You have to stand next to the player you are knifing for a while, this is due to the game waiting the set time for the stabing kill animation to run through.
i have that idea sometimes too, but its just the gamertag and healthbar and alot of people just spray. but if you're sure it doesnt work i recommend testing it with a friend

At range they can still kill you but can't see you but you can't go In front of them or they'll see your gamertag
