I've air drummed more to South of heaven then any other album. I can't believe this guy was only making 60.000$ a year. Anything he plays over, turns to solid gold.
Good call, used to love playing along with this back in the day! Lombardos drum parts are fantastic, so musical and manage to up the intensity level ( which judging by the overall sound wouldnt be easy) while grooving like fuck. The only thrash drummer with swing. Legend!!
Actually he was making twice that but half was going to his ex wife. He fails to mention that part :) I was a huge fan back in the 80's (saw them live on the Reign and South tours) and 2000's and always thought Dave was getting shafted but the more I read and learn it sounds like he can be quite a handful. There is a really interesting book called Slayer 66 & 2/3 that contains allot of dirt on both Kerry and Dave. Sounds like neither is a ball to work with honestly :) And the more I read the more Dave dug his own grave in allot of ways. He's not the fall guy I always believed he was :) He also had no problem dropping his wife - the same wife he quit the band over early on - years later for a chick that lasted no time at all. So I don't feel that bad for the guy honestly.
TheRealGEO 1. He did not quit over his girlfriend in the 80's, he quit for the same reason he quit in 2014: He questioned why they were still making such little money despite now being on a major label. His girlfriend at the time was actually the one who CONVINCED him to rejoin. 2. All that happened in 2014 was Dave felt management was screwing them over, he asked if his accountant would look over the band's finances, and then he was fired. 3. I dont think its really right for you to use his love life against him. Its a very private matter to which we have less than 1% of the details to. 4. Stop using those stupid smiley faces every point you make. You look like freaking idiot.
@@maxdurk4624 1. His wife was supposedly a constant source of tension on the bus as Dave had to travel with her. That led to allot of animosity and led to him leaving the band initially along with him not being happy that he didn't get credit as songwriter and not being paid enough (in his mind). And you are right she did talk him into going back once Slayer realized there were not any other drummers out there that could play like Dave at the time (and that is still true). 2. He pulled an ultimatum on the band a week before leaving for tour thinking they would have to give him a raise (2013) and they called his bluff. 3. I'm going by a source that has not only researched the band for years but also interviewed them. I don't know the guy personally. 4. I HATE LISTS 5. I still think the guy is a great drummer. Just maybe he was 50% of the problem. 6. I'm not replying again so reply away!
TheRealGEO TheRealGEO 1. That, again, is false. Slayer had actually found his replacement that they were going to use going forward, and made Dave reaudition to get back in. 2. They did not call his bluff. He did leave. That is not a bluff. 3. You do realize writers can be biased, yeah? Especially if one of their biggest sources is Jeff or Tom... 4. I don't care.
There are many drummers who impress me with their style. Gene Hoglan, George Kollias, Neil Peart and many others. But Dave...His style is just SO HYPNOTIZING!!! This drumming is a pure beauty, and therefore I devoted myself fully to practise his style. It is just incredible!
You really get the sense that Dave truly loves drumming. At his age it could have just been a job to him. But there's passion there, enjoyment of his craft.
I wish Lombardo would produce a dvd of himself drumming say 2 - 4 shows. That way we would see more songs and how he differs every night. I'd buy that stuff right away.
Hes the best hands dowm period. Hes jus a freaking machine. ! His fills are so fast and yet so perfect solid and precise. Nobody has his talent on drums period
The drums on South Of Heaven were so prominent in the mix compared to their other albums. Really made Dave’s kit sound massive. ‘Ghosts Of War’ is definitely one of my favorites off that album.
This is absolute classic.... Genius of dave lombardo.... South of heaven record, the revolution in thrash metal, specialy in drumming and in sound of drums.
He was the driving force behind Slayer. You just can't beat that. And playing with that 11 piece drumset in the 80s these difficult songs is almost impossible for most drummers because there is a totally different technical approach with such a large drumkit. And the fucking groove!! He is by far the best metal drummer.
Its amazing what the human brain can withhold. All that info on witch beat and drum to hit and to remember every hit and drum to hit next. Not only all of that but at the speed it must be done. Great minds do great things.
I met Dave Lombardo after a Grip show in Prague in the late 90's. It was a tiny club and he was just standing next to me at the bar after the show. "He dave," I said, "You're a total bad-ass." I bought him a beer and he said, "Thanks."
This awesome clip demonstrates to a 'T' what's so great about Dave's drumming - he's a natural.. organic, hypostatic.. & he doesn't let up or go easy for 1 SECOND: MASTERFUL!
I'm jumping in...Paul is good. But Dave is by far better. He has a natural flow where Paul is more forced. Also, you just see/hear that Paul cannot play Dave's drum parts as is, just watch the drum cams and compare. Paul only hits half the drums Dave does during a song. Paul style is more drum machine whereas Dave is much more fluid and rhythmic. Both good for metal but totally different.
Lombardo has an organic sound to his playing. King and Araya are complete idiots for not paying him what he's worth. Granted I'm more of a Megadeth fan, but Lombardo is my favorite metal drummer EVER. He was the true star of Slayer.
I hate that people have to argue Lombardo vs Bostaph. Bostaph is really a great drummer. He really is. It's just unfortunate he had to replace Dave Lombardo of all drummers. If Bostaph replaced Lars or Gar, this conversation would never happen. And I really enjoyed Bostaph on Testament's Formation of Damnation and was sad to see him to leave before their next album.
*NICK MENZA WAS NOT THAT GOOD?? ARE YOU TAKING THE PISS???* Nick was an amazing drummer and every bit as good as Gar Samuelson (my two fave Megadeth drummers).
I could LOOP this vid & watch all day, it's RIDICK... ps. U can't COMPARE this to anyone else cuz NO-ONE feels the music like BEASTardo (tks LLeguSS) - never mind owns the skills to match...
Agree ...I’ve listened to metal for over 30 years always come back to the conclusion Dave is the best hands down... just to bad RUclips has such crappy sound it takes away from mastery on the drums
0:54 - One of the greatest drum fills ever
Fuck yes.
I tried to like this comment twice!!
Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaak ya 💥💥💥💥
That can be said about many of daves fill ins!
YES IT IS!
South of heaven was his best work. My favorite Slayer album.

Dave is the most soulful drummer in metal. Total bombast with dynamics and groove.
The guy is unbelievably smooth, his fills are so beautiful and they change with every performance.
That's right, he is the drummers equivalent of Randy Rhoads
Totally agreed
That’s because he’s a feel player never had lessons like myself but it’s all about the grooves with drummers like us
There are many drummers who impress me with their style. Gene Hoglan, George Kollias, Neil Peart and many others. But Dave...His style is just SO HYPNOTIZING!!! This drumming is a pure beauty, and therefore I devoted myself fully to practise his style. It is just incredible!
Greetings from 10 years later. Hope your drumming practice is still going strong 🤘
Gene hoglan actually somewhat taught Dave some things including double bass
This and "Read Between the Lies" has got to be their must underrated songs.
I think this song is properly rated.... by people like us that KNOW!
best drummer in the world
nope
Umbert alonso rovira yup
still dreaming
No doubt, one of the best around. Goosebumpsss....
Zakria Samuel no. Tools drummer is the best
His ride is so signature to him. Love it when he goes to it.
His fills always are so smooth, you can tell he really feels the music he plays.
You really get the sense that Dave truly loves drumming. At his age it could have just been a job to him. But there's passion there, enjoyment of his craft.

Me too
Lombardo is awesome! A complete own style of playing and sound, no triggers just pure power. No one can fill his shoes in Slayer.
Jon dette
The swing is unreal, funky rolls. The best!
can't fake that swing. He could have half the bag of tricks and still be great. Hell, he could have no bag of tricks and still be great lol.
Come back lombardo we miss you!!!
Latino, YEAH!!!
fuckin rip slayer
Love these drum cams, you can really appreciate how talented Dave is,
How can one have such a mastery over an art
Hes the best hands dowm period. Hes jus a freaking machine. ! His fills are so fast and yet so perfect solid and precise. Nobody has his talent on drums period
He plays the drums, like he really mean it. 🤘
The drums on South Of Heaven were so prominent in the mix compared to their other albums. Really made Dave’s kit sound massive. ‘Ghosts Of War’ is definitely one of my favorites off that album.
0:17 - 0:27 FasT AND Loose, effortless groove while heavy thru & thru, there's NO BETTER DRUMMING THAN THIS!
0:54 - No words.
the root of all boners!
Fu**in Dave, I love his fills, he just goes off like a BOMB!!
Dave lombardo.. the Cuban beast!!!!
Slayer was blessed to have Dave
Easily the best metal drummer of the big 4
Fun fact : The number 2 is from slayer too : Bostaph
8 years and you’ve received no hate? Impressive
of every band ever*
@@julesjulbergen553 id put charlie above bostaph
Gene Hoglan is better than any of them.
This is absolute classic.... Genius of dave lombardo.... South of heaven record, the revolution in thrash metal, specialy in drumming and in sound of drums.
How can one not love this...?
This man is both the father and the creator of the standard by which all metal drummers must compare themselves to.
well modern metal. Bill Ward is the father of heavy metal drumming, and Phil Taylor was the prototype for thrash metal drumming
He was the driving force behind Slayer. You just can't beat that. And playing with that 11 piece drumset in the 80s these difficult songs is almost impossible for most drummers because there is a totally different technical approach with such a large drumkit. Guitars........ were the driving force behind Slayer. Fact.
@@bobabooey4537 i disagree but that's ok man. Cheers!
Its amazing what the human brain can withhold. All that info on witch beat and drum to hit and to remember every hit and drum to hit next. Not only all of that but at the speed it must be done. Great minds do great things.
Lombardo and the others🤘
You have to admire how brilliant Dave is
Just aint Slayer without Dave and Jeff
I agree with you on that
I *liked* repentless but it was not at all Slayer. Kerry still went all the way up to the 12th fret and flippity floppity but that was it.
SLAYER OWES THIS MAN MILLIONS!! STRAIGHT UP!!!
This is why you say the snare is the identity of the drummer. And Lombardo played this one as if his identity was on stake !
I met Dave Lombardo after a Grip show in Prague in the late 90's. It was a tiny club and he was just standing next to me at the bar after the show. "He dave," I said, "You're a total bad-ass." I bought him a beer and he said, "Thanks."
This man is sick
damn gurlll u supafine
Alyssa Gonzalez your a baby doll!
she owns "a baby doll"?
Nadie, nadie es más completo que el Sr Dave Lombardo. El mejor de la historia

Honestly nothing matches that swing and groove that Dave has to his drumming. People can copywhat he does, but they'll never have that same feel.
He really does have such a smooth, natural sound to his swing.
The most underrated drummer of all time!
DAVE LOMBARDO IS THE MOST BRUTAL BEST AND FOREVER UNCHALLENGEABLE DRUMMER IN HISTORY !!DAVE IS NOT HUMAN !!!!!!!! A GENIUS !!!!tyler
madness and lot of energy in his pure shape
Wheres the rest? I wish I had a drum cam video of every Slayer song.
This awesome clip demonstrates to a 'T' what's so great about Dave's drumming - he's a natural.. organic, hypostatic.. & he doesn't let up or go easy for 1 SECOND: MASTERFUL!

I could not have said it any better my self
Have always said it, amen to that!
Spot on.
Best explanation of the two I've read. Paul's got a much more "Forced" sound to him, where lombardo just lets the drums play themselves
Lombardo has an organic sound to his playing. King and Araya are complete idiots for not paying him what he's worth. Granted I'm more of a Megadeth fan, but Lombardo is my favorite metal drummer EVER. He was the true star of Slayer.
Lombardo is one of my most influential drummers ever.
My favorite song.... wish we had the whole clip!!!
dave is a sick man! the best thrash metal drummer of all time! to to lombardo!!
Killer skills, I always liked his unique style.
Gar was better than Paul...Menza replaced Gar good but was never that good, same goes for DeGrasso and the rest of Deth s drummers
horusoftheblackflame gar was really
Chuck replaced Gar
*NICK MENZA WAS NOT THAT GOOD?? ARE YOU TAKING THE PISS???*
Nick was an amazing drummer and every bit as good as Gar Samuelson (my two fave Megadeth drummers).
yes he was....i prefer Gar s style thought
‘One day he’ll get it’ 😙🎶
No one swings metal like this man. Nobody.
He's so much in command of the material...
Man, it was just getting to my favorite part.
I could watch this guy drum ALL day, it's fucking ridiculous.
it's a lovely trance he appears to be in. Fucking love it!! FUCKING SLAYER!!!
I'll bet most earthquakes are caused by Dave's drumming lol
can confirm
WHAT A BAD ASS!
The Legend strikes again..." I DOMINATE"...so epic.
the greatest drummer EVER period
God of drummers🤘
The thrash master, nobody does it better.
Gotta love that Lombardo flavor! Such great feel
one of the best slayer songs ever....and they nearly never played it live...
He has great fills!
THE BEST DRUMMER ON THA EARTH.
DAVE MAKES THAT LITTLE KIT JUMP. LOVE HIS STYLE
my 2 favourite drummers: dave lombardo and tim alexander. different styles but both are still incredibly rhythmic and technical
I could LOOP this vid & watch all day, it's RIDICK... ps. U can't COMPARE this to anyone else cuz NO-ONE feels the music like BEASTardo (tks LLeguSS) - never mind owns the skills to match...
Lombardo is the lord of drums
as soon as the video start my heart almost exploded from Dave's god like drumming
Muito grato ao Dave Lombardo pela contribuição ao Rock... 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
we need more of this footage!!!
I totally agree in the whole world
Oh man. I want to see him play the whole song.
Lombardo is the best!! Forgotten drummer!
His genius transcends all technics
Outstanding!
ABSOLUTE GENIUS

Real drums live! All mics are there! Very cool! The sound is real!
Best drummer in the world god bless Lombardo always
holy shit! My favourite from South of Heaven. Dave killer!!!
AMAZING
He's a machine, best drummer ever.
IMO the best thrash metal drummer of the era.
just wow!!!
Him and Charlie from anthrax best drummers on the planet
THATS HOW SLAYER SHOULD ALWAYS BE PLAYED AND REMEMBERED!
If this tour is the last and daves not performing, well they are going out on a whimper
Dave , the best !!!
mans a living legend to me
This is just insane!
It sounds even more massive and a bit different on studio album! Dave is a fucking machine :D
