    We just got a subscription to Optics. OMG! THIS THING IS DEEP and COMPLEX!! The vast array of effects will take years to discover. Jim, we need more videos PLEASE. We will not be purchasing any more overlay packages as everything we will ever use can be built within Optics and can be saved as a preset to be modified again and again so that each effect is always different. The fun factor here is worth the small investment.

      Thanks for watching and yes there is a LOT you can do with it. It will take a while to learn it all, and of course it will take a while for me to cover it in detail. But, I will make more videos on it because it is quite fun and powerful. Thanks!

    This is incredibly interesting Jim. Obviously a massively powerful editing system, which, if someone was into doing composites, would push barriers. Even if not doing same, it would still be immensely useful and probably would be considered an essential part of a person's armoury - it's all about striving to be different for me. I am massively impressed, I know that you have skimmed the surface so far, which was very enlightening, and I sincerely hope you do some Deep Dive stuff into this. Please give my very kindest regards to the lads and lasses who have come up with this, because they are something rather special mate.

    Jim,
    Don’t know if you have the history behind this product. The origin goes all the way back to Digital Film Tools and was a filter package for stills with the blend modes , gobos, masking, and a ton of filters that were close to TopazLabs Studio2 with zone system capabilities. They somehow turned it over to Tiffen who called it Tiffen DFX which added all of the Tiffen optical filters to Digital FilmTools. After their version 4 of DFX Tiffen stopped supporting it and it was back to Digital Film Tools for a while before Optix was brought out. Optix has most of the features from Digital Film Tools and DFX except for the various proprietary soft filters that were digital versions of the various portrait , glamour, and boudoir optical filters. They were really good and made Tiffen DFX worth its weight in gold for portraits, glamour, and boudoir photography. The current version of Optix is very powerful and the new features just reinforce my belief that still photography and cinematography/videography are merging technologies even though the art forms are so different. All the best.

    • @borisfxlearn
      @borisfxlearn 2 года назад +3

      Yes, Boris FX acquired Digital Film Tools and has updated the interface and added many of our tools from film effects and animation software. In fact the same original team from DFT is still here with us making Optics. Glad you like Optics. 😀

    Nice introduction video Jim. I’ve been using it on and off for about 2 years and there’s nothing else like it. Often I’ll simply use it to enhance a sun star or just apply one of the film stocks, which are some of the best in any product out there. You can be as creative as you want to be with it. The UI could do with a little more refinement in future updates, but it’s pretty intuitive. The initial investment is a little high (your coupon will help!), but I found my upgrade to the latest version to be very reasonable. Look forward to seeing more videos soon. Cheers.

    That's quite the spectrum of creativity offered. What is even more impressive is the level of control it gives you with each filter and preset it offers. Do you have any idea how many times per year they offer updates? I'm just thinking it might be better in the long run to purchase a permanent license?

    • @JimNix

      Hi Tremain and thanks for watching. It does offer a really wide array of options for creativity for sure. I am not clear on how often updates come out though, as the software is relatively new to me. I am guessing there is one major upgrade each year but other than that I am just not sure. Thanks.

    Hey, Jim....I've just download a trial of Optics & I see they have a Black Friday special that I'm contemplating. However, I already have Photoshop & Luminar Neo (not the subscription, though), both of which I use often, so would you suggest adding Optics to my list of editing software. I use Lightroom as my standard 'go to' for photo processing (I know you're not a fan of Adobe software!) with a bit of extra touching up in Neo, but I've taken up photo manipulation as a hobby so I use Photoshop for that then often finish in Neo for colour grading. But the effects in Optics look amazing....so would you still recommend Optics even though I have Neo? I know it does a lot more with 'special effects', so...maybe I'm talking myself into it. Neo is a lot easier to use, though.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Год назад

      hi Andy and thanks, and yes Neo is quick and easy to use, and very powerful, but you cannot do the same stuff in Neo that you can do in Optics - Optics has so much amazing lighting effects etc (as I show here) that I find myself doing those things in Optics and then going to Neo to finish off the image - it's a great combo, although there is not really an integrated workflow between the two - but still, lots of fun you can have 😀

    • @JimNix

      Thanks Brian and I am using it standalone but they say it works as a plugin from LR or PS only. I haven't tried it with the others. I am guessing you can send an image from On1 over here but I don't think it would return - but that's a guess as I have been traveling and haven't had time to try all the various options yet.
