I don't bother with many legacy sequels anymore because it seems like most of them are living off nostalgia and that is a big reason why the last 10-15 years have been the worst era for mainstream Hollywood movies. I actually gave this a shot; it was better than I expected and a big improvement over the 3rd movie. It had no chance to match the first 2 movies and I think some things could've been better like less time with the daughter drama, but I would still go with a 7/10.

I personally loved the introduction of the old school music and songs into the movie. I honestly think they knocked it out the park. With any sequel living up to the original is a tough ask for any movie, some go above and beyond and some dont, I feel this one did what it needed to do to keep us entertained, ask your self if there was no original Beverly hills cop and this came out first how would you feel about it.

Beverly Hills Cop 2 features better chemistry between the trio for me, a stronger villain in Jürgen Prochnow (great henchwoman with Brigitte Nielsen as well) and best of all, Tony Scott's glossy visuals making it the best looking entry. Scott really was the precursor to Michael Bay.

Woke up bright and early to watch this one. Can’t remember the last time I did that for a Netflix film! Anyway, I enjoyed this movie. It’s not the epic savior for Eddie Murphy’s career, but if a fifth film was greenlit, I would look forward to watching that one. Overall, the movie plays it safe. It’s essentially The Force Awakens of Beverly Hills Cop films. But just because the movie plays it safe doesn’t mean there isn’t a good bit of enjoyment to be had. Axel Foley is still very enjoyable to watch and Eddie himself feels more excited to play this character more than he was in Beverly Hills Cop III, even if that’s not a high bar. When it comes to the other cast members, Joseph Gordan-Levitt and Kevin Bacon are nice to see on screen and having Judge Reinhold as Billy Rosewood and John Ashton as John Taggart hit some solid nostalgia buttons. Now, there’s nothing in this movie that’s particularly great. But for the amount of easily dispensable Netflix movies I’ve watched over the last few weeks, this blows a lot of those out of the water in quality. Dolemite Is My Name is still the best live action Eddie Murphy project in decades though.

What I think is disappointing as a fan is that this never got a theatrical release and Top Gun Maverick did. In fairness, the latter film had scenes that probably play the best on the big screen, but I was never a fan of the original Top Gun and only saw Maverick because I got dragged by someone else. I thought it did what it was supposed to do. It gave the fans of the original what they wanted. I enjoyed the original BHC far more, but I figured as long as this was better than the 3rd instalment, we were okay. It looks good. After all this time, I don't know that you want to deviate too much from the original and try create something totally new, but at least 90% of the main actors are back.

This one had its moments but unfortunately it suffered from the problems of so many of these legacy films as well as the issues that screw up so many modern films for me, but most particularly Axel just didn’t feel like Axel to me. I wanted more Rosewood and Taggert but I did enjoy the new character Abbott. Didn’t care much for the daughter, and it really annoys me when they bring in a female character to upstage the legacy male lead with ease. His daughter was better at creating cover stories than Axel was and that’s essentially his particular specialty.

I think the movie will be much better if they teaming up Axel & Joseph Gordon Levitt's character for the entire film and remove the daughter plotline completely. Rosewood is enough to become Axel's motivation to come to Beverly Hills again. Also Rosewood should've join the team sooner. They could've found him in the middle of the movie not towards the end
And they should've bring Paul Reiser to Beverly Hills this time 🤭

The father-daughter subplot was drawn out far too long and there are scenes like the "villa-buying" scene where the comedy doesn't work and feels sort of forced and awkward. Rosewood was absolutely far too absent for most of the film.
As a whole it was ok, so lets hope it will be popular enough for them to make a 5th film. As it stands the first film is still by far the best.

Great review and spot on. Didn't expect much and put it on while doing something else, but it was good enough to suck me into watching until the end. I think they played it too safe by rehashing the same plot, music and jokes but perhaps it was this familiarity that made it comforting for those who grew up watching the very first BHC movie. I'm not sure if I could objectively say it was a "good" movie but it was good enough for those of us older audience. I wonder what the younger kids who never saw the origina BHC thought of it.

Its a very pleasant surprise in an age where i was prepared to be disappointed and ruined an chances of more BHC movies, but NO!
This movie respects itself, it respects the og fans, and it respects Filmmaking as a whole to entertain new people.
I give it a 9/10 because it feels like its missing something, but i think you answered that for me, i just want more of it! Haha its missing a new next movie, and I believe we will get one.
They might have been holding back to save some good stuff for the next one, and i hope im right. I think we need at least 1 more Beverly Hills Cop movie.

  • @Its_ReneeNicole
    @Its_ReneeNicole Месяц назад +1

I appreciated this movie because it's part of the beloved franchise that I grew up watching and I can still watch the first and second Beverly Hills cop over and over. I had high hopes for this movie, however, the writing completely missed Mark.
Where did the daughter come from and why were they so strange. It wasn't properly addressed and it was a huge distraction. Who is axel Foley today. What is his point of view. No one is going to address his age at all? He clearly is not the street smart slick talker he used to be.
His demeanor seems more like the Eddie Murphy from Dr. Dolittle. It was not believable as the street smart cop who could trick anyone with his wiles. I was so confused at who this character was. He's not the same. They should've addressed that and had him have a point of view. Was he trying to recapture his youth? Was he an older guy with swag? I mean Samuel Jackson could've played the part better than Eddie Murphy at this point. Because this Eddie Murphy is so suburban and out of touch with this character at this point.
For him to play a street smart cop he needed to have a Director and a writer that would get him back in the same mindset. It just didn't happen for me. So this movie was goofy and not believable. And the plot super obvious so we all figured it out in the first 20 minutes. So I guess this was pretty much a labor of love and done for fun. Obviously the budgets are not the same so you can't expect the same level of quality as the first two, but I would've hoped they would've had better writers to have Eddie Murphy be believable.
Then to give him a contrived conflict with the daughter who we've never heard of, and have that relationship attempt to work itself out throughout this movie, just did not make sense.
The Axel Foley that I knew would have never abandoned his daughter. The dude had integrity. He flew to cali because captain bogamil was injured. He convinced the guys to investigate the alphabet crimes. Now he’s a goofy dude who abandoned his only daughter. How dumb and awful. Tyler Perry has enough of this trope owe didn’t need it here. Who TF wrote this. Disappointed.

As a huge fan of the first three BHC movies, yes, I like the 3rd one too, I had such incredibly high hopes for this movie ... but I'm sorry, it was terrible.
It felt like Murphy was sleep walking through the entire thing, he had none of the spark and charm of Axel from the previous movies and when he tried to give lines that would usually sizzle with Axel energy they just fell flat. As usual for Netflix and Hollywood they made Axel a deadbeat dad who had abandoned his wife and daughter because of course they would. His daughter's character was so annoying, she really did drag the movie down constantly berating Axel or proving how much smarter she was and she needed no dad to help her out.
As for Taggart and Rosewood, yeah, again, no spark. They just had the actors, when together which was hardly at all, just rehash old lines from the other movies. I feel they were all just to old for this. Taggart especially, considering how old he was in the first movie 40 years ago looks like he should be in a retirement home and poor Rosewood appears for a second at the start then a few brief minutes at the end and that's it.
This was a huge fail for me and again shows that sometimes a great franchise should just be left alone.

You have to use the old music. It wasn't a bad move. Not using it would be a mistake. BTW, the 3rd movie was still awesome.

It's no Ride or Die and definitely no Top Gun Maverick but this was a lot of fun! Good cast, good action, and a lack of if drama fir thr most part. I didnt hate the daughter but can't argue you and Cody's issues with her. I wouldn't have minded this in theaters but it was pretty good. 7.8/10 Let's do another one. Or maybe 48 Hours 3!

I completely agree. They needed to be more billy in it not jist afew minutes at the beginning and end. Could of also done without that terrible hiphop voice correction version of axel f at the end of the movie. I also would of liked it if kevin bacon wasnt the bad guy but a red herring into thinking he was ganna be the bad guy then just do a complete 180 and it turns out to be someone else because kevin bacon is always the bad guy, not that he was bad far from it, it just would have been refreshing. The film dosent flow smoothly like the first two but it was alot better than bc3 and i had a good time with it and at the end of the day, thats what we watch movies for

I wanted to love this movie I really did. It was great seeing so many of the original actors show up. But I kept waiting for the excitement, the humor, and for craps sake, Eddie Murphy's iconic chuckle! Where were they? I stuck it out but when I was done I immediately watched the original so I could laugh and remember how good it was.

Yeah I kinda agree with you about the directing choice for this film. Infact there is another problem I personally had with this film is how it had almost the exact same set up like Bad Boys 4 another Jerry Bruckheimer production involving corruption in the justice system and the cartel. Personally I think BHC4 should've done something different in order to have avoided that comparison.
As for the daughter, yeah she was as cody leach put it a wet blanket and she definitely could've used a bit more axel foley like 100%.

Having just finished Axel F, I can safely safely say that it's much better than The Force Awakens. It's got a lot of callbacks for sure, but the focus on Axel's connecting with his daughter and being more grownup gives it a new angle. It also helps that Beverly Hills Cop is a different series than Star Wars and each film is its own separate adventure.

I loved Joseph Gordon Levitt in this. Him and Murphy had great chemistry. That scene with the helicopter was a blast.
On a negative note, the actress playing his daughter Janie, though stunningly gorgeous I found her acting at times unconvincing, but maybe it was because she was playing up the fact she was trying to keep her guard up around her father, but there were other times when sounded like she was just saying saying her lines instead of living her lines.

I loved the movie and felt it was better than 3. And I gotta disagree with you about the music. I do understand that it might be repetitive reusing music, but I'd rather hear the music from #1 again instead of the new stuff that was in this movie.

    1. Beverly Hills Cop
    2. Beverly Hills Cop II
    3. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
    4. Beverly Hills Cop III

You can't beat the soundtracks to the first two, so why not make the new one out their greatest hits.

My 2 cents review: an okay addition to the buddy cop genre but a fantastic entry into the Beverly Hills Cop franchise! I loved it. But I think you made some good points on overuse of nostalgia.
    1. No need to use "Heat is On" again. Should have found another hit from the 80s that fit.
    2. The film felt gaggy in some places like the meter maid chase. Felt like the film stopped to tell a joke.
    3. The film was too clean for my liking, cinematically speaking. I actually enjoyed it in SD rather than HD. The Hi-Def made it feel too modern when it should have felt a little more grainy somehow to capture the older movie vibe.
But overall, I loved. The helicopter chase was a standout for me. Couldn't stop laughing.😂😂
