I keep (and breed) my dwarf crayfishes in a community tank. They are rather sensitive, so I'm not that positive they will do without a filter. For 2 - get something like 25 liters. Sand and some hiding spaces (rocks are enough). Aquatic plants are nice too as they don't do any harm to plants. They tend to fight a little - usually it looks quite intensive, but they are still fine to keep in pairs/little groups. They can eat cheap fishfood, if kept with nano shrimps they might catch one from time to time. Greetings from Poland!
The cool thing about orchid mantids is that they don't hide in the flowers they mimick, they hide on the plant's stem because their camouflage is so good and they look so much like a flower that they actually attract bees and flies better than the flowers themselves. The species you got is also really awesome
This community is so awesome. Thank you everyone for being so positive and helpful! Just wanted to point it out. :) Awesome video as always Petko. I can't imagine where you'll put all those new additions, LOL, but I know you'll find a place. ;)
That mantis is a female. Looks like L6 or L7, it should get another 10 to 12 months old. Also don't feed it crickets, they're not good for them! Also the Anthia will not get bigger. They have wings, which means they are adult. Adult insects don't molt any more.
Fruchtpudding, thank you also for all your additions to The Dark Den! You are awesome. I want a Mantis so bad! I caught a few wild ones years ago,of course they didn't live very long so that sucked, but while I had them they were amazing!
Hi Petko, You said in your vid that you’ve got a problem with mould in your ff’s. Next time when you make a culture try this: Put an apple in a mixer with oats, blend it till you get a consistency of a modelling clay. If it’s too thick add little bit of water or if it’s too runny add more oats. Little bit of sugar on top, and job done! One apple = one culture. Hope that helps ;)
Hey man, I just recently stumbled upon your channel and your started a huge interest in me for insects and arachnids. I always loved animals but I never really saw the beauty in an invertebrate. I always wanted to start photography but couldn't decide which subject I would like to do (portraits, landscape, abstract etc.) but I managed to find a website that list absolutely every species of animals in my country (Switzerland) and the goal of this website is to list and classify species by date of observation, localisation etc. So, thanks to you Dark Den :), I will start animal photography tommorrow as a passion and also to help this website from a university to list species while I take pictures :) So in conclusion, thank you so much for lighting this passion for insect in me
After stalking your channel for about a week, and trying to watch all your videos, I decided to become a patreon - my very first! I love your enthusiasm and dedication to your hobby. Keep it up!
I Literally screamed "TERRAPLATZZA!" when I saw the notification for this video XDD Btw just wanted to say thanks for making these videos, you've helped me get over my fear of spiders. I was never an extreme arachnophobe but they did creep me out. Glad to say that a few days ago I saw a wolf spider in my bathroom and my response was "Oh hey there little guy!". I usually kill all insects I see but the spider did not bother me. So once again, thanks and keep making videos!
All this new additions are a dream come true!! I already thought you had a very good arthropod channel but this is a whole new level. Keep going, Petko!!!
Crayfish are known to be very versatile aquatic creatures, most commonly found in ponds and swamps. If you want to put a filter on it you can which will prevent you from having to do as many water changes or you can leave them in the water that they currently are in but make sure the water has movement so it’s aerated.
You can never have too much animals!I can't believe how much animals you got an I LOVE THE CESTED GECKO!!!!! Also the tortoise is sooo cute❤️! Petko you are awesome! And shout out to the people who support him!!
All of your new additions are awesome. That scorpion is huge. I like the smaller one too. He was funny turning around with his threat posture after you gave it a poke.
When picking up a scorpion never use tweezers without padding. To pick up a Scorpion add adhesive foam or sponge to the end of the tweezers or you could pick it up just behind The telson (venom bulb). I noticed you tried to pick up the large scorpion with non padded tweezers
Congratulations on your new additions! A tip or two for keeping the millipedes: get rid of any coco fibre in the enclosure. It is known to cause impaction in millipedes. These creatures mainly eat rotting leave litter and white rotten wood. Just fill the enclosure with these things from your local deciduous forest and change it when it got eaten up. At least 10 cm high or more. Also add sepia bone to it since millipedes need to incorporate calcium into their exoskeleton.
Am loving the new additions Petko, I just hope you live in a big apartment! Those little black and white beetles look really cool. As always, another great video - very interesting, informative and fun, thanks Petko.
Apparently thats what a lot of people do! I just don't get how you would do feedings or maintenance. Plus there would be a lot of dead prey on the floor beneath.
@@Rambo-x9l I "kept" a Nephila (she was the one who decided to move in) on my patio several years ago. For feeding, I would just toss prey into her web. As long as the insect wasn't too heavy, the web would catch it. Their silk is very strong, and very sticky. It doesn't tear too easily and most things can't escape. Initially, the big disturbance of me tossing things into her web startled her. Over time, she got accustomed to it and would pounce the instant she felt something land on it. For cleanup, I just positioned a garbage can underneath her web, so all of her poops and discarded boluses would fall in there. Easy peasy.
Found your channel just a few days ago, and I've pretty much been watching it non-stop every chance I've gotten to sit by the computer. Love your content, keep up the good work~
Those crayfish are pretty hardy but will do better (like every aquatic animal) in an aquarium where the temperature, ph, ammonia levels etc are constant. But they might just do fine if you don't overfeed and do a waterchange of (I would say 30-50%) once every three days. But be sure you don't keep them on a wrong temperature because if you do, it might have troubles eating. But they are great pets!
Thank you for making this video, Petko! I found it super interesting. Unfortunately, I don't know much about keeping most of the animals you've got, but I do have some spiny leaf insects! The female is huge and she's laying eggs, four have hatched already. I've wanted a mantis for ages! I've kept geckos in the past, and if you need some tips for your crested gecko I can give you a few starting tips. They will enjoy a tall enclosure that they can climb around in, about 20 gallons (75 litres) is a good minimum size to keep one gecko in. I kept mine in a 40 gallon (150 litres) aquarium, but there was heaps of extra room for them to climb around in. This also left room for me to scape in, so the tank was great for the geckos and looked really good for me. Also, make sure they have a range of temperatures, so if they get too hot or cold, they can move around to adjust their temperature. I used heat mats and stones for mine, but there might be better options. Use your moss for the substrate, they love it, and it helps keep the enclosure moist. They also need special lighting, because they are nocturnal. There's probably places on the internet you can find more info, but for now I hope this helps! Nice work again, keep the videos coming! :) And come to Australia some time!! :D
It's entirely possible to keep them (the crayfish) in unfiltered water for a short period - they're tiny at the moment so aren't adding much bioload to the water. However you should have some sort of pump/airstone for surface agitation and also ensure small daily water changes with tapwater treated with a dechlorinator like seachem prime. Invertebrates are very sensitive to ammonia so you should try and get a filtered tank setup asap.
Some of your new additions are so pretty. I have never kept crayfish so I can't speak from first hand experience with them, but my advice for them would be this, going off what I know about some fish aquariums in general. A filter is recommended, as it would help aerate the water for you and keep the water quality up, or you could use an air stone to aerate it. Without either of those, I would do 50-100% water change daily, to ensure the crayfish wouldn't suffer from dirty water or suffocation. Without an air stone, I believe (I could be mistaken) that it is recommended that you give them a branch, or stone, or something to allow them to come up out of the water for extra oxygen. It is also advisable to have a lid of some sort, as they could escape, from what I've heard. For permanent housing something around the size of 10 gallons (38 liters) is usually the minimum, some animals need more. I hope this helps at all.
Awesome new additions! I especially love your mantis and vinegaroon. The camel spider is pretty vicious looking, and jeez that Heterometrus sp. scorpion is a beast.
AAAAAAAA !!! I LAUGHED SO HARD when you messed with the scorpion "he's so angry! "..you had a happy surprised tone to your voice.....you tease him but weren't mean at all.🏆 You set an excellent example of being a kind and brave human!
I don't normally comment on anything; but I've been having an incredibly terrible day and just wanted to thank you. Watching your video on my lunch break at work has given me my first smile today. Keep doing what you're doing!
Whoa, a 22 minute Dark Den video. You weren't kidding on Instagram. #weneedthreevideosperweek EDIT: I'm so friggin happy that you finally got a G. pulchripes! That's my favorite species
I would recommend a sponge filter if not a powerfilter. Crustaceans are sensitive to metals in the water like copper and I’ve heard that any oxidation from metal will kill them. For two of them I would get at least a 20 gallon that is longer and wider than it is tall. Diet wise they are heavily opportunistic omnivores that will eat just about anything that hits the bottom of the tank. I fed mine cichlid pellets and would treat it with little pieces of turkey or fish. The filter is important to keep introducing oxygen into to water as a primary function and to clean water secondary. Their are also lots of easy research for crayfish on RUclips alone for more info. So do some research and I hope this was helpful
They are actually quite sensitive to water quality, animals like shrimp are notorious for being sensitive with the water quality. Typically if you have a good set up you would only need to do 25% water change every week but since you dont have a biological and mechanical filter daily water change would be the best. I'd say about 15-20% water change everyday would be fine, ofcourse you could do more. I recomend a 10 gallon tank for your crayfish. Keep up with the videos man! Mabuhay from the Philippines! ✌
You should put a name sticker on your animal enclosures so you don’t forget their names. Love the new arrivals, can’t wait for them to be in their own enclosures and in feeding videos.
okk... . It would be really cool to make an enclosure for the beetles around the size of devil's or something like that and then glue a glass cross in the centre so you divide the enclosure in to 4 squares -I think that with sand and some dead bushes it would look really cool
Hey Petko, I just wanted to say I am a huge fan of your videos and I love watching all of them all the way through. I'm not really allowed to have creepy crawlies in my house, but I recently managed to catch a little jumping spider and I'm keeping him as a pet. I was actually going to name him Petko out of inspiration of you. But I let my boyfriend name him instead because he typically hates spiders and anything creepy crawly, so when he gave me a name he like other than "squish" or "dead" as I suspected him to say, I 'jumped' on the idea. So, little buddy's name is Scar Lord. You've really inspired me to learn more about arachnids and of the like and I so appreciate it!
Two words. MORE GECKOS! Also really like the camel spiders, vinegarroon, and the turtle. Me and my wife are from Arizona so we love to see your desert species. Maybe do a short desert themed video soon? Thank you!
Spoochie I was equally stoked about the tortoise. Definitely a curveball to the collection that I didn't expect. Way to diversify your collection, Petko. 👍
Christmas came early at the Dark Den!!! Petko I am so jealous. I have been wanting a crested gecko for a long while! It’s great that you also have impulse buys, sometimes that can be bad but you will do great. I’m so excited for you man. Good luck.
Satan seems like a great addition to your collection! Beautiful and active. He rested on the side of the enclosure rather than the hide so perhaps he will hang out in the open enough to get some good films and photos.
Your videos were helpful to me because I was babysitting my friends tarantula and did not understand it. Now I am much more fascinated in arachnids because of you and even had fun remodeling the enclosure for my friends tarantula and making a video! Thanks!
Also, I am a total reptile person, I only watch this channel because I love your passion and skill. I am so excited to see that applied to some reptiles! Herpetology all the way!
aaa finally something i know about!! dwarf orange crayfish need an aquarium of at least 5 gallons (about 18 litres) and they do need filtered water. You can potentially find some chemicals to detoxify water so you can cycle it with them inside, I use seachem prime but I don't know how accessible that is in croatia. or you can risk cycling without it and just do frequent water changes, but inverts are super sensitive to nitrites so watch them carefully. congrats on all your new friends!!
I really like this guy and I love watching him but this episode kind of bothers me. He often seems to acquire animals before knowing anything about them or even having a set up ready. It just seems irresponsible for someone in the animal media to do. I could stomach it through out the invertebrates because it really isn't hard to throw something together there....but a tortoise...... not knowing a tortoise species is how we end up with endless amounts of sulcatas with no homes. Because people don't realize that some tortoises pretty much grow to require similar care to small barn animals... He can do better than this...
I would just like to say, that you inspired me to get my first tarantula, an A. avic. And today I got my second, a G. pulchripes. Your videos are so helpful and informative! You are amazing!
Hi I'm a fairly new subscriber but I have fallen in love with this channel, your videos are AWESOME i love how you show both the good and the bad and always work to do right by your animals. I dont know much about bugs (which is how i found your channel, I wanted to learn more) but I do know a bit about reptiles and cresties are such AMAZING little geckos. I hope you enjoy your little one as much as i enjoy my own. They can be such tenacious eaters and really have their own personalities that shine through when you work with them. Im excited to see future videos and see all these beautiful creatures thrive under your care. Thank you for making such amazing videos and keep up the awesome work! Natasha
That was a really cool video! Thank you! I really enjoy the videos where you make the new enclosures for them. Hopefully we will get to see you make all the new homes for them.
Hi there Petco, I'd keep the crayfish in a ~10 gallon (~40 litres) tank, for now I'd be keeping them with 50% water changes daily if you'll keep them in that plastic tub, also give them some hiding spots, some 3-4 inches (7~10cm) long pieces of 1 inch (25mm) PVC pipe should work quite well
Thank you patrons for helping to keep Petko and the Dark Den going. Love watching your channel Dark Den, Petko, I've learnt a lot about Tarantula's and thanks to you, I have started the hobbit, I've now have six, Tarantula's and I will be expecting a black Asian forest Scorpion. 😊🦂🕷️
I love your channel! i just started watching it Friday and I'm so fascinated by all of your animals and how you care for them. Keep up the good work!!!
Can we call the centipede Diablo please?
Oh yes!
Omg yes

Elemental Phoenix when they are adult then has every gender wings but they need to be adult
Oh, then those beetles are much smaller then I assumed, thanks for the info
Hey at least you don't need a bigger enclosure :D

you don't need a proper cage for them, just a corner of a room.
at least, that is what i have heard from an owner of one.

It's entirely possible to keep them (the crayfish) in unfiltered water for a short period - they're tiny at the moment so aren't adding much bioload to the water.

I love solifugae! I'm actually impressed they were so calm, I thought they're usually very skittish and fast.
When you touched the scorpion I literally yelled "DON'T TOUCH HIM"😂😂
Two words. MORE GECKOS! Also really like the camel spiders, vinegarroon, and the turtle. Me and my wife are from Arizona so we love to see your desert species. Maybe do a short desert themed video soon? Thank you!
theres one bad thing about this video... it ends :(
Nemeziz x I know his video is extremely great to watch. I love his Tarantulas. They so cute
Facts to that oml😊
Omgosh.. The lil mantis! How freakkkkkkkn adorable.. 🖤
8:56 I screamed out awww so loudly everyone in my house heard me
that is a cutie
Spoochie I was equally stoked about the tortoise. Definitely a curveball to the collection that I didn't expect. Way to diversify your collection, Petko. 👍
Why do I love this chanel so much. I am not really into spiders. But you make it somehow enjoyable . Really good work keep it up
love arachnids but would never get close to a centipede. They legit scare the shit out of me
Dr. Wojak Nogf Millipedes are cute though
Amber Lyons millipedes arent centipedes
As much as this stuff creeps me out, I thoroughly enjoy your videos and your collection!
I'd suggest watching kamp kenen on YT for information on your marginated tortoise
Christmas came early at the Dark Den!!! Petko I am so jealous. I have been wanting a crested gecko for a long while! It’s great that you also have impulse buys, sometimes that can be bad but you will do great. I’m so excited for you man. Good luck.
The Scorpions is a heterometrus spinifer
Satan seems like a great addition to your collection! Beautiful and active. He rested on the side of the enclosure rather than the hide so perhaps he will hang out in the open enough to get some good films and photos.
Name the centipede Jesus lol
THE MOMENT IV BEENING WAITING FOR ALL WEEK HAS ARRIVED
6:54 that’s the type of scorpion I want.
LEMON1O59 not sure if it's heterometrus Imperator or heterometrus mysorensis
but it looks like h. emperator, h. mysorensis, or h. swammerdami.. not sure
LEMON1O59 or heterometrus spinifer
Your videos were helpful to me because I was babysitting my friends tarantula and did not understand it. Now I am much more fascinated in arachnids because of you and even had fun remodeling the enclosure for my friends tarantula and making a video! Thanks!
Qualche italiano?
By the way, Great video! Keep making them!
Lichang Hu ovviamente ;)
Certo!

Eccoci!
Ovviamente
First time ever commenting on a video but I just had to say , I absolutely love the direction your channel is going. Keep up the amazing work!
All it takes is one earthquake to release all the monsters
Excellent name for your centipede!! Looks amazing!!
Keep poking the Mastigoproctus gigantus buddy and you'll soon find out why they call them 'Vinegar'oon. Looks like you were about to get blasted.
Also, I am a total reptile person, I only watch this channel because I love your passion and skill. I am so excited to see that applied to some reptiles! Herpetology all the way!
if you keep buying animals , at this rate , you will become a zoo
Awesome..
Great that the Patreon is working for you Petko...
Get a Chameleon 😍 it'd be awesome
im so excited to see all of them, glad you get so much interesting addition. Thanks for making friday even better, good luck petko
45 secs ago wow I am erly
aaa finally something i know about!! dwarf orange crayfish need an aquarium of at least 5 gallons (about 18 litres) and they do need filtered water. You can potentially find some chemicals to detoxify water so you can cycle it with them inside, I use seachem prime but I don't know how accessible that is in croatia. or you can risk cycling without it and just do frequent water changes, but inverts are super sensitive to nitrites so watch them carefully. congrats on all your new friends!!
im from phillipines
Vincent Tolentino me too
Werpa sayu lodi
Awesome addition! especially the Tortoise~ adorable addition
I'm so hyped about your new additions especially the tortoise.
nice man. cant wait to see the enclosure builds. the collection is looking amazing. keep up the good work.
I would just like to say, that you inspired me to get my first tarantula, an A. avic. And today I got my second, a G. pulchripes. Your videos are so helpful and informative! You are amazing!
Okay but seriously i've been waiting all week for this video
Never too many animals and thank you patreons to make all of this possible!
Hi
I'm a fairly new subscriber but I have fallen in love with this channel, your videos are AWESOME i love how you show both the good and the bad and always work to do right by your animals.
A standard 10 gallon with a large sponge filter and some hiding spots is a good temporary setup. With 50% water changes weekly.
Mantis's have so much personality. They make fantastic pets.
I love your channel! i just started watching it Friday and I'm so fascinated by all of your animals and how you care for them. Keep up the good work!!!
Nice new additions. Turtle, whip scorpion, and mantis are really sweet
