This video will show you the installation of the SafeRacks 4 ft. x 8 ft. Overhead Garage Storage Rack.
Thanks for sharing the information.
Advice for who wants to buy a rack: I made a mistake when I purchased an 8' x 3' and realized that the studs in my house are 2 feet apart and I did not know before I got the rack. It was not possible to mount the 3 feet width rack, returned it, and got the 8'x4'. (None of the instruction videos on youtube mention this issue with 3 feet wide rack)
Thanks dude. Great Video and good job. That last part about doubling up on the horizontal bar when install 2 racks was awesome. I had the same worry as you. Now I know what to do!
Future reference. You might want to show how you measured to put the mounting brackets up.
Exactly, what’s the measurements between both mounting brackets..? Side to side.?
96" 1/2 x 28" 1/2. I just finished mine installing this weekend..
@@avarageplayer200 any tips on the measurement work? I just started and am a little concerned for that part.
I've just received the last package ---(12/3 and 12/8). We're going to install them this weekend. Thanks for the the guidance.
And u bought to early you just missed the Costco sale basically buy one get one free from dec 25 2020 until Jan 25 2021
@@Jericho_bella On Costco.com, they were only $160 off, which makes them $240 after $160 discount. =( Have they gone on sale for BOGO? I need 4 of them!
Just finished my first one. I got 4 of them so I will need to take 2 back since they are huge
Great video, much better than saferacks instruction video!!
Are your joist perpendicular or parallel to your garage door? Mine are parallel so the racks are not sitting how i want them.
Same question here. Mine are parallel too so installing as shown in video will run the ceiling brackets parallel to joist. Does this compromise stability? Instructions from saferacks isn't quite clear about it.
What is the measurement from ceiling to the garage door rails? And how many inches did you end up on TOP of the rack? Thx
great vid and i'm looking forward to doing it myself as well. thank you
Thanks for doing this. I am starting it in a few days
Is it a good idea to install these racks on top of the garage door? Won’t it be more difficult to do maintenance in the future? I wanna do the same because it looks nicer but i was wondering if it’s worth it.
Definitely worth it. You just need to keep the garage door down when you need to work on the racks or grab anything being stored.
Did you run ur ceiling brackets horizontal I think if u have two racks on the same ceiling joyce that’s not recommended?
Soundtrack slaps.
Are your joist perpendicular or parallel to your garage door? Mine are parallel too so installing as shown in video will run the ceiling brackets parallel to joist. Does this compromise stability? Instructions from saferacks isn't quite clear about it.
This was a good video to follow, since SafeRacks doesn't currently have their own available at this time, thanks!
Yeah. . . bought two sets from COSTCO with "$100 Installation." The installer showed up two months late, spent 30 seconds in the garage and said "I can't do it. I will give you 1/2 what you paid for them and take them off your hands." Told him to get the hell out of my garage and took them back to COSTCO and got my money back just out of principle. I bet this slimball has storage units filled with half price racks he resells for a "discount" plus installation.
We bought ours from Costco and the installer showed up within a week and did the work. Sounds like you may have had a scheduling problem or live in the sticks.
They wasn’t recall paperwork, both were about using the black fasteners to keep the rack in place
Did yours come with enough lag screws\bolts? My set of two only came with 8 lag screws. Does that sound right?
Each horizontal piece that mounts against the ceiling takes 2 lag bolts. So for two sets or 8 horizontal pieces, you should have 16 lags.
@@repairsinstallsandbuilds thanks I think I’m still waiting another big box then.
Nice work. Thanks
Just wondering how these are holding up. Is it sturdy, any con you want to add?
They’ve been great, no issues at all. Both are loaded with 8 big bins each. No cons at all.
Hello, the lag screws that come with that are 1/4 in screws? The instructions online do not say.
Yes, I believe they’re 1/4”.
Can anyone mention what size screws, nuts, bolts used for this installation, especially the bolts going into ceiling. I’d like to just go to Home Depot and get my own instead of buying their kit.
May be a silly question: Should Ceiling brackets need to be fully attached to ceiling? I’m working on this and see one of my ceiling bracket ended up almost there but not fully before lag screws gave up on me. Its kind of ~1mm gap from roof and consistent.
Should be fine, might just be some movement of the racks when you load them with stuff.
Hello… I like your garage floor did you post any videos on how to do epoxy similar to yours.. thank you so much for help
Thank you, unfortunately I don’t have a video of doing the epoxy floors but I’ll be sure to make one next time.
Ok, I am planning on a similar installation. So, did you stack (2) brackets 1 on top of the other for the double rack installation above your garage door? Thanks for the info!
The two brackets are back to back, not on top of one and other.
@@repairsinstallsandbuilds So, do you mean side by side? Thanks again for the info!
Damn how close is your garage door when open?
Inserting the screws just on the overhead 2x4's will hold the weight ?
Yes, it’s 8 large lag screws so there’s plenty of support.
Dammit I just ordered 2 4x8' 's with the additional hangars but just thought about the direction of the joist too.. Anyone have a KB built home know if they go front to back or Side to side (home is only about a year old). Ill have to wait til I get back in a week to check it out I guess.. I know they did some wompy things that threw we off being some sections dont follow the every 16" stud rule so who knows.. thanks for the video... the one from their site isn't the best lol and its like 7 years old!
KB build here. They run 2x6 joists side to side, mounted over concrete block, spaced every 24” (in Florida). Keep in mind building code may differ by state.. I mounted this exact rack perpendicular on 2 joists per bracket, one on each corner of the garage, opposite end of the garage door. Feels very sturdy to me.
Is there a way to install the 2nd unit elsewhere say far away from the first one, with no doubling up on the racks?
Absolutely! They come with enough brackets to mount individually.
Can they be installed on A-Frame joists in a shed?
I don’t see why they couldn’t be.
Great video though it did help!
Approximately how long did it take you to install this unit?!?Thanks for Ohio
It took about two hours for the first rack and another hour for the second.
hi, How much was the drop from the ceiling for your rack installation?
I installed mine at about 18” from the ceiling, so there’s a small gap between the bottom of the rack and the garage door. These racks have a range of 12”-21”.
SafeRacks direction manual is lousy. SafeRack does not recommend running parallel. According to what i read. But it doesn't say don't do it. I attached mine on 6 different joists which would be perpendicular. If you go parallel it would be 2 joists, would work but not as strong. Just have to figure out the weight and what direction you would want it to go. Hope I didn't confuse anyone, just my opinion.
We put ours up pretty quick and the instructions were just fine. We also watched the SafeRacks installation video, which was very helpful.
can you install both the pieces in an L shape?
Yes, you can install them in an L shape.
Why didn't you show the double one. I read you need 2 vertical and 2 horizontal struts for support not just horizontal.
I bought the 2 x 8. Nowhere is the distance between the ceiling mounts (short side) mentioned. Is it exactly 24”?
48.5” is the width of the shelf. And 96” for distance on the length, or distance between to two top brackets.
Assemble the long lower portion and measure it.
ouch! what happen to your thumb?
Why doesn’t anyone who reviews these systems show how sturdy they are after putting them up?
I just installed three of these kits, they do away from side to side, basically because it’s a small bolt holding the vertical bars to the ceiling joist bracket.
Why are all of these garage rack videos so short and lacking so much detail!?!
I keep finding metal on the ceiling.
Could be metal plates preventing you drilling into water lines, electrical, or gas.
Same here. My house was built in 2004. I just end up using dry walk anchors (Use 1/4") and add 3 dry anchors per/bracket. Works great!
@@paulnguyen3122 I have to try that. My racks still on the floor.
@@georgebunny1910 as added support, going to add 2x4 to wall stud to connect one side of rack (length side). Just installed this morning
I just got mine from Costco but unsure if it will be safe to install. I have i-joists in most of the ceilings in my house, including the garage, so I'm not sure the lag screws will have enough hold. Need to contact the manufacturer and confirm. I don't know if adding a 2x4 along the length will even help as that will need to be secured as well.
I did stumble across this video from Topp Rax that showed how unstable this rack can be. I think the clip is pretty old and obviously biased. I was wondering if you or any of the other viewers here have personally experienced such or if you're all 100% satisfied.

I just finished installing the first of 2 racks that i bought at Costco. The racks are not nearly as flimsy as the video you posted a link too. I have 24” on center ceiling joists and the rack is holding quite well. I am 200lbs and i hung on the rack with all my weight on each corner to test it. No concerns at all. No wobble unless i really work it. Unfortunately i dont have much experience with i beam construction but the racks are legitimate quality. No regrets here!
Did you ever install this rack on your i-joist? I have the same issue.
Did you ever install them? Per the installation manual (highlighted in red in the original text) you need to have a minimum 2" of wood for the screw to penetrate.:
WARNING, DO NOT EXCEED THE WEIGHT LIMITS
4’ x 8’ Frame 600 lbs. 4’ x 6’ Frame 500 lbs.
3’ x 8’ Frame 500 lbs. 3’ x 6’ Frame 400 lbs.
2’ x 8’ Frame 400 lbs. 2’ x 6’ Frame 300 lbs.
4’ x 4’ Frame 300 lbs.
WARNING: This weight limit is based on a statically loaded storage
rack anchored to a wood framed garage. The joists must have a
minimum 2” x 6” (standard lumber) cross section, 24” (or less) apart,
with at least 2” of penetration from each lag screw used. For truss
framed garage ceiling structures, joists with a 2” x 4” (bottom truss
cord) cross section is acceptable. The weakest point in this system is the
frame of your house.

Just following up that saferack has had recalls for bolts sheering off with numerous complaints and some injuries. My rack had a faulty bolt that nearly killed me when it collapsed I was hit. Their metal side support rails folded like paper when it broke. I wouldnt trust their hardware and would use additional chains and your own bolts just to be safe.
@MichaelMerritt yeah, I didn't trust it at all and ended up returning it. Bought a shelving unit for the time being while I work on other areas until I can come back to this. I'm probably going to do something with wall support instead.
Good job but music was way hot
