Hi Steve. Good video. A hack I do to our fleet of stihl straight shafts is to drill a 5mm hole through the grease nut and tap a thread for a grease nipple. 😁
Hey Steve I found your channel because I'm currently having trouble with a generator. It's a Predator with 3500/4375 peak watts. I live in California and we're dealing with triple digit temps during the day and it only gets into the low 80's at night so I'm doing whatever I can to fix it. I know about motorcycles but not much about Generators. Anyway I'll get to my question. Why aren't the RPM's changing when I plug something in? For example: If I plug something in like my freezer or window AC (5,000 BTU's) it shuts off because the generator won't give out enough power. The only way I can keep them on is by having them at their lowest setting which just isn't enough. Hopefully you will see this soon and reply thanks! ✌️
👍
Similar to my Singer Sewing Machine.....which takes 3 in 1 oil tho.Tee
Pp
Probably why my 4 year old FS38 drive shift just broke right at that bearing. Wish I new that a couple years ago...
Great video
Thanks 👍
Cheers Steve for sharing that's great. My FS38 was 1 year old and lost power wouldn't run at high rpm only idle and bogged down when accelerating so went back to dealer. Charged me for new fuel new plug and new spark arrester in muffler. It just needed the spark arrester CLEANED!! and plug and fuel were only weeks old too. So no dealers for me anymore. I clean spark arrester every season no problem and it's a great trimmer. I've learned lots from you and others on good old YT so thanks very much for sharing cheers.
You're Welcome...
I read about that grease port in the instructions of my Echo 225 SRM. This is the 5th year, it is still full of clean grease. Even when I poke in there with a dowel rod, it never needs any grease. I guess they got the seals right on this one.
Clear, easy to follow video Steve! Thank you!
You're welcome!
I didn’t know about either the oil point on both chain saw and trimmer. Nice information.
Right on Mark! Thank You...
I have one of those grease guns. Mine has a ring that allows you to remove the 'plunger' and it can be refilled.
Right on
Very informative and helpful
Glad you think so!
Great video. Thank you. By the way, the difference between a screw and a bolt is that a screw utilizes a threaded hole and a bolt requires the use of a nut. Regardless of the head or thread type.
NICE!!! Love the little grease gun. Buying one.
Right on
Good tip! Learn new everday
Yes indeed!
All ways so very helpful
Happy to help!
thanks man...found several of those grease gun's and never knew what it was...I'll be damned.
@Meow and fun to watch too...👍
You had me at secret grease hole.
Great job 👍!!! Can l use WD-40 ???
Great video as usual Steve, what about Milwaukee's Best Light Beer ?
Great suggestion!
How about the FS55 straight shaft Stihl?
What about the FS 56 straight shaft?
Can I put oil instead of grease?
Great tip Steve! I did know about that gear port. Is that same grease a bear on a Stihl curved shaft edger?
What about cordless weedeaters won't spin fast
Awesome info
Glad you liked it
I enjoy your tips on small engine devices. Please upgrade your beer.
Will do
Hey Steve is there any grease fitting like that on any other brand weed wackers sure would like to know thank you Wally from retired man's Lawn service
Aren't you Wavy Gravy of The Hog Farm? You were at Woodstock!
Hi Steve, is there a grease hole on other brands with a straight shaft and gear box?
That’s why you’re the professor and we are the students. Every day is a teaching day. Great tip for keep the tools in top notch condition.
Very true!
Thanks Prof
I tried to explain to the cashier that the beer was a school item and should be tax exempt. 20 cases for the 1st semester is a lot of taxes, and I study hard. LOL
I try to stick to a few beers I highly like. They are Corona, Modelo, Michelob, Coors Lite, and Bud Lite Lime...
Same with gearbox end trimmers, take out plug, put grease in.
Chainsaw cranks and bar tips often forgotten too.
Also angle grinders like a little grease now and then and its easily done and all these tools last much longer.Save some cash. And THANKS for the bent shaft trimner info.
2:40 he really was going to go for the beer
😆 I noticed that to, that little bit of hesitation😂🤣😂👍👍
LOL! Force of habit...
Stop beating around the bush , dive head first into it !
You'll make it, trust me I've done it!
Then you will locate the secret greasehole and can give it proper attention.
I have an Echo GT 225. Does this apply? Or is it just for Stihl?
I can’t thank you enough for all the informative videos you make. Every video I’ve watched of yours taught me something new and I’m an old man I’m 71 years old. I just want to say thank you Steve you’re the best!

@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon- Ron Lee is right. Every video I watch from your show is educational and very informative. Thank you for educating us. 2 thumbs up Steve.
Weed eater?? Did you call that a weed eater? I called a dealer looking for a part and said weed eater and the sale preson came unglued... Omg.. Its a trimmer... A weed "trimmer" still he was even more unhappy with me cause i was laughing to hard... Lmao..

What is wrong with me? I don't own or even like string trimmers but I watched this entire video. ;-)
I have an Echo, does that apply to all trimmers?
It depends on the model and when it was manufactured
Greasing is AWESOME!
I replaced my "Locater Bolt" with a Zerk Fitting and a Zerk Cover to help Minimize Grass & Dirt.

Good idea man!
Hey neighbor!
Steve , what a great way to start my weekend ! I've got about a six pack of jobs and I can't wait to get started , eh that might be a case . I started early ! Love you my brother !
Have fun!
Ok, Steve is there the same hidden grease point for those of us with the strait shaft "Weed-eaters"?
@Jay Smith really, my Toro had no grease at all in either the trimmer or brush heads. I think they have Magnesium gears @ the change of angle....
Question Steve, is there a way to greese that end on a straight shaft?
Should be at the the trimmer head a hex bolt. Some have a torx center. It's around 7/16" in size. You do not need to remove the head or the guard on a straight shaft version.
On the straight shaft trimmer. Can the same grease gun be used?
Will this method work on an Echo curve-shaft trimmer?
Thx
Thanks Steve ! I never new about this. Every season it’s getting grease! Always learning something new. Thanks buddy !!
Any time!
Your videos are technically perfect, the sound, your close-ups. And I learn things that are important to the life of my tools, and their performance. Keep it up !
Wow, thank you!
Is that on all weedeaters or just that brand
Well, even the newer Stihl trimmers don’t have an option for greasing. They were meant to last “lifetime”. Tsk tsk... An FS55 for example has a different way of greasing, you can turn the Stihl grease tube into the thread and squeeze it in. I don’t think the lower end models would have such capability but I could be wrong.
That’s why you don’t buy an overpriced Stihl. Especially the “residential” grade.
@@andybecker2693 They work just fine...
As always, great content, excellent presentation, doesn’t waste time with needless fluff and no crap background music. Steve’s videos are the best.
Wow, thanks!
Steve, is there any way to grease an FS 56 gear head? The head has no plug hole on the side like other heads do.
As always youve educated me on something that I never knew. Stay safe
Thank You...
I have that exact weed eater I will be performing this service soon .. So the straight shafts don't have that bearing???
Hi. I am hoping you can show me the secret grease hole for a Cub Cadet SS470 Gas Trimmer. Love your channel. Cheers, thanks. 👍
I learn so much from this guy! He should have a T.V. show! Hell, he could have his own channel on power equipment!
Sounds good to me!
Hi Steve hope all is well with you, I purchased a 14”Electric Toro Weed Trimmer model #51480A, assembled and it worked great used it and when it needed to replace the string which I did rewind and loaded it as was illustrated poorly in the manual the string is constantly jamming and or not advancing, to make long story short can you by any chance do a tutorial on how correctly rewind and load string in this Toro machine sure appreciated since I am not only one who is encountering this problem.
Thank you
I almost fell off my chair laughing when you unloaded the 'beating around the bush' line. Very well done Steve,
Right on Johnny....
Stihl should have included that info in the owners manual, But that's a secret.. Take back to dealer for $$$$$ without Grease
That's another amazing thing you probably need the original instructions for, to be made aware of it. Thank the maker for Steve's giving nature.
I bet most people lose RPM, it quits cutting well, they blame the engine and throw the whole thing out, or sell it at the garage sale for 10% of what they gave for it.
Thanks a lot for the video dude. I was searching for that hole on my FS50C without success. On the bigger Stihl models is easier because you don't have to remove parts to find it. Thanks a lot!
Straight shafts have a bolt on the head gear drive too. Greasing it would be a good idea too.
Mr. Gregg T I have a lawn service and I’ve never had the bearing go out before the motor did.
Fivespeed 302 I own a landscaping and gardening service company too and it’s happened twice. The gears where the head attaches has given out
Nice, good to know, might that be a Set Screw. like for a pully. Cheers.
It needs a hole drilled from the outside to line up with the grease hole.
Does my Husqvarna straight shaft have one of these.? I’m going to ck. I have noticed my weed eater has been making a rough noise for some time. Maybe this is the cause. Thanks for the info.
will it work on my wifes concrete mixer ? how about my ar-15 ? how about looking at it ?
For the brand snobs arguing 4 years later if you've got any sense and have/had to use em as a profession, and/or sorce of income will agree it's stihl weedeaters husky saws and forever will be just that 🤷🏻♂️💯
Well that’s interesting, how ‘bout the straight shaft ones?
Mind outta the gutter boys
Hard not to with that one
There is a place to lube on the straight shaft and stick edgers. It's a larger cap that you remove and lube it with Stihl grease that comes in a little tube. You take the cap off the grease and the tube screws into the hole where you removed the plug from. Do it every couple of years. You can actually see if it's low on grease.
My FS105 has a screw the same as this one, but it's in the head of the trimmer.
@@123livewire Only thing special about stihl grease is the price.I use Moly grease on the driveshaft and transfer case, but you could use any good quality lithium grease as long as it's done that's the main thing.
The chainsaw secret grease hole was awesome. My poulan didnt have an open shaft to accept the grease tube, but I removed the clutch plate and simply rubbed grease into the needle bearings.
Good stuff!
Thanks. I've learned so many things from your video's. I like the fact that you talk with straight no bullshit information that's easy to follow and understand.
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
Old Stihl fs36, and Tanaka tbc23d are happy to have received much needed grease thanks to you. 🍺
Right on!

Thanks steve......just checked my echo weed wacker crm 2200 manual and they tell you to check the grease as you noted.
Whoda thunk it???? It pays to read!! and to subscribe to steve.

Never knew this existed and explains why the bearing on the end of the drive shafts always fail after a few years.

@First Last - that is not planned obsolescence
@First Last I think your pretty much correct I sell these in the UK and I have never known about this grease point and what the dealer doesn't know the customer doesn't know. Sneaky Stihl.
Took the small bolt out and put a grease CERT in it and I just use the grease gun full synthetic That’s what I did wild Steve
Happy holidays gobble gobble 🦃

Hi Steve---this is a great channel for old ladies who are alone and have to search how to do every little thing that needs repairing. Appreciate your help...thanks for not taking 2 years to do a show and tell...it was great. Jesus bless.
Thanks 👍
Right on soul sister!
My dad gave me one of those grease guns for chain saws. Didn't know it also worked on weedeaters. Thanks.
J Parra
... that grease tool also works on older Mercedes door hinges and u-joint fittings where there's no room to get a normal grease gun tip.
You're Welcome...
Not only did I not know that, I would most likely never have known it. What if the space I stored that information in, was really meant for something else? I saved a few old weed wackers and cheap pressure washers, (donated) just to see what is breaking down on them. (Box store crap) I STILL may have never looked for that grease hole. Haha.
Unboxing the $600 Simpson pressure washer today, from Wilco. Honda (haha) engine.
Tweekers got my Honda/Cat. I cheer, when I see their feet sticking out from under a Prius now. Now get to work, “on those Busch’s”. DKS! (No channel, yet.)
Good idea 💡 I learn something everyday from you Steve ..legend 👍🏻
Glad to help
Hey Steve, I always take the time to watch your videos when they come up on my list. ONCE! a season? AYSM? I use straight shaft units and the lube hole is much easier to access. In fact, my Red Max has a zerk fitting so every eight hours or so I give it a few pumps (Too much?). I'll keep watch for your straight shaft advice.
My Stihl straight shaft also has a allen head plug that a tube of stihl grease screws down in to grease the lower bearing. I'd say that grease gun would work too. Great videos Steve!
Is that bearing common on all curved-shaft Stihl devices? I have an FC 91 edger with a curved shaft. I do not see the standard grease port on the gearbox like there is with the straight-shaft models. I'll answer my own question tomorrow as I have the FC 91 on my bench and will check it out and report back. ETA - the Stihl FC 91 edger does NOT have a "secret grease hole" - at least that I could find. The gearbox appears to be a semi-sealed unit. There is an exploded diagram with the various bushings, bearings, and C-clips that go into the gearbox, but since Stihl's business model WANTS you to take all of your lawn and garden equipment issues to their dealer, I will avoid doing that. All of this tells me that Stihl fully intends for this edger's gearbox (or any unit without the capability to be lubed) to fail. And you know the replacement cost for that gearbox is half the cost of a new edger. Well done, Stihl. You've engineered failure into one of your products. The good news is, I don't use this edger very often.
Hmm, I own an actual Weedeater brand string trimmer and now wonder if it has a similar design and therefore associated maintenance requirement. Sure do enjoy your content my BC friend.
Yeah I commented on that, I like Steve's videos but you would think a pro wouldn't call it a weedeater if it's not
@@dwaynecollins4974 it sure as heck eats weeds.... So, it's a weed eater.. lol..
....comment.....oh kay. i drilled a small hole, high up on the shaft, near the top handle. About every 4 hrs of use, i use a large needle, the kind for cows/horses, and shoot 80/90 gear oil down the shaft, INSIDE. ( just a couple squirts, maybe a tea/tablesppon. ) This lubes, and keeps crap out of that lower bushing/bearing. One, could also use a blended mix, of 80/90 and grease. This way, no need to take apart anything. WHY didn't they 'design' this, alot more thoughtfully ?? you know, Steve, to sell more parts, etc....like all stuff today. Take care of your Bush (es) . In alberta
I just had to replace the bearing on my weed eater. Cause i didnt know to grease the bearing. But now i know and will do. Thanks
You're Welcome...
Steve, is there a hidden grease port on an Echo PAS 230? I keep the flex cable lubed but that's it. Thanks for all the videos!
Steve, THANK YOU for this video! My wife just gave me an FS 40 and I'm a firm believer in grease and oil being the cheapest maintenance you can do to anything mechanical!
You're Welcome...
Can you use 3 in 1oil or does it have to be grease?
When you say Grease, I think of a thicker lubricant rather than an oil. Thank you for your time.
The best way to use a weed trimmer.... take it apart and separate for your scrap piles ,,, AIN'T IT JUST AIN'T IT 😜 lols....
Thanks Steve. When you get a chance, go through the maintenance on the straight shaft trimmers. Include the Husky line.
Hey Steve just got an extremely used and abused ferris zero turn mower. The deck doesn't lift with the foot pedal. completely froze up. about half of the zerk fittings won't take grease. What are your recommendations/tricks to be able to get grease to go into these clogged fitting. Thank you. Love your knowledgable videos
With the help of your vids I’ve been fixing my ms170 and fs38 (along with various other mowers etc) for a couple of years. You’ve saved me so much money! Just greased the fs38 but I’m wondering…the top end of the shaft near the motor sounds like it needs some grease, and it’s started to rattle and ring like a bell if I shake it while off. Is that possible? If so, any chance of showing that fix? Cheers from Ottawa!
...i drilled a small hole, near the top handle, and shoot a tablespoonfull of 80/90 gear oil down to that bottom bearing. From your comment, i may do the same, only hold the whacker upside down, for a minute, till it runs into the top bearing/bushing- whichever it is.

I'm just gonna guess , but is it in the maintenance section of the owners manual (that nobody ever reads)?
Hiding right in plain sight 😂
@@MrTheHillfolk not in my manual. I’ve used the same trimmer since 2006 and have never greased it. I never heard of this but I’m going to grease mine soon.
I have a Stihl FSA90R Battery operated line trimmer. Ever since new the recommended. 095 trimmer line binds up in the spool, preventing it from feeding. Any ideas why?
The 4 thumbs down comes from clowns who never did this and seized the bearing Lol
Yikes. If I ever took that bolt out. I probably would’ve put Loctite on it not greased it. 😂😂
I really think that they should put a Zürich fitting on there and tell people that hit it with a pump of grease every few months or every 20 or so hours. Why I have some hidden pole beneath a screw. I should just manufacture it with a grease fitting.
I just saw this video Steve and I have one of these curved shaft units.
I always knew and wondered how this could be lubricated. Thank you so much for all the GREAT videos you put out to help save us from having problems with our equipment and most of all save us money.

Would you be able to use a syringe to push grease in the hole?
If you didn't know it was there you may be buying a new trimmer sooner then you think. Thanks Steve for the very informative and completely unknown greasing ports.
Dumb question, but would you do this to other weed eater brands as well? Or only a curved Stihl ? Like an ego that’s what I’m asking about again sorry if dumb I don’t know what I’m doing things work that’s why I’m here.
Great job Steve, thanks once again. I maintain gardens for a living 365/yr and a curved shaft weed eater (or strimmer as we brits say) is the perfect light weight and shaped tool for keeping lawn edges looking sharp. How convenient of them to put it under everything like that. They were designed to be forgotten and not known about. Thanks for the info Steve!

oi, steve, love yer videos and I always learn so much. However, about that there grindy bearing, my strategy is quite different from yers. When I find one whats grindy I make sure I use it a lot and not put any greese in there. My theory is that that the parts whats rubbin will soon grind off all them rough edges...and I just saved me self two pumps of greese!
My wife sent me here to learn where this Secret G Spot is. Apparently I've done too much beating around the Busch also. My shaft is curved too, but has thus far been ineffective. I hope this video improves my Busch skills.
