I have owned a 02 WRX for 13 years. I bought a factory rep WRX with 10k miles and now have 128k and going strong. It is my everyday car that I drove to work before I retired. I live in the crowed southeast portion of Pennsylvania. My car is box stock but with automatic transmission that makes it easy to drive in heavy traffic. My wife and I have been on 2000 mile trips with no problems. I have owned a Fiat 124 coupe, 1970 Lotus Elan, 1970 Alfa 1750 GTV, 1979 Alfetta sedan and this car is by far the most reliable. The Lotus was prone to self disassembly and I dropped parts all over the road. The Alfas succumbed to road rot from the salt in winter. The WRX shows no rust. The only problems I have had is a cracked radiator and leaky valve cover gaskets. The Subaru factory mechanic I use has a 02 WRX which he says is the best one made. He cautioned that a lot of head gaskets are blown by drivers not using premium gas and horsing around with cold oil. I was thinking about getting a different car. I am 72 years old with a bad heart. I was interested in getting a "fun" car which will probably be the last one I buy. But after looking at your review, I think I will keep the car I have. Now I am looking at Cobb stuff for a little "fun".
YES! keep it! I'm the second owner of my wrx. Got if from the guy at around 168,000 miles. currently it has 199,700 miles on it! so after this week it will have 200k. Although I've only had it for a little over 2.5 years, i still love the car!
Hi Barry. The car is a blast around town. It is easy to drive in stop-and-go traffic as well as the highway. It is a little slow off the line but once moving, it goes! I average about 20 MPG in town and 27 on the road if I keep a light foot. I now have 138K and am now at Stage 1+ Cobb stage. That made a big difference in performance and mileage. Remember to use only 91 or better octane gas and don't horse it around until it is fully warmed up.
+PistnRods it is the best color on those cars too IMHO! Although I could go for a silver metallic one as well. But, as I said in the video... Try and find one that hasn't been hacked up.
What a unicorn of a bugeye. Hero color, factory engine, factory exhaust, factory ride height. Must have been an awesome experience to drive that time machine!!!
I bought a 02 WRX stock with 92k miles last year and it costed me $10k. Had only 1 owner before me and he really took great care of it. No accidents either.
It's hard being a Subaru enthusiast in Texas seeing how every Subaru here holds there value like crazy! When I went to visit Colorado it was like STi central they were going for as low 8K over there!
Good review...I own an Aspen White MY01 Australian delivered version of this car that has just clocked over 100,000kms (60,000 miles). It is every bit as tidy as this car but was bog stock when I bought it and was very ordinary performance wise. They need some basic performance mods to make them perform the way they should. You don't need to go crazy on them just some simple bolt on mods to make them come to life. One major problem they had was a catalytic convertor installed in the up pipe before the turbo. That was deleted on the later models (and mine now also). I fitted an STI VF34 ball bearing turbo, 3" turbo back exhaust, ecutek tune (to run on 98 octane fuel), high volume fuel pump, 20 psi boost, modified air box, BMC air filter, silicone intake hoses, STI intercooler water sprayer system, GFB blow off valve and a slightly larger MRT bonnet scoop. It may sound like a lot of mucking around but by doing this you can still have a stock looking car but have the performance and sound it deserves.
Loved watching this. I recently purchased an 02 Bugeye myself with just a hair over 64,000 miles on it. It's far from stock, but the previous owner took very good care of it and it came with a complete maintenance history. Favorite car I've ever driven.
Like the way you p[resented the WRX. Good for you that you know better than to launch that car. Its a rally car, not a drag car. Good looking camera angles. And you were able to show how much fun there cars are to drive. They are extremely fun on dirt roads in 3rd gear. We all knew about the WRX. Thats how it ended up selling here. A lot of Americans wanted one.
I knew first hand because I used to hang with the street-racing crowd back in the Netherlands. The leader of the group had a white 2002. It ended up with transmission issues. It sounded and looked great however!
Just bought one of these for 3k with 200k miles n I was driving it back home and it’s abnormally smooth for this old of a car with that many miles on it
+The GoatMaster Loved GTO's. I had a '70 GTO in high school, and I scooped up an '06 back in 2010 until I traded it on a C6. I miss my '70 every day. - Pontiac.. never forget..
+The GoatMaster I have yet to drive a GTO, but I have always liked the styling of the gto. And who says no to 400hp and gobs of torques sent to the rear wheels?
Another excellent car review! Nothing against the current generation Subarus but those early 2000s Subarus have quite a lot of charm and character all around. The vehicle design is just likeable.
Wow all original. Beautiful. I remember when I bought one all stock back in 2005... Still have it, although no longer stock and more worn out. Still running strong.
+Tonite I am not judging. As mentioned in the review mine wouldn't have been stock either. Those turbo boxer 4's just sound too good with a nice exhaust!
They are absolute fantastic cars, I have a wrx turbo 2005 on my drive. Look after it and it will be fine. Service every 5000 miles. Mine is 100 % original, my old subaru impreza had 158k on the clock drove really well. My friend has a Ferrari and he says my subaru sounds so good. 4 doors and a great size boot, you can't get better
The new WRX's lost some of that with the ELH's. But they got more power out of it so there is that. I still like the ULH's a lot better. Sound is pretty important for a car IMHO.
As a side note, the stock USDM STIs have never had forged pistons. They have hypereutetic cast pistons which wear nicely but will not be as durable under detonation.
My 2002 WRX just went over 100K...plan on driving it for another 100K. Stock is all I ever needed to enjoy driving. One clutch, one radiator and belts...and Pennzoil synthetic every 4-5 K miles. Put three sets of tires on so far. Thanks for the nice video review...you should try some harder cornering to really appreciate it.
+ITUMBLE4U if it was my own car... well... You would already know I would go flat out! (and it would have an exhaust, tune and that STi wing) I respect the fact that I am not in my own car, and won't do anything that the owner won't let me do. It was fun to drive without even touching the limit, and I hope to get to review an earlier STi down the line to compare the two.
I just picked up a bone stock 02 wrx last year with 27k miles. Defiantly paid a premium for it being stock with low miles. I couldn't resist throwing a turboback, uppipe and a tune on it shortly afterwards. It may have lost some value but you cant beat the boxer rumble! I have a blast driving it everyday.
+Rick Olsen no judging from me. I would have done the same thing! That boxer sound! I hope to get to review a tuned one down the line. I want exhaust cam on one of those BAAAAAD!
Mistermoeshmoe HELP I’m in the market for a 2002 WRX but whenever I go to look for one everywhere I look they all say BASE or WAGON. Isn’t there a turbo model or something? I cannot find a higher trim. Any advice?
Looking at a 02 wrx hatch tomorrow. I hope he entertains my offer. Is it just me, or does anybody else think the prices on Subarus are ridiculous. I can't help but feel that way after searching for months and months. lol
+goodluckwithallthat they are way up there, but with good reason. They last a long time if you take care of them and they are very nice cars to drive. And the older ones start to look very classic compared to the newer ones. It's like MKIV supra's. You can't even think MKIV for less than 10 grand anymore. And I include the NA automatics...
+zutekeela I totally agree. Although the new STi is a stunner too, the older cars just add emotion to the mix. And that goes for just about any old car (especially one with a performance pedigree).
I wouldn’t either! So many cars came on my radar because of the NFS series. My ongoing love for the e39 M5? NFS. I would always end up with that car, it handled the best IMHO! And I had so much fun playing NFS Underground with my younger brothers. Many “too soon juniors” were had. Always trying to time the NOS just right!
I got mine all stock for $2300 Canadian. It had 279,000km on if and the fenders were rusted to shit! I fixed the rust (mostly) and only thing I have done is saw off the airbox silencer.
Great review! The car looks and sounds amazing. Do you think it is worth it? I am a college student and I am looking for a daily driver that is fun and reliable. I have seen nothing but good reviews about this car on Edmund's. However, I have read some horror stories about the transmission and blown engines. Your story about the friend in Switzerland confirmed the issues regarding the transmission. I do NOT plan to launch the car period. On the other hand, I do plan to accelerate like you did in the review. Watching this review gives me hope about the WRX. Money is not an issue since I do work, but I do not want to spend more than I have to in the long-run. Also, I have had a 2001 Toyota Corolla that the previous owner neglected, abused and did not care about but it still turns on and drives. My time is limited with the Corolla since the tags will expire in three months. I created a channel to contact you and see if anyone in the comments has any information. Keep up the videos and I hope you get back to me soon. Thank you in advance!
+Cesar Luna what you need to realize is that many people do not leave them stock. You really want to find something like this car. A unicorn. One that has not been modified. Low miles would be nice too. But, as any car over a decade old there will be issues that will need fixing. Clutch work, hoses get brittle and need replacing that kind of stuff. It has been utterly reliable for the owner, and they still command a premium. If it has been abused by the previous owner you're up the proverbial creek. The engine seems to be the last of your problems if it's stock. The trans is the first to give.
The regular impreza does indeed not have a turbo at this time. When "WRX" or "STi" is on the trunk lid it is indeed turbocharged! (Unless someone is putting badges on a vanilla Impreza and passes it off as WRX or STi or debadges the car)
This particular one hasn't had any problems. And I know of bugeyes that reached over 200k miles, so I think the engine is pretty solid if you keep them stock.
+Dominick Delgado they are OK just as long as you don't beat on them. Frequent launches from a dig ensures premature death. I had a comment from someone that their stocker had over 200K miles on it. So they can last if treated correctly!
MD46ter stock ones regularly go over 200k miles and they maintain value better than other cars (which also means that they are more expensive to buy second hand). But higher mileage cars come with high mileage problems, that is why I advocate a pre purchase inspection. It might cost you a little, but it is no where near the cost of having a major problem.
lol good review mate...........buuuuutttt.........its not the first year that the impresa was in America. I'm pretty sure that the 1996 was the first year. please clearify?
+subie skyline34 are you talking about the GC8's (mean eye). Because I had the same discussion with a friend of mine and he said they are different platforms and that's why the call them GC8's instead of by the headlight type.
The headers are already UL, the only 2 things I would do is the STI wing and an axle back with perhaps a nice baseline tune to get a little extra power. This is a cream-puff that the owner will keep stock forever though!
Had a freind who had a wrx just as clean, same year completely stock... He wrapped it around a tree 3 weeks later thankfully he's ok the car is done shame
+The Dutch Texan worth a try! what about trade? I just got a 98 impreza rs with 88k miles. 100% stock. exterior is probably 8.5 or 9 and interior is 9.5/10
+The Dutch Texan I'm in texas too, lmk if you come across any other clean ones. I don't want to sell my subaru because it is so pristine but I do want a similar quality 02 maybe 03

YES! keep it! I'm the second owner of my wrx. Got if from the guy at around 168,000 miles. currently it has 199,700 miles on it! so after this week it will have 200k. Although I've only had it for a little over 2.5 years, i still love the car!
Lee Sumner Hi Lee . Thinking of buying a wrx 2002 automatic. cos I drive in town are they any good Japanese import. am I crazy. Barry
Hi Barry. The car is a blast around town. It is easy to drive in stop-and-go traffic as well as the highway. It is a little slow off the line but once moving, it goes! Thanks Lee. Will update you if I buy ,many thanks Barry
I don't know what it is about the bug eye but I just love that car. So much character I guess.
+Clayton L I am on the same train... I would if I could!
My stock 02 is still going after 200k miles. Tough little car. Mines not as prestine as this example. That blue is immaculate.
You don’t see them like that anymore for sure! It was really an honor to drive it!
I bought a 02 WRX stock with 92k miles last year and it costed me $10k. Had only 1 owner before me and he really took great care of it. No accidents either.
+Zachary Smith very nice!
Just bought my 02 wrx today..79k miles and 1 owner
+Chris B congratulations! Now put on that axleback if it doesn't have one already!
it does!
+Leo it isn't mine, I just reviewed it! But special it is!
Leo hahaha! I sometimes reply with the app and it doesn't show the entire comment thread!
Chris B how much did you buy it for?
It's hard being a Subaru enthusiast in Texas seeing how every Subaru here holds there value like crazy!
When I went to visit Colorado it was like STi central they were going for as low 8K over there!
+GetTacoFaced guess it's time to shop in Colorado! But then you might have to watch out for the rust devil...
Good review...I own an Aspen White MY01 Australian delivered version of this car that has just clocked over 100,000kms (60,000 miles). +Brett Watson-Will yup, if it was mine it would have been BPU already! The unequal header impreza's just BEG for an exhaust bare minimum!
Loved watching this. I recently purchased an 02 Bugeye myself with just a hair over 64,000 miles on it. It's far from stock, but the previous owner took very good care of it and it came with a complete maintenance history. Favorite car I've ever driven.
+Taylor Maloney awesome! What mods does it have?
And thank you for enjoying the review!
Just bought one yesterday same exact one. 160,000 miles engine changed at 100,00 miles. Love the car.
They are super awesome. I have plans in my head if I ever end up with one myself. It is just one of those cars on the proverbial list!
Like the way you p[resented the WRX. Good for you that you know better than to launch that car. Its a rally car, not a drag car.

+petezahut93 agreed! And then there is the fact that this one is the "origin" model for the USA!
Wow all original. Beautiful. I remember when I bought one all stock back in 2005... Still have it, although no longer stock and more worn out. Still running strong.

Just picked one exactly like this with 40,000 miles for $9,500. I think it was well worth it
If you keep it clean you won't loose any money! Other than maintenance that is!
completely stock as well so i get to make it my own
You're one lucky guy! Not that many out there anymore, that's for sure!
Mistermoeshmoe HELP I’m in the market for a 2002 WRX but whenever I go to look for one everywhere I look they all say BASE or WAGON. Isn’t there a turbo model or something? I cannot find a higher trim. Any advice?
It’s Marsh All wrx’s are turbo, whether you get the base or wagon
great review! I looked 2 months to find my bugeye stock with 97k miles. Youre definately right about that.
Thanks for the props!
Numan Gun I'm going to look at one with 79k miles Saturday
+Chris B I hope it is a cream puff!
Found an STI swap with 66k for $9800! Only issue is that it has an automatic transmission
+MrTwoShot you had me going "oh yeah" until I read "automatic". I would keep looking myself.
Looking at a 02 wrx hatch tomorrow. I hope he entertains my offer. Is it just me, or does anybody else think the prices on Subarus are ridiculous. I can't help but feel that way after searching for months and months. lol

This is an awesome review man, well done.
+David Thompson thank you for the kind words! I liked doing this one a lot. Such an iconic car when we talk Subaru in the USA.
That bug eye looks cute for an impreza
cool review, I love the older WRX cars
+zutekeela I totally agree. Although the new STi is a stunner too, the older cars just add emotion to the mix. And that goes for just about any old car (especially one with a performance pedigree).
I got an 02’ bug eye for 1,900 in jersey i did the valve cover gaskets and the brake light switch and best part has 102k mi on it its great
That’s cool! How is the rust on it? I have seen videos of project cars that had pretty bad rust from the northern states.
Need for Speed Underground 1 convinced me to buy a bug eye. No regrets
Such awesome cars. Good review!
+Kevin Hitchcock thank you for watching!
Great car I have a stock 2002 bug eye and I can't bring myself to modify the car
+XxpikachuxX there is something to say about keeping it stock. Less likely to break parts that way too!
I got mine all stock for $2300 Canadian. It had 279,000km on if and the fenders were rusted to shit! I fixed the rust (mostly) and only thing I have done is saw off the airbox silencer.
+Nhlpro14 I bet they use road salt up there huh? Still going strong otherwise?
The Dutch Texan ya the motor is running strong
Man I love these cars!
They grew on me for sure!
I love the Review. I just got one about a month ago. Beautiful cars :) Lucky i got me a fully stock 03 wrx. Only Mod imma do is Exhaust and B.O.V
Take care of it man! And I approve of the mods for sure!
If I was you I would do a gfb 50/50 b.o.v or stay stock. with it . they dont like b.o.v very much unless you tune for one
i have a 2001 one its my first car. its original only the exhaust iis diffrent but the previous owner gave me the stock one
Love that EJ20 flat four rumble! That cars needs some mods!
It's going to stay stock. Were it mine however, it would have had some BPU's already! I want me some rumble!
Love this review 😄really rare find to see it in stock indeed, most i have seen are heavily modded with exhaust 😄
I'm impressed by your Impreza
It's not mine, but I'll pass the comment on to the owner!
Sti's dont have forged pistons unless its a jdm v7.
I have a silver 2002 WRX that has around 182,xxx fully stock.
+Tyler B NICE! Built to last!
Are the stock headers equal or unequal, thanx
On this model they are unequal length headers!
Great review! The car looks and sounds amazing. Do you think it is worth it? I am a college student and I am looking for a daily driver that is fun and reliable. very good car and fast and fun good review
Thanks man! I loved driving it for sure!
Nice video man!
+Michael Moreau thank you! I enjoyed making it!
that shifter knob tho
I found a stock one but dont have enough money
love the video just about to buy the same car
+Albert Adams thanks man! And enjoy it!
I just bought an 02 Wagon with 97k miles on it
+TheCardinalSpear the wagons are just as much fun I've heard!
Bugeyes are awesome!
+ItsaaMitch agreed! But you already knew that after watching the vid... ;)
I have a stock 2002 Bugeye with just over 201,000 and it still has the Original exhaust
You sir, WIN!
+The Dutch Texan. It's my daily driver that I acquired in Chicago a year ago for $3900
Not bad! What mileage did it have on it then?
+The Dutch Texan 193000-ish. Always wanted one and couldn't pass on it
Not driving the wheels off it either, good stuff! take care of it man, they are already getting that collector car status!
all stock....wow....
+TheZombaslaya pretty rare indeed!
What is better a 240sx with possibly a 2jz swap or a wrx cause at the end they will cost about the same
+Cesar Aguirre stock > modified. But for big power that 2JZ is hard to beat.
cool video
+JustinSTeam2 Airsoft GoPro Gaming thanks man!
so the impreza is different because it doesnt have a turbo...but if its called impreza wrx or impreza wrx sti or impreza sti it DOES have a turbo?
The regular impreza does indeed not have a turbo at this time. When "WRX" or "STi" is on the trunk lid it is indeed turbocharged! (Unless someone is putting badges on a vanilla Impreza and passes it off as WRX or STi or debadges the car)
Do these cars have head gasket problems or is that just with other subarus
This particular one hasn't had any problems. And I know of bugeyes that reached over 200k miles, so I think the engine is pretty solid if you keep them stock.
nice review
Thank you for enjoying it!
How's the transmission on these?
+Dominick Delgado they are OK just as long as you don't beat on them. Frequent launches from a dig ensures premature death. I had a comment from someone that their stocker had over 200K miles on it. So they can last if treated correctly!
I'm looking for a first car and there's a used car dealership a couple streets from me and they have this with 202k miles should I get it or no
+MD46ter 202k miles is a lot. If you can I would have it inspected at a Subaru dealership (pre purchase inspection).
But should i get a subaru for a first car is it reliable?
MD46ter stock ones regularly go over 200k miles and they maintain value better than other cars (which also means that they are more expensive to buy second hand).
But higher mileage cars come with high mileage problems, that is why I advocate a pre purchase inspection. It might cost you a little, but it is no where near the cost of having a major problem.
The Rear fitment on the 2nd gen wrx’s are shiittt stock. My blob looks the same as this
Function over form? Lets go with that!
lol good review mate...........buuuuutttt.........its not the first year that the impresa was in America. I'm pretty sure that the 1996 was the first year. please clearify?
2002 was the first your for the WRX in the USA!
what about the 90s imprezas then?
Not WRX's.
ok I get it now. I was thinking of people who have old imprezas and swap the jdm engine in it and put stickers all over it
+subie skyline34 are you talking about the GC8's (mean eye). Because I had the same discussion with a friend of mine and he said they are different platforms and that's why the call them GC8's instead of by the headlight type.
Does this year have electrical problems?
As far as I know the owner has never experienced an electrical malfunction.
I have the 2017 wrx sti fully modified
Nice! I've driven one that was stock with the exception of the exhaust and it was glorious!
do you speak dutch?
+Bas Manders yes I do!
Mine only has 50k but of course it's not stock 😏
If I owned it it wouldn't be stock either... Pipe, gold / bronze wheels and an STI spoiler are a must!
i can't wait to get it for my first car except it will be wagon
Nothing wrong with wagons man! More space to haul stuff too! And lower the front seats and you can make a makeshift bed when you go out camping. Win!
ok. thanks man
Found one completely stock 162K miles. 5 grand.
Nice! Got a boat load more miles than this one though!
The Dutch Texan yeah that's true haha
Bought a stock 02 wrx with 1 owner
Enjoy your unicorn! What are you going to do to it?
Grab some unequal length headers and rumble it up brother guaranteed you won't regret it
The headers are already UL, the only 2 things I would do is the STI wing and an axle back with perhaps a nice baseline tune to get a little extra power. This is a cream-puff that the owner will keep stock forever though!
Best Subaru wrx made, too bad the United States didn’t get the STI version they had in Japan
For sure, the owner actually wanted an STI!
@@TheDutchTexan yea too bad the American market is boring and never got any of the good stuff, the wrx is still great though i love it
saving up for this cant wait to work on it...SUBIEFL🐌W
did ever get it?
This is a true unicorn. It should be put in a garage and never driven hahaha. It looks prifuckingstine
+KAS470 it gets driven daily. The owner just doesn't have to go far for work!
Had a freind who had a wrx just as clean, same year completely stock... He wrapped it around a tree 3 weeks later thankfully he's ok the car is done shame
+Ryan Almeida that really is a shame indeed. Thankfully your friend made it out alive!
For sale??? : )
+Cassidy he gets that all the time. And no, it's his baby. And daily driver to boot!
+The Dutch Texan worth a try! what about trade? I just got a 98 impreza rs with 88k miles. 100% stock. exterior is probably 8.5 or 9 and interior is 9.5/10
Hahaha! No sale no trade! I do love those RS coupes tho! Very rare... and so cool!
+The Dutch Texan I'm in texas too, lmk if you come across any other clean ones. I don't want to sell my subaru because it is so pristine but I do want a similar quality 02 maybe 03
+The Dutch Texan in two years of searching I only found 2 coupes, and one was rusted out. very hard to find anywhere in the us
oh what I would give for a bone stock bugeye with 45k miles
Yup, she's ready for some tasteful mods! The kind you can control, and revert back to stock. I wouldn't tune it, just exhaust and cosmetics!
You mean PSI 6:37
Isn't it still boost tho? :)
I guess
It was pretty slow even for a turbo
I'm about 4'10 or 4'11
Aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper?
The Dutch Texan sigh yep But still a Stormtrooper nevertheless
The Dutch Texan captain Phasma makes me feel short
The Dutch Texan would you recommend one as a first car?
If you can find one that isn’t butchered and has low miles 100%.
Dat Nederlandse accent krijg je er niet uit
+berend sander nope, en das goed! Maakt een mens uniek!
my friend traded a miata he got for $900 for that 02 wrx
Not this one but one like it. The owner of this one still has it!
The Dutch Texan I meant that model of subaru lol, my mistake
Hahaha! No problem! I'd say he got a deal. Even WRX's that have lived a hard life are worth well north of 900 dollars!
interesting... dead comment section
+gonal perish new video... Thanks for the comment about the lack of comments tho!
+The Dutch Texan lol np... the other guys wasn't there when i posted :(
gonal perish And you just added to it! I call that a win-win!
All stock AND 46,000 miles?!? LIES! ALL LIES!!!
I assure you, it was completely real!
The Dutch Texan ...The Holy Grail...
I guess my semi automatic scooter is faster than that even tho it has 10hp😂😂
They sound so bad stock.
+Andrue Rendon you can't hear them, very quiet! Hence me saying that an exhaust mod would be first on the list!
