When people watch me use this trick, they want to learn it too. This is the fastest and easiest way I know to secure ratchet strap tails in most tie down situations. If you save this video, you can pull it up next time you’re tying down a load, once you get a few reps under you’re belt, you’ll have it by memory. It’s so easy it doesn’t seem right. #rachetstrap #tiedown #hacks #tips #tricks #tutorial #hauling #load #secure #saftey #whydidntiknowaboutthissooner
The slap and "that's not going anywhere" denotes a true professional. (Definitely won't come undone for the first 6 miles.)
F.I.D.O. Is in affect. Fuck it drive on.
Nah. The slap seals the knot like wax.
No, I think you are wrong, I’d give it 7 miles!!!!!! I trap it under the strap and then pull the last 2 or 3 tightens. That can’t go anywhere then! 🤪
It's the classic warranty to the curb and not a step further
6 miles? Naw man, after the slap and the magic words it will NEVER come undone without human intervention.
Very useful tutorial that I will 100% forget the next time I need to secure the end of a strap.
Sad but true 😝
teyink So practice. If you can do it 3 or 4 times without help, you'll know it forever.

@@R1davies I figured out that if you save the last couple of clicks on the ratchet, do the tie-down of the excess strap and then do the last couple of clicks, it’ll stay on there for sure!

I've been doing it like this for years, I've never had one come loose even if loads had shifted. Complete game changer once I learned this method.
This video is the kinda thing that makes me love working in the trades. There’s a certain kind of fun that comes from showing someone a neat trick to make the job easier and look more professional.
Shit glad I’m done with straps this stupid shit right here
My husband has shown me this a million times but I always forget. I need to bring him some parts and a welder and of course forgot how to do this. Glad I found the how to video 😂
I loved the, “I’m proud of myself smile!” Haha! Great tip young man. God bless you.
As a flatbedder, I've seen those come loose and get wrapped around the wheels going down the road and tear alot of stuff up.not a good way to do it unless it's a short trip.
That doesn't seem very secure at all, regardless of how far or near the trip is, js.
Yeah, the best way is to roll it up like he did, then save about 8" from the ratchet, pass the 8" excess through the eye of the roll you made which makes a U of strap. Pass that U over the roll and pull it tight, and tuck it under the ratchet. To undo the roll, just pass the end of the U back over the roll and it comes undone instantly.
This also works perfectly to store the ratchet and strap, just bring the strap hook all the way to the ratchet, and repeat the steps above.
Why not roll it up and use a twist tie ? Lol. Not sure where this is but where I'm from straps need stitching to indicate strength or our hero ministry of trans ...lol ..... will cut the straps and leave you at the side of the road. Keep in mind they all tried to be cops first.
That's cuz u didn't slap it and say not going anywhere
I know what you did wrong! You forgot to slap it & say that’s not going anywhere!!
The hand slap and the "that's not going anywhere" really hold it in place
Herr winkler?
It’s universal hand slap can be used throughout your day
Right on. That's what I've been doing wrong. I got the slap part, but I haven't been saying the words! TY, stranger.
That's the secret, for real.
For the first 10 miles.
You can tell buddy knows what he's talking about just by that smile at the end.
I delivered sprinkler pipe all summer and this is the exact way we did it, it works on the other side of the ratchet strap too when the load gets in the way
I find that if yo roll it up like you did and place it under the ratchet handle before you lock it down works better.
💯
💯
Except that doesn't work when the strap is at a steep angle
Protects the load as well
That's how I was taught as well.
This is Nicholas aka Big Hoss, flatbed/step deck semi operator. I've done it his way with the hook on the rub rail , but it's easier to heat that hook up just enough and bend it so it'll go in-between so u can either hook to the frame or just flip the hook so that only a tiny bit is under the rub rail and makes the strap and load more safe.
On the other side just pull the strap through the run rail so u have the safe affect.
Also one thing he forgot was to put a half twist into the strap so u do t hear a bunch of buzzing noise or give it a reason to loosen up.
I almost agreed with him with the end but when wrapping it should be a tiny bit bigger of a loop and then lay it flat between the rub rail and the strap and then just crank down your strap and it can't ever move.
Almost making a bow tie like him gives something else an opportunity to catch that strap and do damage. It could be something off another rig or just flying debris of any kind.
Other thing I've seen done is when u wrap the strap longer like I said then u can actually put the bottom half into the winch and the roll still acts like extra edge protection. Once cranked right on the winch the extra yet again can't move at all unless the winch breaks .
Food for thought.
Every man knows, neither the knot nor technique actually matters. If you don't slap it and confidently say "That's not going anywhere.", it is, in fact, going somewhere.
"I knew I should have slapped it and this would have never happened!"
He's loading it on a flatbed. Clearly it IS going somewhere.
😂😂😂 💯

Yeah, I've had them come loose using that method. Unite try putting the loose and in the roller right before it gets taught tighten it down and now you have a looped you can make a knot over the handle with which will keep it from bouncing open on a rough roads off-road recovery and the like
I’ve been doing this since I’ve seen this video. Works brilliantly plus I get lots of compliments at track days about how neatly my strap ends are bundled. I’ve spread the gospel to many other riders loading up at the end of the day. We will take over the world!!😂. Thank you!
Another good trick is, if you're strapping something tall and theres a few feet of strap exposed to the wind. Deliberately have the strap in one twist at each end. (180 degrees) It stops the strap from flapping in the wind
@@flatootyep and this method will come loose from vibration and flap.... roll the end before tightening then put between the rail and strap then tighten
Over a million miles driving truck here
That flap and vibration wears out your straps pretty fast too
@@jolllyroger1 I see what you mean. That's a good idea 👍
Another way: Check and see if there's a fairly large loop on the strap on the ratchet. If it's large enough to pass the strap through, do a loop like he shows and tuck it into the ratchet end, then tighten the ratchet. Even if the strap comes loose, the strap end won't come out.
Another hint - rub your hand over the edge of what you're strapping down. If it's rough or sharp, put some form of padding under it, or it'll cut the strap (lumber, not so much, because it gives a bit). Check the finish of the product - if rubbing will mark the finish, pad it.

@@jeffhale2278also ratchet always goes on drivers side.
Ratchet straps work off friction, next time you tighten one down allow the strap to wrap around a couple times. Less chance of the strap loosening
Exactly, he tightened it wrong.
No friction on the roller to keep the strap from slipping loose but the tail roll looks clean
Should also stand by for about a minute and retighten.

Why attached to the rub rail ? The rail is there to protect the strap or chain from breaking if there is an impact in that area.

Just like your girlfriend.
First mistake is attaching to the rub rail and not the stake pocket. Also how you have your hook if your load shifts for whatever reason and your strap loosens off, the hook will fall. If this occurs the strap is not secure and could wrap itself around an axle. Always give a half wrap and attach to the top of the stake pocket. Load binders follow this same rule.
Crazy i learned this by accident a year ago. I also like the roll up and knot it on its own. Both have there place
I think indeed this is the most safest methode! It not hanging loose or some and it provide the rachet for undo!
I have no idea why but his smile at the end feels so right. Like he's feeling happy to share this relatively niche but nonetheless useful trick
Man I'm a old trucker and that was fantastic thanks man
Thats how they teach you instructing school now. That's how I was tought 10 years ago
Old truckers never die,...they just get a new Peterbilt. :o)
If you’re really an old trucker, then you noticed that strap on the outside of the rubrail. Which is improperly secured. That rail is there to protect straps and chains in the event of an impact. It is not for securement, unless 3 points of contact are made, or the strap is wrapped around.
@southerntrendkiller2632 It's perfectly fine. Your 4" straps need to be behind the rubrail. The way some trailers are made and the way some of the ratchets for the 2" straps are made, you can't always have them behind the rubrail. If your trailer is not equipped with a buckle holder for your straps, then it's best to hook the buckles of the 4" strap to the rail. Run your strap behind the rail and then bring the buckle up on the outside and hook on top so the metal buckle is the only thing outside the rail. Yes, I know if you put all that force on one end of the rail, it can pull of like a zipper. But you're not putting all the stress at one point. You're spreading the stress throughout the rail. If you can't understand the mechanics of how that works then you probably shouldn't be pulling a flatbed. If you're straps loosen up going down the road and they are not attached to the trailer and only relying on the tension of the strap to keep them hooked they can very easily come completely loose and fall off.
@@anthonyaubuchon765 yea…that’s what I said. Wrap the strap around the rail. If you didn’t understand the term “wrap” you shouldn’t be flatbedding or correcting someone who’s done it for 14 years. That what I like, a video with useful information
Incorrect. ODOT says you need to tie at least once around binder to potentially prevent binder from potentially unwinding. It's a $4,000 fine per strap incorrectly tied. Plus your loop method vibrates loose and could get sucked into the wheel.
I pass my excess at least half of its length to a tie down point and back to another tie down point and tie it off twice. 4 years. No loose straps this far.
Also putting a half twist in a strap can stop airflow making it vibrate and wear at the points where it meets where it's fastened around something. Though I also have heard some law enforcement members might not like the twist idea.
Its just easier to cut the extra end off. DOT ain't got a clue.
@@jtoker9758 nah, they wrote me up for a "too short" strap
There is no DOT rule about having to tie around the binder, and if there is, please quote the source!
However I agree that just wrapping it up is not secure, because if it comes even slightly loose the whole thing flops out.
