the abuse allegations in the book came out after her death, so we don't have Crawford's versions. She also may not have known her daughter's mother was alive at some point, as she adopted her daughter from the notorious Georgia Tan, who was featured on an episode of Deadly Women for her then acclaimed adoption agency, which was a front for a baby theft business and she was known for letting babies die by not providing proper care (you would think Crawford's adopted daughter would at least have some love for not meeting that fate...). Crawford was an egomaniac and she had rivalries with several famous actresses, most notably with Bette Davis, which stemmed from an upstaging by Davis at an event early in Davis's career. Probably what should be here was that, despite being an egomaniac, it is alleged that Crawford wanted all photos of her destroyed.
It wasn’t purple Peter Sellers was afraid of, it was Green.
Nearly blew his little yellow skin off 😂
Susan Lane that makes sense, in those days green was considered unlucky, race drivers refused to drive green cars for a long time.
kev kev exactly...plus I watched a BBC 2 documentary about him and it interviewed his son (now deceased) who advised it was green he was superstitious off as advised by a psychic he went to.
one of the problems i have with some of these accounts are the fact most come from books, not interviews. And many of these books came out after the death of the actors in question, which means we do not have them to refute or confirm the information.
Susan Lane not sure why green is considered unlucky, but it was common here in England, and I know over the pond many NASCAR drivers felt the same. me I like green!
Boy is your info skewed. Grant was given LSD by a therapist. He didn't just "love it", he was told that it would help his problems caused by being abandoned by his mother in a public place as a toddler. BTW, it didn't help but by the time he found that out the damage was done.
My grandmother also had the same issue with the colour purple! She always called it the "death colour" and refused to have it anywhere near her! 🙈🙈🙈
