VERY interesting to us beginners, especially the twist to stop the wind from blowing the strap.

My OCD for neatness was kicking in seeing the straps twisted but when you explained it I was fine with it. Lol. And when you showed how you take care of the remaining strap that was really clever. Nice instructions Austin.

Damn, you made that look easy! I guess it is easy when you know what you're doing... I can't wait to get back to the hangar and untangle the horrific mess that is our collection of ratchet straps. None of us have been using them properly but now I can show up the boys because Austin gave me knowledge power. Thank you very much! :-) We have an old 2001 F150 for a work truck and most things we carry will fit in the bed with the tailgate closed. But when we do have to tie something down, it's usually an oversize crate containing something extra expensive like a wing aileron or a landing gear. The tie down points in the truck bed are awful but at least I will have new confidence in the ratchet strapping.

I definitely agree with you conventional tie down points in trucks are never in the right spot

This is nice informative video and helped me a lot. One question. I am using ratchet straps on the roof rack cross bar of my mid size suv. What is the safest way to hook the other end of the ratchet strap? I just hooked it on the cross bar. It worked but the cross bar is thick and it didn't look too snug. The truck in your video already has a good designated place to place the hook which my SUV roof rack doesn't seem to have. It would be nice to know if there was a safer way. Thanks!

Agree with most of your video except for the part about the least amount of material on the spool. Industry standard is three wraps, otherwise they will loosen up as there’s not enough material trapped to keep it from sliding through.

Also, take the first loop on the coiled up excess strap all the way around, 9:16 - keep going all the way over the coil. It then becomes a knot and can't come loose on the road.

Could you do a video on how to use an extended ladder properly?
Yes, this is an argument in my house. The man says you can extend all the way to the next to last rung, and I say no you can't it does not have enough to support you.
Silly argument and question...but I don't want him falling off the ladder!

How to use an extension ladder? Cut the freaking thing up and take it to the dump. Rent scaffolding or a boom truck! Nothing is worth living the rest of your life in a wheelchair, on a ventilator. Ask me how I know!

According to USDOT, it's illegal to have a strap on the outside of the rub rail. Their reasoning is that straps outside the rail could be cut during an accident. When I was hotshotting, I had to run the strap through the pocket and hook the frame of the trailer. If your hauling commercially in the US, you could get a fine for that.

    • @AustinTischler

I have heard that’s how they do it in the us. Makes enough sense though
